My Emotional & Mental Fight with Upcoming Surgery Date
bander11 replied to Cynsayshun's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know the feeling - in pondering dates I keep saying nope can't have that one it's too close to my daughters B'Day 10/2 - she passed away 12/2004. Then there is 10/14 - nope that's when my daddy died but I still have a couple clearances to go through so were shooting for 10/26 or 11/3 don't thing I have any issues with either of those dates. But it's funny how we let dates control us. My daughter did it too - she was scheduled for a Csection on 10/14 (this has been a few years ago) she was exited about having a date for her son to be born - but then she got home and was telling me the date - it hit her - she said oh mom, I can't do that date - she jumped right on the phone and requested the day before or after - so my grandson was born 10/13/2004. I agree with the poster above that you hearing your song was a sign...He's watching over you and I am sure supporting you - he will be there holding your hand until you wake up - Take care and let us know how you are doing... -
To call or not to call, that is the question....
Penpen replied to donbie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have UHC also. I had my first appointment with my surgeon and thought they sent for ins. approval right away but found out later, that they sent it out a week later. They actually told me that when I called to check on it about 2 weeks after the visit. There must be some reason it takes them that long to send for approval. I was also told that legally the insurance company has 30 days to reply. But if I remember right, it took almost 3 weeks for approval. Also, I checked our UHC account online nearly dayly and nothing ever showed up. Things didn't start hitting our account (reports, claims, etc.) until after surgery. I'm 19 days post op. I hope this helps. I actually blogged my timeline if your interested in seeing it. My blog is right above my signature. -

Another menstrual question, after surgery did your flow pick up ALOT? I used to bleed for maybe a full day and half of a night. Not even enough for 3 tampons, and now it's constant and very bright in color, should I be concerned? I have been anemic since surgery also SW: 324 DOSW: 322 CW: 315 surgery date-7/10/13 Sent from my iPhone using VST

I'm about 19 days post-op and I'm surprised by the amount of food I can eat. I did the "cottage cheese test" (from "Success Habits of Weight Loss Surgery Patients" by Colleen Cook) and according to the test, my stomach can comfortably hold 10 ounces (3/4 cup), which shocked me. I thought it would be half that. I plan to ask my surgeon more about this on my next visit, but is this unusual? I lost quite a bit of weight before surgery on the liquid diet (one week), but loss has been slower than I expected after that. I've decided to weigh weekly instead of every day, so I don't get discouraged by the inevitable up-and-down of daily weights. I know the surgery isn't a magic bullet and it's up to me to make this work, but the sluggish weight loss is a little discouraging. I'm still learning how much I can and should eat, and I'm tracking my intake on myfitnesspal to make sure my calorie counts are reasonable. I'm taking in between 800-1,000 calories on most days, sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less.

Emotional And Freaking Out
SKCUNNINGHAM replied to melissa45154's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was where you are now one year ago. I had just had a wonderful Christmas with family, and knew I would be facing surgery soon. I wondered if I would be around to see another Christmas - I was scared to undergo surgery and thought I would die young (relatively) if I didn't have it. Fast forward to now. I have been sleeved 10 months and am within 10 pounds of goal. I have lost a small person's worth of weight. I am SO MUCH healthier and feell SO MUCH better. And, I really enjoy being this size! Life is much better at a 10 - 12 petite than a 24W. Try to focus on the end goal. Don't let anything you can think or worry about keep you from focusing on your end goal. Anything you have to do, eat, not eat, start doing, stop doing or change is worth reaching your end goal. I wish you the best of luck on your journey. -

Did anyone get their gallbladder removed before surgery?
bromo replied to Princess Jaz's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had mine out about 10 years ago so a long time before surgery. I was up and fine in a day or two with that surgery. -
I'm getting banded on Friday and I am excited. This year, I won't gain 10 lbs during the holidays. With a little help from my band, I will finally lose the weight and KEEP IT OFF.

