    Pureed foods. Yuck!!

Hello everyone. I am post-op, had my first doctor's visit one month ago and scheduled for my second on 04/19. I am doing my best to read all of the literature provided to me as well as what I can find online. I am struggling with the thought of pureeing food. I just don't think I could bring myself to consume meat, vegetables or eggs that have been pureed. It sounds disgusting! Is this something that is a MUST or can we supplement with protein drinks? All input is appreciated. :0)
  2. Hello all, I'm currently on my final week of my liquid diet and I was wondering if anyone had good pureed food recipes? Because all I can think of is mashed potatoes and apple sauce; and does anyone know if smoothies or overnight oats count? Would greatly appreciate any effort to giving me some recipes as I'm currently at a loss for what I can do.

    Pureed foods. Yuck!!

Yogurt, cottage cheese and cream soups (as others have suggested) are all good at the pureed food stage, too!

Congrats!! week 1 is behind you now Do you have another week of liquids or are you moving on to pureed foods?
  5. SO happy for you!! Sounds like you've been doing all the necessary things needed for your health! I'm, however, struggling with the pureed diet. Do you have any recommendations for pureed foods? I'm struggling tremendously with the textures...and craving to just CHEW. lol. I'm going to look into Vidafuel today im so glad i came across your reply!

    Post-op diet troubles!

THANK YOU! So much for your kind response. This is indeed work and I intend to stick to the plan...it's been easy up until last week when I was able to start in on pureed foods. I took that as a challenge to see what I can thoroughly chew before swallowing. And I've paid the price by doing so...Easter was really hard. I'm trying my best to get my proteins in, but more than that too. Didn't really realize sodium plays a negative roll as well. I decided on surgery before gaining more weight. I was almost not qualified due to not weighing enough but my doctors worked with me. I have had a real bad relationship with food for so long. And with the pre-op diet going so well and the first 2 weeks of liquids i thought for sure I'd be golden by the time I hit pureed foods. But now I feel as if I've just set myself back. I have to really digest this new lifestyle change. Thanks for responding it really means a lot.
  7. What did everyone eat in the liquid week and the pureed food week. I'm allergic to eggs and whey so I'm trying to make my lists now on what I need to stock up on.

Thanks for the tuna fish Idea! Today is my 2nd day on pureed food and I tried it. I'm tolerating it quite well and it's tasty. I tried scrambled egg yesterday and my stomach let me know it wasn't happy! Maybe it was too dry or too chunky or something, because eggs are pretty bland, and I thought it would be a good starter food, but no.

Hard to eat 6 days out

I was on clear liquids 3 days, then full liquids for the first 2 weeks post op! While I craved substantial food at 6 days, my stomach wasn’t anywhere near ready for pureed food. Started pureed on day 15 post op and will be on it until 4 weeks post op. Next stage is soft food (weeks 4-6). At 6 weeks post op, I can slowly transition to solids

Bad pain any time I eat

I ended up at the hospital. I have extreme pain but no explanation as to why. My nutritionist doesn't know why either other than I ate phase 3 in phase 2. (Cottage cheese and black beans). Yes I was in pureed stage but even with the beans and cottage cheese mushed well... My tummy didn't like it. So I'm going back to just protein shakes, jello, broth and Greek yogurt for another week. Going to try pureed food in a week again. So far, I still can't drink any water/shakes without extreme pain. Shoots through my chest and shoulder still. Still unsure from anyone as to why unfortunately

    So...it's happening!

@ShoppGirl Thank you for your reply I have therapy every week, but was going to start looking for more weight-related therapists in my area as I am extremely worried about coping with the emotional eating. I am sorry to hear about the struggles you have had, and I hope it all works out for you. Pureed food sounds like the worst stage! I, like you, feel that pureeing 'normal' foods probably is gross haha! Hospital bag is actually one of the things I do need to think about! I shall add those to my list, thank you
  12. I'm a week out from surgery and have started on pureed food. I'm trying to figure out when I'm getting full without getting too full. Today I think I overdid it and it wasn't comfy at all! I get discomfort right between my breasts... the first few days after surgery, I was really sore there, and liquids hurt going down. They found a hiatal hernia and fixed that during surgery, and I figured that repair was causing the pain. But it's kind of in the same place where I get uncomfortable when I think I'm full. With that said... I'm curious about what full feels like to others. Thanks!!
  13. Yes, I felt that way until I was onto the puree stage and could suffice the hunger/growling with a little bit of food with consistency. I am assuming you are still on liquid only at this point? You are used to eating food, and your stomach is looking for it, liquids pass through pretty quick, it is essentially a funnel, it comes in and out pretty quick (~5 minutes). Once you get puree foods they last a bit longer in the stomach so the growling etc will go away.
  14. My surgery went well. I also had hiatal hernia repair. I was an outpatient and had little pain after coming out of anesthesia, was able to keep water down and walked....gas pains were mostly non existent. Currently having mild pain, due to soreness from hernia repair. Liquids going down well, ready for pureed foods. I have my two week post op on Wednesday 3/20. I lost 19 lbs in my two week full liquid pre op diet and 6lbs down from surgery, so a total of 25 lbs.
  15. I had VSG November 30th, and I’m over the liquid diet😩I’ve tried to get creative but really how creative can a girl get! I still have another week until I can add pureed foods but sheesh! I had a calcium citrate caramel chew today and it was everything 🙌🏼😩😭 just the fact I got to actually chew something was the highlight of my day!
  16. I can identify with the feelings you are having when trying to get food down... also being so tired! Some of my favorite pureed foods have been an egg scrambled with Ricotta cheese, cream of wheat made with veggie broth, and vanilla yogurt (zero) with some peanut butter powder mixed in it. I'm allowed to have hummus and have liked that occasionally. I hate that blocked feeling... I'm actually scared of it at this point. I'm trying to find a way to avoid it but haven't been successful yet. I can only eat a 1/4 cup of food at a time max. Have you tried using baby spoons? I've found that it helps me take small bites and eat slower.

