    4 months post op

    My first stall hit at 2 weeks post op and lasted about a month. Stalls are a normal part of the process. If the scale is making you crazy, stay off of it. Follow the plan. Trust the process. You'll be fine. The pattern that my body seems to have settled into is, I lose about 3 pounds. Stall for a couple of weeks. Gain back 2 pounds. And then stall for a week. And then it starts all over again. I'm losing on average of about a pound a week. So the scale is going down, but not without going up first. Your body is going to do what your body is going to do. If you're eating in a calorie deficit, you're going to lose weight.

    Stalls are the worst! I had a stall that was 5 weeks long and now the weight loss has slowed way down. I wasn't told to go back to shakes though, but to increase my calories and add strength training. Its weird how each dr has their own plan and we just have to hope that our dr can get us to our goals. You have done so well though and should be proud! My favorite shakes were the fairlife ones if you haven't tried them yet. Good luck and keep us updated on if the shakes work.

She actually has me on a 1200-calorie diet, up until the last visit with the protein thing, I have had no restrictions, except to keep my diet at 1200 calories, she told me that she believes that no food should be off limits and that people need to be eating carbs (she was very adamant about that) I was actually scared to try her suggestion of Dave's bread, but I did and I have lost weight. I am also only the 2nd person she had counseled that is on the bariatric surgery track. She does not spend time looking anything up and gave me a whole book on diabetic healthy meals, even though I am not pre-diabetic or diabetic at all.
  5. I am in a major stall! I have lost 50 pounds so I'm not disappointed in the total loss, but just not going below the 151-152 mark is annoying. I have 20 to 25 more to loss to reach my goal. Even though my calorie count is good I have not been drinking protein shakes. I just got so tired of the sweetness. (Never thought I would say that!) LOL At my dr appt last week I was told to go back to the shakes for 1 or 2 meals a day. Thanks for letting me vent!
  6. I know you're probably getting tired of this, BUT - first of all, I had a "non-bariatric" dietitian for my pre-op diet as well. But that surgery is so common now they know what they're dealing with and the requirements - or if not, it's easy enough for them to look it up. My dietitian had worked with several pre-op bariatric patients in the past, even though she was a generalist. also, if you're going to cut calories (which of course you should if you're wanting to lose weight), protein is the LAST macro you want to cut. Protein preserves muscle mass. If you don't get enough, you'll be eating through muscle. As long as your overall calories are lowered, you'll lose weight. I don't remember how much protein mine had my eating because it was nine years ago this summer that I started with her, but I know I was eating a lot more protein and a lot fewer carbs than I was before I started seeing her. also, I still eat 100-150 grams of protein a day because if I get less than 100, my prealbumin level tanks. Most bariatric patients eat somewhere in the 60-80 (or some clinics say 60-90) gram range, but some of us need to eat more than that for various reasons.
  7. protein needs are higher for post-surgical bariatric patients than they are for "normal" people. Most of us eat higher protein/lower carb diets than do normal people. This is percentage-wise, not gram-wise. So yes, the dietitian will likely have you eating fewer calories, but a higher protein to carb ratio. So I don't find her recommended protein level that unusual. on my pre-op diet, the dietitian had me eating 2200 calories/day. As a 300+ lb person, I lost weight on that, because I'm sure I was eating 3000 or more cal/day to maintain my 300+ lb weight. On the flip side, many 170 lb people (well, women anyway) would gain weight if they averaged 2200 calories a day, unless they're very active. However, in addition to having me average 2200 cal/day, she also increased my protein to carb ratio, to more or less match what it would be after surgery. I lost weight like crazy (over 50 lbs before surgery) - and it was probably a healthy way to do, too. cutting your intake down to what a 170 lb person would normally eat might not be very sustainable at this point. That would likely be around 1700-cal (for women), give or take depending on your metabolism and how active you are. It was even hard for me to get used to 2200 (although I eventually did) - but I did lose a ton of weight on that.
  8. 99 grams is what you are supposed to have at 300 lbs in order to lose weight. If you are an athlete then it would be more. So in other words no, you would not eat protein in an amount that supports an unhealthy weight when trying to lose weight, which makes sense because you do not eat anything else at that level (fats, carbs, sugars, calories) to support an unhealthy weight when trying to lose.

