  1. I'm waiting to have a gastroscopy to see what can be done. Like you I had RNY 21 years ago, weight regain, god awful reflux, bloating etc. Surgeon want to have a look to see if the anamostosis is OK and if there is leakage from the pouch to the remnant stomach, which back then they left the old stomach in. Which can contribute to the weight regain and the reflux. He will only do a revision abdominally, so interested to hear how you get on.
  2. I had my VSG 7/2015. I never felt much restriction and was hungry from the start. I restricted my calories to 800 per day and followed all the rules for the first 3 months and lost 60lbs… then my mother in law was dropped on my doorstep. LONG story but I was the sole provider for my husband and 2 small kids, working 12 hour night shifts. She had stage 4 emphysema and end stage esophageal cancer with alcoholic dementia to boot. Our house was tiny. She was 69 and weighed 65 lbs … let’s just say I was a bit stressed. I stopped counting calories. I plateaued for a full year and then started gaining. I’m now 6.5 years out and just 27 lbs from where I started. I’m hesitant to revise. My bariatrician tells me people tend to not have as much success with revision. I chose a sleeve because I didn’t want to risk not being able to absorb medications I need but my GERD is so bad I may not have a choice. I’d love to hear if anyone had a similar struggle with their initial surgery and were successful with the second. Those in the thread who had the scar tissue and hernia repair, surely they will allow a follow up procedure.
  3. Interesting post. Happy you all shared. I have my revision from VSG to RNY bypass next week and I am so anxious to know how my body with adjust. I have terrible GERD now plus have gained and lost the same 30 pounds for 2 years. I had VSG in March 2017.
  4. Hi. I had My revision from Lap-Band to Gastric Sleeve on Dec 29. I have to say this is not what I expected (although I don’t know what I expected). I expect some of my problems are hormones, I hope. I loved my band but then the esophagus problems started. It seems all I do all day is try to get my fluid intake. I go back to work on Jan 12th. My concerns and questions are, How did or do you handle the fluids intake and bathroom issues? At the moment again I’m just drinking (sipping) all day. I have to hold the cup or it seem I zone or distracted and won’t drink. I got dehydrated and had to go to ER for IV. I scares me know so don’t want to happen again. Then the bathroom it’s like bumm, you gotta go (BM). Any advice would be appreciated. just noticed my old info is still there I can’t figure out how to update
  5. Endoscopy revised gastric bypass…. Anyone in my boat ?
  6. I had sleeve 2017 and having a revision to bypass Jan. 13 due to 30 lbs regain and GERD. Even water causes heartburn. I basically sleep half sitting now. I am so nervous but hopeful.

Am I really gonna lose weight?

I had the lapband in 2009 and due to complications had to get it removed and got the bypass all fairly quickly and I had the revision on 12/15. I struggled with post op diet until this week when I started to eat some puréed foods but I am just not losing weight. Emotionally really frustrating that I went through all this and not seeing results.
  8. Originally I started at 315, got sleeved in late December 2016, made it all the way down to 195 in about 7 months or so. I had several major issues in a short amount of time, including losing my job, having a health issue with one of my children, starting my own business and then losing it, so I had a lot going on and didn't focus on keeping with the program. When I started my two-week fast at the beginning of November 2021 in preparation for revision surgery, I was about 293.
  9. Not to be cliche, but if you think you'll succeed or fail - you're right. You need to have the right mindset going into this. I did very well with my sleeve that I got in 2016, until I started slipping and put it all back on. Five years later I got the revision to bypass 6 weeks ago and it's going very well again, except now I know what to watch out for and how to (hopefully) avoid the pitfalls of last time. Believe that it will work, and do everything you can to help it work, and it will work.

    Revision Jan 6

Had revision surgery on 12/27, I have the physical support but the emotion support of my husband comes and goes. He was not a big fan of me having the surgery but respected my decision enough to be present in my recovery which has been far worse than my initial surgery recovery. I agree tons of support on the boards here. It really helped me through the nerves leading up to surgery. As well as giving me some realistic expectations on after care.

    Revision Jan 6

Just want to wish you luck! It’s gotta be hard not having the support you need. I’m hoping your revision goes well. I’m having an endoscopic suturing revision for my sleeve that was done in 2012. I lost over 100 pounds and got pregnant a year out. I’ve gone up and down for the past 10 years but never back to my lowest and now I’m close to my high 😩. Hoping for a reset.

    Do You loose weight slower

That should be told to the revision patients, and maybe it is but it wasn’t told to me..If that would have been explained to me my expectations would be different.. “catwoman7” what is a virgin bypass?
  13. catwoman7

    Do You loose weight slower

35 lbs in two months is a lot more than I lost - and I had a virgin bypass and weighed almost 400 lbs. And yes - revision patients typically lose more slowly.
  14. I had 360 lower body lift in Aug 2020 along with brachioplasty. I used products from Marena for both areas. They are medical grade compression garments and recommended by my PS. They were expensive but worth it to me. I wasn't sure what size to order so I waited until after my surgery to figure that out. That worked out fine because I had drains on the lower half for a while and used "ACE" type bandages on my arms until I got my garments. Good luck with your surgery. I'll be having my 3rd and final round of plastics on Jan 20. I'll be having thigh lift and revision of a couple of scars from the previous surgeries.

i'm pre-op, for the second time

I'm curious about revisions. What are the criteria for qualifications for such? Do you still have to be a 40 BMI or just have a complication from original WLS?

i'm pre-op, for the second time

I too was sleeved but 9yrs ago. I have major Gerd to the point it makes me throw up. I just found out I have a small hiatal hernia. I went for a consult and the surgeon suggested revision to bypass. I lost 100 pounds after being sleeved but have gained about 70 which sucks. How much did you lose and regain? I hope to fix my Gerd but also lose at least 50. I heard it would be a slower processes since I’m still limited when eating.
  17. I had revision surgery on Nov.8th sleeve to bypass due to Gerd and a Hiliatal Hernia. After doing some research it suggest that revision patients tend to loose weight at a slower pace than other weight loss patients. Has anyone else heard that? I’ve lost a total of 35lbs since surgery and Tuesday will be 2 months.

