    Keto Rash

With us eating low carbs and high protein and probably falling into ketosis, has anyone experienced a keto rash? I had a rash on my arm a week ago and today have one on my neck. I heard someone on YouTube mention "keto rash" and had never heard of it. Just wondering if my rash is temporarily something else or if in fact it could be "keto rash".

    Calorie Intake Concerns

Thanks! I intend to stay on keto but want to make sure I'm not screwing up my thyroid hormones. So I'm really interested in this. Appreciate it!

Pre op diet started Friday 1/13

Okay, so it is just meats and egg whites. I would suggest that you search for "Atkins Induction Recipes". That's what this list looks like, to me. Make sure that it's the Induction phase. You're going to be thrown into ketosis. I would suggest that you add an electrolyte supplement to your diet, to minimize keto flu symptoms. Personally, I use the Mio sport drops in my first glass of water everyday.

My highest weight was 323 and my current weight is 299. I have not met my surgeon yet but I am waiting for a call. I am really excited to start becoming a new and better person. My diet right now consists of Keto. Wish me luck

    June 2020 surgeries

I’m in Tiajuana right now. Have my VSG tomorrow. Very excited, not really nervous. Time to start this new life. I quit caffeine a couple months ago and dreaded giving up my decaf coffee with cream, didn’t think I could do it. Started clear liquids yesterday, no problem. No problem today either. It’s all in the head. I had to do the 1 week pre op diet but I actually started it about 2 weeks ago and then got perfectly strict 9 days ago. Keto stripped my urine this morning and it was large meaning I’m in Ketosis which is very good because it means my liver has used up all the glycogen stores. I’ve been hungry these past two days due to the liquid diet and when my stomach starts grumbling I just down some jello and hot tea or my lemon water. Just an FYI for everyone when you do the liquid pre-op, absolutely make sure you get bone broth which has 10 grams of protein. Protein is Very important for preventing muscle wasting, promoting healing and keeping you a little bit fuller.
  8. I had mix feelings about this. For now, I've chosen to still but the same stuff in the grocery store. Our pantry is filled with Doritos, Pop Tarts and other stuff that I don't eat. I felt that my new way of living shouldn't translate over to punishment for the rest of the household. Even when I fire up the grill I still make much of the same old classics they love, yet I avoid. After all....I'll be faced with those same temptations outside the house, why not be able to flex & develop my self-control muscles in the safety of the house? I can certainly understand the opposite way of handling this, though. The only time I've ever successfully lost weight was when I followed strict Atkins. I ate over 2500 calories a day on that diet and lost almost 150 lbs in a year. But I lacked the will power to STAY on it. I'm seeing surgery as being the tool I need to not start eating crap again. I'm certainly not going to sabotage myself after going to such extremes. But yes, I lack the will power myself to never eat crap again unless I have another tool in place. For me, I have been easily able to stick to a low carb lifestyle post op, because I am not hungry and I can eat small portions. My issues with Atkins/Paleo/Keto etc has always been I was still hungry and over eating, even eating the right things. The sleeve makes it easy to stick to the lifestyle. I already had the will power but I was still over eating, and then I would stall and just quit. I can't quit with the sleeve. There is no WLS that will give you will power. You can eat around the sleeve, the RNY, lapband, all of them. DS is probably the only one you can't eat around because it is so extreme. Mentally you have to be in a place for WLS to work for you, or it won't. I think it is good you are asking a lot of the questions you are asking but you don't really seem ready for WLS. It seems like something you are agreeing to because your healthy is failing, but you don't really seem to be at the end of your rope with your weight yet. JMO Agreed. The lack of hunger once post-op has been a much appreciated aspect. Sounds good. Remember....we were answering your original question. You've taken it to a new level of resolve, which is all very good. The other tool that I've found to be highly effective with losing fat: EXERCISE In fact, I'd rank the post-op tools in the following order of importance: 1) Lack of hunger 2) Exercise 3) Restriction The way exercise helps me is on several levels. One is in terms of understanding what a calorie feels like. Punch in your stats on any treadmill or elliptical and hop on and do some work for an hour. Get off and see that you burned enough calories for 2 candy bars and you'll never again won't a candy bar. You'll equate that sweat effort with willpower and you'll understand how bad junk food is. Another way is in how you'll feel after sustained exercise. You'll feel better all day....and even better the next. Add some weight training into the deal and you will really start to feel GOOD. The effect it has on your body will soon become visible. Tone and structure. Improved posture. An easier stride. Clothes fit better. All the sudden you'll SEE it. Others will see it, too. It becomes another way that your willpower to resist junk food is strengthened. You'll be a whole new person before you know it. It can occur overnight, literally. For me.....it happened when I was sitting up in my easy chair one night. I couldn't make it to bed. I couldn't do much else but sit in that chair. I'd been sitting there for six weeks. Six weeks of going to PT sessions and taking meds to get past a back injury. One night I couldn't sleep.....just like the night before.....the meds and the pain had me wide awake. I decided that night to make a change. To find a way to get my legs beneath me and to change. By the time the sun came up the next morning I had a gameplan. I knew that wls would be part of it. I lost a nice chunk of weight in the next couple months and then had my VSG. It's been game-on ever since. It all came back to that one night.....everything that's occurred since was set in motion on that night. I'll never forget how bad I hurt then....unable to move or even breath deeply without crazy pain. Never again will I let fat be a contributor to that type of situation. I want this stuff burned off and turned into fuel. I have a hopeful eye to the future of how I'll adjust my diet once my body has burned the onboard fat for fuel. It'll be an interesting place to be.....another phase to live in. Looking forward to that.
  9. I forgot to answer this. The first 3 months I ate what I was supposed to eat according to my dietitian's plan for me (protein, no fat, no carbs except non-starchy vegetables). When I came in on my 3 month followup, I'd lost already 68% of my excess weight (or excess fat). The goal for my doctor is for his clients to lose 30 - 50% in their first year & I surpassed it. The week before my 4th month post-op I drank alcohol for the 1st time (was on my anniversary vay day) & have been following the Atkins & Ketos diet. The only starch I eat is the occasional potato, but that's less than 2 oz a serving. My serving size is still small, about 5 oz a meal. And I exercise 3-5 days a week. I feel great. I was obese since 2008 & got the solution for it this year with WLS. I was never obese before that so people that knew me back then say I'm looking like my old self. My new friends I met after 2008 are proud of me. I don't think people treat me that much differently. I've always acted confident & have a big personality so people treat me based on how I am, not my looks (thankfully). I've always ignored haters when I was fat & will still ignore them now that I'm thinner. I keep positivity around me. Height: 5'0" Weight for WLS consultation: 216 lbs. Surgery date: 2/13/17 Goal: -71 lbs for healthy BMI (about 145 lbs). Current weight: 145 lbs, now ready to lose 15 more past goal. My profile picture is not me. It's my "FITspiration" body.

