    Slowing Down 😶‍🌫️

Oh, yes. I'm just a bit ahead of you surgery-wise at nearly 10 months post-op, and I've noticed a few things as time has gone on. First, the number of pounds I'm losing in a month has slowed. Early on, I was losing 10+ lbs in a month. Two months ago, I lost 6lbs in a month. Now, I'm losing more like 2lbs in a month. Second, there's more noticeable daily fluctuation now. (I like to weigh myself every morning right when I get up, just to have a record.) In the past, I would bounce up or down a few ounces over a few days and then continue my downward progress. Now, I see half a pound or more difference, and I might bounce around for a week or two before reaching a new low weight. I'm currently about 12 lbs away from a "normal" BMI, so that has a big impact on how quickly weight changes. My smart scale also tells me I have higher than average muscle and bone (taken with a grain of salt since I know they're not completely accurate). One thing I notice now is that some of what I see on my body as "areas for improvement" are no longer simply "would look better if less fat." Now it's more like "would look better if more toned." As for staying on plan with nutrition, I'm not going to lie. This time of year is a challenge. There are sweets everywhere, and sadly, I can eat them with far too few side effects. I'm not going crazy like I would have pre-surgery, but I would say it's pretty easy to not be in much of a calorie deficit, either. Plus more eating out at restaurants, more holiday parties, etc. Nutrition is something I will tackle again in January.

    Lansoprazole and hunger?

I've kind of had a breakthrough this morning. I took the meds on an empty stomach because I'm supposed to take them at least a half hour before food. About 10 minutes later, I felt like I was starving, but because I was on my bike and cycling to work, I knew I would have to wait to until I got to work in 20 minutes to eat anything. But the "starving feeling" just stopped after about 5 minutes. I think I've spent so much of life thinking "any sensation in my stomach means I need to eat". And then I had a yogurt about half an hour later and I feel completely full. So I think if I get any sensations in my stomach, I need to wait and actually see what it means and wait about 20 minutes.

    14 Days to Go!

Hi, I’m new here and my surgery date is 10/21 so I can be in your October group? Not sure what all that entails but willing to learn.
  4. Hi Ladies, I’m almost 6 weeks post-op from my gastric bypass. I started at 109.5 kg, and now I’m at 98.6 kg, so I’ve lost about 10 kg. While my nurse and doctor mentioned that I could’ve lost more by now, they said it’s still not bad. Honestly, it didn’t make me feel great, but a loss is a loss, right? I find myself comparing my progress with others, mostly with sleeve patients, which I know isn’t fair. So, I’m here in the bypass forum to hear from others with success stories. Shouldn't the most weight loss happen in the first 2-3 months, and then it slows down? Right now, I’m losing around 1 kg per week, which I know is healthy, but I keep feeling like I should be losing more, and then I panic, wondering if I’m overeating. I’m on a 1200-calorie plan with 8-10 small meals a day. I haven’t been able to stick to the 10 meals, but I do my best to hit 8, and they’re all balanced. My workout routine has been almost non-existent, but I joined the gym TODAY, so that will change! I just need some reassurance that I WILL lose the weight and that I’m not going to fail like I have in the past with weight loss.
  5. Hi, I’m a sleeve revision from 2020 gained back 50 of 100 lost and I’m scheduled for the sedi on 10/24.

    Food Before and After Photos

Went out to a Michelin star Peruvian place this weekend and here’s what we ordered: Red snapper ceviche, truffle ponzu, chives served on rice crackers. This was PHENOMENAL. Tiger prawn gyozas with pea cream and edamame. Spicy beef fillet (medium) with crispy shallots. Crispy cauliflower, chipotle mayo, chives and sesame seeds. Tres Leches (three milk cake), vanilla ice cream and salted dulce de leche. I only had 3 small bites of this as it was too sweet but good albeit. But over all the food was 10/10!

