I started soft food today, still only eating chicken, but it was so good and juicy!! For some reason the blender made it so dry and I had to bbq sauce it up to make it wet lol. Anyway, What else did you eat on soft foods that is high in protein but not carbs?? Fish and eggs I know but what else?? Any suggestions??

Hi, I am a nurse and I've taken care of patients with TPN. If you have had it for any extended amount of time, the doctor should order routine bloodwork to check electrolyte and Protein levels. If they have been doing lab work, then I would feel confident that you were at an acceptable level to be taken off of it.

I'm 11 days post surgery. I'm having no problem with water, but protein shakes still fill me up. I get in maybe two protein shakes spread out over the day. About the only other thing I eat are brothy soups (just the liquid from tomato or clam chowder) and V8. Maybe 2-3 oz of soup and I feel full. The soups are nice because I can find them fairly easily at restaurants and it maintains a semblance of normalcy. I get to move on to purred food soon. I'll probably just add scrambled eggs and finely diced chicken mixed with broth or gravy. I should be able to get enough protein there to back off of the shakes a bit.

Two weeks from today! Dr E Ortiz on Feb 4
Katcloudshepherd replied to Water Nazi's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Water Nazi, What an interesting name you have on this site : ) Congratulations on your date. I wish you an routine surgery and an easy recovery. I'm glad my doc didn't limit my salad size. Maybe they're worried you'll use a lot of higher calorie dressing? When I was on my pre-op-I did the reverse of what I do now. Veggies first then protein. I also drank at least 8 oz. of water before I ate. The water and veggies filled up my stomach and then the protein kept me satiated longer. Kathleen -
I did hear from her today. Nausea and pain better controlled but struggling with the protein.

Losing my Hair!!!
onenuttynurse replied to sicilianpride85's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sorry to hear about your hair loss. I have also lost a scary amt of hair to the point that i have a very thin spot on the top of my head...I take biotin, tons of vitamins, protein up the wazooooo, and nioxin for the last year....No luck...my dermatologist said Nioxin is good at making your hair shiny and thats it...LOL....oh well i would rather be thinking i am doing something than nothing at all. I take 5000 mcg of biotin daily. All my vitamins are chewable or liquids so i am very compliant...If i have done everything I can do and it still falls out, then i will shave it and have a sexy tatoo placed on my head.....who knows...could be kind of fun......onenuttynurse -
I am in the mushies phase now and I'm doing cottage cheese, apple sauce, ricotta cheese with SF syrups, yogurt, cream of wheat, protein puddings, egg salad, crustless quiche (or so's the plan, it's in the fridge now), cream of chicken soup, cream of chicken and mushroom soup (sometimes I add more chicken to these cream of soups... just taking a can of chicken, packaged like tuna, and adding it for addtl protein) and my clear protein drinks. I'm struggling with my drinking, still!

Wow. I hope I can be down 56! 3 weeks isn't that long I guess. I'm still on soft foods so wonder if that's why. I don't always realize how long it's been since I ate I think. I don't get my protein in though. Do you feel full? That's my concern. I can eat crackers and feel like tight.

Good to know I am not alone. No I am not going regularly and I have had some problems with going to the bathroom. I usually go every 3 or 4 days and I have to take stool sofners. I stopped taking them and when I finally had to go to the bathroom it was the worst episode yet. I was in the bathroom for over an hour and the pain was horrible and I had to handle business (gross). It's been about 3 days since that and I have been taking my stool softner again and I hae gone 2 times now and it has been a lot better. I have been getting my Protein from food not shakes because I can't stand them anymore and Ithought that would help but I am still on the soft food stage so maybe after this week when I can go on all foods and I can start having salads and stuff I will go more regularly. So you think the pain is just from not going to the bathroom and getting stopped up? How come it feels better when I eat? Did yours feel better when you ate? Thanks again

You can do whatever you want to your hair. If you're going to lose some, then you're going to lose some and it doesn't matter what you do. It's not a vitamin issue, nor even a weightloss issue. It's surgery and the anesthesia. It will come back as long as you keep you're protein and vitamins up. Losing our hair isn't related to our weightloss, but growing it back is related to how healthy we keep ourselves in the process.

pre-op appointments?
Jodi_620 replied to Annie0341's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had to do: Two visits with the psych in surgeons office (one filling out psych test, one reviewing results and asking questions) Two visits with the nutritionist in surgeons office (one one-on-one visit to discuss my eating habits and one classroom style visit to go over pre-op and post op diets and discuss when and how to eat etc.) Barium Swallow Test at the Radiologist (in my opinion the worst part--that barium stuff you have to swallow sucks  but I survived it!) Blood work, EKG and Sugical Release with family doctor (all in one visit) Sleep study was optional--I didn't have any symptoms of apnea so I didnt' do it. Then a pre-op visit with the surgeon a week before surgery where he reviewed the results of all the above and discussed details of the upcoming surgery. -
I know, I know...dont get hung up on the scale....BUT I'm about 6 weeks out & last Saturday I weighed 283 & today I weigh 285. I am averaging 5-600 cals a day. And I don't have a TOM. What the.... Maybe it's what I'm eating? Here's an average day. I'm not big on variety yet cuz my sleeve is picky....realllly picky! Also not a big eater...just can't do 6 meals a day. Am. SF vanilla latte w/ 2% milk. Takes all morning to drink lunch. 1/6 of a flat out whole wheat wrap w/ 2 tblspn of cram cheese & 2 oz of smoked salmon Snack. Protein shake w/ 30 g protein...can only stomach a little over 2/3 of it dinner is the same as lunch. Well, thoughts??

