  1. In case this helps, I'll show you what one of my typical days looks like at 4 months post-op. Keep in mind I have had the DS so I eat more. My personal macro goal is 120-150 grams of protein a day, under 50 total carbs, and 100 grams of fat. Also, I can't tolerate any raw fruit at the moment. And calories are not relevant for DS patients because we malabsorb most fat and a good chunk of our protein... 8 am: Premier Protein Cafe Latte Shake 9 am: Ratio Keto Vanilla Yogurt with 2 tablespoons of toasted coconut chips, 1 tablespoon of keto nut granola, and 1 tablespoon freeze dried strawberries 12 noon: 1/4 cup roasted Spaghetti Squash, 1/4 cup of ricotta cheese, 1/4 cup of a beef bolognese sauce 2 pm: Cafe Macchiato with espresso and 4 oz Fairlife Protein Milk 3 pm: 2 mozzarella cheese sticks, 2 mini baby cucumbers and 4 cherry tomatoes 6 pm: Roasted chicken leg and thigh quarter, 1/3 cup of vegetable soup 9 pm: Homemade Keto Banana Walnut Dark Chocolate Muffin Total Macros: 150 grams of protein (yay!!), 43 grams total carbs, 97 grams of fat, 1634 calories.

    Keto Diet

Years before I had VSG, I tried the keto diet. Gained 7 lbs. in one week, so I went off it. I am almost 2 years post-op and do not use the word “diet” for myself, as diets have always failed me. I eat intuitively and so far, it seems to be working for me.

    Food Aversions After Surgery

Oh yeah Isopure is a good brand i forgot about! I used it when I did Keto. Did your surgery team give you all this good advice or you learned on your own? I'm learning more from you guys and my book than them lol. So Mashed Potatoes is allowed in the pureed stage?? That will be a lifesaver. Glad to hear the shake worked out!

Dr. Atkins, pioneer of the ketogenic diet

I didn't say he died of a heart attack. I said he had a heart attack that damaged his heart. The attack was caused by endocarditis. He died from slipping on ice and had a blood clot. People in comas often suffer edema build up. Their skin weeps. I've seen it and dealt with patients with this problem. It was NOT unusual for them to gain more than >50lbs. No, she didn't want unscrupulous people attacking his life work. There are so many supportive research and so many doctors who continue this work. You know nothing about what you are accusing. You do not have the facts. Dr. Stephen Finney Dr. Jeff Volek Dr. Mike Eades Dr. Eric Westman Dr. Tim Noakes Dr. Dominic D'Agostino Dr. Richard Feinman Dr. William Davis Dr. Perlmutter https://www.mensjournal.com/food-drink/truth-behind-worlds-most-cutting-edge-fat-burning-performance-meal-plan-keto/ http://bjsm.bmj.com/content/early/2017/03/31/bjsports-2016-097285 I could list other sources for the fail of fat causing heart disease, this is just the first one that came up. But there are MANY more! These are all medical physicians who've authored countless papers and studies in peer reviewed journals--respected physicians who all have helped prove that ketogenic diets ARE beneficial when done correctly. The fat/cholesterol hypothesis of heart disease was disproved not too long ago.

What did you tell people at work?

I’m at a new job so no one knew me before surgery. But ppl who did know me before I say I’m doing keto, which I really am

What did you tell people at work?

I tell people that I had hiatal hernia surgery - which is true, I had it with the sleeve. The restricted eating is the same for that surgery as WLS. If people ask about my weight lost specifically, I tell them I eat less and am doing Keto and exercise which I didn't do at all before I started this journey. All of these responses are accurate! I am not comfortable telling everyone at work because the gossip factory is just too active here and I don't want people judging/talking about me. My lunch buddy and my boss know and that is it.
  8. I'm doing Keto too and it is working for me! I lost weight regularly for the first year after being banded, then everything slowed waaaay down. I lost 12 pounds in the last year, and gained 5 back! I was walking more days than not and nothing was changing. It took me a long time to figure out that in that first year when I was FOLLOWING ALL THE BAND RULES, I had cut out bread and Pasta because they didn't go down well, and I also didn't eat many potatoes or sugary Snacks. I eventually started eating a little of this. trying a little of that, and was back to a diet of basically everything. My portions were getting bigger and I was taking bites like a normal person. I was doing lots of things wrong. And the weight loss stopped! Duh. I cut out added sugars on July 28, and then went full keto a few weeks later, and went from 195 to 179. I have a LOT of energy too. I would recommend reading the faq at this website to anyone who is interested http://www.reddit.com/r/keto.

