    Panniculectomy worth it?

Hi Writergirl, just curious: if your insurance will pay for skin removal sx, why wouldn’t you be able to choose the surgeon? Cosmetic surgeons do panniculectomies, and the results might be be aesthetically pleasing……

    Any August 2021 Bypassers?

I’m in the same boat. The holiday season threw me off. I will also admit to getting tired of feeling cold and tired, so the extra treats during holidays kept me toasty. I’m trying to get my weightloss groove back without being too extreme. So I looked back at my logbook. I loose weight when I drink all my water. I got back into it this week. I loose weight when I track my food. Still working on that, I was doing well half of this week. I know I can do better next week. I know I loose weight when I plan my meals. Gotcha, that took more effort and shopping but I did my planning and prep. Ok now I remember I loose weight when I switch my exercise up instead of the same old routine. Gotta plan that, think heavier weights, new class, new machine at home? What else could help me/you? Maybe more micronutrients, or vitamin D, or a phone call to friends or family, or a hobby to keep those hands busy, guitar, or crochet, a massage, I don’t know what makes you feel fulfilled or relaxed but I’m going to try them. I’ve lost 115lbs since Sept. 2020, but only 43lbs since surgery in Aug. 2021. I’m 5’4 or 163 cm and I’m half done with the weightloss phase. Oh yeah, my co-workers told me of an ax throwing place near me because people are so angry at covid, they go to this place to throw axes at stuff in a room! I also heard of a place that lets you smash stuff for 30 minutes for a fee. There’s pumpkins and dishes and stuff like that there. I like going to baseball batting cages and hitting balls, but they’re closed in the winter. Start googling ideas!

    Liquid protein supplement

I just tried the Biatric protein shots the crisp.apple.It sure does have a heavy test however it's not that bad Iam unable to drink 3 protein shakes a day. It also has collagen which is good for the skin but it doesn't share how much collegan @Biatricpal.com ? Iam only 7 days post op..

    Potatoes 5 weeks out

I made picadillo (Mexican recipe for ground beef with potatoes) and had no problems with them. Potatoes with skin on do have some moderate health benefits (high in potassium, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C and fiber). I wouldn't make them a meal by itself, but eating small amounts is not going to harm you and will help some.
  5. 14 days post op today I just can’t believe it has already been 14 days! I finally started loosing again. I did a 4 day stall. My sister had bypass 25 years ago and her daughter did too 5 years ago thank god because even though I had the sleeve I don’t know what I would do without my sisters help and wisdom! I am down 11 pounds since surgery which my sister said is really good especially since I only had 80 to loose preop. I guess I am more impatient than I had ever realized lol I hope everyone’s doing good - feeling way better today but my port site above the belly button still hurts a lot for some reason. - I am going to only weigh in and do measurements on Weds from now on. Btw - I was 41 inches in my waist preop and today I was 35 inches in my waist! I think I’m pretty sure where I lost most the weight from! Have a great week everyone!
  6. Thank you a lot Arabesque, this helps me so much! What do you mean my 7 oz is not a big portion? And 1350 kcal enough?.. my basal rate is 1200 kcal and i habe still to loose weight. You are so right - i thought it hat been and nutrition problem but it is not. Its bad Habit and wanting comfort an teasing. Therapie is right now not possible, no free client space. I want so badly work on my habits. Do you have podcast/book or online bariatric Programm recommendations which workes for you? Much love for you, Laura Sent from my SM-A125F using BariatricPal mobile app
  7. I know This exact feeling but it’s true if you loose to much weight to fast you will have more loose skin. I have been at the same weight a few days but I checked my measurements and I lost inches so that alone was amazing. My a1c dropped which was exciting so remember the scale isn’t everything . Just keep doing what they said you’ll get there

You look young so you have that going for you but how long You have been overweight and genetics also play A role as well as how much weight you intend to lose. I am in my early 40’s and I have lost 66 pounds and so far I do not see any loose skin however I am still 6 pounds from the top of the normal range for my BMI. I have a feeling if I decided to adjust my goal And I did get much smaller I may have some. But I agree with others that You can’t prevent it if it’s going to happen and the only way to get rid of it is surgery. The good news is that if you have a lot, and can prove it is causing you issues you may be able to get insurance to pay to have it removed. There are plastic surgery forums where you Can ask about how that works. I was warned that I did not have enough weight to lose to have enough skin to qualify for insurance to pay before my surgery. I sorta guessed from that statement that the more you have to lose the better your chances are of insurance paying for plastics. Which makes sense I guess a bigger loss equals more excess skin.

