    This is exactly why diets like keto and atkins don't work in the long term - it's also why so many of us have (likely) been yo-yo-ing up and down in weight our whole lives. Most people just can't quit bad foods cold turkey. Kudos to those with changed gut bacteria or other chemical changes since surgery that can, but the VAST majority of us can't. What most people need here is empathy (as mentioned by creekimp) - encouragement that falling off the wagon for a meal or a day doesn't ruin anything - a helping hand to get back on track and keep up good work. As for the direction this whole thread took - first of all, the OP and original post mentioned pizza, and didn't say anything about puking it up. I don't know about you all, but I've specifically spoken at length to my surgeon about eating foods out of order or a bit ahead of schedule on the plan - his comment was, after 7-10 days, as long as you don't puke, nothing you put in your mouth (food wise, I'm sure he didn't mean nuts and bolts and ****) is going to tear/rip/create a leak in your staple line. Even if you puke, it's rare, but possible to create a leak. Based on that, I don't think anyone here should be jumping on people and claim it's a medical thing. I think all of us are scared that if we eat too much, eat the wrong thing, gain a pound one week, we're suddenly fucked and we've ruined our surgery. What we need is a community that supports people that post about stuff like this with encouraging words and helpful tips on how to get back on track. NOT pious posts like those from jess9395 and Kate. Seahawks dude should at least wait until he's post op to post opinions or criticisms, even then, see my comments on pious posts... Chill out, grow up, and be nice - try to legitimately help people. It really shouldn't be this hard.

    Failing already

    Have you tried cutting way back on carbs? Maybe even doing an Atkins type diet with little to no carbs? I feel like it will be much easier to lose weight post op when we are not so hungry. Keep in mind that the more you lose pre op, the safer surgery will be for you. I have done many Atkins type diets. The good thing about eating all protein is that you can lose weight without being hungry. That has always been key for me to be successful. It is much easier to eat the wrong foods (carbs) when you are hungry. Plus, it would be a good idea to cut way down on carbs now since you will not be eating many post op. Could help lessen severity of "keto flu" which is what most people feel with sudden carb withdrawal. Hope that helped and good luck!

    I think this is great, but I also think that you're in the minority for those of us that are fat or were fat. I think it's also interesting that some people who CAN avoid 'trigger' foods for life seem to assume that it's that way for everyone. This assumption leads to a lot of negativity on forums and FB pages (at least from what I've seen) I'm not criticizing you or trying to get contentious - it's just what I notice. I joined this FB page for sleeve/bypass people to (supposedly) share recipes and stuff like that. The lady that ran it (also conveniently had a web store to sell shakes and stuff on) was 10 years out (bypass) and still lived a <20 carb keto lifestyle, maintained a 200lb weight loss, etc. I think the admins were all friends of hers, too. Holy **** was that a sanctimonious crew - one would think that it was some kind of religion where anything with carbs was essentially satan himself. The admins and the people who wanted to be like the admins would totally jump on people's **** when they admitted to having a cookie, or even suggested substituting something in a shake or recipe - in one post, some lady got reamed for saying she put half a banana in her daily shake. I left the group after a couple of days. Point being - some things will change for some people, but the same thing won't change for all of the people. I think we should all take great care to qualify any advice we give on nutrition and eating here - make it very clear that what you're talking about works for you, maybe not the OP. Oh, and be nice and supportive too.

    Preop and Keto

    Low carb/keto diets can really help shed the pounds. They can be difficult to do if you're a carb lover (like me). Many of us had to do 2 weeks of a liquid diet before surgery and it's essentially a low carb diet too. The upside is that you can drop a decent amount of weight in a short period of time. Downsides can be decreased energy, bad taste in your mouth and/or bad breath, and being hangry at times...lol.
  5. Hello all, I am only a few months into my preop 6 month required diet. I don't have much of a diet to follow. I have cut out sodas and sweets. I have been eating more veggies and less carbs. My question is, I've only lost 2lbs. I wanted to lose some on my own before wls to just help myself get further ahead I guess. I've seen some people doing a Keto type diet after they have wls. Has anyone done it before surgery and seen any benefits? Also, I have a work trip in March, a few months before my surgery, and I have to fly! I've never flown and would like to lose a few before I have to squeeze into a seat on a plane.
  6. Yes, similar type of rash, but it Was on my arm and down my side. I think it was a Keto rash, it stopped getting worse and is now healing, but was pretty itchy and annoying for a couple of days. Is your tongue white? That's common too with Ketosis.

