Definately open!!!! I love to talk about it and answer questions for the most part. Although when your open and you don't lose as fast as the girl with the gastric bypass people are usually thinking whatever you had done is not working. I hate that part of it.....

I was a revision which means weight loss is slower, but I am 5'4" and started my journey at 286 lbs and today I am 246.3. I am 1-month post-op. I'm using the 3 patches that the bypass patients use plus one multivitamin. -

CAN'T STOP LOSING WEIGHT??
New&Improved replied to New&Improved's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My bypass was 120cm -
Typing this post from the gym this morning. Literally one year ago this morning, I was on the way to the hospital for the band-to-bypass revision... Today, I'm going to run 5 miles on the elliptical... Life has changed and I am so thankful for friends, family, and this community for the support and encouragement along this journey. As I often tell folks, I may have reached my weight loss goal, but the war of the scale and heart remains...always need to focus on maintaining a healthy weight and living life. Moderation is my friend. Binges are no more and emotional eating is always on my mind...... Reflection is key. It's not easy, but the surgery wasn't a magic pill -- just a tool among other tools to help me along the way. Maybe my new birthday will be Jan 21, 2013 instead of my actual birthday

Recipes for life after weight loss, revised and updated
jmg1263 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 5 days post sugary, gastric bypass. It is NOT easy. I finally today am feeling a little bit better. I keep telling myself that this period is going to be HELL but follow the program and it will be ok. I had to meditate through the pain at times. Tomorrow I am going to begin with a 2000 step walk. I was feeling low today also but then I got a recipe book in the mail that really lifted my spirits. The food in it looks amazing. Really good looking stuff but prepared in a high Protein low calorie way. I have NOT read the entire book yet but I know the future will look brighter. I have not yet had a chance to read it but I did thumb through it. A GREAT looking pizza recipe in there and I can't wait to try it. Book is: recipes for after weight loss surgery, revised and updated by Margaret Furtado. There are so many amazing looking recipes in there. Pizza, Humus, Sausage and Lentil Soup, Latkes, crab cakes, stroganoff. Looks amazing and the book is loaded with pictures and lots of wonderful looking stuff. I am actually excited and it lifted my spirits. One example recipe is below. AGAIN, I have not read the entire book so I am not sure at what stage I can start this but it is promising. I was miserable but 5 days after surgery I am finally feeling better. Sharing one of the recipes in the book. Pita Pizza: 284 calories. 25.6 grams protein. Makes 4. 4 small 4 inch whole wheat pita breads. 1 can 6 0z, low sodium tomato paste 1 teaspoon dry oregano 1 teaspoon dry basil 1 teaspoon dried thyme 4 tablespoons grated parm cheese 1 cup cooked boneless skinless chicken breast cut into small cubes. Or, chicken italian sausage, or ground meat. 1/2 cup fresh slices mushrooms 1 can, 2.5 oz sliced black olives 3/4 cup (85g) shredded part skim mozzarella cheese Oven 375. Lightly spray a sheet pan with cooking spray. Put on all toppings and bake aprox 15 minutes. Picture of the pizzas look AMAZING. NOW, I have to say I have not read the entire book yet so I am not sure when this recipe can be used but it is good to know that down the road a healthy pizza is possible. Looking through this book raised my spirits. John -
I got my band in July 2013. I lost 25 lbs during the pre-surgery liquid diet, but only 10 additional lbs in the following year. I had issues with the band once I started getting fills. I had a hard time keeping food down and threw up almost every time I ate solid food. My surgeon then started the fill/unfill game. I went back and forth so many times. While this was going on, I continued to have unrelenting port pain. It was unbearable from the day I had surgery. My surgeon said that I'd get used to it, but I never did. It just hurt all the time. It prevented me from exercising, sleeping, and I couldn't even sit in a chair in the same position for too long. In May 2014, my surgeon basically washed his hands of me. He unfilled my band completely and told me that it had to be removed because my body just "rejected" it. He also told me that he would not recommend another surgery for me. I regained 30 of the 35 lbs I lost. I got a second opinion and had a revision to gastric bypass 3 weeks ago. My new surgeon told me that he had never seen a lapband port placed in the position mine was in. He said that it was too high and was sitting right on top of my highest rib. He wasn't surprised at all that I had so much pain. Vindication! My surgeon and PCP both doubted my pain when I complained about it ALL THE TIME. Long story short - I'm thrilled to have the band and port out of me! I'm still on the mushy food phase right now with bypass, but so far so good. I don't have any hunger at all and have to remind myself to eat. That's something that never happened with the band. I'm much happier and more comfortable. The port pain really put a damper on my life for 1.5 years. So glad it's GONE!! Since the day of the revision surgery, I have lost 21 lbs.

I am almost a year from anniversary date of gastric bypass. Woot woot! But my knees are now killing me. Before the surgery I had issues with my knees and had anthroscopic surgery on the right one. However, now both my knees hurt so bad that climbing stairs or sitting low has become a huge pain. Could it be muscle loss and now too much weight is bearing down? I’m just at a lost. Anybody else experiencing this??

