APRIL SURGERY BUDDIESS?
wendy4energyrenewal replied to KortGBP's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Thank you, longhaul68! I read about hair loss and was hoping it was a rare side effect. It sounds like it does get better when nutrition picks up?? Did you tell everybody you had weight loss surgery? My friends know, as they are my support system. I have not told anyone at work. I told my boss I'm having surgery. I told my families (I work with kids) that I'm going to be out for 2 weeks (BTW is 2 weeks enough??). It's not that I'm ashamed of the surgery, I don't think. I'm not sure why I haven't told everyone in my life. They'll think I'm sick when I start the weight loss! What have others said to people? -
HELP
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to Vanessa Correal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Protein - get it from protein Gatorade, protein shakes, bone broth, etc. You shouldn't be eating anything right now. Hair loss - it's gonna happen. How much? It varies from person to person. Nothing really stops it, and it'll end when it ends. personally, I cut my hair shorter, used thickening and volumizing shampoo and conditioner, and styled it so the middle part wasn't as visible. It's heavy shedding, not clumps coming out. Foods - once I went off liquids, I ate cottage cheese, hummus, avocado spread, refried beans, black beans, scrambled eggs, and continued with protein shakes and protein Gatorade. I never really did pureed food because that's nasty lol Everything will work out and be ok. Go slow, don't panic about the hair loss, and don't rush the eating schedule. -
Im currently researching a tummy tuck procedure myself- and strongly considering traveling to Miami or Mexico myself- how long did you have to commit to staying in Mexico for your surgery? As an aside- I went to TJ for my VSG as well. Wondering if the cosmetic surgery will cause hair loss like the VSG did? I dont recall the hair loss with previous breast reduction, so I hope not! Welcome any thoughts?

I'M TERRIFIED AND NEED GUIDANCE
Arabesque replied to Vanessa Correal's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I echo it is your decision & your reasons are your own too. But if you go into it, still questioning your decision & aren’t completely ready to make the changes you have to make, it is highly likely the surgery won’t be successful for you in the long term. I hazard to say that 80% of our weight loss & then 99% of our maintenance is all down to our commitment & willingness to do the head work & make the permanent changes to our eating & relationship with food. The truth,& it’s a hard truth, is some people do regain a significant amount of weight again if you’re not 100% in, you’ll more likely experience this. I didn’t have any comorbidities but I knew they were in my future. I was almost 54 & menopause had done a number on me & my weight. I didn’t like it. I didn’t want to be the size I was emotionally, psychologically, physically & yes aesthetically too. I woke up day & said enough. Made an appointment with my doctor that day & about 5 weeks later I was being wheeled into surgery. Best decision. Haven’t looked back. Happily maintaining at 4.6yrs. But you have time to make your decision & you can only do what’s best for you at this time. Maybe ask your surgeon for a referral to a therapist & talk through your thoughts & feelings with them. And if you decide no now, it doesn’t mean you can’t do it in the future, All the best what ever you decide to do. PS - The hair loss is nothing in the big picture. Yes, it can be frustrating & depressing but it only lasts for about 3 months +/- . The hair your’re shedding is hair you would have lost anyway. It’s just your natural hair loss cycle is accelerated for a while. Your new hair is still growing as usual at its normal rate. It’s the stress of the surgery, dietary changes, hormonal flushes, anaesthetic. So don’t stress yourself more by overly worrying about the loss - you may make it worse. Many experience hair loss after pregnancy and other surgeries too. I lost a lot with a stressful time at work. So it could happen with many things. The only person who noticed my hair was a little thinner was me & my hairdresser. A year later it was pretty much back to how it was. -
Hair length and loss
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to Pines's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My hair started thinning around 3 months post surgery. It thinned out until about 9 months out and then slowly stopped. I cut my hair to juuuuuuuust shoulder length and used volumizing and thickening shampoo and conditioner, and it's really helped. The longer your hair, the heavier it is and can make the thinning more noticeable. -
So, i have been dealing with hair loss even though i have a lot of protein and fiber in my diet and seem to always eat healthier options, what am i missing ? just need some advice or feedback if anyone is dealing with the same issue.