Looking at the jerky that @Orchids&Dragons recommended now. Trying to see which one has the lowest amount of carbs even though I know jerky is something I used to eat when doing keto before surgery. They definitely sound DELICIOUS, the protein is awesome and the calories are low enough! My youngest daughter and I..even though we never exercised (well, I swam) before my WLS, are doing what we have learned is basically called 'day hiking'. I'd like to have something I can put in our little pack to take with us and I think @AngieBear also mentioned putting some type of snack like this in as she was going hiking. I need to follow this thread as it has given me so many ideas. I'm getting a little tired of the same 4 to 5 things..lol You guys are so awesome. Such amazing ideas and willingness to share!!

Oh, and I'm scheduled for 6/17. (RNY - was gonna do sleeve but I decided on the RNY after talking a lot with my nutritionist and doing research) Was supposed to be May 4th, but was postponed due to COVID-19. I was feeling pretty hopeless that entire month and a half when it was cancelled (cancelled late march..), so I gained some weight. Luckily, my surgeon said no more weight gain and we can still do the surgery. My insurance doesn't have any requirements but the 6 month weigh ins. I'm 16 days away and I"m pushing myself with eating more veggies, more protein and drinking more water. It's stuff I've done before, because I lost ~80lbs on Keto a year and some change ago, but gained it all back. I figured this time, I can do all those changes I made w/keto, and the new tool of the surgery and I should be set. 🤞

    Food Aversions After Surgery

Oh yeah Isopure is a good brand i forgot about! I used it when I did Keto. Did your surgery team give you all this good advice or you learned on your own? I'm learning more from you guys and my book than them lol. So Mashed Potatoes is allowed in the pureed stage?? That will be a lifesaver. Glad to hear the shake worked out!

    Smoking hookah

Yah, I'd be scared of the munchies, too. I don't like to smoke and prefer edibles, but all the ones I have are from pre-surgery and they have sugar in them since they are gummies. I'm afraid to eat them because I don't wanna dump! That would be a hell of a bummer, man... As many Keto dieters as there are, there must be some low carb edibles.