    6 months 101 lbs down w/pics

Yes my taste buds have changed. I’m part Italian so bread and pasta used to be a staple for me. I have no desire for bread and little for pasta. Except I did have Gnocchi at Christmas time. Lol. I love fish so that’s a plus with trying to do keto. Once I reach my goal I will reintroduce carbs and treat myself. Everything in moderation.

    6 months 101 lbs down w/pics

I've noticed that the post-post-op diet (that's how I think about the way after LOL) is like a keto or whole30 diet. Which is great. I followed whole30 for about 60 days a few years ago and found it very helpful. Did you notice that your tastebuds changed after surgery? Many of the people that I have talked with post-op (my mom, friends, co-workers) have said that as time has gone on they find themselves craving different things like shrimp, crab, various other proteins, instead of sugars and carbs.
  11. ** I HAVE NOT BEEN SLEEVED YET ** I am just researching different types of Protein shakes for post-op. I was on a ketogenic diet which did wonders for me. I relied on Keto Chow as a meal substitute, and I can honestly report that nearly every flavor I tried was delicious. Just like melted milk shakes but the net carbs were under 4 grams per serving. I still have two weeks worth of supply (they are a bit pricey--about $10 a day). Each shake has about 27 grams of protein and is about 400 calories per shake. The only downside I see is that you have to MCT Oil and heavy cream to make it nutritional rounded: that is to say, consuming three shakes met all of your nutritional needs per day. I am not sure if the heavy cream (which adds fat--key to keto) would be a bad thing post-op. Here's the nutritional label for the shakes: (hopefully linking is allowed) https://www.thebairs.net/2015/03/label-all-the-things/ Are these good to go?

    Keto post op diet

I'm a certified keto coach and after bari surgery, the rules are a bit different. You need protein to be your focus so may be eating more often than we recommend for the average Joe and you do NOT want your diet to be 75% fat, you want minimal fat, at a later date you may be able to increase the fat a bit as your carbs are below 20g/day to be properly keto so you need energy from somewhere. In the early days post op you just want to focus on your protein and fluids, which will put you into ketosis anyway. Loads of different ways to do keto, there is dirty keto, lazy keto, strict keto, so while you are recovering and on low carbs anyway research lots and find a way to do it that will fit in with your lifestyle.

  15. Hello, welcome to the Bari world! You will learn very quickly that everyone has their opinion about foods/shakes. Not only how something taste but also their opinion on it's value to your diet. (Is it healthy? Should you eat it? Don''t eat carbs.. do eat carbs.. etc.) I always say, follow YOUR teams/Dieticians plan! Period. You trusted them with your life (literally) so you should trust them in your recovery and your WL process. Every team is different, different rules, different guidelines, everything. I tried a bunch of different "alternative" foods. Some are ok, most I didn't prefer. I find it easy to hit my protein goals, so I don't need to make sure EVERY single item of food has protein. I still drink shakes every day for breakfast but that is mainly because I am not a morning person and don't like to eat in the mornings. Otherwise most of my nutrition is from whole foods. My point is, if I feel like I really want "need" some chips, I just eat a few regular ones. I eat regular cereal (usually raisin bran) with fairlife milk. With that being said I reiterate ALL PLANS ARE DIFFERENT. I am "allowed" anything in moderation as long as I am hitting my protein/fluid/ WL goals. My Dietician says "you shouldn't feel like you are on a diet for the rest of your life, you should modify your eating habits to gain a healthy life and learn moderation". Now, to actually answer your questions. My opinions: Quest chips: They are ok, the taste is good but the texture is a little weird to me. They feel powdery to me and do not hold up to any type of dipping or even to use as nachos. Protein cereal: I have not specifically tried the magic spoon brand but have tried a few others. I hated them ALL. haha Literally hated them, brought them to work and threw them on the "sharing" table in the lunch room and it all sat there till i threw it away. I have tried premier brand, they are SO HARD and taste like stale rocks. I ate 2 bites and tried to flush the rest down the toilet and they wouldn't even flush! haha I also tried the brand "wonderworks keto" and felt just about the same way although they were better than the premier. They were ok to eat dry as a snack but disgusting with milk. To each their own, you may find like some other people that you love them. I have also tried Quest protein pizza, it was actually good but not a big enough deal to me for the price. I will jsut eat regular pizza. Usually a few bites and then just the toppings. Or, make home made pizza on low carb/calorie wraps. I don't know what else I have tried other than probably hundreds of protein bars, which I still randomly try and eat once in a while. Usually more of a meal replacement in a pinch than a snack. Ok- I have rambled long enough! best of luck on your journey!!