I will be seeing the dietician in the program when I finish my pre-surgery steps 12 dietician visits, 6 weigh-ins, and the goal weight that is set for me, I have to do it by a certain date, which is coming up pretty soon. Then I will start with the clinic that has a surgeon and its own dietician. As far as meal options I am happy with what I currently eat, I do not like to waste time and energy on making something new every meal. I was just concerned about why she would have me at a normal calorie level but then want to me eat a protein amount that is supportive of a heavier person. Especially since I have not complained about being hungry, because I haven't been hungry. She doesn't even want me to take any vitamins, because she says what I eat I get enough vitamins.
  10. 150 grams of protein is only 600 calories. You need to eat the correct amount of protein so the weight you do loose is mostly fat and not muscle. Also protein keeps you satisfied longer so you shouldn't be hungry quickly after eating. My biggest suggestion is not to second guess your dietician, surgeon, etc. Not to be harsh but what you have been doing apparently hasn't worked or you would not need WLS. In order for WLS to be successful, you will have to stop making excuses and follow the plan. WLS is not easy or a quick fix. It is just a tool. You and only you will still have to work hard. Whoever says it is easy hasn't done it! You CAN be successful just like so many others on this site.
  11. It absolutely could be the shakes or the artificial sweeteners in them or the other zero calorie drinks. Try other shakes - maybe Fairlife or one made with pea protein? Also try different drinks - maybe tea or lemon water? I like Body Armor Lyte, they are made with erythritol, which I seem to do just fine with. Some people do better with savor drinks like bone broth. I felt like trash on my LRD as well (2 weeks, liquids only). You are definitely NOT alone. hang in there though, it doesn't last forever but it is an important part of the process!
  12. 150 grams of protein for a 300 lb person is not too much - and in fact, skewing toward eating more protein vis-a-vis fat and carbs will help you lose weight. Protein takes longer (and more calories) to burn off than do the other two macronutrients, and it can also keep you satisfied longer.
  13. Choose any one scale, if its at home put it in exactly the same space every time. If I move mine to the other side of my bathroom I gain 7lbs. Is the dietician the one your surgeon uses ? and is this the surgeons advice to you ? 150 grams of protein is not a lot pre surgery. Eating protein will make you feel fuller while keeping calories low. I imagine you need to keep the Carbs low. Can you add what you protein count is usually like, it will help us help you Are you vegetarian or vegan? There are so many protein options out there now. Find some protein yogurts that you can eat or add extra protein to your milk and yogurt. Dhal is great for protein, add extra yogurt and seeds to top it.
  14. I had my first follow up with my surgeon last night as this week makes it 6 weeks. I told him all my concerns that I shared in this thread and he basically told me to stop comparing myself to everyone else, as people lose weight at different speeds. He also told me that I don't need to be juggling down the 50g protein shakes I have been doing as it's all liquid calories, and that now I can eat solid foods again, to concentrate more on food protein than liquid protein. He said he's very happy with my progress, although I don't know if I believe him? I've stalled for the last three weeks and put on a pound this week, but he seems to be happy that I've lost a stone since 31st January. Personally, I think it's very slow. But I guess that's part of the comparison stuff isn't it? I'm moving house so I've packed my scales away and am going to try and weigh myself once every two weeks.

    I rarely have carbonation. I have sparkling water every day but I drink it pretty flat (keep the lid on the bottle loose). I drink it because I like the taste as a change from plain water. I do have soda or tonic water in the odd gin & the odd glass of champagne. But I only drink about once a month & then one glass is usually enough. Yes alcohol is empty calories, can slow your metabolism, etc. but I just donโ€™t enjoy it as I used to. But when I do have it I have the real stuff: quality over quantity.๐Ÿ˜ Also carbonation stirs up my reflux. Actually I watched an interesting medical program yesterday & they said there is research that carbonation (any drink) stimulates the production of our hunger hormone & results in people consuming 100+ calories per day. Unsure if the more carbinated drinks you consume the more you eat though.     PCOS and hormone struggles