I had waist length hair at surgery start- not too thick. Starting losing hair about 3 months out, like others— and while the length helped hide it at the start, toward the end my ends were super thin. At 9 or so months out I went and cut about 6 inches- and it does look much fuller now. I can see baby hairs have been growing in all over, and have some about 4 inches that can stand out if I dont smooth them down, especially around the edges of my hairline. Luckily the regrowth is coming in white and I totally love it! No more coloring my hair, and it feels soft and healthy.

Gastric sleeve after menopause
Sherry57 replied to Sherry57's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It is, I guess I worry to much because the scales are not showing weight loss each week. -
Hey yall! Im 3 weeks out tomorrow and im on a stall today is day 4. Now im overthinking about is this it? is this all im going to lose? Im down 30lbs since my 1 week pre op diet and Im kinda doubting everything. I know everyone says "Trust the process" and im trying to!

I agree with @ChunkCat. And also add, yes it is difficult to hit those protein goals as you move through the first stages & you’re eating so little. On purées (cause I couldn’t stand to continue on the shakes) I ate a high protein yoghurt to boost my daily protein intake. (You can make it into a drink by blending with milk which also gives you additional protein). Don’t worry too much if you’re not hitting your protein goal every day in this time. As long as you’re close to it & getting closer you’ll be okay. It’s one of those things that gets easier as you progress. It’s likely you’ll lose some hair from around three months regardless of whether you reach your protein goals from the beginning or not. It’s your body reacting to the stress of the surgery, anaesthetic, hormonal fluctuations, etc. And it’s just an acceleration of your usual hair loss cycle. It lasts about three months. And your new hair is still growing at the same time you’re shedding just at its usual rate. It’s quite common after many major surgeries, periods of stress, child birth, menopause, etc.

March 2024 Surgery Buddies!
Uluvtay2 replied to Pines's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
New here! I wish i found this community sooner, but I'm glad to be here now. My Sleeve surgery was March 19th. Currently 2 months PO. I am still struggling with my liquid intake, averaging about 32-40oz daily (on a good day). I saw someone mentioned protein waters - ordered! (Thanks for that). I've been drinking Liquid IV which has been helping with my Dehydration, but I've been scared of going into ketosis 😫. Hair loss - no thanks! Finally can handle Fairlife shakes, but that's also been rough at times, watering them down has helped. Eating is better, not as painful. 38lbs down✨️🥰 -
I'M TERRIFIED AND NEED GUIDANCE
catwoman7 replied to Vanessa Correal's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
1). there are a lot more people who don't reach goal than there are who lose too much weight. Plus if you feel like you're losing too much weight, you can always increase your calories to put the brakes on it - or to start gaining. So I wouldn't worry about this one AT ALL. 2). fewer than 5% of people are able to lose weight and keep it off. You may be one of the lucky ones who can do that - and if so, and you're afraid of the surgery, it's not too late to pull out and try it on your own. I wasn't one of the lucky ones. I spent my first 55 years as overweight or obese. I gained and lost weight a million times and could never keep it off until I had weight loss surgery. 3). hair loss, if you experience it (and not everyone does), is temporary. I lost hair during months 5-8 post-surgery (so...for three months). It wasn't much, though. I could tell because there were more hairs in my combs and brushes, but I really didn't notice it at all when looking in the mirror, so I'm sure no one else noticed it. Plus hair loss after surgery is more like shedding - not huge clumps of loss like one might have after chemo. For a lot of people, they're the only ones who notice it. It's usually more loss of volume than noticeable "bald spots" - and it does grow back. to me, the risk of losing some hair temporarily vs. being morbidly obese for the rest of my life was a no-brainer. But you may think and decide differently for yourself - and there's nothing wrong with that. If you're not mentally ready for this yet, or want to try on your own to lose weight, then there's nothing wrong with canceling or postponing your surgery. You wouldn't be the first..or last. -
I have a Vp shunt for hydrocephalus.Wanted to know if anyone here has a VP shunt and has gone through sleeve surgery.

Did you have a gastric sleeve leak and if so what caused it ???
theinfernohere replied to KII's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I’m about to get mine done in a few days and I worried about this too. Like everyone else here said, at 1%, the odds are in our favor that it won’t happen. -
Hi Debby! Please can I ask what the purpose of the detox is? I know people do these for various reasons. If you have regained some weight after your bypass (if so, how much?) and you're wanting to kick start further loss then I agree with the others above - eat your protein first, veg second and fruit/carbs last. If you have another (health?) reason for a detox then it might be OK to follow what sounds like a very restrictive plan. I'd be worried about your protein intake with what you're proposing though.

