As long as you get the sleeve instead of gastric bypass, there shouldn't be a problem. My mom got the bypass and because it shortens the intestines, you absorb fewer calories so you tend to lose more weight. With the sleeve, if you feel like you are losing too much weight, all you would have to do is adjust the types of foods you are eating and lean towards higher calorie foods and you would be fine. I have actually never heard of anyone becoming too thin from either surgery unless they develop post-op anorexia. Post op anorexia is super rare because instead of obsessing about food after your surgery, it kind of become in consequential.

I am in the same situation. I have PCOS and hypothyroidism. I weigh 319. My doctors all said bypass would be better for me because of my problems. I too would also like to hear from women who had bypass who have the same problems. CW: 319 SD:May 2017 GW: 128

Hello everyone, I had my surgery 15 days ago and the healing process has been going well until I’ve started having these episodes of heartburn about 4 days ago. On Monday of week 2 (this past Monday), my doctor said I could eat soft proteins. I tried a few times through the week and they upset my stomach each time so I went back to full liquids on Thursday. Since then, I’ve been experiencing heartburn daily which only goes away for a few hours when I take a Pepcid tablet. I was also taking my multivitamin and calcium supplements in solid pill form while I wait for my dissolvable tablets to come in the mail. I asked if it was safe since they are somewhat large pills and my doctor said they were. However, I’m not planning on taking them tomorrow so I can try to figure out what is causing this heartburn. I spoke to a nurse (who I’d never spoken to before) at my doctor’s office who said heartburn is normal because I am still early in the healing process and to just keep taking my Pepcid. I am worried that she may have just wanted to get me off the phone and I’ll be calling again next week to reach someone who actually knows me. Sorry to be so long-winded. Has anyone else experienced heartburn this soon after gastric bypass and did it ever go away? I’m scared I’ll have to take antacids permanently. I haven’t had any nausea or vomiting on full liquids and when I did try the soft proteins, they went down fine, I just didn’t feel too well after which is why I went back to liquids. These bouts of heartburn are my only issue at the moment. ANY and all insight is appreciated!

Just filled out my paperwork!

Best of luck. Are you having surgery near home? You need lots of support and visit the nutritional psychologist, the dietician, the nutritionist, and the counselor who manages your case. I had great support at Northwestern University's Hospital-Northwestern Memorial. The nutritional classes were invaluable support. Four classes before, three after. I felt well prepared. My cousin's husband lost 275# with bypass surgery, but sugary sodas and peroggies are not helpful. He is still close to 400! And he needs a new heart-which he'll never get because of that weight! Stay close to your recommendations for your diet. Plan to look back in stages. Try taking portraits every 2or 3 months. You'll be so amazed my husband is tired of me saying, 'I can't believe it!' He says to just believe and enjoy! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
8 lbs! Wow. 3 previous cruises I didn't gain a lb. This is the first one with no fill in my band (slipped last month, waiting till late June for a sleeve revision). I ate with no abandon. eggs Benedict and corn beef hash for Breakfast, the buffet for lunch, a lavish dinner - and has anyone had Carnival Cruise Lines warm chocolate melting cake? It's to die for. I ate it EVERY SINGLE NIGHT. Then at about 11 pm, I'd order another dessert from room service- just because I could. Didn't go to the gym even once. Walked alot in ports, but obviously not enough. So it's official. I've now gained 30 lbs since getting married Dec 2011. It just crept up on me. About 1/2 of my closet doesn't fit anymore. I was down to an 8 and now I'm wearing about an 11/12. Hubby keeps telling me I should cut my carbs (he's a carb-a-phobe), but I feel like "hey, I'm having the sleeve done next month. Why not eat whatever I want?" I'm going to the dr on Monday to get my surgery date. I'm so embarrassed at my weight gain. And to top it off, we lost our camera on the last day of our cruise. All 500 pics of our week is gone. All those memories. No one turned it to lost and found. At least we have the memories to keep in our heads. What would you do if you were having the sleeve done next month? Try to lose weight or say to heack with it? I know what I'm going to hear "If you're not ready to change your diet then you're not ready for the sleeve". I AM ready. My band failed after 3 1/2 yrs (totally my fault, frequent vomiting) and I NEED something to help me take off the rest and maintain forever. It's why I got the band in the first place. I hate dieting. Marci

Our surgery was on May 19th! Everything went well. We arrived at the hospital at 6 am, my husband's surgery was scheduled for 7:30 and mine for 8:30 am. Both surgeries went well, both of us also had a hernia fixed that they found during surgery. Dr. Richard had requested that we stay over night due to the fact that we live 2 1/2 hours away. I was worried about the post op pain, we did receive some pain reliever in our IV but neither one of us felt the need to use our morphine pump. We stayed over night and visited each other during the day. We went home around 9 am on Wednesday. We were tired when we got home but am doing great. My husband went back to work today and I am going back tomorrow. I do feel so full but am trying to get down my protien drink. We go back to see Dr. Richard next Wednesday. I was so impressed with Dr. Richard and the hospital. The hospital is Northeast Medical Center in Gainesville, Ga. Everything was wonderful!!! It is so exciting that we are finally post op! I have been checking on bypass/banding for so many years and finally we are here!!