Are you keeping an actual food journal to log the breakdown of your calories/fats/carbs/protein? Sounds like you are getting in an OK amount of Protein, but might need more. At 6 weeks you should be aiming to get 80-90g at a minimum. And it's good if you can get half of that in before mid-day, rather than lumping it all in the afternoon. If you can, mix up what you're eating rather than eating the same thing more than twice a day. Are you logging your fluids as well, 64oz or more per day? How much are you exercising? It might be time to bump it up a little, like 10% more. More than likely it's just a stall. The human body is not a perfectly tuned machine and can have it's quirks. Be patient, I'm sure it will break soon!!
-
I think about 95% of people some sort of stall. I never had a true stall (14 days without an ounce lost), but the closer I got to goal, my loss slowed down. I didn't experience a stall for the first 6 months, and then I was a few pounds from goal and hit a 10 day stall, then BAM dropped those pounds plus 2 to drop me below goal. If you follow your post-op dietary guidelines, push Protein and fluids, the weight loss will continue, plus working out, building muscle mass can slow down your loss, but you'll be losing inches. A pound is a pound be it a pound of fat or muscle. Fat is lumpy and takes up space, muscle mass is lean, and takes up less space in our bodies so when we build muscle, it burns the fat, and we trim down even though the scale may not be moving. I recommend taking your measurements at your neck, breasts/chest, upper arms, upper thighs, waist, hips and calves. Your clothes might fit differently even if the scale isn't moving much because you're muscles are growing, and the lumpy, bumpy fat is melting away. Mentally prepare for a stall by realizing that your body can not continue to lose a pound a day for a year. Take your measurements, and document your progress in pictures so you can physically see the changes. If you hit a stall, analyze your intake and make sure you're staying on course food wise. Stalls happen, the rapid weight loss can't last forever, but you can continue to lose at a good rate by sticking to the rules. I dropped 115lbs in 6.5 months so it's possible to lose all your weight, and keep a steady loss going.

Motts makes these applesauce pouch things that you can eat w/o a spoon. Also baby food pouch things. Pre-mixed Protein Shakes. banana (take tiny bites and smoosh it in your mouth). Stop at KFC and get mashed potatoes. A Campbell's "Soup at Hand". I've been on mushies 2 days ... can you tell I've given this some thought?
-
Had my first 'oops' today and I'm paying for it!! I am about 3 weeks post op, still on mushies, and ate lunch at 11:00. After work my husband picked me up and we went car shopping. I missed my afternoon snack and we didn't get done at the car dealers until after 7, home until 8:30. I was SO hungry. Overly hungry. My head is POUNDING. I came home and tried to eat slowly some quick protein but it was too late, I was shakey and still can't shake the headache. Any ideas for portable snacks when still on mushies?

Had VSG to RNY Monday the 12th
SleeveDreamer posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well this is my journey from Monday the 12th. Went in for hiatial hernia repair and RNY because my acid was totally out of contol. When the anesthesiologist inserted his tube, it was discovered that I had a very thin area of scar tissue that was completely iniulated from my severe acid. So my wonderful surgeon had to repair that first before he could do the bypass. Because of this it wasn't necessart for him to do the hiatial hernia repair. So the bypass part went as planned. Because of this repair, I could not start liquids on Tuesday. I had to have an upper gi xray to make sure there was no leak. There wasn't, but he still wanted to be extra cautious because of the delicate repair. So I was only allowed ice swabs all day Tuesday and was on IV. Yesterday, Wednesday, I was finally allowed ice chips, but still on IV. Today, Thursday, I am still on IV, but was allowed broth. I am not having any problems with the broth, so I may be able to go home tomorrow. I live 50 miles away, so like I said he is being cautious. Originally, I was to start liquids Tuesday through next Monday, adding protein drinks tomorrow. Of course that's when I was supposed to go home today. So now I will be on the clear liquids longer and probably not add protein til mid week. Otherwise, I feel great. I have never had any pain or needed to take pain meds. I am up walking four times a day with no problem. I do have a drain this time too, and that will be until my post op next Thursday. I have never been nauseated. I am just glad I have an excellent surgeon who saved my life agin. If this would have gone unnoticed, it most likely would hav ruptured and I would be in deep doo doo with infection throughout my entire body. I will update tomorrow! Wish I would have gone this route rather than VSG 5 1/2 years ago! -
Yeah I can... I had the same types of things happen to me... I figured out that I had become lactose intolerant, so any protein drinks I mixed with milk made me sick as could be. The same went for the Greek yogurt I was eating in the morning as well. Maybe try quiting milk products for a day and see how that does. Good luck.

Is Carbs Is Fresh Food Bad For You Also?
Threetimesacharm replied to SleeveShelly's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
fruits are naturally high in sugar. I wouldn't consume too much fruit in the beginning stick with your protein and veggies. -

I actually mix my one scoop of protein in my smoothie. -
Thanks! I have been to my surgeon 3 times this week and the nutritionist. I hvent been able to keep protein shakes down and even water is starting to become hard to keep down. I am worried about dehydration setting in before my tests Monday

It's been a while since I was in that stage but best I can remember I sipped broth, water and premier protein shakes, and then once I was cleared for eggs I ate scrambled eggs.
