to gain five pounds of true weight, you would have to eat 17,500 calories over and above what your body needs. So it's definitely water weight. unsweetened cocoa powder shouldn't be an issue. A tablespoon of that is something like 15 calories, and it's loaded with antioxidants. The brown sugar is problematic, though, esp if you're doing Keto. Swerve makes a great brown sugar alternative, if your body is OK with artificial sweeteners.

I really messed up on pre diet
Gundy replied to Oceanlove's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey Oceanlove! Hang in there! If you can’t follow the strict liquid diet, at least get into Ketosis with a strict Keto diet. It will shrink your liver and help you drop weight. Stop all carbs right now! -
Nope, I see no benefit in going keto or low carb. I'm more of an IF person I guess.

2 yrs post op - recent gain

Hope other members have better advice than mine. Trying something new may get the scale to move.. Some change diet plans to keto, intermittent fasting, paleo, vegan etc... It's easy to go off track a bit. I had to clean up my diet and find my discipline. I went back to basics. logging food, exercise and hydrating. I played with my calories and macros to find where my body loses weight again. Wishing you the best in finding what works, Jenn -
I purchased some keto cookbooks like southern keto by Natasha and keto comfort food. I made the soups and pureed them down. I had no issue. This was closer to my soft food stage though.

The macros for post wls diet and keto are different. For post wls surgery, the dominant macro is protein. The moderate macro is fat and minimal macro is carbs. For Keto diet, the dominant macro is fats, the moderate macro is protein and the minimal macro is carbs. You have to stick to the macros in order to stay in ketosis. It can be a slippery slope. I think a lot of people call "low carb" diet keto. They're not the same. You can do a low carb diet, by only changing the amount of carbs. If you do keto, you have to change your protein and fat macros as well. Keto isn't really sustainable, that's why it's often considered a fad diet. It's often used for short periods, not really long term. Keto when done long term can eventually do harm to your metabolism, cause kidney stones and other issues. -
Why is keto considered a fad diet but the bariatric diet is considered appropriate to follow? For example, my surgeon said to get 60-80g of protein per day, less than 50 carbs per day, and less than 50 fats per day. Keto is high protein, low carb, and higher healthy fats (think mct oil, avocado, not necessarily eggs and bacon). Both are also low/no sugar and require you to eat at a calorie deficit (they just specify how much since calories are not the main concern for either one). Both also require some exercise, based on your ability. The ONLY difference is the fat content. They are virtually the same otherwise, yet one is considered a fad and the other is acceptable. Why? If one can stick to the bariatric diet, why is it assumed they couldn't stick to keto?

Keto is HIGH fat, low carbs and moderate protein. Bariatric is HIGH protein, and from there depends on the surgery team. Some are low carb/sugar low fat. Others are a BALANCED low fat/low sugar diet. Mine is VERY balanced, I have never heard anyone on my team tell us we can't have carbs. Through all the classes, appointments and Nutritionists follow ups. They all say the same thing, balanced diet while making sure we get our protein first and then veggies, if you want or have "room" then have the carb. Understand this is only my opinion: I do not think it is realistic to think someone is going to stay "keto" or "extremely low carb" for the rest of their life. Isn't that how we all YO-YO? By doing extreme diets that we realistically cannot maintain long term? I have lost 100+ lbs 4 different times. (I know, ridiculous) The last time I even had skin removal surgery and still gained it back because eating chicken and broccoli every single day was not realistic! This is what convinced me to finally have WLS. I went through the classes for pre-op still hesitant to have WLS and just figured what do I have to loose by learning more about it in a formal manor. I learned that while some things we might not be able to eat, there was really not the restriction of foods like I heard by travel of words. Even on my worst days, I haven't been even able to eat more than 1200 calories. it really is the restriction of capacity that makes the HUGE difference from a diet to WLS. Eating healthy (most of the time) was never a problem for me. My problem was ALWAYS being hungry, eating 3 servings of chicken rather than 1. Eating 3/4 slices of pizza rather than a half a of slice without eating the outside crust. Again, my opinion and what works for me may not work for you or the next person. I think we all have to figure out what works for us and go from there. Everyone is so different and every bariatric team/center is just as different. I had this surgery so I can eat like a normal person and not like a 400 lb person. I am almost 6 months post op and when I eat around people, rarely does anyone notice my diet being different than their own. I think maybe 3 times someone (who doesn't know I had WLS) has commented about what I was eating. You do you girl, work with your team. Find out what works best for you and run with it! Modify it as you go if needed. We are all on the a different version of the same journey. We got this!! (Sorry for my long post, I got carried away) -
Severe Headache after starting pre-op diet
FluffyChix replied to SleeveinIL's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
Probably not. 1 tsp of MOM = 425mg of magnesium (from memory). And if you're already on 100g or less for the last 3 months, it shouldn't be a long trip for you. I'd just keep on keepin on, do your bouillon, and drink your water! Most of the keto flu symptoms are really symptoms of dehydration per the keto docs. -
Suggestions and Help
Sleeve1stFitNext replied to AmandaWho's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am over 3 months out. So my schedule is different and I do Keto Diet for myself. My day consist of the following: Breakfast - Shake or 2 egg Whites (boiled or scrambled) with 2 pieces of turkey bacon. Or a lettuce BLT wrap (turkey bacon of course and lite mayo). Snack 1 - Turkey Salad (Romaine Lettuce, 2 oz of turkey and Slice Tomato). I also make my own salad dressing. Lunch - Stuffed green Bell pepper or diced chicken with guacamole, mozzarella cheese and some sour cream. Snack 2 - Protein Bar Dinner - Whatever was left over from Lunch lol. Snack 3 - 14 Olives and 1 pickle. I love my Olives and Pickles. My suggestion is try Pinterest. Type in "Low Carb or Keto Diet Recipes". You will find a lot of interesting recipes to try. I hope this helps. This is just a limited list. Each week is different. -