I am just in the initial stages for pre op my surgeon appointment is on Tuesday but as I go grocery shopping I want to fill my fridge with the pre op diet foods, and have read most doctors diet pre surgery is keto. I have been doing the whole30 and have lost 30 pounds in the past 3 months and can transition to keto if that's what I'm going to be put on, in my research I'm seeing that keto is listed as the worst diet of 2017 and whole 30 was right with it. My bariatric may require 3 months dietician, exercise and weight loss. My insurance doesn't, Just failed attempts and need. I'm curious about keto diet recommendations, how much weight are you suppose to lose before surgery? How many carbs do you eat to be in ketosis, how do deal with the side effects? Thank you
  9. At around 3 months post op, i began having salty carb cravings, Cheez-its, or Triscuits, etc. Dry, carb, salty is what i really wanted! When I found myself at the store buying a big box of Cheez-Itz, I realized I needed to change something. So I did some reading and research, and knowing that keto is forever, not just to get to a goal, this was a bigger jump for me somehow. But I had all that surgery and all, so why not go for the gold?? I've recently downloaded 4 cookbooks that use 5 ingredients, contain 5 carbs to make all of the keto recipes, Bfast, Lunch, Dinner, and Dessert (In Five <-- for those google searchers). These aren't bariatric geared, so I have to pay attention to the end of day totals and see if i'm lacking in any protein areas. LOTS of fun foods in there, incorporating cream and cheese and eggs into a lot, but at the same time, not having to eat eggs and bacon every morning for bfast. I've not used those ketostix, but I'm sure as this goes along, I'll want to keep up with that. I'm still just starting out. This morning I am eating a Maple Pecan Porridge, made with Coconut Flour and Ground Flaxseed, with Cinnamon and toasted Pecans. I has a great taste, and certainly filled me up faster than expected. And most of these recipes are made for either 2 or 4 servings. I'm making for me only, hubs is a carb man, but I usually can adjust for 2 servings so that i only have 1 leftover meal.
  10. It should def track workouts. And it would be nice if you could customize your own personal macro goals or have it do it for you based on your diet preferences. (Ex: someone following a reg bariatric diet will have different macros than someone following keto or a vegetarian etc) Reminders to enter food and workouts would be awesome too
  11. I think that depends on the person, for example my body can't stand super fatty foods anymore. But some people follow keto and it works wonders for them, but in order to enter ketosis your diet must be 70% fat, then protein and very low carbs. So it depends.
  12. Yeah, I got a pretty bad, itchy rash on the inside of my arms. A few days to maybe a week post op. I believe it was the “keto” rash. When you eat an extremely low carb diet, I’ve heard/read the first few days of it can lead to a rash. 5’6” 25 yo SW: 256 CW: 230.8 *12/04/2017*
  13. It's been very quiet here - I will break the ice by saying that I gained over over the Christmas week but have lost that plus another .5kg. I have been following a keto diet since Jan 1st to get into ketosis ASAP to start getting some weight off again. I am now in ketosis thankfully and while it's water weight that has been lost, knowing I am running on fat now is a great feeling. I loved the ketosis zone during pre and post esg - I think it has made the biggest difference in my weight loss. It's to thank for the quick weight loss at the start. I will add a piece of fruit a day down the track but will try stay on very low carb for as long as possible. The dietician has worded me up in the past regarding how fibre cancels out carbs and has a more moderate approach to carbs. I am looking forward to checking in with her again next week. Ok - now it's time for your accountability update. Remember, we are all friends here and will offer nothing but support if you have gained over the past few weeks. Mel
  14. My brother thinks he's an honorary member of the food police around me. He will see me eating a half flatout wrap with a grilled salmon patty and tomato/spinach, and ask if I should be eating the wrap...All while he is eating his salmon patty on a 200+ calorie buttered bun with mayo, two slices of cheese, no veggies, and French fries on the side. I just have to laugh. I know he cares, but it is funny nonetheless. I just pull out myFitnessPal, and show him my food stats. That usually gets him to zip it. For some reason, I keep having to tell him that I am not on a keto or other low carb diet. Oh well, he is the only one that ever comments about what I eat. Everyone else just keeps their comments/questions to themselves.

