  1. So I've stalled for almost 2 weeks and of course I've read the embrace the stall threads etc. Recently I watched vlogs on YouTube with people who stalled and then as their vlogs continue they all lose respectable amounts of weight. My question is this, it seems that when faced with the stall almost everyone tried different strategies to "break" the stall like going all Atkins or keto, some began working out furiously and others increased their calorie intake... Do you think there is a strategy or is it merely following whatever guide and being patient? It seems like the answer is the latter and all the other stuff is just busy work and distractions. Your thoughts? HW 341 lbs 07/19/16 - 298 lbs 08/09/16 DOS - 286 lbs CW 269 lbs
  2. My journey started about 9 years ago with a Realize Lap Band in June of 2009. I initially had great success with a 50lb weight loss (half of my goal) which occurred over the first few months post surgery. Then I figured out how to "trick" my band with dense sweet calories and my weight loss stalled but I didn't really gain back any. Fast forward 4 years and I had a couple of scares where a piece of meat got stuck in my stoma, followed by a move to a new city and state. After the last incident where I had a blockage emergency, I had my band unfilled. That was 5 years ago... I've since gained 1/2 of the weight back that I had lost... I tried multiple other diet plans and actually did have success with Keto but it simply is not sustainable for me. A year ago I made an appointment with the bariatric center but canceled it hoping to give Keto another try. Here I am a year and 10 more pounds later... SO, today I called and made an appointment. The soonest they could give me was two months from now which is kind of disappointing. My experience with KETO has really helped get my sugar cravings under control, unfortunately my age (59) and metabolism has my body at it's preferred weight set point. I'm not really sure of what to expect going forward. If any of you have had long lapses in your band I would appreciate some insight. Thanks, Vicki

    I need help!

Just to clarify - If you are truly experiencing what seems to be clinical depression then it is important address your mental health and to see a therapist. Maybe the same one that helped get you approval for WLS? Maybe though you use "depressed" to express your disappointment in the amount of weight. Which is fine, I'm not scolding you for that at all. Get out your preop Before pictures from when you were 300 pounds. Remember how far you've come and use that as inspiration as you start a new diet or fitness regimen. Pouch resets, Keto, Intermittant Fasting... maybe joining Weight Watchers or Noom - have a specific game plan to follow and not just a generalized "Im going to eat better" mentality.
  4. I’m sure that’s part of the case too, but I know I’m very restricted to fats (utilize my Nuts minimum) and not a keto diet. Perhaps, many of us don’t have enough fats in our program
  5. What’s that? I’m not doing Keto

Why do people bash weight loss surgery?

@@Madea61 it did for me. I will admit, I was never on insulin and controlled with pills. I could control my sugar well eating keto, before surgery but it was too hard to maintain and I still had to watch portions. It is a lot easier to eat properly with the sleeve.

    hair loss

My loss has slowed but I’m not complaining. It’s still going down though. The main thing for me is the fact that I know my body is healthy; the whole reason for me to get the surgery. Not for vanity, although it’s an added bonus. I’m at against keto anything and for sure anything high animal proteins after reading how our bodies react to them in long term. This is not a ploy to scare ya, but I hope you’d be open to the science behind how your body works. The western diet hides these truths because they’re in the money making business. If you are interested, read Proteinaholics by bariatric surgeon Dr garth Davis. It’s really amazing. Science and sources and it’s easy to understand.

    Watermelon

It didn't affect anything for me and at the time it was in season. My Bariatric team didn't agree with the keto and wanted us to have veggies and fruits in our diets, they said keto would mess with our metabolism later on when we did eat those things later. Everyone has different views I chose to go with the Drs. and nutritionist for my plan.

    Long term success

I totally get that fear - I was self pay too and I think we just put extra pressure on ourselves not to 'waste' money on something that doesn't have a decent chance of success. I'm only 3.5 months post op but I am certain that this surgery was a good investment in my future health. It's up to me whether that investment pays dividends in the long run. I wish you all the best on your journey - stay here and you'll get so much good advice and wisdom. And FWIW - I know I'm not long enough post op to answer your original question, but my partner lost about 50lbs some years back on keto and maintains on keto - we eat meat at most meals every single day - all the meats! I just eat about 1/4 of what he does at a sitting these days. 😎
  10. Awesome! I’m dying at the licking of the pepperoni though! [emoji23] Lets see, I’m on day 6 now. You’re a lucky duck that you have so short a pre-op diet and I am jealous! I messed up on day four and had a tiny bit of shredded boiled chicken. Ugh! I thought that little bit would be ok since most people are doing a version of the keto diet. WRONG! I got soooo nauseous the whole next day! I guess after even just 3 days of all Optifast and jello solid “regular” food messed me up. But let me tell you, feeling like crap that whole next day sure made me not want to cheat EVER AGAIN! But, it also freaked me out because how am I going to feel on day 15 when I have some cream soup or pudding? Will everything normal make me feel gross? I was freaking out anyway because I’ve never had surgery and the anesthesia part is scary. Now I’m getting worried about all kinds of stuff! Eek! Tomorrow is my endoscopy so I guess I’ll get a taste of anesthesia then. How are you doing so far? What diet does your surgeon have you on? HW: 311 CW: 258 SW: We’ll see on May 10! First goal weight: 191 lbs Second goal weight: 159 lbs Goal weight: 142 lbs 5’6” 34 yo female in NC
  11. First off,, Congratulations on your amazing numbers I can't imagine the pride you must feel.. I can see myself doing much of the same things you are doing. Have you found any good books about the keto diet? I would like to learn as much as I possibly can before I have to start eating solid foods again. TIA - Bear