Quite a bit has happened since my last post and I have been mentally exhausted making it difficult to think about anything but how much my job is stressing me out. Enough about that... Well last Sunday I talked to my husband about the surgery. I told him I was having the surgery and would like his support. He told me no and I shrugged advising him it would not change my mind. I proceeded to tell him how this was something I had to do for myself and how it was unlike the gastric bypass my coworker had (he thinks she looks horrible) and he pretty told me I couldnt sell him on it. I told him I wasnt trying to and explained how it would give me a better quality of life. Blah Blah Blah Blah. Once Mr. Wilson makes up his mind about something, there is no changing it. He has to come around on his own after he SEES himself disproved. I know this about my husband. He has always been this way which is why I told him it would be nice to have his support, but my mind is made up. He even told me to let him know when I was going to do it so he could have "the papers" (meaning divorce) for me to sign. I totally ignored him, knowing it was the only "weapon" he thought he could use. But I didnt care and figured it became truly THAT serious for him, then I will cross that bridge when I get to it. Besides I know my husband and despite what he may see as "defiance" he loves me and will not refuse to help me when the time comes. For a moment I could see him pondering more over my stance than my words. He seemed to want to get angry, but he couldnt because I had a calm but determined attitude. As the hours and days passed since our conversation last Sunday afternoon I noticed something different about Mr. Wilson. It was as if a lightbulb went off in his head and he began to show me affection in ways that were very touching. Light kisses as I slept. Smiles and compliments were more frequent and I began to wonder...Did Mr. Wilson have a sudden epiphany of sorts remembering how I looked when we first me 8 years and 30+ lbs ago? Did he began to imagine the image I have been seeing in my dreams for years of myself as a stronger, healthier, happier more confident woman? I am not sure what happened, but it was obvious something clicked. So for now..it is what it is. By Thursday, my routine had returned and I struggled through my work week looking forward to Friday. When I began to create the weekly schedule for my office, I noticed one of my assistants was off the day I was scheduled to see the surgeon again (8/17) so I called the office to see if I could possibly have my appointment pushed up hoping someone cancelled. I felt a little discourage when I had to leave a message but lo and behold, I got a call back an hour later from the very helpful and excited office manager that was glad I had called in. She had been on vacation when I had my last visit so my appointment was scheduled in error. She advised that I actually was scheduled to come in last week. (it would have been nice if someone would have called me) I told her I was not aware of this appt and she apologized asking if I could come in on Monday. I told her yes, advising I was looking forward to it because the winds had been let out of my sails waiting all this time. I also told her about my sleep study being scheduled later this month with a possible 2nd one early next month, but the appointment to discuss the results were not until the first week of October. She said she would try to get it changed for me realizing that I wanted to get the surgery "yesterday" which I agreed with a chuckle. She told me she would schedule me for the psych appointment on Monday when I came in, also taking me closer to the end of the processes. If all goes well, I hope to have everything done by the end of October so it can go to my insurance company for approval and I can prayerfully get a date. I felt my excitement return and it put me back on cloud 9. Only problem is, I know I have gained weight. I am not sure how much, but I know its most if not all of the 8 lbs I had lost. I have been doing happy hour more often with other stressful workers filling my body on a Grey Goose laden pink lemonade cocktail I enjoy always with a side of buffalo wings. I feel like crap. My back aches from the slight gain and my clothes are tighter. In fact a favorite pair of jeans I purchased a size smaller (it was the last pair and they were on sale) that I was fitting well, can not be zipped. Yeah guess who feels crappy about that?! One of my assistants is prepping for gastric and she just finally finished the last of her testing yesterday. We promised we would try to set our dates where they wont collide, especially since her surgery is going to require more recovery time. It looks like that is going to be impossible at this point and she will probably get to go in first. I cant worry about it or her because I still have a very long way to go and alot more work to do, but my level of excitement has come back and I am looking forward to Monday so I can find out the result of my tests and prepare for the next phase. Please keep me in prayer.

