Hunger coming back

I think a lot of it is the drinking munchies for me. I really need to cut back on that. I’m also training for a triathlon so even though I ate 2000 calories yesterday, I burned that much due to my training.

Hunger coming back

Yes, very normal. I started getting my appetite back after 6 or 7 months, I don't really remember the exact time frame but it got increasingly difficult to maintain a low calorie diet. After that point, I had to increase my fruits and vegetables almost to the point of ridiculousness lol as well as other ways to stay on track. I still track and weigh everything. I never stopped. I always will but that is only because I can NOT trust myself to eat mindfully. Others can but I can not. We will always have our tool to keep us in check to some extent but for myself, I have to continue to follow the basic rules to stay successful. I don't ever want to go back to what I was back in 2008. AsArabesque said above that sometimes we have to really examine whether it is real or head hunger and what emotion is driving us at that given time if we are experiencing head hunger. I am glad she reminded me of that.

Hunger coming back

The hunger urges do come back any where from around 6 to 12 months +/-. As @SkinnyMingo1408 said the surgery is a tool & you can’t rely on the the temporary benefits like reduction of hunger & appetite which don’t last. The honeymoon period is an opportunity to establish new eating habits, introduce new more nutritious foods & cooking methods, reflect on what drives you to eat, etc. Is what you feel real hunger or head hunger? Is there a reason you’re hungry (late for a meal, ate a small portion at a previous meal, missed a meal, been very active)? Are you wanting to eat a specific food, texture or flavour? (This is head hunger not real hunger.) If you are eating regularly, are eating nutrient dense food in recommended portion sizes you shouldn’t be feeling so much hunger you have trouble controlling the urge & are driven to eat. Do you still measure & track everything you eat? Have a chat with your dietician to review your food choices, portion sizes & calorie intake to ensure you on track. Maybe finding a therapist will help too. Many find therapy very beneficial in understanding their eating habits, what drives them to eat & the reason behind them. The head work really is the hardest part of weight loss.

Chronic pain, WLS, and exercise

I didn’t exercise in the traditional sense & I lost all my weight & more. I made my everyday tasks more active. Walked up & down escalators, took stairs not lifts, parked further away from where I was going, took the long way round, made multiple trips up & down my stairs even if I could do it in one trip, etc. Now I do some stretches, use resistance bands, some wall pushups & sit ups. Mainly for my back - have oozing discs. Honestly what I do takes about 20 mins max over a three or four separate sessions. Wouldn’t burn 30 calories. 😆. Exercising accounts for only about 10% of the weight you have to lose. So want to lose 100lbs, exercise will only account for about 10lbs. Of course there are many benefits to exercising. There are lots of low impact, gentle exercises designed for various physical limitations available online which you may be able to do without causing a flare up. Give them a go & see how you go.
5. I’m the same height as you and weigh less. The only thing that puts any weight on me are carby snacks that don’t fill me up like queso and chips or crackers and peanut butter. They go down too easily! If you’re concerned, snacks aren’t filling so are easy calories that add up

Scheduled And Insurance Denial

So the 5 year history typically means they want to know how long you've been obese, what comorbidities you have and how long you've had them, what meds you've had to take for them and how long, etc... The supervised diet would be either 6 months working with a dietician or having done things like doctor supervised keto, or Jenny Craig, or Weight Watchers, or a low calorie/low fat diet (again, doctor supervised). If you have done any of these, they want to know the results.
7. 1/2 a coffee shop (sausage & egg & cheese) breakfast sandwich and 1/2 a hashbrown. 299 calories, ate it all.
8. I second @Jeanniebug’s suggestion of seeking help from a therapist. Many find them very helpful in identifying the why behind overeating & head hunger & can help you develop ways to better manage the cause & effects. The suggestions of measuring your food & drinks are a good place to focus. Set a timer on your phone for a couple of minutes so you only take a single bite or single sip at a time. I still ask myself if I need the next bite or do I just want it & find this helpful for really thinking about my eating. Working out what your real hunger cues are will help too. I feel restless. I think something is wrong but don’t know what until I realise it’s hunger. I never crave a specific food, flavour or texture with real hunger. And this is a legitimate reason I am hungry (missed a meal, didn’t eat much at the previous meal, my calorie intake for the day is low,…). Real hunger doesn’t really disappear. You can distract a lot of your head hunger away. To distract yourself, try going for a walk, craft, garden, call a friend, check social media or this forum, clean out a cupboard, read, have a cup of tea or another drink, etc. Try to work out why you want to eat. Are you bored, stressed, angry, sad, hormonal? Are you wanting to eat out of habit - because of a time (lunch time, snack time) or activity (watching tv, socialising).

