    January Surgery buddies

Hi Kristen, GOOD LUCK! Very exciting. I didn't pack anything pre-surgery except for a very loose-fitting pair of sweats. I t-shirt. A helpful tip maybe make sure before you leave for when you get home you had a TV tray or something near your bed/chair where you will be spending much time. Put necessities on it like a tv remote, phone, book, Tissue, a container to spit up in if you need or feel nauseous, I also have a large walking stick to use as leverage to get up. (maybe tie something on it like a bathrobe rope on it for the times you can't reach it. Using any of your stomach/core muscles will take time. Good Luck!

Tendonitis, Rotator Cuffs, and Changed Physiology

I’ve had a slipped rotator cuff for 8 years and torn biceps same shoulder. I have gone to get it done just to find out preop I had a herniated disc on my neck that was life threatening and had that done first. I’m allergic to pain meds (recovered from my neck surgery and VSG with only Tylenol) I have heard the shoulder repair is worse than the knee surgery - had an ACL repair on my right one with just Tylenol and Benadryl- by day 2 of non stop crying I was ready to loose it. So I’m Terrified of getting my shoulder done. I’m in pain all the time but not the pain I’ll feel post op. Good luck to all of you who need to have surgery.

    Post Op Rants!!

I lost 10 pounds week one then only one pound since and I’ll be 4 weeks out this coming Tuesday. I’ve lost 29 pounds total from liquid to now. My Nutritionist told me I need to push my calories to 1200 a day to start loosing again. I’m walking 3 miles a day now so I’m super frustrated l. I was vegan preop and I was loosing way more than this and I’ve questioned if this was smart or not. My husband, surgeon and Nutritionist keep telling me to be patient I’ll loose eventually… but when? We shalll see I suppose I only had 100 to loose so now I have around 70 it is encouraging to see you’ve lost 107

    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

Taltz. So, originally they estimated my surgery to happen in Nov/Dec. They wanted me off of it for 2 months beforehand, since it effects my immune system, therefore effects healing. However, I was struggling to get over a virus, so I went off of it slightly early - in August. Then they said they weren't sure if they surgery would be before or after they holidays, because the hospital closed over a nursing shortage. When they called to schedule it... It was 2 months out, I'm assuming because of all of the rescheduling they had to do. So, I'm not supposed to start it back up until 2 months after the surgery, once healed up. But my skin is a mess, my scalp is peeling and hurting so badly, among other sensitive areas. I'm getting joint and nerve issues. I just never expected to be off of it this long. They said I might not need to go back on it after, but I can't see that happening. These issues were around when I was skinny, I have had it since I was 12, though not diagnosed until around 21. Sorry for the novel. 😬

Suggestions on helping with loose skin

I agree with what has already been said. I am sure you are already aware but I do wear shape wear garments under my clothes to help hide the loose skin a little.

    Thigh Lift

It will be an incision down the inside of the thigh and the front of my leg in the fold and I'm also having a second procedure with an incision in the gluteal fold to remove excess skin in the lower butt. I'm taking 6 weeks off work for recovery, whether I need that long or not. I'm a nurse, walk several miles a day, and want to make sure I can do that before I go back.

    Bad days

Thank you for your kind words, living in a small town doesnt make it easy and I dont have many friends here either . Its the type of town that people come and go from quite quickly. I have been waking up with what i guess you would call restless legs. I have fibromyalgia but it was in remission before surgery but it seems to have flared up again this really gets me down because i guess i thought i would feel even better loosing weight but it hasnt been the case yet .

    Disappointed Surgeons

Hello, I am just a week ahead of you and having much the same problems. Every time I try to eat or drink a new protein I am sick and nauseous for days. My team are worried I am loosing muscle mass as they say I have lost too much weight. I was told to eat 6 small meals. I can manage 4 tiny ones. I can eat tiny slivers of hard cheese, porridge, Melba toast, smooth pate, raspberries, Biltong, lollies, apple sauce, surimi sticks and drink a little milk. I am no where near any of my protein or water goals. I have managed all my meds and vitamins though, massive breakthrough. Lets just keep trying to do the right thing. Our teams will just have to be patient with us. I am very sure you will be a star student at the end of your journey.