High protein, low carb for life?

Low carbing as a lifestyle and not a diet is different. As some other people said, eating Protein first makes you a low carber by default even if you add in carbs at the end, you will get so few you are still low carb. I love low carbing, more specifically Iove eating Keto. I had issues with portion control before surgery so I would fail or stop losing. Now with the restriction, it is easy to stick to. Eating after surgery even though are tracking everything and some thing you don't eat, is not like dieting. It is a completely different thing, and I don't think you can understand the difference until after surgery. Your body and your desires are just different.

    KETO? After surgery

You have to eat A LOT of fat to be on a true Keto diet and get into ketosis. It's doable but I prefer to focus on a high protein/ low sugar diet, I think its more sustainable long term.

Keto vs paleo??? Have you ever tried it?

So question for all of you: what are your macros? Regardless of whether you're doing a modified paleo, keto or whole30. How many calories do you eat on average? Proteins etc? I did a keto calculator online but obviously that's geared towards someone with a regualr sized stomach, so i was just curious.@williamrjomes2@clementine sky
  19. As noted, some programs do low carb as a pre-op diet to improve liver condition prior to surgery. Low carb can help you lose a bit quicker initially as it promotes some additional water weight loss, so if you are trying to game the system to make a certain weight by a certain time, it's a good way to do that. But, as Fallingfast has found, since it's mostly water weight, it comes back as soon as you stop. And, if you are doing true keto as in high fat, low carb, moderate protein, it's not so good as a long term weight loss diet owing to its high caloric density. Indeed, the clinical use for such high fat, low carb diets is to avoid or minimize weight loss after a non-WLS stomach surgery.

    Keto diet before surgery

So most preop diets are there for 2 reasons... to see if you will comply after surgery and to shrink your liver. Doing Keto high fat, low carb isn't going to shrink your liver. I can lose like crazy in Keto but it always comes back as soon as I am out of Keto. You can reach Keto without the high fat when you do liquids.

