    The journey begins.....

I have been over weight my entire adult life. I am 24 and feel like i am older than that lol. About 4 years ago i had a knee surgery that would lead to my weight gain and ultimatly to the lowest self esteem of my life. I struggle day to day with my body image and i hate being the Fat girl that has a "great" personality. I want to feel better and to look better. I have a wonderful friend that is a godnsend in my life. She is my best friend and sister. Next Saturday we are going to duluth to go to a seminar on weight loss surgery. We are looking at both getting the lap band. I am both excited and nervous. Part of me feels crappy that i have to have this surgery to loose weight but part of me is ready to change. I am waiting on insurance but i should have no problem with getting aproved by my insurance. I also have had the recomendation to have this surgery done. I will be posting on here about my personal journey through weight loss hell and too the ideal that i will be. I cant wait to begin my journey! Im jsut glad i am not doing it alone!

    Never Worked

All my adult life till 40 I weighed 98lbs. At 5'4" My ideal weight was 125. I was banded in 2005 at 250lbs. I tried to tell the Dr.'s I didn't over eat, and they told me the band was the way to go, and I knew I didn't want to give up the foods I loved, just the ability to eat less again. Right after surgery I was in alot of pain, Dr. couldn't understand why and kept me overnight. About 8pm my port flip'd and the pain went away. For at least 4 months I tried to convince the Dr. it wasn't working and finally he revised the port. I went on for months and had fill after fill and nothing. We filled with food, without, sideways, laying down, standing up... In 2009 just as my weight came on, so did it leave. I still do not over eat, have to remind myself to eat, just like when I was 98lbs. Although there is no sense of fullness, I do have bouts of pain when I eat certain foods. It dosn't matter how much I chew. I am now under 195/lbs, and since I am now 60, my skin does not retract, and does nothing but hang. I am in a size 12 pants and x-lg top. I choose now, to not loose more weight. Don't get me wrong, I still believe in the band and I encourage everyone I talk to and tell them not to use me as an example. Am I the only person who feels I should not have to pay to have it removed? It never worked, and the pain is always there when I eat. Am I the only one who has this experience?
  5. I was reading some of the challenges and some wondering if their goals were realistic. For me I know I can loose 40 lbs in 8 weeks because 1. I am only 7 days post op as of today 2. I am heavier than many ladies here 3. The more you weigh you tend to loose more faster 4. I am competitive lol Now if I were 2-6 months post op I would not have such an ambitious goal. I long for the day to be in Onederland which I haven't seen since college in 1993 when I lived in Bally's Total Fitness. I saw 176. My goal to reach in 2 years is 150 somewhere I have never seen before. Good luck folks!
  6. Weirdest thing ever and I never had it pre surgery. .but one side of my face keeps getting flush and hot. My skin doesn't turn red...my color is fine but the left side of my face is just so hot

feeling good but stall out a lot.

I meant to write more. The attached picture is from the end of Sept at 290 pounds. The pic on the right is me beginning of Feb at 225 pounds and now I'm 216. It feels great but I get stuck so much. I have a lot of skin already too which depresses me. What do you guys do when you get in stalls?

    Mentor Needed

Hi Alan! Thank you so much for replying! Man, it feels so good reading these posts and talking to ppl who are going through what I am going through. Didn't have a great day today. Just a lot of anxiety. Today is my first full day at home. Thank goodness my mom and her husband are here to help me as I am a single parent of a toddler. That's where most of my nerves comes from. She loves to head butt and elbow. I am lucky though as I don't have to go back to work until the 18th. I've just been so concerned because I have been hungry and under my dr's instructions I can be on a soft diet but that seems too much for me right now. My stomach doesn't really tolerate too much yet. I've been thinking about going back to just fluids with my protein drinks. Concerned about loosing my hair! Thanks so much for listening and sorry for the book! .
  9. I just had my first fill this morning. My surgery was on 1/3/06. Before the fill, I could eat almost anything without any problem. On the way home from the doctor, I got a hamburger. I threw up part of it. I was very hungry and ate the first few bites without chewing very well. I then got the rest down slowly. This afternoon, I tried to eat a sliced, skinned apple....threw it up too. Is this normal? Does it ease up after a few days? Could I possibly have enough restriction with only one fill? Has anyone gotten enough restriction with just one fill? Please help...