    Thanks for your response and the links. I am about 5 weeks out. I am typically a fast eater but I use a bariatric app now to time my eating. (Which felt so silly until I realized I needed to take more time) I track everything less for the calories and more to make sure I hit that protein goal so I know I am usually hitting the 60g or slightly surpassing it for 3 weeks straight now. Fluids was a struggle and hitting 60oz is hard for me. I get into that range most days like it might come out 50ish oz a day on average for the past two weeks so maybe that is the problem (I did admit this to my doctor as well) I don't drink at all after eating I figured out quickly that was a ticket to barftown. Meats are just not my friend. Chicken specifically my stomach just automatically rejects it in any form including pureed. Fish will stay down but I'm only gonna get a couple of bites from that. Most my protein is coming from eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese and protein shakes. So I think when I said that to my surgeon that was her red flag for gallbladder but I guess I'll find that out in April. I am not on the strict only three meals a day routine they set for me and my surgeon is okay with that because I'm only getting a few bites for meal times unless it straight up broth then I can do 4oz. I kind of just eat every 4 hours and use a food scale to figure out how much I ate each time. However reading your post I think maybe I'll stay away from the scale until I can hit the water goal more consistently. My next appointment is 6 weeks out (I don't think I can wait until then to see where I am because if I step on that scale six weeks later and I'm still 199 my heart will just shatter) and because I go through the VA I think that might be my last or I have to pay out of pocket so I am panicking more that I'm not on track. Like if I was progressing better I would feel more confident without that support and I know when I only have the VA to lean on then I am pretty much on my own no one is going to help me trouble shoot there. I'm in the same boat and feel hesitant about making my own post because when I talk about not losing weight after the surgery the questions feel like they turn into what am I doing wrong. I can barely eat the highest I hit in a day was 1000 calories and that was a very active day. Most the time it's in the 500 cal range. I hit my protien and water goals. My surgeon says I'm doing the right things and wants to check my gallbladder.   18. It was a 'hungry' night so I made Hot and sour soup made with wide konjac noodles (the packets had chili oil, seasoning pack, soy sauce, black vinegar, roasted peas = 169 cal), and I added napa cabbage, Chinese broccoli, 1 boiled marinated egg. Total of 267 calories, 11.3 carbs.

    5 Pounds lost in 6 weeks?

    Wow, very noticeable difference!! Nicely done and I hope you find that visual progress encouraging! ๐Ÿ˜ A few thoughts- 1) you've just passed a month since major surgery and your body is working hard to recovery, repair and get you back out there to your active life ๐Ÿค— I'm just a couple weeks from my bypass and working on talking to myself/honoring my body, sometimes with humor ๐Ÿ˜… but acknowledging "my body is amazing, and strong, look how well I'm recovering", stuff like that. 2) your food plan looks good to me 3) while you can't actually build brand new muscle without being in a calorie surplus, I wouldn't be surprised if getting back to working out after a lull could cause some micro tissue tears and some water retention 4) need new scale batteries? Lastly, I don't know if you'd have access to one somewhere, but a BodPod uses air displacement (something like that) to accurately measure fat vs non-fat. It was so enlightening to me to see that pre -surgery, I legitimately could burn 3000 cals on an active day, even at 5'4 ๐Ÿ˜… because of my build. Anyhow, I just needed to know that, so when the scale wasn't moving I could say "science!!" If I'm eating 500 cals and burning even just 2000, I will eventually see it on the scale or tape measure. The body is just going to process weight loss and healing in its own sweet time. All that to say, it must really be disheartening to not see the numbers change after all your hard work and I hope you find some answers. Maybe for now frame your loss since Christmas or New Year's, because you've lost so much! Good luck to you!
  20. Sorry it's been so rough! I had 24 hours of puking around 4 post-op and it was terrible, so my heart goes out to you. I hope your recovery starts snowballing now and a week from today you feel *normal*๐Ÿค— My plan counts protein drinks and soups towards liquids 100%. ( And for the record my "output" has been regular and the right color and whatnot, so I've not had reason to second guess it). I didn't love premeir protein's clear, but I could keep down propel (the individual sticks) either in hot water or well-watered down. I also love Lonolife powdered bone broth, it has 10 grams of protein and just settled really well. Lastly, a protein drink (fairlife or premeir), 8 oz of skim Fairlife milk, and then 8 oz of decaf coffee has really been helping me get down protein (43 grams) and fluid (~32 oz). It just seems to settle better than a straight up protein drink. It just takes a couple hours to drink, but I don't mind sipping on it that long ๐Ÿ˜… Lastly, I did try mixing some powdered pb or regular pb into a blended shake because my plan okayed that. That can bump up calories ๐Ÿ‘ I just need to taste something different/different consistency, so I haven't done it again. There were a few days there everything tastes weird and nasty, but thankfully that has gone for the most part!

