A normal day of food post op?

I'm 4.5 months out. I eat 3 meals per day and no snacks (except 3 calcium chews per day for a total of 45 calories). My meals are typically 100-200 calories each and I typically eat 500-600 calories per day. If I'm low on protein for the day, I'll drink a protein shake or protein hot cocoa in addition to the meals. My meals are about half a cup each, a little more if there's lettuce because I figure that by the time I chew it up, it loses a lot of volume. Breakfast examples: Half container of triple zero yogurt with half a scoop of protein powder, raspberries/strawberries or PB2, keto granola or nut clusters Scrambled egg with 1/2 ounce cottage cheese, turkey sausage link Protein pancake with strawberries/raspberries and whipped cream Half packet of protein oatmeal with 1/4 scoop of protein powder, walnuts, and shredded carrots 4 ounces cottage cheese with nacho cheese seasoning Lunch: Protein bar if I'm at work; otherwise, same as dinner Typical dinner: Mexican casserole (chicken, cauliflower rice, salsa, black beans, cheese, plain greek yogurt) Salad with chicken and light dressing, topped with crushed Quest protein chips Chicken salad (shredded chicken, plain Greek yogurt, ranch seasoning), lettuce, tomato on half a 1 net carb tortilla with 1/4 ounce cheese White chicken chili Taco bites (shredded chicken, salsa, black beans, lettuce, tomato, plain Greek yogurt on Quest protein chips) Ricotta bake with turkey meat sauce Chicken or pork with sugar-free BBQ sauce, green beans -

At three months, I was eating scrambled eggs or rolled oats for breakfast (2 scrambled eggs took 3 days to eat & a serve of rolled oats took 3 or 4 days). For lunch I ate about 50/60g of chicken or half a pork sausage or a slice of smoked salmon wrapped around a small wedge of cucumber. Dinner was about 50/60g of steak, lamb, pork, fish with two or three beans or a cauliflower floret or a tablespoon of steamed cabbage. If I cooked mince I’d add carrots, celery, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes & sometimes peas & corn & I could eat about a third of a cup. My snack was always high protein yogurt (a 160g tub or 260ml drinking yogurt) & sometimes fruit (slice of watermelon, 8-10 grapes, a mango cheek) or sometimes a cube of cheese. The fruit & cheese were just if I felt hungry. I ate my snack/s in the afternoon or after dinner. -

I don't eat a lot of meat or necessarily veggies. But stick to. Low carb way of eating and have for years but for some reason it stopped working and I turned to the tool of gastric bypass surgery to help me. Metabolic disorders and inability to exercise due to lifelong chronic illness and disability doesn't help. But I'm here a year and a half later after surgery. it helps to calculate your baseline protein using the ratio of 0.36 grams of protein per 1 lb body weight. I have a morning protein bar with tea it's my routine. Lunch is my main meal. I might for example have a skillet meal of veggie burger, egg and maybe a little avocado or even a baby banana cooked in. Dinner is routinely Greek yogurt usually oikos triple zero mixed with protein powder usually PEScience (but I tdon't tidy VEga sport and it's good too) some golden flax, a little peanut butter powder sprinkled on top, freeze a bit, top with sola low carb granola only 15 grams I measure everything. Sometimes a sprinkle of pepitas. I like a combination of flavor and texture. But I usually end up getting more protein than I require ... while being low carb . And minimal sugar. edit: you don't need carbs to feel satisfied and can get similar taste and texture profiles from low carb meals. I had to deal with sugar addiction long before I even thought bariatric surgery was ever an option. -
Different plans seem to have some differences in what’s considered a liquid or a purée. I’ve heard that some plans consider yogurt a liquid, and some people are even allowed to eat yogurt while still in the hospital. I couldn’t have yogurt until purées (1 week post-op). And I couldn’t have eggs until soft foods, but I didn’t even try them until I was almost 3 months out because I’ve read that a lot of people don’t tolerate them early on. Fortunately, I haven’t had any problems with scrambled eggs. I’ve read that adding cottage cheese to scrambled eggs make them more tender, so I add 1/2 ounce cottage cheese to 1 egg.

Once I started on soft foods, I could tolerate cottage cheese, yogurt and refried beans that were thinned with broth, but my tummy did not tolerate eggs for several more months. It's different for everyone, so just experiment until you find what works for you. And your list of tolerated foods will change each week.