    Meal planning

I'm a foodie, trying to be a reformed foodie! I used to keep a low carb keto food blog and even with low carb eating, I wanted to still be able to immerse myself in food and meals and eating. Damn! I spent a crap ton of time thinking about food, shopping, preparing, then talking about it! Then a light bulb went off for me! Now I seek to MINIMIZE the amount of time I have to think about food, shop for it, prepare it, etc. I'm happy eating the same 2-4 things for breakfast and lunch, day in and day out. I do still appreciate variety for dinner, but instead of thinking in terms of "how much" of xy or z I can have for that meal, I think of how "little" I can eat to satisfy my immediate hunger. I also used to want complex, multilayered meals packed with yumminess. Now I want to KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid). I focus on bare naked lean meats/proteins and some low glycemic veggies (maybe a salad too), and only TINY amounts of low glycemic berries and fruits in very limited quantities. It's a total paradigm shift that makes meal planning a piece of cake. I basically use a garanimals system for food ingredients. That way you can mix and match your dinner. I keep our most favorite veggies on hand--some of them prepped. If you don't like chopping things, you can buy bags of frozen chopped onions, peppers, and chopped/sliced frozen veggies that will allow you to pull out a few ounces at a time for each meal. At the beginning of the week I will decide what proteins we will focus on for dinners that week and then will cook them: grilled chicken breasts or George Forman chicken breasts, grilled sirloin or flank steak, venison, ground turkey/onion/spices, turkey or chicken meatloaf muffins, etc. I will usually pick 1 meat, 1 fish/seafood, and 1 ground meat to cook for the week. I also keep some low calorie/low carb/low fat sauces on hand (cuz I stay at a specific caloric level each day, so I've found some low/no sugar prepared sauces that add variety without breaking the bank and with "fairly" innocuous ingredients). By doing it this way, using pre-prepared ingredients I can quickly "customize" a meal on the fly that only takes about 5-10 minutes to prepare. The most I do on any day for dinner is cook a veggie, make a salad or cut up an avocado and tomatoes, and warm up a meat (some days I do a tiny bit of sauce and cheese on it--other days I just keep it simple with plain meat). I feed 2 adults this way. And because of this, my exposure to food and temptation and food thoughts has gone down so much--so has my appetite! I struggle to get in 1000cals per day pre-op per my surgeon. I'm actually now working to get to 1200cals/day pre-op and it's rough! Because I don't eat any junk (the biggest junk I might have is pork rinds with something), and concentrate on very small 3oz portions of cooked lean protein and low glycemic veggies--it takes a LOT of food to get to 1000cals! I wouldn't say the pre-op weight is flying off of me, but I've now lost 50+ lbs since May3 and am having my 2nd appointment with the surgeon on Monday. I will have lost about 19 of the 25 lbs she wants me to lose before surgery in 6 weeks. So planning and prepping works and really helps meet goals. Hope this helps. Sorry for being long-winded!!

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

I am at the three week post op mark. Slowly advancing my diet. No more puréed. Now just soft foods. Thank god for grilled fish which is filling and satisfying. No weight loss in a week which I am fine with because I have reintroduced carbs and I know from the many failed Keto diets that the minute you have carbs again the weight comes back with a vengeance. I am still very full after only a few bites so I can’t eat enough protein so I am still doing a shake a day. I am down to just one of the five incisions that is still healing. The rest have closed up nicely. I am having a weird experience with friends and family. I can only eat a few bites of food and with Christmas approaching I have been going out to dinner and to parties a lot. It is such a waste of money to order a meal given restaurant portion sizes knowing that leftovers don’t qualify as soft food after they are microwaved. So instead I have been asking to split meals. I am surprised by how many people look at me like I am a monster for suggesting this. Does anyone else find that people don’t want to split a meal at a restaurant?
  24. Google can give a better answer, but your brain and body have two primary ways of processing food to energy. One is taking carbs and converting them to energy (you brain prefers this method as it is the easiest to take a carb and convert to energy) or having your body convert your fat into usable brain energy by your liver converting fat into ketones. Thus, your body runs off of your fat reserves instead of your food intake. But your body will only do this when carbs are not a viable option. So people who eat enough carbs to sustain their brain energy won't use their fat as a fuel resource. In lamens terms, you are changing your engine to run off of cooking oil instead of gasoline. By eating a higher fat diet, but low carb and moderate Protein. (Fats have to come from quality sources like coconut oil and avocado, not deep fried chicken and gravy) Atkins is basically a keto diet before they knew the science behind it. Here is a site that provides a lot of info from it- www.dietdoctor.com

    Ketogenic diet

typical keto is low carb and low protein with high fat and that is more outside the most common WLS diet. If you looked up a low carb diet it would match up better with most of the plans given by the different surgeons. It mostly about cutting out the sugar and refined carbs. These tend to be the trigger foods for most of us. Most obese people have damaged metabolisms and sugars and highly refined and process foods play to most damaged parts of our hormonal system. Don't fear the fat but to much of anything can work against you. always remember there are essential amino acids from protein and essential fatty acids from fat that you can not survive without But there is no essential Carb. They just make you feel like you cant live without them and that is the very sign that you need fewer of them. good luck