    Slowing Down 😶‍🌫️

I am hoping I still have a while left of losing! My initial goal is to get to 12 stone, which is just about 17 lbs to go I think...12 stone was the lowest I had ever weighed in my adult life when I was at university, though I didn't stay that weight for long before I ballooned to 20st+! Then I have a new goal set for after that, maybe 10 stone IF I can get there, but we will see. I'd like to see how I feel back at that 1st goal! I like the way you are looking at it though - the fact that really our bodies have a lot of control over this, and the rate of losing and where it is comfy. It is probably time I start respecting my body rather than forcing it (and sometimes failing) to do what I want 😅 Thank you for the reassurance ❤️
  8. i actually thought i was in menopause at the time of my surgery...i hadn't had a period for almost two years just prior to that. about 2 weeks after surgery, i got a period, omg. and lasted for like 8-10 days. which is weird, cuz when i was regular, my periods lasted 4-5 days tops. and this one was HEAVY. after that, i got my period like clockwork, every 4 weeks, lasting 4-5 days again. guess i wasn't in menopause after all, i was just fat. which sucked (the period part not the fat part) cuz i really hate getting periods. then about 4 years later, i truly went into menopause. and haven't had a regular period since 2022. yay! but yeah, i as i understand it, hormones are stored in some level of fat, so when there is rapid weight/fat loss, your hormones are released back into your body (bloodstream?), and you are effected by it. so if hormones are the cause of your spotting, this could be why. but to be safe, pls have a visit with your doc or gyno. don't mess with reproductive health: if you can catch something early, catch it early. good luck! ❤️
  9. So I have what I think is Dumping Syndrome or Reactive Hypoglycemia and it is seems like it is caused by 2 things. Taking a shower and exercise. For some reason after I take a shower at night my sugar crashes so bad I have to take glucose tablets to bring it back up. I don't take hot showers (I hate being hot), just warm and it doesn't happen all the time but often enough that I found a pattern and it doesn't happen when I take a shower in the morning only at night. It also happens after I exercise. I eat dinner at 5:00 p.m. I wait at least an hour, hour and 1/2 and I am not a gym rate that I am doing it for hours - 30 minute treadmill, 10 minute rowing machine (I had a total knee replacement so I do this for my knee at a slow pace to get the bend in) and 3 sets of arm exercises with free weights. Literally there are times I have to stop while I am exercising because I can feel my sugar going down. There have been times it has crashed as low as the 50s. I have talked to the doctor about this and the physician's assistant said have protein before you exercise. Well I am having dinner before I do, which is always a protein vegetable and a small amount of carbs. Has anyone else had this issue? I want to exercise but I am afraid every time I do that this will happen and it happens more often than not. I have taken to as soon as I am done exercising to just automatically taking 2 glucose tablets which is adding extra sugar in but in order to have it not crash on me. Thanks in advance for any responses!
  10. I had got my sleeve done on Oct 7th. 1 week post op I lost a total of 6.5 pounds (in addition to the 10 I lost on pre-op diet). But since then, I haven't dropped a single ounce! I walk everyday and I'm still on the liquid diet and just so frustrated. If I have to drink another protein shake, I'll gag. Is this part of the whole 3 week stall????

    Food is Love?

I agree with @DaisyChainOz. There's probably a lot going into his feelings and communication is really important. As a man, I do also understand that some men (me included), just are not good at talking about our feelings. It's partly that we've been conditioned over a lifetime that feelings make us weak and thus we are "lesser" because of it. Also, we've just never learned how to express our feelings, nor to really understand them at all. It's not that we don't have feelings, we just don't really understand them in a way that can be expressed. I tell you all this so you can be patient with your husband. It may take some time for him to share what he's really feeling. The best thing to do is just be supportive and make sure he understands it's okay to share what he's thinking instead of what he's feeling. "Feeling" can be a trigger word for some men. One thing that may (or may not), help the discussion is understanding the risks involved. Again. I don't know what's going on in his head, but if he is fearful of change, or the risks of you having surgery, it's important to help him understand that by far, the riskier thing is NOT having the surgery. I don't know your age or current weight, but I'm assuming you are pretty heavy and likely older just based on the need for a hip replacement and the fact that your orthopedic surgeon won't do the surgery at your current weight. If you are in what's termed "Class III obesity" (in other words, you have a BMI over 40), that alone shortens your life expectancy by 10 to 14 YEARS. I think it's important for both of you to understand this. If he truly loves you, then he should want you to stick around longer.