You are doing fine, as long as you are loosing thats the main thing. I was unable to do shakes etc i lived of KFC mash and gravy and kids yoghurt pouches for my first 6 weeks. But you do need to watch your sugar intake but i think at this early stage as long as you get something in and you dont go over board you will be fine.
  13. I’m 24, 173cm, my pre-op weight was : 256lbs (116kg) Surgery weight : 113kgs (249) Month 1 : -9.7kgs (21 lbs) Month 2 : -5.5kgs (12 lbs) Month 3 : -5.7kgs (13 lbs) Month 4 : -2.3 kgs (5 lbs) Month 5 : -3.1 kgs ( 7 lbs) Month 6 : so far -4,3 kgs (9lbs) Current weight : 83 kgs It’s been 6 months and 11 days since my surgery and I’ve lost 33 kgs since my preop weight. As you can see, sometimes the loss is very minimal, but visually I’ve lost a lot of inches, I’ve had a lot of stalls, but you have to focus on something else and remember that even if the scale isn’t budging you are STILL loosing and you’re still having amazing non scale victories. I’m still 13kgs from my goal weight, but since I started lifting weights, I don’t care about that goal weight and I just want my body to be strong and lean regardless of the number on the scale. Good luck !
  14. My husband got me a fancy scale for Xmas and it measures body fat and bone density and all that. Downsides though are that it even says on the directions that the best way to measure is with clean bare damp feet (who wants to wet their feet to get on the scale) also, you have to create a profile for each person and then select your profile to get accurate measurement for you. Not deal breakers if you really want that info but I also heard that excess skin significantly interferes with the current that the scale sends through to measure those things. Idk. I have it now and I like that the scale part seems more consistent than my old one but it doesn’t really seem worth the expense if it’s not accurate.

    Skin

I've lost 75 pounds in a little under 4 months--I have some minor excess skin on my neck and under my arms so far. I had a LOT of excess weight around my chin, neck, and shoulders (I feel like I have a neck for the first time in years!). It's already starting to tighten up as my initial dramatic weight loss has started to slow and my skin can catch up. I want to lose 40 more so it'll be interesting to see what happens over the next year or so. I'm 39 and my weight gain was very gradual over a period of about 20 years, so I hadn't been at my "high weight" for very long, maybe 3-5 years, for background.
  16. Congratulations!! that is an awesome loss!! ===================================== My surgery was on 25 Jun 21....my 6 month mark was on Christmas day. Month 1 start: 251.8 (surgery day) Month 2 start: 232.6 (-19.2 pounds) Month 3 start: 221.6 (-11 pounds) Month 4 start: 212.6 (-9 pounds) Month 5 start: 202.0 (-10.6 pounds) Month 6 start: 190.4 (-11.6 pounds) Month 6 end: 188.4 (- 2 pounds [first major stall]) Total lost in my first 6 months was 63.4 pounds. I believe I am a slow loser and that is fine with me. I have had constant heartburn that is currently being taken care of with OTC medication and may need an additional surgery to repair it. It is what it is..... I am just glad that I am no longer obese and that my size 12 jeans are getting loose on me. I've still got 40+ pounds to make it to my goal but I am in no hurry. My high weight was 275 and everything is going the right direction....that is all I care about.
  17. Hey there everyone. New here, but I figure you all have more wisdom than I do. I am having such a hard time! I am currently sitting in the 170's. Usually around 172-174. I am 5'5", and an athletic build. For instance, I wear a size 6 sometimes a size 4. I started out my weight loss journey at 280, but my SW was 241. I workout often, and eat around 1200 calories a day, but for some strange reason I have literally not moved in over 2 months. I forget how long now, but basically since October when I hit the 170's. Im feeling very frustrated. I don't know what to do differently. I track, I drink my water, I do weight lifting, I follow my plan that my nutritionist gave me. (most days). And yet, nothing. Is it possible my body is at my set weight? I still feel like I have a lot to lose. I have a lot of loose skin, but I definitely have at least 20 lbs of fat left to lose. I don't know how I could do things any differently. Im thinking of trying Intermittent fasting, or maybe Keto. or both. But I just don't know. I am at a loss. Do you guys have any advice? I can't afford to reach out to my NUT right now, (I don't have one with a program, I have to pay out of pocket), so I am following her getting back on track program, which is high protein low carb. But even that isn't making the scale budge.
  18. So I’m starting to add more substantial things to my diet. My NUT said in the full liquid stage I could have cottage cheese (1% or skin milk small curd) or sugar free pudding as well. I tried a small portion of cottage cheese tonight, about two tablespoons because it looked like a lot, to start with, and I’m not full. Which is okay! I’m not hungry, but everything I’ve read said that your new tum will let you eat till you feel full and then not a bite more, but I don’t really want to push my still healing stomach. What do you do with that?