Ok guys i have been not eating breakfast as i am not a typical breakfast eater so i get up at 6am and about 10 i start getting hungry which i was an early luncher at 11am so i have been doing the meal replacement bars/ shakes from 9:30 to 10 am this holds me over until i get home at 6:30pm then i am eating a regular meal. This keeps me under the calorie intake for the day or right where i need to be if i meet it. Rarely over it . But my question is if i make myself do one for breakfast and lunch then eat supper or if i eat a normal lunch and then do the meal replacement for dinner will any of these combinations make me lose weight quicker i am in my 5th month of the dr supervised weightloss diet. So Oct 10th will be my 6th visit for that so we will start with the appts for the pysh eval and the nutritionist and the surgery consult. I know they are going to require me to do the only liquid diet for the two week prior to surgery so i am trying to get used to the protein shakes. Any tips on how to optimize the effectiveness of using these?

I Got Approved!!! YESSSS!!!
SkinnyMiniMe replied to Band Newbie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
YES YES YES!!! I am still in the process but hoping for a December Banding Birthday So far these are the things I found and like... * since I quit Diet Soda (almost 2 weeks YEAH), I am hooked on MIO Water Enhancer (target sells it) squirt into water. Its in the same aisle as the crystal light. * I also bought the Thermos Intrak Hydration water bottle LOVE IT ($10 at target) keep track of how much you drink and leakproof. * GNC MyoFusion Protein powder (chocolate my fave so far) 30grams of protein per serving * GNC Blender Ball cups (great for your shakes on the go) I have a few. I have not tried it yet but I may try the crystal light hunger drink mix, it has 3g of protein and 5 g of Fiber per serving. I love tips too. I really want to know about Vitamins after banding. I want to make sure I take something to prevent hair loss. -
So I finally got a date the last time I met with my surgeon - October 17th. (SO CLOSE!) He asked me to lose 10 pounds before the next time we met, and to meet with the psychiatrist again for the final clearance. The first time the psych wanted me to get stable on my antidepressant before clearing me. So I lost the 10 pounds and met with the psych. All good, right? Well, the psych told me he needed to get in touch with MY psychiatrist and therapist first, and that it should only take a few days. It has literally been a MONTH since then and he hasn't managed to get in touch with the psych yet (he did call the therapist.) My psych claims they've been playing "phone tag" but I suspect that neither of them have really put in the effort. I mean, how hard is it, really? A 3-minute phone conversation? So either way tomorrow I'm starting the liquid fast, even though this might have to be postponed. They can't send everything into insurance without the clearance, so I still might get bad news. Ugh! When I told the surgeon about this last Friday, to his credit he was pissed too and told me to call him if I don't hear anything from the coordinator or psych by tomorrow. I'm so stressed and annoyed about this. It wouldn't be the end of the world to postpone a month or a couple of weeks, but it seems like such a lame reason. I've gone through so much with the tests and clearances and now this? Anyway, wish me luck! I feel pretty good about the liquid fast, at least, and have stocked up on lots of Protein Powder and Crystal Lite the list the nutritionist gave me also included Diet Snapple, strangely enough, so I got a case of that, too. Onward!

