  1. Good Morning Everyone! QOTD is what is your favorite recipe/foods/shakes for your pre or postoperative surgery? I am still able to eat many foods except for carbs still so I haven't delved into Bariatric recipes yet, but I will share mine once I do! For now I've been trying a lot of different protein shakes from Premier Protein including chocolate vanilla, chocolate peanut butter, cake batter, strawberries and cream and caramel. I love all of them, except for strawberries and cream is not my favorite, but they have been great for when I'm craving dessert! I have one for breakfast in the morning and I mix it with a scoop of Vital Proteins Collagen to keep my skin looking great during this process! I feel like that and my Solgar Biotin and Hair Skin and Nails has already been helping. I am big on skin care amd a Sephora "junkie" and can give anyone advice on that!

    February 2024 Surgery Buddies?

If the doctor or dietician gave you a minimum amount of protein per day, 3 protein shakes should meet that. Did they give you any nausea or reflux meds? If they didn't, that could be a possibility of why you can't get it down. It's all definitely a new learning curve. I had gastric bypass on the 7th. I thought water would be more of an issue. I do feel full after drinking but it doesn't last long. Just a matter of finding your sweet spot. Since I've started puree'/soft food. I do feel more hungry than I did on just liquids. But, After a couple bites from a cup of food I have to stop and usually wait. It takes me 45 minutes or so to eat a cup a food. A lot to get used to. Wish you the best, hang in there. It will get better.
  3. I'm a week out from surgery and have started on pureed food. I'm trying to figure out when I'm getting full without getting too full. Today I think I overdid it and it wasn't comfy at all! I get discomfort right between my breasts... the first few days after surgery, I was really sore there, and liquids hurt going down. They found a hiatal hernia and fixed that during surgery, and I figured that repair was causing the pain. But it's kind of in the same place where I get uncomfortable when I think I'm full. With that said... I'm curious about what full feels like to others. Thanks!!

I’m 19 days post op! On puree stage Struggling with this stage because of the food consistency! Back to work today I’m super nervous anyone else feel like this?
  5. My surgery went well. I also had hiatal hernia repair. I was an outpatient and had little pain after coming out of anesthesia, was able to keep water down and walked....gas pains were mostly non existent. Currently having mild pain, due to soreness from hernia repair. Liquids going down well, ready for pureed foods. I have my two week post op on Wednesday 3/20. I lost 19 lbs in my two week full liquid pre op diet and 6lbs down from surgery, so a total of 25 lbs.
  6. Try thinning out the cream soup with some chicken broth and eat only about 1/4 to 1/3 of a cup at most. Over time thin it out less until it is the normal consistency. Cream soups sit heavier than broth and my stomach counts them closer to a pureed food than it does a fluid. So I follow the food portions with them. I had to be very strict about this after surgery because just one bite too many and I'd be in the bathroom throwing it all up! So not cool... I love when people name their tiny tummies. LOL Mine has not claimed a name yet!

    Restriction

I had to do liquids for 2 weeks post op my DS. And am now on purees for a week. You'll get food soon, hang in there!! Then you'll have to contend with your gut being mad at everything you eat. 😂 I swear my stomach thinks most food is a bad idea. I can eat yogurt, pureed eggs, and fish (my surgeon told me I could eat fish early). This is amusing because eggs and fish are not my favorite foods by any means, but since my tastebuds have changed post surgery they are actually palatable! Everything else I've tried has ended badly in the bathroom... I'm hoping it'll get better once I move to Soft Foods next week!

    Pureed foods. Yuck!!

Loads of useful suggestions here (as ever!) Seems such a long time ago now. I am the exception to the rule - after 2 weeks of pre-op protein shakes and 2 weeks of post-op liquids my first pureed meals were like the tastiest things I've ever had. I lovvvved them. I basically pureed a selection of whatever my family were having (I cook for everyone) with a bit of extra liquid (gravy was best) and gobbled it all down! Saved a couple of tiny portions (like a tablespoon or two) for my other meals that day or the next and hit my protein goal mainly from protein yoghurts and protein shakes. Strangely I didn't have soup until the next phase but it's still a big go-to for lunch now, especially with lentils for added protein.