Went to my crochet group again today and I didn’t need a nap afterwards. I’m hoping maybe I’m done with the afternoon nap stage. I plan to wake up earlier tomorrow and really try to power through again so I can hopefully get my sleep cycle back to normal. Day by day I get a little closer to my normal. ooh and yesterday was a follow up for the muscle cramps that I got in my calf which went away with the magnesium they gave me but I kept the appt anyways because i start soft food Monday and I had questions. She said that since my pre op appt I have lost 19 pounds so that’s one month exactly and the expected loss for a revision is between 5-10 pounds month so I’m doing good.

What you're experiencing is completely normal. Partly your body is simply trying to heal from the surgery, so food right now is not what a healing stomach wants. Regarding the tastes changing, it's entirely possible that some foods you used to like you may never want again. Other things you'll learn to enjoy again. This is just something we all go through. The water thing should get better over time. At this point, your stomach is likely still swollen, so it just can't hold very much. Most of us had to really be religious about drinking just maybe 1-2 ounces at a time and trying to drink every 10-15 minutes while awake. This is hard right after surgery, but as I said, it gets a lot easier as the swelling goes down and you're able to drink more normal amounts. The nausea is a little unusual this far out, so I'd honestly recommend talking to your surgical team. It could just be from overeating/drinking, but it's best to talk to the experts. Regarding weight loss, you have to keep in mind that your body is made up of a lot of other "stuff" besides just fat. You may well be retaining fluid or stool and that can mask weight loss early on. It's physiologically impossible to be eating as little as you are and not losing fat, so please just have faith in the process. The best thing you can do is follow your surgical team's post-op instructions and you WILL lose fat.

@Kimberly740 My surgery isn’t for another week 10/21 on 2nd week of pre op diet. Not doing the perfect following of it though. Did you have problems with having a BM during the 2nd week of pre op diet? Swallowing is hard because of my hernia. Just started a couple of days ago with this difficulty. How are doing now other than wanting something more substantial?

Hello! My dietitian has been preparing me for the pre op diet for months now. I started it on 10/8. My surgery is on 10/22. The first few days weren't that bad, but around day 4-5 I was really hungry and craving my go to foods of cheesy-type stuff. I missed just being able to eat savory foods. I reached out to my dietitian and she said I was ok to drink some pickle juice and even eat one. It has helped tremendously. She even said if the craving is too much I could eat a small piece of lean protein, as the pre op diet is really a liver shrinking, high protein, low carb diet. I have stuck to just a couple pickles, but it is really hard. I suggest keeping in contact with your care team. They are very helpful. This diet is not easy. I am struggling and just want to eat a bowl of macaroni and cheese! Good luck on your surgery!

    Mindful eating?

I think it’s because they think you’ll be so absorbed in what you’re watching you’ll just shovel the food in. It’s the reverse for me & get totally distracted from my eating by what I’m watching. 10 minutes can easily pass between bites. But if it doesn’t work for you best to avoid tv watching. I’m like @ms.sss in that I too can eat more or eat more quickly when eating with others. I have to very consciously be aware of putting my cutlery down & sitting back between bites and giving my full attention to those around me.
  18. Hi Friends. I’m here asking for help with a sample daily diet. I had GB In October of 2019. Highest weight 305. I got to 217 within a year and have slowly gained I’m sitting at 241 right now. I still have some restrictions but I think I’m just all over the place. I need a re-boot diet. Can anyone help or point me in the right direction? I tried going back to my post surgery diet but having a hard time. I feel like I’m blowing in the wind, some days I’m vegan, some days I’m low carb. Ughhhhh Side Note: I still feel good and my labs are perfect now.
  19. I'm finally on the other side of the surgery! I'm abou 10 hours post-op! I've never been so thirsty in my entire life, but otherwise I'm doing OK. I'm in some pain when I try to stand op and I sipped water too fast so that cause some pain, but I don't have any regrets! This is the beginning! I'm so ready!

Hi! Surgery is 10/16, as long as I survive this pre-op diet. lol. I’ve been at it seriously for a year now, and lost 60+ lbs with Ozempic. Coming out of surgery I can’t wait to see my A1C drop, my blood pressure drop, and my CPAP go into storage.