Losing Weight Prior To Surgery
slimthickens replied to Jenn31MA's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is always good to lose some weight prior to surgery but I sometimes think that surgeons are a bit unrealistic when they require you to lose up to 20 pounds before WLS. Most of us are food addicts in the first place which is why we are seeking the surgery to begin with and I think that should be taken into consideration. We would never expect an alcoholic to go without a drink for 3 or 4 weeks before being allowed to go to rehab so why would a surgeon require so much weight to be lost? I understand that the liver needs to be shrunk just prior to surgery but that could easily be accomplished with the loss of 5 to 10 pounds in the last 2 weeks prior to surgery. Requiring so much to be lost causes those of us with food issues to go into panic mode and begin bingeing and results in weight gains not losses. In my opinion if you don't think this is something you will be able to handle in a healthy way I would advise searching out another surgeon who's requirements are a bit more reasonable and that will allow you to lose a minimal amount of weight without causing you so much stress that you end up gaining. Oh, and for the record I was only required to lose a few pounds the last week before surgery which I did and my surgeoun said my liver looked perfect because of it. I did a diet of liquids for breakfast and lunch with string cheese and cottage cheese for snacks and for dinner I had a low carb meal of a meat, veggie, and salad. -
In your face moments
Headhunter replied to bashful1269's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The quickest story I can offer is that of my 94-year-old mother. I don't get to see her that often, because she lives some distance away, in a town that is not readily accessible by airport. The last time I saw her was about 15 months ago, 2 days before the surgery that was going to remove my lap band, repair the significant damage caused by the band, and perform a gastric Bypass. This was a very "iffy" surgery. There were LOTS of problems caused by the band, and there was some serious question as to whether I would make it through the surgery unscathed. (NOTE: I'm not "band-bashing" here, the circumstances under which I saw my mother last were quite traumatic for us all.) I went out to visit my Mom right before the surgery because I wasn't all that sure I would see her again. As it turned out, my surgeon was brilliant, and I came through fine. But my recovery was many months long, and I was unable to get out to visit her. I was able to go out to see her earlier this month, on her 94th birthday. I was almost exactly 100 pounds lighter than I was when she had last seen me. I arrived at her house a little later in the day than I had planned, so she was napping in her recliner in the living room (as any respectable 94 year-old SHOULD be doing in the afternoon!). Her front door was locked, but I had a key, so I quietly entered her house, went into the living room, gave her a kiss on the cheek to wake her up. I stood in front of her as she slowly came back to reality. It was AMAZING, and quite joyful, to see the look on her face, and to see the tears roll down her cheeks. She just sat there and cried for about 10 minutes. It was quite wonderful for both of us. Of course, I had to endure 3 days of her parading me around to her pals. And some of them had Alzheimers, and kept drifting in and out of knowng who I was, but it was a fun and special few days. I glad I could give that gift to my Mother. She knows her son is happy, healthy, and lookin' "purdy good", and there is no better gift that a child can give a parent than that. HH -
I am 19 years old and I can bot wait to get started losing weight after surgery. However, I am a little worried about what will go on during surgery. My pre op appt is April 25 but some information from someone who has been there would be nice ?!?!

I'm sorry and hope you feel better. Prayers going out to you and smiling. Now my nerves are shot...surgery 3/19

I had a drain to empty the first 3 days. Just once or twice/day....No big deal there. I was allowed to shower day after surgery but was told to hold off on complete submersion in baths or hot tubs for two weeks. Really no care needed for the incisions. Steristrips and glue came off on their own in 7-10 days.

Hoping Time Goes By Fast..month 2 Of 6 :(
Misstxdiva replied to brookeco's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know the feeling! I just finished my 6 months and having surgery on 4/10. I found out I had all the stuff the doctor said I would when I was 21 and didn't listen now it's catching up to me at age 25. I don't look at it as a bad thing. Look at it as a good thing, you know what you have and learn how to fix it whether it be with medication or losing weight. This can also help with co-morbids too if your insurance requires you have at least one to have approval. The next 4 months will go by fast and before you know it you'll be on your way to approval and surgery. Good luck on your journey. -
I had my gastric bypass 10 days ago and I have had nothing but struggle. Day 3 postoperative I started with a fever was discharged on day 5 and vomiting everything I drink and everything I ate on postoperative 7/8 and 9 days. My abdomen has been very itchy no matter what I wear what lotion I put on or what soap I use. I have lost 12 pounds since surgery.