    November 2023 buddies

I had my Bypass surgery on November 2nd, one week ago today. I’ve struggled some, been emotional, but mainly can’t stand protein drinks anymore. It’s all I can consume that is liquid/pureed. I was always a very picky eater, mostly because of the texture of food, so liquid/pureed foods are not going well for me. I have 7 more days of this and need some suggestions on what others are consuming post-surgery. Thanks!
  10. If you have the space in the freezer to store everything then yes you could try to mix it up a bit. I would recommend having something available as a back up just in case, this is where I went wrong one day by thinking the soup I had made would be good for my meals that day only to taste it and it was disgusting, shops were closed and I had no back-up food and had to go to have a protein shake instead. If you are on the pureed/soft stage you could try minced turkey or chicken, bolognese (I had/have this a lot) and then I made a slightly different version as well that I found here - https://www.bariatricfoodcoach.com/lasagna-stew/ I used to put a generous amount of red wine in my bologneses previously, obviously had to cut that out for now 😁

3 week stall - Just a rant from a newbie

Puree can be tough. For some it’s a textural issue for others like me it’s a taste thing (everything tastes disgusting). You can puree a lot of things just add enough stock, milk, water, mayo, gravy, etc. to keep it the right dollopy texture/consistency. A friend told me she survived on pureed chicken with gravy. I mashed eggs with Mayo, was allowed thin instant oats, thin scrambled eggs, yoghurt, soups, etc. I tried pureeing tinned fish but blah! During soft foods I ate a lot of minced meat based dishes. Just made sure there was enough sauce/gravy to keep the meal wet. Also soft white fish, omelettes & made a couple of casseroles/stews & meat & vegetable soups. Yep, stalls can be frustrating & demoralising but remember an important step in your weight loss (when your body takes stock of your new needs & adjusts digestive hormones, metabolic rate, etc.). 17.5lbs in about 4 weeks is still pretty darn great. Even with the stall that’s an average of more than 4lbs a week. Can’t be upset with that.

    Pre-op Liquid diet

The instructions I was given were 48 hours of pre-op liquid, with total fasting beginning the evening before surgery. The longer liquid diet is to promote rapid weight-loss and shrink your liver, but some surgeons don't find this necessary, or only apply it to patients over a certain BMI. The 24-48 hours of liquid-only and/or fasting prior to surgery is just to clear your digestive tract prior to operating. Also, some surgeons don't require a puree stage and go from foods like yogurt and ricotta directly to moist proteins and fully cooked veg that you are instructed to chew for 30 seconds to a minute before swallowing (essentially pureeing them with your teeth).
  13. I had VSG November 30th, and I’m over the liquid diet😩I’ve tried to get creative but really how creative can a girl get! I still have another week until I can add pureed foods but sheesh! I had a calcium citrate caramel chew today and it was everything 🙌🏼😩😭 just the fact I got to actually chew something was the highlight of my day!

    So...it's happening!

I shall make sure to report back on my opinions of the pureed stage when I get there haha! I am definitely hearing that a lot of people have buyer's remorse initially! It is a big thing to go through! Thank you for sharing your experiences

    IT'S MY TURN !

This ricotta bake is great during the pureed stage. Definitely gives pizza ish vibes. https://bariatricbits.com/single-serve-baked-ricotta/
  16. You will get through it! Seems quite a few get feeling off. Our body's hormones have changed, not eating comfort foods, lifestyle changes are apparent. It should wear off before too long, but if it doesn't then you should talk to your Dr about it. I was in a humdrum for a week, it all seemed to change once I was able to start even eating puree and getting other food in.

    HELP

Protein - get it from protein Gatorade, protein shakes, bone broth, etc. You shouldn't be eating anything right now. Hair loss - it's gonna happen. How much? It varies from person to person. Nothing really stops it, and it'll end when it ends. personally, I cut my hair shorter, used thickening and volumizing shampoo and conditioner, and styled it so the middle part wasn't as visible. It's heavy shedding, not clumps coming out. Foods - once I went off liquids, I ate cottage cheese, hummus, avocado spread, refried beans, black beans, scrambled eggs, and continued with protein shakes and protein Gatorade. I never really did pureed food because that's nasty lol Everything will work out and be ok. Go slow, don't panic about the hair loss, and don't rush the eating schedule.

    ESG January 2024 Buddies??