I've lost 193 pounds and am hoping to lose at least 20 more. I do have quite a bit of loose skin. It's almost all on my stomach and legs. I was always worried about getting loose skin, mostly because I was afraid it would be heavy and uncomfortable, but it really doesn't bother me much. I'm 50 years old and I don't know if I will get it removed. I already paid out of pocket for my wls, so I really can't afford a bunch of plastic surgery right now. You really can't see it under my clothes and my husband and I are the only ones who see me naked and he doesn't care. I was 393 pounds and I will take this loose skin any day over carrying all that weight around on my 5'3" frame. I included a Pic of me from New Year's eve. My arms have always been on the smaller side for a big girl so there isn't much loose skin there but I do have some. Most of mine is from the waist down. Keep in mind I am still losing weight so I don't know what it will look like later. The only skin that really bothers me is on my face. You really couldn't see a lot of wrinkles at my high weight, and you definitely can now. I feel like a look older than before. But again, I'll take this over weighing almost 400 pounds. I am healthy now and that's why I did this! Sent from my Pixel 5a using BariatricPal mobile app

Am I really gonna lose weight?

What kind of surgery are you looking to get? You will loose weight but its a process and you have to stick to it. Which is why most hospitals have support groups, nutrition classes and such to help you. Part of my preop is attending the support groups which i have next week.

@lizonaplane I’d def get to goal first that way you are in maintenance mode. Bc if you still have more weight you want to lose then you dont want to have to go bk a second time and tuck those loose areas again. That would be expensive for a second time. It’s already expensive once! Lol Let us know how you’re progressing! Sounds like you are really close!
  12. Question - I was loosing .5 a day average post op. Today I’m out day 13 and I haven’t lost anything since I started purée phase 4 days ago. I know a stall at a normal around week 3 but is this normal? I’m eating tuna because that’s all I seem to tolerate. Anyone else having this issue? I’m walking daily and have an appt on the 13th with the nutritionist hoping that’ll get things moving.
  13. When was your surgery date? Yes!! I want it gone too lol, but the quicker you lose they’ll probably be more unwanted extra skin. We got this!
  14. Congrats! You are almost at onederland. I was 241.5 surgery date. Didn’t lose anything before surgery (Dec 17th) which was annoying since I wasn’t eating and I was walking 10,000 steps a day minimum. 7 days out of surgery I was down to 228 (13.5 lb loss) and then stagnated at 228 for about the next 2 weeks. Pretty sure pms and my menstrual cycle prevented me from losing more weight. I stopped obsessing over the scale because I was feeling like I wasn’t losing after the first initial loss so now I will only weigh in this coming Friday and every Friday thereafter, however I do feel the difference in my close. I can’t wait to be out of the 200’s. It hasn’t even been 3 weeks out of surgery but I want to be “skinny” already lol, but I also don’t want the extra loose skin so I need to remind myself to be patient and be positive that I am on my way to a healthier life. Also I can’t remember the last time I lost 13.5 lbs so fast so I need to see that as a win! You are on your way as well. Happy for you and that you are feeling better now and seeing results!

    Thigh Lift

I'm wondering about this. I am only down 90lbs but My thighs are like the worst in terms of loose skin. Sometimes it gets caught under the toilet seat and I got a small cut from that. Soooo gross! I keep thinking I don't want plastics, but it's pretty bad already, and I'd like to lost 40-50 lbs more... if my body allows!
  16. Hey everyone I’m considering my next PS which will be a thigh lift. Just in research mode. Prob a year at least out from that. I’m curious for those who have had thigh lifts if it left your calves loose looking-like thigh is all tight now but calves loose looking. how far down did your surgeon go down the leg? To the knee or was it much higher? Also, looking for pics bc honestly that would be one scar that would be hard to hide and I don’t scar well. Anyone with experience that wouldn’t mind sharing that would be appreciated! Thank you!
  17. 5’2” female. At the 6 month mark, I was at 97 lbs lost. But this includes ~12 lbs lost during my 2 week pre-op diet, so really it was more like 85 lbs lost in the first 6 months immediately after surgery. FYI, during weight loss phase i went with volume and calories measures way to monitor intake (cuz there is a huge diff between 1oz of steak and 1oz of salad or 1oz of almonds in terms of “eat-ability” AND calories) With that said, at my 6 month mark, I was averaging about 700-ish calories a day, with each “meal” coming up to no more than 1 cup in volume (if I remember correctly). I use the term “meal” loosely as I was (and sorta still am) a grazer. But I’ve read enough on here to learn that my experience differs from many (and is similar to some). I have also learned that while everyone loses at their own pace and implements their own strategies, we all end up in the same place eventually so long as we stick with our plan and make adjustments as necessary. Good Luck! ❤️ P.S. I am 3+ years out now and have maintained below goal weight the entire time. I average about 1800 cals a day with moderate exercise. …. Though, full disclosure, I was 2lbs outside my “happy weight range” a couple days ago, which has since been lost (a couple good poops did it, I think, lol…that and I cut down on the copious amounts of Xmas chocolates I’ve been porking on). This morning I was 119 lbs even, but I feel better when I’m closer to the lower end of my happy weight range so am gonna shoot for 115 and see if I can get back down there without too much discomfort, ha!….we shall see.