    Need Reassurance

I'm about 4 weeks out as well (banded 3/19). I think that 15 pounds in 4 weeks is still good. I'm about the same. It still comes to about a 1/2 pound very day. We are still healing and aren't able to fully exercise to the best of our ability. I have sceduled my first fill for the 26th and I hope to see the scale move a little quicker but if it doesn't thats ok too. aslong as I am loosing a couple pounds a week I'm good. we will get there. Plus I have heard that if you don't weigh as much, the weight is slower to come off.
  12. I don't know your stats, but maybe your belly is mostly skin? As far as motivation, how about this: If you keep going in the same direction, you will eventually get to your destination. What destination do you want?

    confused

Don't worry after the 3 week stall you will start to loose fast again. The stalls are just part of the process, you get worried you are doing some thing wrong or the surgery stopped working. The stalls are the way your body looses weight, you are putting your body through a big change.

4 weeks out and feeling defeated

My surgery was the day after yours, but don't get down on yourself. As of today, I've only lost a total of 16lbs also. That's total! I hitter a stall after wk 1 n didn't loose anything else til last week n lost a lb then another here n there. I'm still not getting in all my water either, but I didn't notice the weight change until I upped my protein. So it's worth a try.

    confused

In two days I hit my three week mark, and I've noticed a stall also. I've gotten so used to dropping weight so fast (46 lbs so far) I got bummed but then realized I've hit the phase where it's going to drop less now I've already lost all the water weight. Just be patient and don't loose the good habits you've gained ????
  16. Hello everyone, I am looking for as much guidance as possible. I am very excited for this VSG surgery (September 9). I am feeling a little uneasy for many reasons. One, I am doing this alone. I am getting it done in Mexico, where my mother had hers done. I have only heard exceptional things about all aspects of the journey there. The staff, doctors, drivers, the stay itself etc. I am 23 years old and am still kind of a baby when it comes to going out into the unknown, so far from home (Oregon). I have a million questions, even after doing a bunch of research. I suppose I will list some and see where this goes. 1. I am a smoker, and as much as I would like to not be, it is hard to quit. My surgery is coming up soon and I am quitting cold turkey. Any ideas to keep away from that post-op? I also do think once the surgery is done, my outlook on cigarettes will change dramatically because I feel this is a total reboot, but who knows. 2. How soon after surgery can I start working out? I have been planning on some cardio and strength training... I do not want to go too hard, too soon, but have heard even after two weeks of surgery one can go back to a normal workout routine. (I am signed up for a walking class in the fall, because I didn't want to go too hard post op) 3. Loose skin: should this be a worry of mine? 200-205 lbs currently, 23 years old. How can I really minimize that? 4.Best Protein shake suppliments? What to mix with to lessen the nasty taste? 5. I am a big baby and get overly nervous for a surgery. Although I know every individual is different, what can I expect post-op the day of my surgery, and day after. Pain scales, nausea? I am sure I will be posting more questions on this, thank you for your time guys, it means so much! Mariah

My story with the Lap band

gosh, you must of been in such pain. But the main thing is you are safe and well now. Did you find it easier to loose weight with the band or bypass? x

    Skin feel crawly?