    Body dysphoria

I'm only 5 months out so everything is still pretty fresh... losing 100 pounds in that short of period of time has messed with my mind a lot so I get it. I put my pants on every morning and brace myself for them to be too tight when in reality this size is already getting a little loose on me (down from a 26 to 18, soon to be 16 I imagine within a month or so). When you've been obese your entire life (as most of us have) it takes some getting used to in order for our reflection to match what we see in our mind. In my mind I still picture my large arms, big tummy, double chin, and large thighs. So it's weird to look at myself and appear relatively slender. It looks like you're several years post-op. Have you considered therapy? It may benefit you to do it if not!
  20. Don’t get frustrated my Dr told me some patients do not loose anything for 6 weeks because your body is in shock and upset from surgery and trying to heal. Just stick to the program it will come off I go through 3-5 days loose nothing then I’ll loose a pound and then loose a little everyday for a few days then bam nothing again. I wanted more weight loss but the Dr said I’m doing good plus slow weight loss is better than fast because it gives your body time to catch up and tone up like you said. Also I was on the liquid preop for a little over a month so I’m so ready for real food. I am walking 2 miles a day and that is in the house because the weather outside it not walking weather. 3 more weeks I’m cleared to go to the gym. Also make sure you’re getting your Water in that helps a ton. I do a Protein Shake at 8 AM and pretty much only eat puréed tuna all day ever 2 hours 3 ounces and if I’m hungry again after 6 I do another Protein shake. i feel like I am eating cat food with all the puréed tuna but it’s the only thing my body likes right now
  21. Congrats! I’m a bit jealous I must admit. I lost 13.5 lbs the first week after surgery. I lost nothing on the pre op liquid diet after not eating for 7 days and walking 10,000 steps per day on average. This coming Friday I’ll be 4 weeks post op and I haven’t lost anything in the last 3 weeks. I’m starting to feel like God wants me to be fat and/or I just have to accept that I’m going to lose it slower than most but not have lose skin in the end and hopefully have the body that I actually want.. smaller but toned. I am happy for you but I’m not sure why my scale isn’t moving so soon after weight loss surgery. I want to be out of the 200’s already. I started at 241 and have stalled at 228 for 3 weeks now. I’m frustrated. Any tips?

    Body dysphoria

My husband and I still wouldn't have been legally married if it wasn't for the state stepping in and saying I had to have an immediate family member live locally to care for me after surgery. We would have grown old together without a piece of paper to tell us to do so. I imagine we would have been in our 90's before we looked at each other and be like, "well, the kids have grandkids of their own now, suppose we should get married for insurance purposes since we're fixing to die soon?" I don't regret marrying my husband, I do regret not having any pictures that day, however that moment will always take place in my heart. February 4, 2016 2pm: Married, February 5, 2016 9am: WLS Day- 231lbs. As February approaches this year, I look back into time. 6 years it's been and I still struggle every day with my size. I can't see it, I still buy clothes too big for myself and I was court ordered a couple years ago to update my driver's license due to my drastic transformation resulting in a steady 109lbs. Skin surgery is recommended for me due to repeat infections and I am not sure is my mind will ever catch up to my actual bmi. Sent from my moto g play (2021) using BariatricPal mobile app

Hi Charlotte! amazing! They are a fab team and the nurses were amazing during recovery. im doing really well now. I can eat anything in moderation. Still small portions but I’m really happy how it’s gone. yes those first few months were certainly difficult, but remembering the end goal gets you through. Speak with the team if you have any concerns, I assume you have Jane as your dietician and she’s lovely and will help with any advice you need. it’s all about changing your relationship with food, which took me a good few months. I felt i was missing out for a while, but now I can eat out with family, and I navigated Christmas well. I still enjoy food, but I have a different respect for it now. just hold out and take your time and let your body tell you what it needs. Remember vitamins and I also still take baricol for my B12 which Mr Sutton recommend. I’m reaching 1000 calories on a good day but still have restricted days where my stomach just doesn’t allow anything so I stick to protein shakes. Here’s a before and after. (I’ve lost another 6lb since the after photo) i want to loose another 8lbs but it’s slow going now and just letting my body do it’s thing. good luck in your journey! Any advice needed let me know.. loads of lovely people on here to chat to. xx

    Panniculectomy worth it?

it's not really cosmetic - I don't think they attempt to make you look "pretty" - but they do remove the excess skin. I might have been OK with it because I'm in my 60s and have been married forever, so I really didn't care what I looked like under my clothes - I did it more so my clothes would fit better and my skin didn't slap up against my body while I was exercising. But I decided to go for the whole lower body lift, not just the panniculectomy. if you want something that looks more natural, then go for a whole lower body lift (also called a 360, I believe). They do front and back, pull up the mons area, reposition your belly button and create a new, natural-looking opening for it (so it looks like a normal belly button), etc. And as the above poster said, they usually do liposuction and muscle tightening, too. Appearance-wise, it's going to look a lot better. That is, if you care... if your insurance covers panniculectomies (and if so, you're lucky!) but you want to do a full lower body lift, many of them will at least cover the panniculectomy part of it.

    Panniculectomy worth it?

I’m a week out post op. I can see results already. My insurance paid for it. I was shocked that they would because although I had excess skin it wasn’t to bad. I can definitely see a difference though even through the swelling! My surgeon said that minor fixes can be discussed (ie dog ear and fluid) if need be. I’m 52 years old and my mother in law 79 yes young as well as my sister in law 66 years young are also going to get it! Lol on the meds right now so not sure if I’ve provided a little information/ personal experience to you. I think they have to refer to it this way plus liposuction and muscle repair isn’t included. I want to add that my surgeon went a little bit past my hips and I was like waaaa when I saw this!
