George A Fielding, M.D.
About George A Fielding
Dr. George Fielding is a general and bariatric surgeon located in New York, NY and affiliated with New York Langone Medical Center, where he is a Professor of Surgery at NYU School of Medicine. He has been performing general surgery for 37 years and weight loss surgery for 25 years.
He studied medicine at the University of Queensland, in Brisbane, Australia, graduating in 1979, and completed his surgical training at the Royal Brisbane Hospital in Australia. During his postgraduate training, he developed interests in laparoscopic and hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgery and then pursued advanced training in the field in Britain and Switzerland. As he became more and more interested in bariatric surgery, he started the Wesley Hospital Obesity Clinic, also in Brisbane Australia.
Bariatric surgery and the care of obese patients with skill and compassion has become a goal in his surgical life. As time has passed, he has performed more than 10,000 bariatric surgeries, and developed experience operating on "super" obese patients, obese adolescents and revisional surgery.
He has been involved in the early days of the development of laparoscopic surgery, and has taught the techniques to surgeons around the world. Dr. George Fielding has publishing more than 150 journal articles, abstracts, and book chapters describing these techniques and their outcomes. He still loves doing general laparoscopic surgery, especially gall bladders, hiatal hernias and paraesophageal hernias.
Dr. George Fielding is a fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons (England), and was honored to be made an honorary fellow of the College of Surgeons, Glasgow.
Dr. George Fielding underwent Lap-Band surgery himself in 1999, after years of struggling with his weight, and becoming very sick with weight related problems. He has a lap band for 17 years, and believes it gives an unusually personal perspective on this special group of patients.