I used extra lotion when my skin bothered me. Not so much "crawly" as itchy.
  19. Well I am 10 months post Sleeve and just came back from a 2 week vacation to see 5 of my grandchildren. I was worried about the 15 hour flight (they live in Korea), eating strange foods and the challenge of bringing Protein to make sure I keep on tract. I knew I wouldn't be able to stay on my weight loss diet (2 shakes, small meal and 1 snack) but I was able to work around the meals the family were eating. I brought individual packets of Protein powder shakes and stuck with a shake for Breakfast each day. I learned several things on this trip. Rice can get stuck just as easy as bread (every meal in Korea has rice). I cannot let myself get caught up in the moment when eating (I over eat when the food is so good and the company engaging). Walking is the main way to get around and I was able to get in 8-10k steps a day (which is why I believe I kept my weight stable) Now I just have to get in the habit to walk more every day. Well, now I am home and it is time to get back to loosing the last 30 lbs to hit my goal.
  20. My surgery is on April 4th and I am now in my 6th week of pre surgery Optifast ... And I feel really alone sometimes ... People don't understand , my husband has been great and is really supportive but I think I have talked his ear off about the topic haha at work the girls are great about it but they really don't understand I mean they don't even need to loose 3lbs and they complain ... I know that everyone has their own battles so I try not to judge but I feel like screaming for f****s sake you have no idea what's it's like so get over yourself !!! I enjoy reading others posts and stories on here makes me realise I am not alone in what I am going thru .. So all that being said please feel free to chat or pm me or whatever if you want to talk
  21. Ok so I'm down 36lbs and six weeks out so I figure now's as good of a time as any to start exercising/weight lifting. I'm horribly out of shape though (as I'm sure a lot of us here are). I'm looking for tips from those of you who hadn't been an overweight but in great shape person prior to surgery (if that makes sense - you know a big guy that's even bigger b/c he lift a ton of weights and works out). Someone recommended insanity, but I think I'll fall out from a heart attack lol the name alone scares me. I'm going to the gym tonight for the first time in a while to start on cardio and some weights... for motivation I've already signed up and paid for a "Run for your Lives" Zombie 5k that's coming here in June (You should seriously check it out - the youtube videos are insane). I've never run except to chase an ice cream truck as a kid so this should be interesting. I have the C25K app but I can't even handle the day one routine of jog 90 sec, walk 60, for 30 mins... So.. tips... How should I start this process? I DO have a bad knee... but everything else is fine. I need to build up endurance for the run and strength/muscle too for some of the obstacles (and to tighten up/prevent loose skin in the process). Would love to hear what you guys/girls did!

    Water and Calories Question

I should probably invest in a nutritionist. I knew eating too little can stop the weightloss - I didn't loose but 2lbs when I was on my liquid diet and the Dr. said it was from too few calories, but I was eating like 300 - 600 a day. I thought 1000 would be plenty. (makes me kinda happy to think it may not be!) I really need to get my butt in gear and start exercising. My Best Friend just had a baby and we are going to do the trial to Curves together, but, uhm, she just had a baby and it is SO hard for her to find the time, I guess I should just jump in there by myself! Thanks for your advice!
  23. Hey guys, I have upped my Water consumption to 10 glasses a day. I started 2 days ago and I have gained 5lbs. Now, I assume, hope, pray, that this is just the extra water and it will slowly go away, taking lots of extra fat with it. I know I need a fill, but I am still counting/logging EVERYTHING that goes in my mouth into DailyPlate. I am keeping around 1000 - 1100 calories a day. Pre-band, I was consuming 3500+ a day. Now, with that being said, I have not started exercising (bonking myself on the forehead), but I feel that I should be loosing more. Hell, every diet I have been on has been more successful than this! -note to self, short term success, remember that- I had lost 15lbs (since 2/19), now it is only 10. The odd thing, I feel that I am eating super healthy, my calories are maintaining well. Ugh!

Long way out, but skin question

Thanks guys. Yeah, I've lost some weight in the past, but nothing like I expect with this surgery, so it's something on my mind. I've been overweight my whole life, so I know and expect some skin to be there after, but I'm hoping with excersize after, it will help. And skin care, of course. My first and most important goal is to better my health by losing the weight, but I can't help but to think of some of these things that will happen because of the fast weight loss. My insurance might cover panus, with skin issues/rashes, I think, but it has to be paired with other problems. Although, I probably will be changing insurance next year, so that might change.
  25. Yes I do. I massage my belly with Sensura Massage Oil made with Calendula, which has healing and relaxation properties for scars, bruises, stretch marks & dry skin (it gets down into the muscles.) The stuff is amazing considering how great my belly looks after 5 surgeries.