Feb 2022 Surgery date, new here

Thank you for your encouragement. I can walk and do stairs, physically get around, but have intense muscle spasms, so that can limit my stamina - especially after I over do it - which happens a lot, especially around the holidays. I feel how gain negatively impacts me, so I’m hoping loss will offer some improvement. I do well in water and have both “active” and sedentary exercises I am working with … which I admit I was not great at keeping up with during the holidays. I try to modify my exercise during flair ups, so even on bad days I’m still doing something. I’m pretty good when I can keep things structured, but when my routine gets interrupted, I struggle. From June to Nov I did pretty well, so I’m hoping I can get back to that and loose at least what I’ve gained before my surgery date.
  19. So how did everyone's holiday season go? Usually, in the Before Times, I'd put on 5-10 lbs. between Thanksgiving and Los Reyes Magos. I'll be honest with y'all. I ate like crap this year too. Carbs and sugar and fat and hardly any vegetables or fiber. I did make sure I got my protein and water though. And I chose days when I'd be off track instead of having six or seven weeks of "eh, whatever, I'll start again January 2". Thanksgiving; St. Lucia; Christmas Eve and Christmas; New Year's Eve. I also had nice meals for my fiancé's birthday and went to a friend's party. The restriction did help, though I've discovered more "slider" foods that I need to avoid, ones that I can eat a lot of that don't seem to trigger my restriction. And yet, when I came to the end of the holiday season for my weigh-in this morning, I had lost 14 pounds over that timeframe. I'm stunned. Pants that I bought right before Christmas are now loose; shirts in XL are now starting to flap in the breeze a bit (but not so much that I'm going to size down QUITE yet). My body definitely has got used to the way I was feeding it; when I returned to my usual careful tracking each time, I felt so much better. I don't really restrict myself on foods unless I know they're sliders or I won't have any control (hello, Dot's Pretzels...), but it's a matter of just really carefully weighing things out. "The food scale eats first"—so nothing goes in my mouth until I've portioned it out and logged it.

I'm 64 years old, 5'4' and have lost 65 pounds since surgery in October 2020 and 97 pounds from my highest weight in 2013. Not only do I have excess skin, but I have the added problem of aging skin. BUT...…I'm amazed at the power of exercise, toning and strength building. I have focused the past 8 months on building muscle and it has made a huge difference. Now when I flex my bicep, what I see is muscle with some extra skin, not the shaking, sagging skin that was there before. I do core workouts and have built abdominal muscles, that does a great job of replacing a lot of the area where fat used to reside. I have people ask me all the time "Where's all your excess skin?" It's there, but not nearly as noticeable because when people see me, they see a toned body. The nicest complement I've gotten in the last few months was from a grocery store manager who said "You looked like you could bench press a 100 lbs." I thanked him and walked out feeling on top of the world.

I agree with GradyCat - if you end up losing all the weight you're hoping to (over 100 lbs), you'll have loose skin. Plastic surgery is the only way to get rid of it, but toning will help a little. I did have mine removed a few years ago, but honestly, I'd take my loose skin any day of the week over weighing 300+ lbs again. ANY DAY! Besides, it's pretty easy to hide in clothes. I just wore slightly oversized, long-ish tops with 3/4 length (or longer) sleeves. Ta da! Skin gone. Here's a picture of me from BEFORE I had plastic surgery. See any loose skin? Nope! (several months after this picture was taken, I had a lower body lift, arm lift, and breast lift. But I did this for myself. No one knew that loose skin was there before I had it removed - other than my husband and me, of course!)

You're gonna have excess skin, so you can either tone and exercise while you're losing weight to minimize the effects of it and make it as pretty as possible, have cosmetic surgery for it when you've reached your goal weight, or just learn to love it.

Excess skin is a given for most of us..the extent of it will depend on genetics, age, history of big weight loss/gains, time for skin to shrink to the most its going to, plus some other factors. Exercise, hydration and some good fat intake may help in a limited capacity, some people swear by certain lotions. If you are fairly young and have the right genetics you end up with minimal excess skin.

Okay after a long and hard 3 moth decision I've decided to get the bypass after I read about the side effects of my GERD possibly getting worse even cancerous. Anyways my question is when I'm losing weight how do I prevent myself from getting excess skin?

Almost 1 week out. Dumping not sure ??

Loose bowel motions are ok - all that liquid you’re consuming. You’re lucky you haven’t experienced the sudden, very unexpected, no warning signal watery diarrhoea. I got up to pee took a couple of steps then gush. Very unpleasant & embarrassing. Expect some constipation (may persist for months) but don’t worry until it gets to three or more days then take something. You aren’t consuming much that needs to be evacuated every day especially to begin with.