CAN'T STOP LOSING WEIGHT??
MaybeMeow replied to New&Improved's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Again, this is a dream. I'm 32 days post op and stalled at a 17 pound weight loss. Been 200 pounds for 10 days. My surgeon did a "short bypass". Only 100 cm. Because I only had 65 pounds to lose and I didn't want to dump or malabsorb. I hope I will still lose the 65 pounds. I'd love to be saying what you two are in a year. Wishing you continued success! -
Hello there guys. Hope all is well. Well most of you know my story. Started my weight loss journey 10.5 months ago. Had surgery 8.5 months ago. Been in maintenance now 2.5 months. My high weight when I met the surgeon was recorded at 322LBS and I have lost weight really well and consistently the whole time, averaging about 20lbs a month 😁 i got down to 165lbs and have been stable and maintaining that weight for the past 2.5 months, I still check my weight often to make sure I'm not going up and this morning my weight has gone down again.... i don't understand. Like I'm not even trying to lose anymore weight I'm already below goal weight and feeling amazing. In maintenance I've been eating more calories and adding in different foods and some carbs and to be honest I've had a few treats here and there; I honestly believe the bypass has completely changed my metabolism and how my body processes calories 😁 I'm not counting calories as much and enjoying my new life. I'm just wanting people to see it is possible to be successful. Today weigh in - 162.8. that's 159.2lbs lost and that is amazing literally HALF MY BODY WEIGHT GONE......

Congrats and best to you. My visit was Monday for May 17 surgery. I agree there is a lot to take in, and the part about open procedure option made me nervous. I am having a revision an had open last time and did not want to go that route again, but with my past WLS problems, what ever it takes. I felt much better talking to surgeon and PA that they have done many of these revisions, and only with excessive bleeding (3% of time) do they have to go open. -

I also have tricare prime I just basically said id like to have bariatric surgery for my health and quality of life, I said I was ready to commit to it and understood the decision I was making. I honestly didnt have any issues when I went on base, I just said I want to have bariatric surgery for the reasons I just stated and the doc was like ok lets get things started. Im not saying your doc may be that easy but I couldnt see why they wouldn't put a referral in at your request to better your health. If you have any questions plz ask me ill try and help. I have had lap band surgery already here in Oklahoma on friday I have a revision to also have the plication done... I guess it would be no better of a time for me to write out my journey on here to help others like yourself who have tricare! -

New to these parts but looking forward to being involved

Welcome Jesse! Congratulations on a great decision. Similar thoughts as bigdirk: I didn't like the foreign object of lapband and bypass / malabsorption seemed too extreme and went with the sleeve. I was also selfpay and went to Mx. I had a few people that were concerned with my decision to go to Mx but their fears were unfounded. There are several surgeons there that are amazing and have more experience with the sleeve. Do your research and make the best decision for you. As far as Arts comment ... Go Hokies! -
There were 2 with lapband: The 13 year old The young man (MAC) 2 with gastic bypass Calli one with addiction transfer 1 with natural weight loss

Wow. I wish I had seen this. I have such mixed feelings on the issue. I have a daugther who is almost 15. She is 5'8" and about 230 lbs. My heart aches for her all the time. I try and try and try to help her with healthy eating. Unfortunately, she is only with me half of the time and seems to totally overeat when I am not around or not watching. She will do good for a week or so and then not see any results that are easily recognizable and say the heck with it, it's too hard. I would do anything for her, including surgery to help her lose the weight. However, I think that at only 15 she is not ready. She proves that over and over by giving up after about a week of healthy eating. She makes every excuse in the book why she ate this or that. She totally has it in her mind that she can not lose weight. Her father and I (we are no longer together) have discouraged her even more with the fact that I had lap band surgery and he had gastric bypass about 3 years ago. She now thinks that surgery is the only way out. Being an overweight teenager is SO hard. I know this from experience. I wish I had never fed her anything but fruits and vegetables! haha

Ok thank u im doing gastric bypass -
Two of the teens had the band, the dark haired girl went to Dr. Ortiz in Mexico and the young black teen went to Illinois. I felt Oprah's feeling towards WLS surgery came through as pretty obviously negative as did Dr. Oz. I thought the kids and the parents of the two teens who had been banded did well in their explanation. I would have hoped they could have explained more how their eating habits had changed. I'm sure it would have been a real eye opener on how the band really works. I also thought they should have explained how it is reversible, unlike gastric bypass. They did mention it, but they sort of made it sound like it wasn't really an option.

Hello, I guess this is my introduction to the forum, please point me in the right way if I'm in the wrong place. I'm a 46 Y/O guy, about to go in for a revision to my RNY that was done a while back (exact date when I remember...) My new date is this coming Tuesday, May 30th, 2017. My first surgery was somewhat successful, but I guess I got tired of the restrictions and requirements after a while, and I started cheating more and more in my diet. I dropped down to around 300 lbs after starting at 618, my heaviest. A few years ago I had an accident, where I was left in a lot of pain, and since I didn't have insurance I left it go untreated, and that was the beginning of my weight gain, to where I'm now, 504 lbs as of last Monday. Well, here I am, not as excited as the first time, and not scared either, more of a feeling of "whatever". Now, don't get me wrong, I will make it work, it's not as fun being fat and 46, like it was being fat and 30. Anyway, I'm an open book, ask away if you have any Q's, and I'm looking fwd to learning from ya'lls successes and mistakes, especially now that I found a forum dedicated to guy's issues, because my first time around, it was mostly ladies, with very few guys, and most of those guys were young. Best Regards.

Sorry to hear that. My band wasn't put in last March as well. Mine wasn't do to hernia though. They told me I had to lose more weight, but I'm still in the running for a band. The bypass isn't a bad choice especially if they are concerned about slippage. The dieting and so forth is basically the same. There are some differences as you know and those differences are probably what made you choose the band. But in the end, you'll get the same results. I dunno, my gut reaction is to get a second opinion. Also, I wonder if after healing from the hernia issue if it will even be an issue. Also, maybe you can see if they have the other bands available? There's more than one on the market, so maybe one of those would be better suited to you? It's hard though to go in for the band and not come out with it. I totally, totally know how you feel. *gentle smile*