Why my 3mo stall is an NSV and other misc. ramblings from the half glass full girl!
newat52 replied to LipstickLady's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Right there with you girl! I have been stuck for almost 2 months. I've eeked out about 3 lost in that time but usually the same up and down. Although, I've been on vacation twice in the 2 months for a week at at time so there were some splurges. Not on really bad things like bread, Pasta, and processed carbs ( it's my promise to my self to not go there till the end of the year) but on some wine and skinny girl margaritas so I can get the stall from that respect. However, the inches are still coming off. my 12 shorts are getting looser and have tried on 10's but won't buy them. Although short season here in Texas lasts till Oct. but that's only another month and I do get a cheap thrill out of jacking up my britches from time to time. I'm easily amused that way. My closet is getting emptier by the day and I love it! I look forward to when I get to my goal and fill it back up with cute and stylish clothes. Black will no longer be the mainstay of my color pallet. I will have a little black dress though! I am making excellent choices most of the time and It is becoming a natural thing to do. That is the NSV for me. Ice cream? Not even tempted, the way I feel now feels WAY better than ice cream. Last week I'm on the plane on the way home, sitting there playing the the huge extra amount of seat belt material, who know it could be so entertaining? Later in the flight, I realize I am sitting with my legs crossed WITH the tray table down! How freaking cool is that? I didn't even know that was possible! I honestly have ZERO regrets and yes, we are still on the honeymoon and I fully realize the hard work really kicks in when we get to goal and have to maintain for the rest of our lives. I'm sure I will moan and complain from time to time, but I am 100% sure it will be worth the work! I'm SO happy for you and I know exactly how you feel! -
Pre Op Day 6 And 10.4 Pounds Down.
Pennie replied to Lisa's Hope's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's amazing! You are doing so great! I really had a hard time with the pre-op diet, especially the first several days. But it got easier. Still, I think it was the hardest part of this entire process for me. Your day will be here before you know it! Hang in there. Celebrate those 10+ pounds lost!! (with something non-caloric, of course!) -
Hi! New To The Boards!
Kerinilla replied to Kerinilla's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ms V and Amytug- I think that for the most part, UH is trying to see who can hang on long enough to keep at it for six months. Kinda weeding people out. Just making you jump through hoops, so people will give up. Not me! Amy, I can lose weight too- and like you, I can't keep it off! I have a nurse that works for UH that told me, " if you lose weight during the six month diet, it won't be counted against you. The first weigh-in that the Dr. Takes is the weight we base our decision on. But- I wouldn't gain any weight while on it. "So, I plan on losing about 25-30 lbs. my Dr. Said he jus needs 10-15 to shrink my liver, and he's happy. Some companies that use UH don't require the 6 month supervised diet. Some only 3 months. Some nothing at all. Depends on your employer. If you're unsure as to what your protocol is, call your insurance and grill them for specifics. hope I helped! Hope that answers your questions. -
Ayay, This is NOT a diet. This is a lifestyle change. I don't know how far post-op you are, but I'm guessing you're in the 3-5 weeks category. If so, search here for the 3 week stall. Almost everyone goes through that stall and finds that the scale is standing still for a bit. Take your measurements now, so you have something to refer to later, pay attention to how your clothes are fitting as well. Are they looser? If you did take pre-op measurements, are you losing inches? I lost my first pants size during my 3 week stall. I put them on, zipped them up, and they fell to the ground! I'm not following any diet except: 70grams of Protein and 64 oz of Water per day. I don't track calories, carbs, or anything else. I have started adding in more "good" carbs because I've upped my exercise routine, but that's about the only time I worry about carbs. Stalls will happen, but they happen because your body needs the time to adjust to the changes. I shape-shifted in the last few months, losing a good bit of mass in my hips and thighs and developing muscle definition in my arms, tummy and thighs. In that same three months, I lost 10 pounds. Now my weight loss has started up again, but I imagine that I'll go through another shift in a month or so. The best advice I can offer you is this: Don't let the scale run your life. Weigh less often and concentrate on your protein and water goals. The weight will take care of itself. Add in some exercise, even if it's 5 minutes on the treadmill or exercise bike. Once it's part of your routine, you'll miss exercise when you don't do it. Good luck!

10 more days. I am on day 5 of my liquid diet prep and it is true what they say. Your hunger fades...