Then and NOW

Huge congratulations to you - I know you've posted several times recently about your journey and it's inspiring. Please can I ask what you do in your planned weight loss phases now? Do you calorie count, track protein and/or other macros, restrict any food groups, follow any particular route?

When does it get better?

Has your team ever given you IV liquids? If not, maybe ask for those to help get you over the hump in trying to get in more calories. Maybe if that helps your nausea and dehydration, you'd be able to tolerate more calories. I think I am going to go to an infusion center in the next couple of days just to see if it helps me feel better. I know you said that you can't tolerate dairy but wondering if you've tried Fairlife fat free lactose free milk. I just discovered it after a suggestion here. It has really helped me get in more liquid and some protein, to boot. I make a sugar free hot chocolate with it since I tolerate warm much better than cold. Maybe your issue with dairy is the lactose and this milk might be tolerated?
11. Hugs! Perhaps eating a measured amount of food would work better than just eating until you're full..? Take your 1/2 cup of food (or whatever your measurement is) and sit there and slowly eat that. Wait 30 seconds after you've swallowed, before you take the next bite - use a timer. If you feel full before you've finished your measured amount, then stop eating. If you don't feel full after you're done, stop eating. Are you tracking your food? Tracking can help, because you can see where you might be eating some unnecessary calories. Remember, we still have to diet and exercise. The surgery helps us, but it's not the cure. A therapist might also be helpful, if your issues are mental/behavioral.

A lighter version of a regular menu item. I think the high calorie count is from the dressings (which I didn’t eat & the regular version was 3x the calories).

When does it get better?

You need to do as your pcp says and eat. First find things to drink, you sound as if you are dehydrated. Water and milk and thinned protein drinks are safe starting options. Have you tried protein water? Have you tried broth? Find the temperature you can tolerate. I managed hot drinks better than icy cold. You need to eat and the calorie content will not matter for a couple of weeks. Once you get some calories in you will start to feel better. To start you eating again, can I suggest yogurts, high protein tinned or homemade soups [blitz it if you need to] mashed potato and gravy, Custard, instant porridge. and soft baked crustless quiche or cheese souffle. Aim to eat [ or drink your food ] a good amount of foods every 2 or 3 hours. Eat whatever you can, its critical to you getting and feeling better Lack of protein will make you weak. Lack of liquid makes your throat slimy. You feel nausea because you may not be drinking enough. Getting hot or in my case shivery cold is because we have overeaten. Getting the foamies [spitting out foam] is because you have put too much in your new stomach in one go. Eat or drink smaller sips until you get a hang of your limits. Lastly, have you been tested for a stricture? because I had similar problems until about 10 months out because they found my internal stitch line was still swollen. I just had to do the best I could until it settled. You should be getting more help from your team than you are, when did you last speak to them?

Maintain weight

Nobody wants to regain weight. Though sometimes it happens. It could be our body’s set point & therefore our weight settling. The second/third year bounce back regain does happen. Cravings, boredom, emotional issues are always there in our heads driving us to eat especially for us. If your way of eating or exercising is too restrictive & not sustainable. Complacency. Health issues. Medications & just life in general can all contribute to a possible regain. I accepted it might happen. I also decided I’d do everything I could to reduce my chance of it happening though knowing some things would be beyond my control. I made changes & have stuck to them. I still watch what I eat & how much I eat. I randomly check calories & nutritional value. Monitor my fluid & protein intake every day. I prepare & cook most of my food avoiding high processed foods & prepared/ready ingredients or meals. It’s not difficult, restrictive or limiting. It’s just what I do - habits, routines & a sustainable way of eating. And yes, I have treats just not often. I’m 3.75 years out & I had a small but rapid regain (2kgs) at about 2.5 years. Wasn’t happy but accepted it had happened. Then my doctor suggested it & some other symptoms might be because I wasn’t absorbing my HRT meds. Changed to a patch & she was right. The weight is slowly dropping off without me doing anything (& that included over Christmas). This is my opinion, my experience & what works for me & my life. Others will have different experiences & suggestions especially those who are further out than me. All the best.