You can add a lot of protein with legumes. Refried beans were one of my favorites during the soft food stage. I have transitioned to Whole Food Plant Based eating during the past year, and even without any animal products in my diet, I still get at least 60 gm of protein a day from legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and plant based milks and yogurt. It really isn't that hard to do. -

I'm mixing vega sport plant based protein powder in yogurt and it's good. You can mix it into Ripple milk for added protein (higher protein plant based milk) they also make a yogurt. I find Greek yogurt with digestive enzymes doesn't upset my dairy intolerance. As long as it's low sugar. Oikos triple zero has been good. Take chewable digestive enzymes and that helps a lot too. They call Greek yogurt full liquids and cottage cheese, scrambled eggs are soft and you will only be able to have 1 or 2 bites and be full. If you are not comfortable eating those things then wait .

I lost 15 pounds on the two week pre-op diet so you could always go on that early... If I remember correctly the diet was 6-8oz of Protein a day (meat or dairy), 1 yogurt a day, 1/2 cup of fruit a day, 2 healthy fats a day (such as 1/4 avocado or 1/4 cup of nuts), and all the veggies you want. I tended to live off of a Veggie soup most of the time. -
My week 2 says scrambled eggs, cottage cheese and Greek yogurt I’m still considered liquids. How do you I liquify scrambled eggs? Can I just boil an eggs and put a tad mayo and blend it? I’m so confused why scrambled eggs is on my week 2 😂 I don’t have my post op nutrition visits until the 14th

I recommend preparing by adopting today the nutrition plan you will have 6 weeks after surgery. Drop sugar sweetened beverages, fried foods, and most processed foods. This will make the pre and post op diet easier to follow. Your pre and post op liquid diet may include protein shakes, sugar free or fat free versions of pudding, Jello, popsicles, soup broth, gatorade, yogurt, and milk. Puree foods: eggs, melted cheese or string cheese, mashed potatoes, bananas, peanut butter, applesauce, lean ground meats like turkey, and cooked carrots. Everyone is different, but I recommend building a sustainable nutrition plan after the puree / soft food stage that doesn't include protein bars or protein shakes. I'm consuming 2070 calories daily with 112 g protein daily with no protein bars or shakes. -

Well food is doing ok. I am rarely hungry and have to make an effort to eat. Problem for me is I am used to drinking while I eat...which does not work. I immediately throw up. I am getting better by not having a drink near me while I eat. Then wait 30 minutes before drinking and small amount often after that). Breakfast (8-9am) is usually a premier protein shake made in to a smoothie with banana or strawberry (so much better than plain and stays cold). Or Greek yogurt and a cheese stick. Lunch(12-1) small chicken salad or shredded chicken with a little lite mayo and almonds or hamburger patty (no bun) with pickles Dinner(5-6pm) beef roast or chicken with small salad or veggie snacks (11 or 3) is usually fresh fruit, yogurt or mixed nuts. Protein is 65-85 day Calories 600-800 Every meal less than 1 cup. I am consistently losing about 15lb month right now. Little to no exercise (in a wheel chair). I am ok with slow and steady. it's hard to know how much you're going to use it. I use my Instant Pot in pressure cooker mode about twice a week now (I've had it for about two years, I think), so it stays out on the counter. The first few months I used it almost every day, but now I use it mostly to make yogurt, sometimes (dried) beans, chili, marinara sauce - in other words, things that cook for hours on the stove that I can make in the pot in about an hour (or less). My mother-in-law's was a big dust collector in her pantry, so I asked her if I could have it last Christmas as a backup in case mine ever died (which I'm sure they eventually do...) -

Wow, 3 meals/day with no snacks would be difficult for me. I have 1/2 an apple or orange midmorning and other half mid afternoon or string cheese, yogurt, a vegetable, etc.-something sensible but it prevents stomach acid and nausea for me. It also helps maintain a good blood sugar level in my case. We’ve each got different issues to deal with so makes sense plans can be different. I told doc I want my plan to be something I can live with long term and this works. Continued success and best wishes to you! -

I just made a smoked salmon spread with 4 oz. salmon, 1/2 cup greek yogurt, 1/3 cup ricotta, peeled and diced cucumbers; capers for flavor and dill weed for flavor. Ran it through the bullet. Four 2 oz servings, 9 g protein; 2 g fat, 80 cals. It was good and flavorful. The fish did not fall completely apart so it gave me something to actually chew. -