That was fun!!!!!! I got to the hospital and they were all ready for me! This part was just like the banding surgery in March. This is the tale of what happened next! First of all what is a Port Revision? Most of you already know but for the few who do not......it is when there is a leak in the port itself or the tubing going to the band! It is possible for the port to be damaged when the Doctor is doing a fill or adjustment. When there is a leak the doctor must go back in thru the belly button and fix the leak or replace the port. He finds the leak or problem with the port with a dye that is put into the port/tubing. This is all done with a local anesthesia so you are awake the whole time they are working on you and what ever is broken gets fixed, done, it was really quite fun......but then you hear the words of the Doctor, "Cheryl, The port has detached itself from the tubing and the tubing has gone up inside of you and I can not get it without doing it laparoscopically!", okay cool here we go on a nice trip to who knows where for a little while, I told them all night night and thanks for the great job and out I went! I woke up in the middle of a cartoon version of The Road Runner, it was really funny! I only had to stay at the hospital for a few hours, then I went home. So now today, it is almost the same as when I came home from the initial banding! I have three cuts from the laparoscopic part and the belly button cut! A bit sore today, feels like a Mac truck rolled over me a couple of times. BEST OF ALL!!!!!!!!! even though I am only on liquids, RESTRICTION, SWEET RESTRICTION! Oh how great it feels to have my old friend back in my body! Doc Feiz gave me a fill yesterday also just a little one. I can not say this enough, This young Doctor Feiz is amazing, kind, caring and very very special. Even my husband thinks so! So now back to loosing the tons and back to eating small portions. Just a side note! I was without any restriction for over 2 weeks, I ate a little more in portion size then with restriction and officially at the hospital yesterday I had only gained 2 pounds which I am sure is already gone with being on the liquids! This says to me that even with my band not being tight, I stayed in control of my hunger, the band was still doing its job, I still one night got food stuck eating too fast! I love my BAND!

Did you end up having to pay for the port revision? Even though I was a self pay I went to a doc who is on my provider list in case I had any complications I hoped they would be covered but who knows!?

Today was a nerve-racking day! :smile2: I had some very back news today of someone who was once married into our family that committed suicide last night. It was so sad because this poor guy had no one who loved him. Even his own mother denied she was his mother and wasn't planning on burying him. I had to keep it together because I had my networking luncheon today called the Hispanic Network of Austin with 50 people coming to network. While I was setting up for the luncheon, I got more updates on my surgery with the location of the hotel that True Results is putting us up in because the surgery is in another city. I'm trying to write this down, set up, and NOT cry. I was nervous knots all day!! I felt off my game at the luncheon, but it was still a GREAT luncheon! One of my acquaintances, who's fast becoming a friend, was SO supportive and wants to meet with me before my surgery and visit me post-op. She had gastric bypass before the lapband was an option, so she understands me and what I'm about to go through. I'm so grateful for her and I hope I'll be able to count on her when I need encouragement. The surgery is next Friday and I'm so excited and so scared all at the same time. Is that normal? I don't know, but it's something I must do for myself and my health. My mother-in-law is so funny. She's visiting with us and not from this country. Where she comes from, there just aren't a lot of obese people, so she can't understand why I'm getting surgery. Why can't I just eat salad? LMAO!! :lol:If it was that simple, I would have done that by now! My husband's so supportive and I'm very fortunate in that sense. He has always taken such good care of me and has seen me through some difficult health situations. He curses me back to health, but I know he worries about each time I get sick. I'm hoping that my health will improve now and he won't have to worry so much.

After I had my port revision I had pretty good restriction but I could take a bite or two and it would sort of hurt but then if I waited a few minutes I could go ahead with my meal and to me was eating too much so I decided to go and get another fill. Well when I did this he moved me up to 1.6 and the rest of that day and most of the next day I couldnt hardly even swallow liquid or even saliva was uncomfortable and I was burping up acid so by the next afternoon I decided to go and get some taken out. The medical assistant went in and tried to get it and she couldnt get it out so she called the nurse in and she tried and by then she could only get like less than one cc to come back out and now I have no restriction at all. My question is has anyone experienced this? I am scared that somehow the first girl somehow punctured the tubing or something and all my saline leaked out. I am scared now because I just recently had the port revision and I dont want to have to go back in now and have something else fixed. Can anyone advise? I cant get another appt with the dr until December 20th when he is back in town.