    Trying NOT to fear fat??

Well this is weird to me, since I lost most of my weight eating Keto, high fat, and basically no carbs. Your body needs good fats, you have no biological need for carbs. If you are a female and you want young healthy looking skin, you need fat in your diet. There is a reason I look 10 to 12 years younger than I am. FAT. So you basically eat just pure protein each day? What are your macros like, on a normal day? She talks a lot about diet here, don't be mislead by the title.

    Keto

There are a lot of reasons to avoid the keto fad. You are already going to be in a keto like state after surgery. As you break down the fat so quickly, you will produce lots of ketones. Fat malabsorption is not unusual after WLS. Eating even more fat is not going to be helpful and a lot of it will just pass through. Fat is not going to give you the nutrition you need in the way of vitamins, minerals, and phytonurtients. It's basically just a lot of calories that you don't need and most likely can't even utilize. Consuming a lot of meat is not even healthy and contributes to a host of other health problems down the road. After WLS, you have 3 immediate goals: Water, protein, and vitamins. As the diet advances, it is still water, protein, and vitamins, but in the form of more whole foods. Getting in a lot of fruits, greens, veggies is the best way to get phytonutrients and vitamins for lifetime health. Every bite you take after WLS should be as nutrient dense as possible and have a purpose for promoting your lifelong health. HIgh meat and high fat does not do that.

    Keto

Ok so I’m not new to this. I am 10 months post op and have for some reason stopped losing weight no matter what I do (this is for over a month already) I realized that the way I’m eating is helping me maintain but I still need to lose about 30-40 lbs so I want to try keto- not for my whole life- just to do a 60 day thing or something just to get my body moving again. This is not a lifestyle change or anything like that....

    Feeling defeated

couple things to remember: 1. you are only 33 days out. 2. The "keto diet" is a high fat, moderate protein, and low carb diet. It usually consists of 75% fats, 20% protein and only 5% carb. Even though you are eating smaller portions the fat is too high. 3. A baratric diet focuses on smaller portions, high protein, low fat, and low carbs! The fat you are consuming in a Keto diet 33 days out is likely the culprit. I would stick to the meal plan that should have been outlined for you after your surgery. I am over a year out and lost 100+ pounds after my surgery w/in the first year. I did think (after talking to my dietician) that I could also try to go back on the Keto diet. I gained weight 10 lbs before I stopped that cold in its tracks and focused on my portions and eating right foods. I am almost lost the weight I gained thinking the keto diet would work for me now. I had done it before making my decision to have gastric sleeve and lost 75 lbs in a short period of time. But it came back on and then some once I stopped eating Keto.

Anybody tried keto post ds / loop ds?
  17. It only takes a few hours for the stomach to be empty for surgery, which is why most surgeries, including GI procedures, have one stop eating after midnight or some such time, sometimes they may restrict one to clear liquids for a few hours before that, but otherwise it is similar to what one needs to do for an EGD. The shrinking the liver thing is something that is debated amongst the surgeons, as to how much improvement can actually be achieved with a week or two of dieting, but to the extent that it is therapeutic, it is the low carb/keto thing that has the beneficial effect; the liquid only diet that some programs impose is of questionable value in that regard as many programs don't impose any diet at all other than the standard day or night before thing. A couple surgeons I know specifically don't want their patients fasting for weeks ahead of time as they want them as strong and healthy as possible going into surgery - a lot of different philosophies and experiences out there that lead to these varying practices. There may be other reasons for the different pre-op protocols (other than, hopefully, "that's the way we've always done it") so it's best to follow your surgeon't plan even if it isn't fully explained
  18. I didn’t know the liquid pre op diet had anything to do with Keto. I’ve been in ketosis since a few days after I started seeing the dietician but I still have to do a liquid diet for 7 days prior to surgery. I do think any preoperative diet is to help shrink the liver of fat but I also think the liquid diet helps prepare and empty the stomach for surgery. Doesn’t that make sense? It may also depend on how much weight they hope you can lose before anesthesia. I don’t know! It is confusing though. All the veterans always say follow YOUR surgeons plan. Good luck!