    Ketogenic Diet

    I have just restarted keto after a 1 month trial before Thanksgiving. My lap band history is that I had the surgery done about 12 years ago (Nov 2005). I lost about 60 lbs and have put about half of that back (keeping in the 200-215 lb range). I felt good at my lowest (~175). My bariatric dr. did an initial fill post surgery (winter) and I had another fill a couple of months later. I had a partial unfill 2-3 years after the 2nd fill from a nurse that was doing them in the Marysville WA area (I was about 190 lb at the time, but had a hard time keeping dense food down especially protein). She has since closed down her fill/unfill business. As I was self pay it has been difficult to find someone to do fills/unfills (I can't afford $300+ each time, probably much more now plus the price of a fluoroscope exam). I would actually like an unfill (partial or total), but am now on medicare so can't afford an unfill unless I can find someone like the nurse. My daughter who also has a band is glad she had it done (she was substantially more overweight and had many more health issues including type 2 diabetes). However, I wish that I had not had it (I only had high cholesterol, slightly high blood pressure and sleep apnea). The band has made it very difficult in social situations (eating food) and I get stressed and then it is harder to keep food down and I usually have to excuse myself and go to the restroom to BP (vomit). As far as keto, it is not really a high fat diet unless you make it one. You should be eating good fats (olive oil, avocado, some nuts, I make keto mayo with olive oil). Since I can't eat a ton of protein, I don't feel I'm getting an overabundance of saturated fat and I try to eat leaner/cleaner cuts of meat and grass fed hamburger. I don't eat much bacon, maybe once a week I'll have a slice or two. The most important parts of keto is keeping your carbs low (20 g or less my preference or typically 20-30 when trying to lose weight) and moderate levels of protein (0.8 gram per kg of ideal body weight or you can scale down as you go if using your current weight; or see https://www.livestrong.com/article/535738-how-to-determine-protein-requirements/ to determine requirements). Too much protein converts into glucose. Look up Jason Fung (one of the "diet doctors" on youtube). Dr. Jason Fung completed medical school at the University of Toronto and a fellowship in nephrology at the University of California. He founded the Intensive Dietary Management Program in Toronto that provides a unique treatment focus for type 2 diabetes and obesity. He has an enlightening book called "The Obesity Code:...". He is an advocate of the keto diet and intermittent fasting. Another good source for inspiration is youtube's "Keto Christina". She has lost over 100 lbs and is very knowledgeable. She eats a lot of Irish bacon (very lean, not much fat compared to US bacon). P.S. I had my gallbladder removed at time of lap band due to stones and my daughter needed her gallbladder removed about 6 months post lap band surgery.

    What Post-Sleeve Rules Do You Break?

    My kids are both like this. What changed my daughter's life was Pinterest, of all things. I showed her how to basically search for ingredients and find recipes for stuff we already have, and she has had a few hits and misses, but it's a fun project for her to cook food now. And lately she's given me shopping lists for ingredients for recipes she wants to try, she made a delicious black bean soup a few weeks ago in the crock pot. When I started keto, she did that with me and tried a few recipes for that, too. She is 12 and might be a better cook than me pretty soon

    August Sleevers-How are you doing??

    Thanks so much! I definitely journal daily (using MyFitnessPal), which helps me immensely. The biggest thing, though, is that I follow a keto diet: (very) low carbs, moderate protein and high fat. I've been doing that since last March and lost 43 pounds prior to surgery and all the rest through yesterday. My husband and I do this together, which is also very helpful. We are committed to a more active lifestyle as well -- we run and bike a few times during the week. To help us keep to that commitment, we work out with our charity team (Team Challenge). This means we get to see friends every week and keep moving. We're adding strength training to our routine this month. Keto is also recommended by our nutritionist (but strangely enough, our surgeon is still on the "low-fat" wagon -- we just nod when we talk to him!). Keto has been a life saver for my husband and me. Oh, I should mention that I'm still on an 800-calorie diet, but I don't watch the calories so much. I watch the carb intake, which I try and keep to less than 30g per day. You're doing great! You're very close to your goal weight, which is fantastic! 2018 is going to be your year! Good luck!