Paula... You know what... I thought about this more today and guess what... time has already changed things. I used to worry constantly that I would do something to "wreck" my banding... make my band slip... etc... now I rarely think about that. I used to think about every bite I put in my mouth and have to really focus on chewing well... now it's just a habit. I used to manage one bit too much ALOT and end up with pain because I couldn't seem to heed the warning signs... now I just stop and throw what's left away. So... time is changing the way I relate to my band. I guess it's like being a diabetic... you can't forget, but tools to control the disease become part of your life. Miss Vera... I think Miss Nicci is feeling much better. SHe was still having problems after her surgery but I think that she is now on the mend. She looks absolutely awesome... I told her that she looks like she should be on the cover of ELLE. She really has had a tough time of it... I pray that her rough times have come to an end. My sister reached her weight-loss goal in less than six months after her surgery. Her recovery was awful and that helped me opt for the banding! She does have the dumping syndrome but has learned to eat around it a bit... she's coming up on her 2 year post-op anniversary and has gained back about 20% of her excess weight. Needless to say she is freaked about that and is trying to make the changes to stop the gain. She does say that she would still opt for the bypass but she is encouraging her hubby to go the banding route if he decides to have WLS.

First Official Fill and not doing good!
Nenaquetuhace commented on Nenaquetuhace's blog entry in Blog 62784
To make a long story short 252 lbs at the time of surgery on 9/24/09. First fill scheduled for 11/17 but found that port had flipped. Revision on 1/14/10. My current weight is 218 and I had my first fill on 3/1/10. I have been on liquids since. but barely.. they tried 2cc but it was too tight and took someout so I believe that I have a bit of 1 cc.. and the liquid is so hard to go down.. I am going to try to go on mushies for dinner tonight because I am so starving!! does anyone have any suggestions? Also the protein was too dense to go down as well. -
You made the right decision. I am ready for restriction too. Bypass has way to many complications that could occur. Hang in there!

Enough lurking, time to share my story.
alumascape posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Well, as the title suggests I've been a member of the form for a while but just as a reader I haven't posted anything yet. I figured it was time to post my story so I could get some feedback, and possibly a little guidance. My journey started about a year ago when I had made the final decision to go ahead with the gastric sleeve. I was very confident in my surgeon and was excited about the surgery. As per protocol, he did and endoscopy beforehand and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. I had my sleeve gastrectomy done on August 28th 2017. Almost immediately, I noticed what I would call an agonizing amount of pain and extreme gastric reflux. This was before I was even off of my post-surgery liquid diet. Over the coming weeks it didn't get better, only worse. I was continually told by my surgeon that it's normal, and it happens to some people. Within about 2 months the pain in my stomach to get better, at that point I was developing a pain on my right hand side below my rib cage. I had done some research, so I had a pretty good idea that it was my gallbladder. My surgeon agreed with me, and without even running any tests he decided to remove my gallbladder. My gallbladder was removed in January of 2018, and almost immediately I noticed the pain in my abdomen was gone. However, the gastric reflux still persisted. In early February of this year by surgeon decided to do an endoscopy to see what could be causing the acid reflux. He told me that I had numerous moderate to severe ulcers and that revision surgery would be advised. I was scheduled for traditional gastric bypass on March 22nd of this year. I'm pleased to report that the gastric reflux has gone away. However, I'm not able to keep down any solid foods without violently regurgitating them. I was following my post surgery diet without any deviation. The first soft food that I tried was mashed potatoes, no salt or butter and it didn't go well. Almost immediately I violently regurgitated them. Within about three minutes of that I had some of the most excruciating pain I've ever had in my life, it started near my stomach and felt like a travel down. I told my wife that I had to go to the emergency room immediately, once I got there she called my surgeon. The surgeon conferred with the emergency room physician and ordered a CT scan with contrast. I was advised that my stomach was clear and I didn't have any blockages. My surgeon had told the emergency room physician to prescribe me Prilosec 40 mg and I was to take it twice a day until I saw him again. A few days later I saw the surgeon, and he informed me that it was most likely an irritated stomach and that it was normal. This was about 3 weeks ago. I'm still not able to keep down any soft food of any type. I'm still on liquids, and even when I take in liquids I feel very uncomfortable. I'm not exactly sure how to describe it, it's not cramping, it's not nausea or pain it's a very awkward feeling. At this point, I've decided to get a second opinion and had all my records sent to another surgeon. I'm just curious if anyone has had these symptoms, rather these combination of symptoms or if anyone has any ideas for me to try. If you're reading this and considering weight loss surgery please I implore you to not let this deter you. From people I've talked to and information I've read, this amount of side effects is very out of the ordinary. I've lost almost a hundred pounds since my first surgery and I am feeling pretty good other than the symptoms I've described. Thanks everyone so much for taking the time to read, I look forward to any advice that can be offered. I hope everyone out there is doing great, and I wish everyone the best of luck and whatever stage of the journey they may be in!- 5 replies

I've been doing research for a long time but I was afraid to talk to anyone about my interest in lapband. My dad did Gastric Bypass last year. He did research and had to do an 18 month pre-op diet plan for his insurance. He made it everyone's business every step of the way, and that is just not my style. I don't want to wait until I'm in my 60s. My dad was too heavy for too long and even now as the weight drops off, he's still in pain and miserable. I want to enjoy life with my family and run and play with my daughter. I go to my first lap band info session, possibly followed by a support meeting next Tuesday June 10th.