Hi @Allie727- I had my procedure done in January at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. From what I’ve read online, compared to what they recommend for post-procedure guidelines, they recommend a pretty strict diet. Did the clinic provide you with how much food to consumer at each phase, along with how many calories? Here’s what they had me follow: - Weeks 1-4: Liquid diet (protein shakes + regular Gatorade). 60-80g protein, 64 oz liquids, less than 1,000 cals a day. I was probably only consuming 400-500 a day. - Weeks 5 & 6: Pureed foods (no more Gatorade). 60-80g protein, 64 oz liquids, 600-700 cals a day. A meal should be 2-3 ounces of food. - Weeks 7-10: Soft foods. 60-80g protein, 64 oz liquids, 700-900 cals a day. A meal should be 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup. I just started a regular diet/regular food today, 3/24. 60-80g protein, 64 oz liquids, under 1,200 cals (but I have a call with the dietitian in a week to see if that’s correct. A meal should be 1 cup to 1.5 cups. Like you, protein and water has never been an issue. I’ve never really felt restricted. I definitely feel full after I eat, but not sick-full at after eating. They also recommend you take at least 30 mins to eat. I found that if I finish my food quicker than that, I’ll get a stomach ache. I felt bloated earlier on post-procedure, but that slowly goes away. 6 weeks out, I had lost about 34 lbs at that point, but everyone is different!! Hope this helps!

    February 2024 Surgery Buddies?

The blood thinner shot does sting the first few times it's injected. It also leaves some pretty good bruising in the area of the injections. I did have some itching, but it wasn't abnormal. I was supposed to be on a 2 week post op liquid diet as well. But I was having issues with constipation, in part because of fiber not being in my diet. Even with taking Mirilax daily. So, they said I could start the puree'/soft food. I did eggs for a couple days with well mixed fat free refried beans for the fiber. Then I've been adding steamed carrots, broccoli (no stems) and a small amount of sweet potato. I'm not having an issue now. About 1 to 1 1/4 measuring cup full of food is all I can handle. To get my protein, I've been mixing Premier protein powder with a 1/2 cup of Chobani plain zero sugar yogurt.
  20. I've never heard of phases taking that long to get through, so unless you have a very unusual case with special circumstances, I think there's been a misunderstanding. A week or two of liquids, which I assume included protein shakes, is normal. After that, some programs put you on purees and some will say soft protein food that you chew thoroughly, usually once you're doing well with this, after a week or two, but certainly by week 6 or so, you will be told to slowly introduce veg, fruit, and finally starch and grain. I had gastric bypass on Feb 21. I had one week of liquids, which included yogurt, cream soups, and thin cream of wheat. At week 2, I was allowed to have cottage cheese, tuna salad, refried beans, ground turkey, and flaky white fish. At week 3, I was allowed to start including cooked vegetables and fruits and told to slowly start incorporating other foods, but to wait until 3 months for pork and beef. I had a setback with some vomiting, so I had to go back to liquids for weeks 4 and 5, but I had my 6 week appointment today and was told I was clear to resume a normal diet (minus beef and pork) and just needed to be cautious and keep track of/eliminate anything that caused upset. I found this video very helpful, although I will point out this program's way of reintroducing foods is not quite the same as mine, (or most others).
  21. 10 days post op today and i feel sooooo much better. Those first few days were tough ! I was kind of panicking because i wasn’t keeping things down well but the past 3 days have been a breath of fresh air. I moved to purees, and was able to eat scrambled eggs with a little low fat cream cheese, mashed veggies and white fish puréed together and i have finally found the one protein shake that does not make me throw up haha Every day is getting easier - i think i’ve finally mastered the quantity i can eat after the first 3 days of purees where i systematically threw up after eating too much … I realised that no matter what my eating plan says i need to adapt size of the meal to what i can actually manage. I can finally also manage water comfortably and that is such a relief !!

    October 2023 surgery buddies

If you have been craving some veggies, but have been worried about wasting them before you can finish them, Gerber (the baby food) makes a really great superfood veggie baby food, it's pretty good and perfect for those on puree or soft foods, plus you can put the lid back on and stick it in the fridge if you are not able to finish the 6oz in one go and only $1.97.

    Food Before and After Photos

My 3 weeks post op meal now is 5 oz in total, but most of the time I have to stop and go back to it to finish. It includes 3oz of protein, 1oz of vegetable and 1 oz of starch. All need to be mushy or moist. Bake salmon, cream of wheat and broccoli puree with onion and sour cream. It was delicious! Portion control is going to be very important now. I believe I can still eat the food I used to eat, but it will have to be post ob portion. I told myself “ I guess I can go to very nice fancy restaurants now and be full with just their appetizer.” 😂 lol My before meals
  24. I did forget to mention that even though I had to wait 30 minutes before and after eating, once I moved on to solid foods, I only had to wait 30 minutes AFTER eating. I could drink up to the point I started eating something. Not sure what the rationale was there - maybe there's more of a risk of nutrients being washed out of your stomach when you're on liquids and/or purees when you drink BEFORE eating, too (which makes sense since those don't stay in your stomach for very long).