I have had my surgery and everything went well but I had no idea of the pain I was going to have to endure. Had my surgery on Thursday the 19th and was expecting to be out on the 21st. Doesn't look like it's going to happen I have not had a bowel movement yet nor have I pass gas so I won't be getting out. In the last past 24 hours I could not really drink anyting it would fit in my chest and come right back up like a foam. So they stopped me from having any liquids. Today is better I am able to get down some of my pureed food like the yogurt and I'm drinking Ensure clear Apple. Also have some pureed peaches and scrambled eggs didn't care for those. Pain that I had to go through with this gas is no joke. I'm only allowed to walk in my room to help move the gas. I know I needed to have the surgery but I was really thinking I made a bad choice. But today seems brighter and I know this was a good choice cuz I have not had any acid reflux in the last past 24 hours which is a blessing. I am 5'9 about 180 meters. I weigh 258lbs about 117 kilos. I first ate about 400-500 calories post op but they told me to increase as I needed to intake 90 grams of protein per day and around 40 of fat and max 30 grams of carbs. I am now between 800-900 calories per day. Mostly from protein shakes or yogurt (80-90%) of my calorie intake. I work out every morning for 45 minutes (10 -15 minutes on the treadmill 2x a week) then weights or pilates. I also alternating treadmill which is high intensity running or jogging with cycling or cross trainer. My nutritionist says everything is as expected but the numbers are not going down at all.

Feeling like quitting before I begin

Everyone's experience is different, but I haven't found managing nutritional needs to be difficult after my sleeve surgery. I'm not cooking these days either but I'm able to get enough protein with basic things like rotisserie chicken from the grocery store, eggs, yogurt, cheese and so on. I eat a little weird because I don't often eat a whole meal but I'm managing to get my nutritional needs met (I know because I'm still keeping track of everything). And of course I take my multivitamin daily and B12 weekly as my doctor prescribed. My bloodwork always comes back fine, the only suggestion the doctor has given me was to start taking Vitamin D, which I did. And there's no malabsorbtion with the sleeve, so that's not a factor. I do find that my appetite is significantly reduced. I know hunger comes back more quickly for some people, but 20 months out I'm still hungry less often and less urgently than I was before. One of the BEST side-effects of surgery for me is that things that used to be "comfort food" for me no longer have that emotional kick they used to have. I can eat a pancake with syrup and it tastes good, but whatever that emotional hit was that I used to get, that's gone. And that's a VERY good thing for me. I mostly avoid the carby, sweet stuff but I do allow myself a treat every now and then. And then it's RIGHT back on my eating plan because I don't want to wake up cravings for all that stuff. I still don't keep sweets or junk food in the house. When I have a treat, I have to make a special effort to go get it and it's planned. And I only get enough for one serving. When that's gone, I'm done and it's back to protein, dairy, nuts, eggs, etc. I'm an apple shape like you, so I know exactly what you mean. I've lost 11 inches off my waist, which my doctor is ecstatic about. Only you can decide if weight loss surgery is right for you, but I wouldn't let malnutrition fears be the deal-breaker. Your bariatric team will give you a diet designed to meet your nutritional needs and they'll be monitoring you. All the best, whatever you decide! 🤗 -

i have a pretty standard daily routine. egg whites and turkey sausage greek yogurt and protein shake lunch i eat oatmeal with pb powder and almond milk greek yogurt and granola. i eat a cliff bar before my workout. dinner i have ground turkey or ground chicken with rice and veggies. then maybe oatmeal again or yogurt. i bought a whoop strap and found i burn anywhere from 3000-3500 cals a day. i workout 6-7 days a week. depending on the impact of the workout. i have to eat often to get my cals in but i know what i wanted out of all this. things have worked out well for me. -
I had my gastric sleeve 3 weeks ago, and at first I had a bunch of issues getting my liquids in, but that is no longer the issue. I tried mashed potatoes and cottage cheese and both came right back up, but scrambled eggs and yogurt went down fine. Well, I was stupid and i take full responsibility for what i did. My family made some Spanish rice and i had some, not a huge amount, probably slightly over a quarter of a cup and it stayed down. But ever since then, anytime I eat anything, it wants to come up. Tonight I pureed some refried beans, which is allowed by my diet and I barely got a spoonful in and it started coming back up. The same thing happened earlier when I had some yogurt. I'm just wanting to know if anyone else has had this issue. I'm just wanting to not freak out that I've caused a blockage. I go see my doctor on friday, and unfortunately can't get in sooner because I have other doctors appointments all week. And if someone has had this issue, was there anything you did to help it? I'm going to start going back to just liquids until I see my doctor. I will NEVER do this again. I'm just freaking out right now. Thanks in advance!