    Carnivore?

The broad keto would be much better for you. It would be something that could be more easily maintained, and people would less likely fall off that because of less restrictions. The more you restrict yourself, the more likely you are to want to cave in. A lot of people can't process sugary foods, and you'll get sick if you try to eat too much. Once you are post op, your body will adjust to eating healthy things and want healthy things more often, so maybe you can indulge the sugar craving with something healthy, like fruit. Also, I agree with colormehappy. You NEED that fiber to go to the bathroom. Constipation is a BIG deal, and it SUCKS. I can finally eat veggies now with every meal, and my bowels are much happier because of it. (TMI, I know)
  15. Thank you both so much, this has already helped me. Smanky, you are right, I do just need to keep my eye on the prize and remember why I’m doing this. I’m doing this for a healthier happier life. I’m not overly worried about the purée stage and I know all these stages are just a temporary thing which helps. I think the most part I’m worried about is the socialising with friends. I think I will take you’re advice catwoman and avoid going out for meals and just meet for teas or coffees. Luckily I am in my final year of nursing school next year so I won’t be able to see my friends as much as I usually would anyways which I think will help. I’m about 10 days into the pre op diet so I have 18 days to go. Myself and my friends are usually social butterfly’s and enjoy a few drinks so that will be a little strange but I know I can do it. I’ve done it prior when I did the Keto for a year. That’s a good idea with the plastic containers :) Yes I’m extremely lucky to have my partner and you are right, it is no one else’s buisness, I was just unsure if I tell a few people or no people. I’m still undecided and suppose I will wait until the time. I’m so happy to hear there are minimal complications for most. Thank you both for all your advice and support :) One more question, it seems it has been a while since you have had your surgery. How did you find the regain period and keeping off the weight and have any old habits tried to creep back in? Thanks again

    Keto diet question

Thanks for the response. I agree with most of your comments. Keto definitely is not for everyone. Although Keto does not require calorie counting, it also isn't a license to ear as much as you want as long as it's on the diet. I track my calories daily and stay at or below 1500 a day at this point. I will eventually go up closer to 2000, but this is working for now and I am only 14 weeks post-OP. I will sit down with my nutritionist in three months after I have my next round of bloodwork to see if I need to make any changes. I will say one thing that should apply to any health diet---stay away from commercial, processed foods and beverages. Don't eat anything that l, when you look at the ingredients, sounds like it was invented in a lab. Stay away from simple carbs and sugar. We don't need them. You can't go wrong with a whole foods diet, with or without keto. Sent from my SM-G965U1 using Tapatalk

    Keto diet question

I had my sleeve May 2013. I still have restriction, but have not been successful in losing all the weight I wanted to. I had the sleeve surgery in order to reduce the amount of insulin I was taking, and to be healthier, not thinner. At least, that's what I told myself. I did reduce insulin from U500 to U100, via pump, and my bp evened out. However, I am about to have bypass surgery, in order to get skinny and live healthier for the next 40 years! I realize nothing will change though, unless I change my habits for the better. My dear friend has been in every diet out there, but has had the most luck with Keto. She even just had all-over body plastic surgery to remove her excess skin. She says shes had the most energy in her life, and can think so much more clearly than ever before. For her, it's her new way of life.

    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

@Carla Ogwin it’s weird everything was fine with the sugar free packets until this week so idk what happened. I’ve had ground beef but it was low fat and I just had alittle in a bean meat and cheese keto street taco. Today I had 2 spoon fulls of refried beans, 2 cut up grilled chicken nuggets from Chick-fil-A with alittle cheese and it was so good. I thought I was drinking too soon, or eating too fast as well but I think it’s just the sugar free drinks. I might try them again in a few weeks. There was about 5 days were my weight didn’t change and I was so sad but then it went down but it’s definitely going down closer now than it did which idk if I like that.