  19. I never hit my goal weight either, and I've regained since then. Not sure how much: I'm afraid to look at the scale. I hope it's only 15, but I think it might be closer to 25 or 30. I've gotten addicted to processed carbs again, so I need to go off them, but it's tough. I was near perfect on my diet for a year, but never did any exercise. I think that really prevented me from reaching my goal. I'm feeting very motivated to exercise now; in fact, I'm going tomorrow to get a gym membership. (I do much better at exercise with a gym membership than working out at home.) I'd like to do keto because it's so effective, but since the surgery, my body really does not like it when I eat much fat. Also, there aren't a lot of protein sources I like, so I'm thinking about looking into a more plant based diet. I like the idea of fruits, vegetables, beans, string cheese, Greek yogurt, eggs, and some meat here and there. I should go back to protein shakes, but I drank so many for so long that I'm really tired of them. I think I'll start the Pound of Cure diet and see where it takes me. Anyway, good luck to you! It's tough when it seems that everyone else has been so successful, but tomorrow is another chance at success.
  20. I was sleeveed Nov. 23rd, which was a revision from Lapband that was removed in July. I did great drinking post surgery and then mushy foods. I have lost 17 pounds but have been in a stall for a week and a half. With the lap band, I had a lot of regurgitation due to a slipped band. Now with the sleeve, I will eat small portions of meat, I am usually hungry, so I am thinking I am eating quicker than I should, I have been chewing thoroughly or so I thought, but usually 10-15 minutes later, I have the need to throw-up as if I ate too much, and it does come up. How do you know when you are full and how long are you taking to eat cut up meat? I am not on normal foods and slowly and trying to add in. I noticed I am not getting in all of my liquids since adding back in some normal foods as it takes about an hour + before I can start drinking again. How do you differentiate b/w head hunger and actual hunger? I know these are newbie questions, but I think the lapband created this PTSD with the vomiting, lol. I am going to start logging my food and was thinking of trying the KETO diet too. Any thoughts, tips, recommendations would be appreciated!

  22. this sounds almost exactly what happened to me. the last time i was able to lose weight (without bariatric surgery) was in 2012. it took me almost 2 YEARS of very, very strict no-carb keto (like spoon-feeding coconut oil) with a lot of intermittent fasting to lose just 30 measly pounds. my will/discipline would not break, so my thyroid did. i woke up one day without the energy to put my socks on. i gained those 30lbs back in about a month. then kept gaining, despite being on Armour thyroid. 20lbs a year for 5 years until i was 370lbs this spring and i finally had enough and got the surgery. long story short, YES, it fixes subclinical hypothyroidism which is what it sounds like you had/have. definitely keep doing deep thyroid blood panels after the surgery, but my thyroid function was completely resolved. my last TSH test (i'm 6-mos post-op) was a 1.5. all the energy and weight loss in the world. it's funny, i asked my surgeon the same thing in our initial consultation. i was like "yes, doc, this sounds great, but my thyroid is f'ed up. will this surgery still work for me?" he didn't hesitate to say "yes. any other questions?" p.s. - i'm really sorry for all the bad fortune you've been thru lately. good lord. please do yourself a favor and get this surgery. you deserve it. p.p.s. - no, malnutrition did not cause your son's cancer. that said, find a top-notch surgeon. do not settle for anything less than the best. even if you have to pay out of pocket. a good surgeon almost ensures no complications. bad surgeon = strictures, leaks, etc.

I haven't been on in quite a while, so I thought I would check in.  My weight is down to 173, 7 pounds below goal.  I held at 175 for almost 2 months and randomly dropped 2 pounds a couple of weeks ago.  I had my year follow-up appointment, and my labs were perfect.  Once again, I know that this journey was one of the best decisions of my life, and that I never would have been successful had I not committed myself 100% to changing my relationship with food.  I still follow a keto way of eating and keep my carbs below 25g per day.  I wish everyone the best.  Happy holidays!

Like you I'm having a hard time meeting protien goals but I can sure put away some avocado. I've been keto for 2 months and it seems to be working.