My sleeve was done on 11/2 and I started soft proteins officially today, although I did get the OK to have egg, cottage cheese and yogurt last week. Tonight I ate 2 oz of ground turkey, topped with 1/4 cup of refried beans and 1 TBSP of shredded cheese. My husband thought it looked like a lot of food, and I suppose it was a little over 1/2c, total. Is that too much? I didn't get any sense of being overly full, but it was certainly more than I thought I would be able to eat. I can drink a full mug of broth without feeling too full. Is this normal? My weight loss has stalled the last 4 or 5 days, but calorie wise, I don't think I'm eating too much. I usually don't even get up to 700 calories. I'm afraid of gaining weight again. I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced fear of eating once transitioning back to purées and soft foods. I’m starting to become very anxious about everything that I’m putting in my mouth. I think part of what triggered this was my hitting a bit of a stall, which was pointed out to me on another thread. So far, it seems that my stall lasted only a couple of days- but that might be because I’ve not been eating enough. I’m panicking and obsessing if I go over 300-400 calories a day. Right now, I’m full of anxiety because today I ate PB2, hummus, mashed banana, yogurt, and crushed protein cereal, and all of that totals 425 calories. I don’t want to add more. I’m certain that capacity-wise, I *could* add more. This whole time, I haven’t felt a sense of restricted capacity. I’ve not felt full early into eating something, but maybe that’s because I’m only eating one thing at a time. I got down an entire medium sized mashed banana today within just a few minutes, and I didn’t feel overly full at all. I’ve yet to experience feeling overly full, which has surprised me. Because of what I’d been told by others, I expected to become full after 2-4 bites of something and that has never happened. Maybe that’s why I’m so afraid of eating: I haven’t yet sensed what my capacity is because I’ve not hit it yet. Anyway... anyone else experience fear and anxiety about eating during this stage?

I can eat more than a cup (I'm 5+ years out). I doubt anyone can tell I had surgery anymore - I eat about as much as my never-been-obese women friends who are watching their weight. If I go out, I'll order an appetizer - or if I get an entree, I'll take half of it home. Same as they do. I can't tolerate really fatty foods anymore (I can maybe have one falafel - or a few fries), but some people can. Unfortunately, I can inhale sweets. I was hoping surgery would stop that, but nope. I can eat 'em just fine. I don't dump - never have. About 70% of us don't. And if you're one of the ones who DOES dump, you can manage that by limiting or avoiding fatty or sugary foods. the first few weeks and months can be tricky because you're eating so little and you have so many restrictions, but that's not a lifelong thing. I can eat most things now and have been able to for quite awhile. I just have to watch my portion size and make sure I'm not going over my calorie range. Vacations, holidays, birthdays are no problem. (I should add that the cup thing depends on what it is. If it's something like steak, there's no way I could eat a cup of that. Too dense. But stuff like soup, vegetables, salad, yogurt, popcorn - I can eat more than a cup of that) another thing -- before I had surgery, I started paying attention to what my female co-workers ate for lunch. There were a couple who could pack away what I would have called a "normal" lunch at the time - sandwich, chips, and a cookie. Or burger, fries, and a coke. But most of them ate these lunches that I considered pretty microscopic at the time - a sandwich and a apple. Or a sandwich and some baby carrots. Or a thing of yogurt with a skinny bagel with cream cheese on it. I came to the conclusion that that's the way a lot of normal-sized women eat - and those who ate more were either blessed with great metabolism or were super active. Anyway, now I pretty much eat like those light eaters eat. I think most normal-sized women eat that way (unfortunately...) -
I moved up from liquids to purées on Friday. On liquids, I lost 11 lbs. But ever since I started purées I’ve gone up 1 lb. and it hasn’t gone back down. On Friday, all I ate all day was a quarter of an avocado and a quarter cup of oatmeal with protein powder mixed in. Yesterday, all I ate was 2 tbsp. hummus, 1 Greek yogurt cup, and 2 tbsp. PB2. Today it’s been pretty much the same: a quarter cup of oatmeal, 2 tbsp. hummus, and 2 tbsp. PB2. How is it that I’ve stopped losing weight on this little food? I just don’t see how it’s possible. I can understand that on the first day maybe my body just decided to hang tightly onto every calorie because it’s been starving, but I haven’t had more than 300-400 calories a day since I started purées and it doesn’t make sense to me how I’m not losing weight. Has this happened to anyone else? I’m becoming more than a little afraid to eat.