7 Years after VSG Gastric Sleeve Weight Gain/Loss
JinnChan posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi, I am nearing the 7 year anniversary of my VGS. I initially lost 102 pounds. Losing the weight was easy after surgery. A year later I started to feel too small. I needed to wrap my head around my new body. I felt that I was too small and gained 10 pounds. I was able to maintain this weight for years but then the Covid lockdown began, I ran into problems. Living alone, eating, & very little physical activity led to a 20 pound weight gain. Today I have gained 40 pounds and I am working towards losing the weight. Has anyone experienced the same? Any advice or suggestions are appreciated. -

Ozempic or weight loss surgery ?
JennyBeez replied to Rose perez's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was on ozempic (for Type II diabetes) for about a year prior to my WLS. I found it helped my blood sugar numbers a fair amount, but didn't see much weight loss with it (about 20lbs over a year, but lots of fluctuating). I had no medical problems with it, but my best friend's mother (also Type II diabetic) started having kidney problems about 4 months into her own usage. I don't regret taking it, but I was worried from the beginning about how new the drug was (in terms of any science showing long term side-effects, etc). I don't think I'd actively recommend it for someone wanting to lose weight, but I wouldn't discourage them either. It's probably a conversation every individual should have with their doctor (if possible) to see if any existing condition might be exacerbated, etc. I guess the only time I would discourage it would be anyone looking for 'The Magic Pill' of weight loss. Just like any WLS, it won't work that way -- we have to Work At It ourselves. There's no magic here~ just lots of hardworking people needing a bit of a boost on their way. -
Not losing weight
Jonathan Carlson replied to JadeMonk80's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If all you're eating is protein, the weight will come off. Don't worry about a quick stall! Sent from my SM-G981U1 using Tapatalk -
Has anyone tried doing the weight loss shots? My surgery was just over a year ago and I still haven’t lost 50lbs. I started out with a lower BMI. So my surgeons are ok with where I’m at but I’m not. So I’m looking into the shots to help me a long. Just wondering if anyone else has had any luck
-
Hi I am 3 months out and I am experiencing hair loss, but honestly, even people that do Keto or Code Red where you basically only eat protein (btw hard on the kidneys) lose hair, so I think it's unavoidable. Things will get much easier once you can eat actual food (you'll learn by trial and error what works for you.)

Pre & Post-Surgery Vitamins UK
catwoman7 replied to Bypass2Freedom's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I agree with everyone else. Some hair loss and loss skin is pretty much part and parcel with weight loss surgery, especially if you have a lot to lose. Fortunately, for many of us, we're the only ones who really notice it. I had minimal hair loss so I'm sure no one besides me noticed it - and my loose skin was easy to hide in clothes. I eventually had it removed because it was driving me nuts, but here I am before I had it removed. I can assure you that I had a TON of loose skin, but no one knew It was there except me and my husband. -

August 2023 Surgery Buddies!
Maia03 replied to kayhay0714's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Happy New Year! And oh my goodness, yes the hair shedding has been crazy for me too. I am trying not to worry too much about it because I heard it is normal due to trauma of the surgery and the nutritional changes, and that it might come back in thicker than before. I also heard that some ended up with wavy hair who used to have straight hair before surgery. I am keeping my fingers crossed for some wavy hair, because mine wouldn't hold a curl for nothing! But at the end of the day as long as it slows down shedding and comes back a little fuller, I will be happy. I make sure to get my BCAAs/Collagen in at least once day, and of course my daily multivitamin. My 3 month blood labs looked good overall according to my surgeon's office, so I haven't added any extra biotin at this time. I do take a B-12 twice a week. Keep us posted how the hair shedding goes for you. Take Care, Maia03 -
Best multivitamin? Hair loss?
catwoman7 replied to BQT's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
there really isn't much - if anything - you can do about hair loss. It's due to your body's shock reaction to major surgery, and that's already happened (well it's the shock - plus the fact we're taking in a very limited amount of calories those first few months).. The shock speeds up the normal shedding/regrowth cycle. Some things can help with regrowth, but there's not much you can do about the shedding. Although not everyone loses hair, and some lose so little that others don't notice it - so you may luck out. (I lost very little - I'm sure no one noticed - I barely noticed - I just knew about it since there were more hairs than usual in my combs and brushes)