    Weight loss, dating and confidence

So mine is a little different- I met the guy I’m talking to about 3yrs ago when I was 330lbs at 5’7” (170cm). I didn’t see him much from nov. 2019 (VSG dec 2019 and RNY revision for gerd aug 2020) to Sept. 2021 (155lbs) (I was either on medical leave or working a bunch because of Covid). Anyway, I was super nervous about being seen naked or intimacy related things because of skin and scars (I have a midline scar from sternum to pubic bone). He told me that it’s not the outside that he cares about it’s what’s on the inside because the outside doesn’t always stay the same. And while I’m still super self conscious about the loose skin and scars he makes feel okay with just being myself around him.

    Any December 2021 bypass people?

So I had a RNY revision on 12/13. The first time I had surgery, I lost zero lbs in the first week and then it started falling off. This time I lost 10 lbs preop diet, 5 lbs in the first week. It has now been almost 2 weeks since I have lost anything. I am using a food tracking ap and I am between 800-900 calories a day. Trying to push it up to 1000 - 1200 if I can. I feel better, my mom and boyfriend say my face looks thinner, but no scale movement. Frustrating.

    Post op pain

I just had revision as well 12/21 and was told my pouch was not the size of an egg but now was the size of a thumb. Due previous damage from GERD Ulcers and Hiatle Hernia. First weel was extremely painful I'm on day 9
  22. I’m trying to wrap my head around eating with a bypass versus a lapband. (I currently have a deflated lapband, I’m hoping for revision to a bypass when the lapband comes out.) After eating a small amount with the lapband, I felt literal restriction. And if I overate, I vomited, almost immediately. I understand that with a bypass, since your stomach pouch is so small, you feel full quickly. But from what I’m reading, you don’t usually vomit if you eat too much. Rather some people “dump,” which from what I’m reading happens internally and out the other end. What I’m having a hard time understanding is how you feel full and are forced to stop eating if there is no restriction and you can get down whatever you want, with the consequences only coming later, no vomiting. Do you feel so full from the smaller stomach area that you just can’t fathom eating more than you should? Is the dumping consequence so severe and regular that you instinctively don’t eat enough to cause it ever again once you experience it once? I was successful losing and keeping off 60 lbs with the band. Mostly because I either ate small enough portions to avoid vomiting or because I vomited if I ate too much. I’m trying to wrap my head around what eating (and overeating) will feel like with the bypass and without the restriction of the band. Any experiences you are willing to share?

    why revisions?

My practice required an endoscopy before doing a sleeve to ensure that there wasn't undiagnosed GERD (you can have it and not know it) to start with - if there had been, they wouldn't have done a sleeve since there is an excellent chance it would worsen with a sleeve and necessitate a revision later. Obviously, I could develop it in the future but we'll cross that bridge if we get to it. I'd definitely broach the subject with your doctor before making a final decision, since you will have to weigh all the pros and cons.

    why revisions?

I am also getting a revision surgery too. I have complications with GERD after getting the sleeve done. Honestly the best option, knowing what I know now is that the duodenal surgery would be the best option for you since you’re doing it out of pocket. It will eliminate the issue of development of the reflux

    why revisions?

I saw a study that said about 10% of gastric sleeve patients seek a revision, 5% of bypass patients have a revision & 26% of lap band. In 2019 around 256 000 people had bariatric surgery: 18% had bypass. 59% had sleeve & 1% had a lap band. (Included lap band just out of interest.) Some people develop GERD after sleeve surgery (I read it was about 10% so that seems to match the above revision stats) & consequently require a revision if medication or other management options don’t work. If you already have GERD sleeve is not for you. I had reflux before my sleeve which, like @Hop_Scotch, I mostly managed with dietary choices. Still have reflux but it manifests itself differently now. Some surgeons recommend bypass to patients who have more weight to lose or who they think need extra help to loose their weight as bypass is considered the ‘stronger’ surgery. Sleeve is a less invasive surgery (fewer changes to your digestive system). Generally though the average stats on how much weight is lost with either surgery is about the same at the 5 yr mark (about 65% of the weight to be lost). Malabsorption issues & dumping are a consideration with bypass. You’ll need to continue to take vitamins & may have to adjust medications you take. Malabsorption is rarely an issue with sleeve & dumping is not common. Sleevers often do not need to continue taking vitamins (individual health issues may mean they have to). Personally I haven’t taken vitamins since goal as I absorb all I need from what I eat. Some choose to have a revision because they have had regain or want to lose more weight. Regain can occur because of complacency, bounce back weight, medication, changes to your lifestyle, job, health, etc. or sometimes just life in general which can just throw crap at you. Have a long conversation with your surgeon as to which is the best surgical option for you from a medical perspective & which can best help you achieve your goals (health, weight, lifestyle). Then you know yourself best as to which surgery best suits how you want to live your life after surgery & whether you will need the stronger surgery to get you where you want to be in the long term. All the best.