    Body Dysmorphia

I absolutely deal with this. There's times I look in the mirror and still see 421 pounds. My husband made me keep one of my size 5x outfits, one of my size 10 rings, and try to put them on when I get lost in the dysmorphia. And it really helps snap me out of it.
  22. Thank you I’m sorry about your mom. It’s so hard to wait to get help and especially hard to see your loved ones have to wait. I definitely avoid eggs lol they don’t make me throw up but they do cause other issues eggs, lactose except for hard cheeses, chicken - except when it’s ground up, pork, anything fried, salad dressing, mayo, steak, and a lot of beef, protein shakes, protein bars, nuts, corn, onions, juices, oranges, avocado, most turkey, products, and turkey itself, pineapple, any food product from Starbucks - I am 100% sure this is preservative oriented, broccoli, carrots, lettuce, spinach (sometimes can tolerate cooked) I’m not really interested in sympathy, but you can tell there’s not a whole lot left. This is pretty much why I am now affected less than I was because having figured out the list I do end up eating something from the list eventually as I have no choice or I won’t eat. I’m sure I’m missing 10 or 15 items. I would think if it was a parasite my blood work would not be as good as it is. And my blood pressure is 120/72. I’m considering trying a protein shake that is clear to see if the other things that are in them causing the issue or if it’s actually protein but mostly, I’m just looking forward to getting a colonoscopy and an endoscopy to find out what the hell is going on

I did it! Made it to Onederland

Congratulations on achieving onderland! Yay! What weight to stop losing at & how to pick a goal weight are interesting questions and you’ll get different responses. I believe it comes down to where your new set point is (the weight your body is happy at & will keep pulling you back to). It’s the weight where you’re not losing anymore and you have reached a sustainable balance of the number of calories you consume and the activity you do. It’s the weight where you’re happy with how you look & feel too. I had a goal (same as yours) which was the low weight I always dropped to before regaining back up from. I exceeded that. I kept losing until my calorie intake which I was increasing and activity level was in balance. I eat in a way that is sustainable & I don’t feel like I’m missing out or if I’m on a continuous diet or that I have to exercise first hours a day. Some reach a weight but found it wasn’t sustainable or they didn’t feel comfortable at so they gain a little. Remember your new set point may not be where you would like it to be. Also your lowest weight may not be where you end up either. Bounce back (a regain of 10 - 20lbs) is always a possibility & can be due to your body resettling, you realising you need more flexibility in the what you eat & the activity you do to find a better life balance, some conplacency, your new set point, etc. Be flexible in your goal. If you don’t reach it, that’s okay. You’ll be in a better healthier place regardless of the number in the scale. Reach a sustainable balance (food intake & activity) in your life that allows you to live & enjoy your life & doesn’t restrict or limit you. All the best.
  24. I usually drink if I'm thirsty and wait 5-10 minutes to eat, but if I eat, I need at least 20 minutes to have a sip of water again. So I always start with water before my meal.

    Food Before and After Photos

Most of the time. The crackers were an Amazon fresh deal. Normally like $4something a box but on sale 2 for $5 and there’s a promo for spend $35 get $10 off. Which goes before the 2 for $5 sale price. The ones I bought weren’t all that $4.69 pre sale price so I ended up with 10 boxes of different kinds for $15. Example pictures show 8 of the same kind for $10. The broths were also an Amazon fresh deal of buy one get one free with a normal price of $1.69 each. Other Amazon fresh items- green grapes 3lbs for 1.99, tortillas $.98, 12ct english muffins $1.35, hot dog buns $.97, coleslaw mix $1.89, tofu $1.52, and Parmesan cheese had a 50% off coupon making it $3.14 I still use the Flashfood app for most of my produce so that’s where the strawberries ($.50 each), cucumbers ($.30 each) and eggplant, avocado, and peppers ($3 bag) came from. They do apply a service fee but for my order it was only $.38 Kroger was the red grapes ($.89/lb), eggs ($1.99/18ct), and potatoes (1.88). meijer and Aldi were the rest of it with discounted produce at Meijer. The pink bottle thing is strawberry daiquiri tea which came from Aldi’s aisle of shame. 😂