Is band slipping REALLY an issue?
Britalian replied to Wheelchair's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
(Raising hand) My band slipped after 2 years. I am going to have it revised on June 27. I suspect my slippage was due to excessive vomiting. I got filled once right after surgery and once right after that. It seemed like an appropriate fill. There were times when it felt tight and I would vomit, but then other times it would feel fine, so I never did get it un-filled. I will definitely be more aware next go-round. I did lose plenty of weight though, so it's all good! -
Went for 1st fill and didn't get one
dawn of dibley replied to dawn of dibley's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
my doctor actually tells his patients to let him know if they are going on vacation so he can give them an unfill. he said there is a lifetime to be on a diet like this one, so you should enjoy your vacations. (he doesn't force and unfill, but he will give one if you want one. ) just so nobody thinks i came up with that on my own. it's good to know that you went 5 months without needing one though. i will reassess when august gets here and if i'm still losing, i may bypass that fill as well. we'll just have to wait and see. -
Definately open!!!! I love to talk about it and answer questions for the most part. Although when your open and you don't lose as fast as the girl with the gastric bypass people are usually thinking whatever you had done is not working. I hate that part of it.....

CAN'T STOP LOSING WEIGHT??
New&Improved replied to New&Improved's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My bypass was 120cm -
Typing this post from the gym this morning. Literally one year ago this morning, I was on the way to the hospital for the band-to-bypass revision... Today, I'm going to run 5 miles on the elliptical... Life has changed and I am so thankful for friends, family, and this community for the support and encouragement along this journey. As I often tell folks, I may have reached my weight loss goal, but the war of the scale and heart remains...always need to focus on maintaining a healthy weight and living life. Moderation is my friend. Binges are no more and emotional eating is always on my mind...... Reflection is key. It's not easy, but the surgery wasn't a magic pill -- just a tool among other tools to help me along the way. Maybe my new birthday will be Jan 21, 2013 instead of my actual birthday

Recipes for life after weight loss, revised and updated
jmg1263 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 5 days post sugary, gastric bypass. It is NOT easy. I finally today am feeling a little bit better. I keep telling myself that this period is going to be HELL but follow the program and it will be ok. I had to meditate through the pain at times. Tomorrow I am going to begin with a 2000 step walk. I was feeling low today also but then I got a recipe book in the mail that really lifted my spirits. The food in it looks amazing. Really good looking stuff but prepared in a high Protein low calorie way. I have NOT read the entire book yet but I know the future will look brighter. I have not yet had a chance to read it but I did thumb through it. A GREAT looking pizza recipe in there and I can't wait to try it. Book is: recipes for after weight loss surgery, revised and updated by Margaret Furtado. There are so many amazing looking recipes in there. Pizza, Humus, Sausage and Lentil Soup, Latkes, crab cakes, stroganoff. Looks amazing and the book is loaded with pictures and lots of wonderful looking stuff. I am actually excited and it lifted my spirits. One example recipe is below. AGAIN, I have not read the entire book so I am not sure at what stage I can start this but it is promising. I was miserable but 5 days after surgery I am finally feeling better. Sharing one of the recipes in the book. Pita Pizza: 284 calories. 25.6 grams protein. Makes 4. 4 small 4 inch whole wheat pita breads. 1 can 6 0z, low sodium tomato paste 1 teaspoon dry oregano 1 teaspoon dry basil 1 teaspoon dried thyme 4 tablespoons grated parm cheese 1 cup cooked boneless skinless chicken breast cut into small cubes. Or, chicken italian sausage, or ground meat. 1/2 cup fresh slices mushrooms 1 can, 2.5 oz sliced black olives 3/4 cup (85g) shredded part skim mozzarella cheese Oven 375. Lightly spray a sheet pan with cooking spray. Put on all toppings and bake aprox 15 minutes. Picture of the pizzas look AMAZING. NOW, I have to say I have not read the entire book yet so I am not sure when this recipe can be used but it is good to know that down the road a healthy pizza is possible. Looking through this book raised my spirits. John