    Sandwiches and chips

The further out I get, the more I adopt the attitude of Never Say Never. I have regular crap food in my diet. As I do healthier stuff (i love me some salad). I love food and can thoroughly enjoy eating in my much smaller quantities. Balance and portion control is key for me. I started eating bread again (the regular, non-keto, full-everything kind WiITH butter) about 2-ish years post op…and surprise, surprise, I didn’t implode. Warm, fresh bread is THE BEST (my Mr. is the bread whisperer lol). Now, I won’t eat 5 slices anymore, I’ll likely just have 3-4 bites (as it is very filling for me), but still. Other than excess sugar, I can enjoy a wide range of foods with no ill effects nor unintended weight gain. Im 3 years post op and been maintaining my weight consistently at 115-ish since reaching goal almost 2.5 years ago…non-healthy food choices (with portion control) and all. My most recent labs a couple weeks ago showed once again that i am the picture of health. I do understand that for some folks, some foods are triggers or potential starts of slippery slopes. I guess just know what your boundaries are and strive to stay within them. You may not be perfect, but u can be perfect ENOUGH. Indefinite denial and avoidance, especially if it causes you angst is a meltdown waiting to happen. P.S. For those early in the process, for me it helped to tell myself: “Not right now, but maybe later”; or, “This kinda sucks, but it won’t always be so”. Making peace with the fact that nothing is forever helped with accepting my present circumstance. and who knows? what u really want today may not even be on ur radar tomorrow or next week or next year. And if it is, you can always have it then. Good Luck! ❤️

    Trying NOT to fear fat??

Well this is weird to me, since I lost most of my weight eating Keto, high fat, and basically no carbs. Your body needs good fats, you have no biological need for carbs. If you are a female and you want young healthy looking skin, you need fat in your diet. There is a reason I look 10 to 12 years younger than I am. FAT. So you basically eat just pure protein each day? What are your macros like, on a normal day? She talks a lot about diet here, don't be mislead by the title.

    Keto diet question

This is really for sleeves who are far enough out that are eating actual meals.... have you ever tried the keto diet? Good? Bad? Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app
  23. Are you sure you’re getting all your liquids in (64 or more ounces per day)? How many grams of protein are you consuming per day? I had my surgery on 1/2/18. I lost 20 pounds on the pre-op diet (which was almost 3 weeks long). I started out at 229 on 12/15/17 and was 209 on surgery day. Today I weigh 188.4. I had been in a stall for about 2 weeks. I started upping my protein a bit as well as upping the amount of liquids. In addition, I started playing around with keto type foods and I feel that has helped as well. I have only been walking as exercise, usually 2 1/2 miles every other day. I upped that to 3+ miles every other day and the scale started moving again. I have pretty severe degenerative disc disease in my entire spine, so I usually can’t walk every day due to pain. The days I do walk I try to push through the pain. Everyone will lose weight at their own pace. It sounds like you are a lower BMI, so you will likely lose way slower than someone whose BMI is higher. Hang in there......follow your plan and you will eventually start losing again.
  24. i'm 3.5 years out; gained about 25 lbs. have little control. don't have great access to doctors-had to change docs due to insurance change and new doc only wants to see me if i'm going to discuss revision. don't feel I need revision. yes I have reflux again, but I've gained a lot of weight back which was always the cause of my reflux in the first place. NUT recommends a 'balanced diet' which I don't agree with. I can't eat hoards of fruit, sugar, and carbs and be successful. just looking to connect with some true vets and try to tackle this together. hubs needs some help too. we're both drinking pop, although i'm drinking mostly diet. trying very hard to get off the pop. we're just not sure if we should be doing a 'bariatric' type diet with protein base, shakes, broths, etc like post op and progress from there, or if something like Keto is the correct route. honestly I've had issues with milk post op-lactose intolerance- so doing shakes makes me a little nervous, also experiencing serious dumping syndrome with heavy fat meals, so that makes me nervous about Keto. thinking that a baseline bariatric plan is they way to go, and maybe try Fairlife milk, or coconut milk??? I appreciate ALL help, advice, etc. I feel very lost, 3.5 years ago I was the MOST driven, focused patient that my former surgeon had. he was convinced I would be totally successful, and I feel like a total failure.

    Food Database?

I am wondering if there is a food database where I can input specific restrictions on certain macros to find something that will work with my diet. For instance, I am currently on the keto diet and I managed to hit my limit of carbs and and am way over my allowed fat for the day (damn you, IKEA meatballs and Oreo eggs 🤬), but I don't have enough protein! Normally I eat the same thing everyday because it's easier since I know everything is being met. However, on days like today, I am struggling to find something that isn't going to add more carbs and fat to what I've already managed to shove into my body. So, anyone know of a database where this information could be found? I get that brands vary, but it would at least point me in the right direction (and I am getting a little tired of protein shake, tuna, and yogurt everyday 😅).