See, what you all are saying makes sense, but my nutritionist said I will be eating the bariatric diet for the rest of my life. That's why I was so shocked that she said keto is a fad diet but the bariatric diet is ok. I love keto. My body responds well to it. I have friends that have been on it for years and are doing really well. I lost 100 pounds on it. But I couldn't keep it off no matter how strict I was with it. With the bariatric diet, I was really struggling because my body doesn't do well with low fat. Higher fat with low carbs and high protein seems to work wonders for me. I tend to stay around 70-80 fats per day, 25-35 carbs per day, 70-90g of protein per day, and 1050 - 1200 calories per day (1200 if I work out that day, less if I don't). I may need to call my nutritionist again, because if keto and the bariatric diet both aren't meant to be followed for life, I need to see why she said it would and what I'm supposed to do once I hit my maintenance weight (nowhere near that yet). -
Hi, I was sleeved in 2014. My high weight was 311, I got down to 165 and now I am 205. BMI is 32. I started to take progesterone for perimenopause two years ago and I have been gaining since then. My sleeve has stretched out a lot in five years. Does anyone know what the requirements are for surgeons and insurance companies to get overstitch? I can't find anything online, it is so vague. Ideally I would like to be at 175-180. Anything under that and I look gaunt. I have tried the pouch test and keto and monitoring my calories and protein but nothing really helps. I'm afraid the further I get into menopause the worse this is going to get. Thanks in advance.

Post RNY weight regain, is the keto diet an alternative?
CloudNL posted a topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
Hello! I am new here and apologize if this topic is already talked about. I had my GB RNY in 2005, I lost all my extra weight and was at my lower at 55 kg, well that was nice but still too low. As we all did I gained a bit, 58 kg and was stable for 9.5 years but the last 1.5 I am regaining it again, and I am very depressed. I have a personal trainer, walk every day, and eat healthy... so lately I am reading about the Keto diet, I am curious but afraid to gain even more weight. Does anyone here have experience with that diet? -
Do you still identify as a wls patient?

Gosh, at 6 years out I forget I had WLS. I had put on 30 lbs by drinking Starbucks Frapps. I was so angry at my gain. I had been totally embarrassed to see my primary doctor and did not want to be weighed. I finally started eating Keto and I love it. My weigh is falling off again. So now I remind myself why I had WLS and eat the keto way. Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Trader Joe's bariatric-friendly products?
BigSue replied to BigSue's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm surprised I didn't get very many responses about this, but I guess if you don't live in the middle of nowhere, a trip to Trader Joe's is not a big event 😀. I found some product recommendations on keto web sites and YouTube videos. Here's my haul: They didn't have several of the items on my list, and there were a few things I didn't buy because they seemed way overpriced, but here's what I got (some of it is just general grocery items just to save me a trip to another store): Meat Individually frozen boneless skinless chicken thighs ($7.99) Ground chicken ($3.79) Ground turkey ($2.99) Pork tenderloin ($4.15) Chile lime chicken burgers ($3.69) Chicken sausage ($3.99) Produce Spaghetti squash ($2.99) Organic romaine bagged salad ($2.69) Heavenly tomatoes ($2.79) Head of garlic ($.49) Organic ginger ($1.79) Frozen Frozen green beans ($1.99) Frozen asparagus ($2.99) Frozen raspberries ($2.49) Pantry Avocado oil ($5.99) Kalamata olive oil ($8.99) Sesame oil ($2.99) Rice vinegar ($1.99) Salsa Autentica ($1.99) Salsa Verde ($1.99) Sundried tomatoes ($1.99) Masala simmer sauce ($2.69) Almond flour ($7.49) Snacks Chomps jerky ($1.69) Quest Hero bar ($1.99) Power Crunch bar ($1.49) Freeze-dried raspberries ($3.99) Refrigerated Plain nonfat Greek yogurt ($.99) Green goddess salad dressing ($3.99) Spicy cashew salad dressing ($3.99) I've only tried a few of these items so far. I love the green goddess salad dressing; it's only 10 calories per tablespoon and surprisingly tasty (I actually licked the bowl when I finished my salad). Sadly, it's perishable and only has about a month shelf-life in the fridge. Haven't tried the spicy cashew dressing yet, but online reviewers love it. I like the chicken burgers, but they'd be better on a nice, fluffy bun. I felt so weird buying all healthy stuff and no junk food! If I had made this trip a year ago, I would have been all over the delicious-looking baked goods and the snacks and desserts stacked above the freezer aisle. -
It will pass. My surgeon called the first week pre op diet as hell week. I was so glad I only had to do keto but I have friends who could only have three meals a day: three shakes or two shakes plus one meal. You’re fortunate you are on 4 shakes + a meal. A lot of the effects you are experiencing are ketosis - fat burning. Plus you’re experiencing some withdrawals. You’ve reduced your calorie intake so until your body get used to it you will feel a little weak. The weakness will continue post surgery though too.