    I use Lose It...it is a paid app but considerably cheaper than the Premium version of My Fitness Pal, and has just as many features. If you're using pen and paper you're probably going to need to use an app or website to look up calories/macros so it seems redundant not to use an app where you can look things up and log in the same step.

    So sorry you are experiencing this. I think you need to find another bariatric surgeon & discuss your options. A revision to bypass will help you lose more weight (maybe not a lot but some) so yiu can look into knee replacement surgery in the future & it certainly will help with your gerd. You can not survive on shakes & protein bars. Besides not getting the nutrients your body needs to function effectively, the low calorie diet will be slowing your metabolism down more. You did lose 100lbs. Thatโ€™s almost a third of yourself. Thatโ€™s something to celebrate. Remember the average weight loss is about 65% of the weight you have to lose to put you in a healthier weight range. So, not knowing your height or what would be your healthier weight, Iโ€™d expect you may have been pretty close to that statistic. So your stall, which are very common & can occur many times, may have been you reaching your new weight set point & stabilising. I find it ironic that your surgeon complained your sleeve was too big. I mean they did the surgery so if the sleeve is too big thatโ€™s on them not you.

    I've tried apps in the past, but figuring out the calories, carbs & protein and all for things I made at home I found very frustrating. During my pre-op clearance process (surgery is scheduled for 3 weeks away) I was placed in a weekly group session with psych. One of the things we discussed was keeping a food diary. We were told in the class that food diaries are the #1 best predictor of weight loss. What helped me was when I was advised not to focus on the macros, or calorie counts but to focus on what I ate, when I ate it and how I felt. I whipped up a spreadsheet on Google Sheets and just go to it on my phone and list it down, it was frustrating at first but I found it has really helped me these last two months that I have been doing it. I'm hopeful that it has helped me be on the right footing in my post-op "new life." I hope that helps.
  24. I was sleeved 08/2017. It's been a constant struggle. I was told by the surgeon that I wasn't progressing as well compared to others. That my sleeve is bigger than he wanted & my metabolism is slow & I needed to work harder. I do have severe GERD but I have learned to work around that. I found out I have tachycardia. Also then & even worse now mobility issues. I couldn't vigorously exercise due to having grade 4 Osteoarthritis in my left knee. I stuck to the program & went from 323 to 223. I stalled & went into a deep depression. I wasn't losing unless I ate 800 calories or less. I gained all of my weight back due to decreased mobility & depression. I fell off the wagon per say. I now need a hip & knee replacement plus my right knee is almost just as bad as my left. I'm in chronic pain. For me to have surgery I need to lose weight. Nobody would do the surgery a few years ago when I was thinner stating I'm too young blah, blah. My quality of life has dwindled the last 2 years and I gained it all back plus 20lbs. For the last 8 weeks I have been using my fitness Pal to login my food diary. I'm eating every 3-4 hrs mini meals. Substituting 2-3 meals with protein shakes/bars to obtain my protein goal. I would lose weight 1 week than the next gain back & forth. I don't understand. In 8 weeks I've lost 12lbs. I went from 343 to 328 to yo-yo 331. I have experimented & it doesn't seem to matter if I eat 800 calories or 1000 or under 1200. I gain/lose weight. I always eat no more than 1200 and no less than 800. Does anyone have any tips.     I prefer an app, prior to surgery I was using My Fitness Pal for years, but after surgery switched to Baritastic. But I think online may help you more if they are trying to see how many calories you are consuming etc