    December Surgery Buddies!

Figured I'd join in! Had DS surgery on 12/18. Pre-surgery weight (about 1-week before) was 415, currently down to 375. Had to spend 4 nights in the hospital due to some complications (had very LOW blood pressure for a couple days due to kidney's not working properly) but improved each day. Felt very little pain (unless coughing/sneezing). Glad to be a part of the community here. Currently in pureed food stage, looking forward to the soft food stage in another week!
  18. I'm currently 3 weeks post-op from gastric sleeve surgery and am struggling BIG time with the diet. The pureed foods aren't doing it for me as the texture is not right...Has anyone else struggled with this? If so, please let me know what worked for you...I've always resorted to food when I'm feeling low and now I can't...I have snacked on no-no foods already and I'm petrified of returning old habits. I've gained 2-3 pounds in the last week and that's incredibly discouraging. I know it could possibly be water retention as my intake hasn't been a full 64oz per day. I know I'm not getting enough protein as well...I'm ready to resort back to a full liquid diet in hopes to lose weight over the next couple weeks...any suggestions would be incredibly helpful!

I'm glad it helped!! Oh yes, I forgot to mention that, moving to soft foods will help some, purees just don't have as much solidity to them. There is a huge difference between a 1/4 cup of pureed food vs 1/4 of a solid protein, even if it is a soft protein... At 8 weeks I was cleared for most foods and I think that is part of the reason why my hunger started to ease off around then. If your PPI is omeprazole it is possible it isn't working as well as you need it to, sometimes people need something like Pantoprazole or Dexilant, so if that gnawing hunger at night continues you may want to ask your doctor about it at your next appointment! ❤️

    Pureed foods. Yuck!!

My program skipped pureed foods and went directly to soft proteins with the instructions to chew thoroughly. But your best bet for purees is blended soups. You can make a very flavorful soup and puree it, and it will still be tasty (as opposed to pureeing meat, which is gross). Bean soups and butternut squash bisque work well. You might also try a ricotta bake in that stage, which can be made by mixing a cup of ricotta and an egg, spreading this in a greased baking pan, and topping with a non-chunky marinara and some mozzarella and parmesan, and then baking at 350F until the cheese is nice and brown, maybe 30-45 minutes. As for protein drinks, you should plan to be supplementing with those for quite some time, at least several weeks. Some people can get what they need from food really early, but others need at least one protein shake a day for several months. You also might want some plain, unflavored protein powder to add to things like soup or smoothies to increase protein.
  21. Try thinning out the cream soup with some chicken broth and eat only about 1/4 to 1/3 of a cup at most. Over time thin it out less until it is the normal consistency. Cream soups sit heavier than broth and my stomach counts them closer to a pureed food than it does a fluid. So I follow the food portions with them. I had to be very strict about this after surgery because just one bite too many and I'd be in the bathroom throwing it all up! So not cool... I love when people name their tiny tummies. LOL Mine has not claimed a name yet!
  22. I had my surgery on Jan 18th and i can take a little more water then before but its STILL a pain in the butt because i still have pain (gas?) when im drinking. Im supposed to move on to pureed foods in a few days but how when im not 100 percent with these liquids. Its slow moving and it sucks. It seems like im going to be one of those cases where it takes forever to heal or get on track and it sounds like maybe you will be the same (hopefully not). I go to the doc for my 2 week follow up on the 31st i will let you know what he says about all this.

    December Surgery Buddies!

Reading a lot about tiredness and fatigue, is anyone feeling the other way at night? I’m struggling to sleep! I feel tired but ever since the op I have not got to sleep easily, have tried walking further in the day, reading etc but doesn’t seem to help!! (I’m 3 weeks post op on Tuesday) Feeling really positive otherwise though, the weight is coming down and the pureed stage doesn’t seem to be bothering me so much!! Just need to keep up with protein water to ensure I’m getting enough in, as only manage a few mouthfuls of the pureed food! Xx
  25. Good Morning! Here is a update; I'm almost at my one month mark (on the 6th), I've lost a total of 40lbs. 20 Pre Op and 20 post op. I'm currently on Pureed foods, its going good. I eat mostly eggs with cottage cheese, ricotta bake and sweet potato. To help ensure I reach my protein goals, I will have a fairlife protein shake or Vidafuel. If you haven't heard of Vidafuel, its good to have, especially if you're on the go a lot. One 2oz shot is 16grams of protein, my dietician recommended it. There are two flavors Mixed Berry and Orange; orange is by far the better flavor. I'm struggling with my water intake, its been difficult to get 64oz in; I'm only getting about 43oz, so I've been doing hydrating IVs. My doctor prescribed hyoscyamine and that has helped me tremendously; it relaxes muscles in the digestive tract and reduces stomach acid. I have been walking and I think that's also helped with gas pains. Hope everyone is doing good!