I suspect that you are headed toward revision, given your lifelong experience with this, but there are always things that should be tried before going for surgical solution. Given your history, I suspect that you have tried most of the various tricks and treatments for GERD, such as sleeping with head elevated, not eating X hours before bedtime, etc. There are some books out there by MDs who specialize in the problem that may give some more insight. One common thread seems to be that dietary fat may be contributory to the problem, so your keto efforts may be working against you if that is the case (OTH it may have little to do with it and is just a throwback to the days when low fat diets would fix anything, much as low carb diets are today's universal solution.) It may be worth a try to shift your dietary balance for a while and see if it has any effect on you, There are also some foods that supposedly help or hinder the functioning of the lower esophageal sphincter, and likewise some medications that target it, so those are things to explore. Given your history, I assume that shifting meds may have been discussed - transitioning from PPI to H2 inhibitors such as Zantac or Pepcid - they are generally somewhat less effective but generally preferable from the long term use perspective. Given that you are still seeing reflux evidence in the EGD even on the PPI, it is unlikely to make a significant difference as symptomatic relief doesn't necessarily mean that the problem doesn't still exist and is doing damage, but it is something else worth considering. Historical curiousity - back in the dark ages, vagotomies were performed, severing part of the vagus nerve to disable some of the protein pump ports as a chronic reflux treatment; this was obsoleted by the introduction of PPIs, but maybe it's time to reintroduce the "old school". Good luck in working through this.....

I’ve had a few ask me but I just tell them I did keto/low carb, which is basically the truth. I didn’t tell anyone but family. -
Thanks for the feedback! I haven't noticed the BO, but my urine has a very different smell too (sorry TMI, but related). I hadn't connected that until you mentioned the BO, but it started with pre-op diet also. Hmmm, very interesting. FamilyGirl, What are Keto-sticks and how do you get them? Can you tell me more about them. please?

50 lbs down... I'm in Onederland!
SassyScienceNerd posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
33 since surgery, the rest was before that. This pic was before I started keto and my pre-op. I've been a little bit stalled, but I'm not sweating it too hard. I'm taking my surfboard out this weekend which is a big time calorie burner for me. So I don't think I'll be stalled for long. ETA: I was never able to fit in those pub chairs before (on the right). Whenever we would go to that court bar, I had to stand the whole time and just act like I didn't feel like sitting to save myself from being embarrassed. It feels really good to not have hips the size of a Chevy tailgate anymore. -
we are all familiar with prepared meal delivery services like Blue Apron, Plated, Peached Dish, etc. but this one seems to take the cake in terms of optimally healthy, whole-food, paleo/keto food. it's called Factor 75. https://www.factor75.com/nutrition anyone try this yet? i know all of these services are pretty expensive, but for us bariatric patients with smaller eating capacities, i bet one meal could serve as two (lunch and dinner). the meals seem to be about 400-500 calories each and have the ideal macronutrient ratio. everything is grass-fed, local, organic. seems like the perfect solution for single (or married) folk who haven't the time to shop or the skill to cook.

Do you HAVE to follow a low carb diet?
OutsideMatchInside replied to slimmingsteff's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It really isn't Keto because if the meat is lean and the spinach is plain, that is just low carb. The key to eating keto, is the fat ratio. -
Keto Diet with weight loss surgery - What are your thoughts about it?
mousecat88 replied to erics300's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I was on a strict keto diet last year and lost a lot of weight (60lbs in 5 months). But keto is big on fats, and fats aren't so awesome for RNY patients. I am obviously a "newbie" post-op... but I was told to stay lowfat/nonfat/lean meats forever. I don't know if a keto diet would work the same with low fat? But I guess if it doesn't upset your stomach than it would be fine.