23 Days After Sleeve

You could try warming most drinks or drinking them at room temp. Will be some trial & error to see which ones you can tolerate. I even used to make my shakes on warm water or microwave them (tried to convince myself the chocolate one was a hot chocolate - still tasted pretty hideous). I also diluted shakes, soups, etc. too to get in extra fluid. Also give an electrolyte drink a go . I’d make up a bottle of hydralyte every day, again doubled the required water, & took with me to work to give me an extra boost of energy during the day. There are quite a few no calorie drinks out there you could try. Ask your dietician for recommendations too.

Working from home after gastric bypass

It took me 2-3 weeks to get to a point where I could sustain an adequate level of thought to muddle through working at home. It was a combination of getting to a point where pain wasn't completely disabling and the ability to consume enough calories consistently to keep my brain working. It was only about a week more before I could manage office attendance. A work acquaintance just had Gastric Bypass a couple months ago and was useless for work for 6 weeks which included a bad period of a couple weeks that had him back in the hospital for a couple days. Part of his problem was trying to work too hard too soon which compounded the other issues. If there's a lesson it's don't push too hard too soon. Good luck, Tek

MyFitness app to track calories and nutrients. See how where and far you are off from daily carbs and fats.
18. How much does your plan recommend? If they didn’t give you portion size recommendations I’d ask ask for some that will meet your needs especially if you feel more comfortable & confident with them. Best advice then is to follow your plan. Remember all because you can doesn’t mean you should. As you know there are differences with plans. Like I was told 1/4 - 1/3 cup from purée slowly increasing to about a cup near goal. I was never given calorie goals. Some are advised a larger portion because they are given a higher caloric goal. (I wasn’t given calorie goals just portion size recommendations.) I’d think everyone is able to eat/drink more soup, shakes & broths because they’re liquids & go through our tummy more quickly. I’d sip on them for hours … until the soup got too chunky.

Noom Weight loss Program

Thanks to everyone for the feedback! I decided to sign up for the fitness pal premium plan instead and just track calories. There seemed to be a lot of hidden fees with Noom and I’ agree doesn’t seem to be worth the cost and the reviews weren’t very impressive….

Food Before and After Photos

Leftover southwest salad, boiled egg and sweet potato medallions (that fell apart). I did not finish this especially the egg which was an afterthought for protein sake. Funny if these were frozen waffles, I would have attempted to eat 2 even though they are more calories. 😐

Noom Weight loss Program

Noom works for a lot of people I guess, but I don't really get the draw. Basically, you pay money to have an app tell you to eat more vegetables and fewer donuts. A slight oversimplification, but basically foods are categorized as "green" - go ahead "yellow" - be cautious "red" - reconsider whether you want to eat the food Examples of green foods: asparagus, broccoli, egg whites Yellow foods: lean meats, beans, whole eggs Red foods: nut butters, pork, donuts Basically a simplified, low-fat volumetric diet. Don't eat calorie dense foods, substitute for less dense foods. Like, I already know to avoid peanut butter at all costs. I don't see why I would want to pay for an app to remind me not to eat ranch dressing, string cheese, and raisins. It's probably not bariatric appropriate either because it's carb agnostic. Whole grains are green, whereas chicken and tuna are caution foods. I suppose you could build your diet around non-starchy vegetables, egg whites, extra-lean seafood, and fat-free dairy. But again, why would you want to pay for an app to tell you to do that? I guess it's great if it helps but I just don't get it.

Before and after of Shipwrecked ice cream (chocolate, caramel and Oreos) it’s a kid size portion but I have no clue about the calories. This is the amount I can handle without fear of ill effects.

Where should I be??

Here's what my Kaiser handbook says you should be in terms of calories, protein & water intake!
24. I had my sleeve on 12/13/2022 and after 30 days I have lost 25 pounds. Where should I be with calories in? Right now I am averaging 400 to 600 calories a day with protein target 61 GMs (I don’t always achieve) fat 33 GMs and carb max 33 grams (which I never achieve). Water intake 32 oz daily. I just can’t eat or drink more. I know I know 25 pounds in 30 days is good but I guess I thought weight loss would be quicker especially at first. HW 255. SW 237. CW 211.6
25. I've lost 38 pounds since surgery - October 18th. You've lost more than I have, but you should lose a little faster than me, because I had less to lose. I'm going to say that you're probably right where you should be. Are you in contact with your team? They should be able to give you some advice on calories and what you should be eating at this stage.