    Pre-op doubts

I am an advocate of finding the food choices & way of eating that works for you. There isn’t just one totally correct way to eat eat. It may be vegetarian or meat focussed or Aitken or vegan or keto, intermittent fasting or frequent eating, etc. or include aspects of a number of eating styles. The only thing you can trust will work for everyone is portion control - eat more than you need you’ll gain weight. Once you get to maintenance you can really embrace your new way of eating but you could start to incorporate aspects while losing as long as you’re still meeting your plan’s requirements & expectations. Have regular conversations with your nutritionalist & surgeon to discuss what you could start introducing & when. Your regular blood work will influence their advice & recommendations. You may (or may not) have to make adjustments to your weight loss plan & future eating style because of your personal physiological needs. Some may be pre existing, some may arise because of the surgery or be discovered as a result of all the additional medical tests & monitoring. I’ve never been great with too fatty or too oily food. I was low fat while losing but added some more good fats from goal. I was low carb while losing too & then added some whole & multi grains carbs. Since my sleeve, rice, bread & pasta sit like lumps in my tummy so I still don’t eat them. Protein has become even more important to me since I had my gall removed 4 months ago as I don’t absorb it properly anymore. I’m a carnivore but include vegetarian meals occasionally. 40+yrs of fasting & skipping meals killed my metabolism. I feed my much faster metabolism now - 3 meals & 3 or 4 snacks a day. These things influenced how I chose to eat now & it’s been working for me. Your enthusiasm for researching & adopting a new way of eating & making the changes to take the best advantage of your surgery is fantastic. I hope it motivates others starting the process too. Good luck.

Looking for a good Protein Bar

There are many different artificial sweeteners, and some of them can have side effects. I looked at the ingredients in the Pure Protein bars, and they are sweetened with maltitol, which is notorious for causing digestive discomfort. You may be able to eat protein bars that use different sweeteners without those digestive side effects. Here's a video with some good info on different types of artificial sweeteners: And here's a good article summarizing the different types of artificial sweeteners: https://www.sweetashoney.co/the-best-keto-friendly-sweeteners/ My personal favorite protein bars are Built Bars (which are sweetened with erythritol). I think they taste better than candy bars!

    Snacks

Hi Arabesque ir is definitely very different from location to location because you’re from another country and the food references are for items that I have not even heard of :). As I mentioned in another post the difference from dr to dr can be HUGE as to the amount of care you receive, the amount of post surgery guidance and what is expected of patients. Some patients have very detailed instructions and menus while some of us get very little information. I have noticed that some people are convinced that carbs are no longer allowed, some are fine with them. My dr doesn’t seem to have a problem with them although they want you to get your protein in then veg and then if room allow carbs. I think that carbs, while not ideal, aren’t the devil. I also believe that if you’re eating a total of less than 4 oz per meal (my dr literally gives you a 4 oz measure cup and says this is what you do for all meals, the cup is imprinted with the words “measure for success”) that as long as you stick to food instead of junk you will probably be fine. Yes, make sure you get the protein but most foods aren’t that calorie dense. I found a TikTok person who is a bariatric patient who has videos specifically for snacks for low carb keto diet. I think we all have to do our research and find what works for our bodies and lifestyles.

    Why liquids only?

Most of the people here are instructed to do liquids only in the weeks leading up to their surgery, myself included. Also the hallmark of a Keto diet is that it is low carb, high fat. Fat is also something that I was instructed to minimize in my pre-op diet because the liver stores fat as well as carbs. No vegetables for me, I would kill for some steamed broccoli and sliced cucumber.

    Bypass but with keto

I'm a recovering keto bro. Whatever happens, on <600 cals a day you'll be in ketosis. Further on, after the first couple of months, I've made it my business to incorporate a little pasta, fruit etc. Why? Because the problem with keto is that it isn't forever. It can't be. And if you rely on being in the state of ketosis for health and weight loss you are doomed to fail. The reason I got this surgery is to be as normal as possible because it is only through normalcy that I can be successful long term.
  25. 30g carbs plus 63g protein equals 372 calories. This is probably a ketogenic diet, or at least borderline keto.. and you'd have to eat 4.5oz of fat a day to bring it up to 1500 calories. Half a cup of oil, spread out on 3 big salads (That's how I imagine this working). It's not a bad idea, but it's not surprising he got control of blood sugar levels.. Basically people are getting 3 salads a day with a small amount of meat on each one, a few nuts, a bunch of dressing, and a side of corn or beans at noon and night. No dairy except cheese, no fruit, no grains. I think it'd be fun for about a day... but what can you do when you have a disease? You do what you can to make it go away (or as close to "away" as possible). Kudos to the good doctor for formulating a plan to help people. And, of course, it wouldn't HAVE to be salad all the time.. an omelet in the morning, meat, potatoes, and veg at night.. doesn't sound so bad...
