Anthony Galitsky, MD

Dr. Galitsky was born and raised in Ukraine. Most of us have read about the Soviet Union as part of the educational process. Understandably, living it was another sort of reality. Dr. Galitsky can recall as a young boy being inspired by Galitsky's grandfather’s stories about the greatness of America. His grandfather was a Soviet Marine during WWII. He was part of a detachment that returned equipment this country had loaned to the Soviet Union during the war. He was a starving Soviet Marine. The U.S. Marines saved his life giving him their food. His grandfather had difficulty expressing how generous Americans were. The doctor was in awe of what kind of country had such generous people and always carried that memory with him. It was a stark existence living in Ukraine. Growing up in the Soviet Union the doctor realized staying in Ukraine would not be a prudent life’s choice and longed to see America. He attended medical school and became a surgeon. The United States implemented a lottery system to issue visas for those residents of the Eastern Bloc wanting to come to America. Dr. Galitsky won the lottery in the Ukraine and was granted the opportunity to come to this country. In 2004, he was granted residency at North Oakland Medical Center Hospital in Michigan. In 2006, the doctor transferred to the New York General Surgery Program at Westchester Medical Center. He completed his residency in 2009. During the following year (2010) Dr. Galitsky completed his first fellowship in surgery of the liver and pancreas at Yale University, then in 2001 completed his second fellowship in Bariatric surgery at Lahey Clinic in Boston.
