  1. Since surgery I have averaged a 1lb loss every day. Today I was up nearly 1lb and now I feel so discouraged. Maybe my expectations are too high, I was so enjoying my progress up till now and not so much today.
  2. I'm two days out and just got out of the hospital. I'm feeling pretty good. It's a challenge to get the Water and Protein shake in, but I'm just sipping as often as I can. Luckily they were able to do the surgery laparascopically, so I'm not as sore as I would have been with an open incision. I'm looking forward to actually sleeping tonight instead of being woken up every hour or so at the hospital. I did put on a couple pounds - others have said it's due to the constant IV hydration in the hospital. I have been spending some time walking, it helps with the gas and aches and pains. Did 33 laps around the hospital floor yesterday. Today I'm just walking around the block. My house is small so if I want to walk it must be outside. I was really lucky that I didn't have nausea after surgery. I'm just trying to learn how much I should have with my sleeve. So far I just take a sip or 2 then wait 10 or 15 minutes and do it again. Best of luck to you for your May 31st surgery!
  3. I had my band removed and was sleeved on 5/19. Trying to get my vitamins and nutrients and I was taking Bariactric Advantage Chewable Vitamins before my surgery. But now when I take them I almost immediately get sick, its like the taste changed and my stomach said "no way". Anyone have any recommendations on something else to try??

I got the same thing.. Was told that it is because is the surgery and cutting muscle... Put a heating pad on it.. 20 mins at a time.. It lasted a couple of weeks .. I am much Better.. Sleeved on 10/6.. No more pain!
  5. I'm heading in for appointment number 1 today. I've got my binder all ready to go. They are going to think I'm a nut. It has the notes I took during my information session via webinar; a calendar for the several date options I would like to consider based on my teaching schedule (April, May, July); my documentation proof of 6 months of supervised diets as required by my insurance; copies of recent blood work and EKGs from my recent gallbladder surgery; pages of stuff I've found on this site and most importantly my list of questions for today. I've been thinking about WLS since 2004 when my then 60 year old mother had her bypass. I was heavy, but not heavy enough. I can remember joking with my PCP about being more than capable of gaining a few more pounds to qualify. But at the time I was working for United Airlines and our insurance policy specifically excluded all kinds of WLS. So I never actually thought I would be walking into a surgeon's office for this discussion. I retired from United and gained 35 pounds over the 10 years- neither of which I thought would happen. I'm a life long dieter. Diet pills in high school when I weighed 140lbs; Weight Watchers in college dropping from 160 to 140; Jenny Craig, many attempts at WW, South Beach, Atkins and most recently Ideal Protein. I even took Redux in the FenFen era. I have really good BCBS insurance now. Unfortunately I pay a fortune for it because my husband lost his job and we pay cobra. But since the payment is as big as the mortgage, I figured I should take advantage of it while I have it. The requirements for approval are surprisingly few- Be 18, have a BMI of 40 or 35 with co-morbid conditions; complete a psychological examination and participate in either a 6 month structured diet program or 2 three month consecutive programs. I'm 48. My BMI is 42. I did WW for 7 months in 2013 and Ideal Protein via my cardiologist for 9 weeks. I take BP medicine, a low dose aspirin, and a nitrate to reduce chest pains caused by a totally blocked small artery in my heart. So with the exception of the pysch eval- I'm already done with my requirements. It was a comment during a snow storm this winter that was really my light bulb moment. My 17 year old and husband headed out to sled one day and my daughter made a comment that broke my heart- She said "Mom, have you ever gone sledding with us? I can't remember even one time" OUCH! The truth hurts. I haven't done anything with my kids over the last 10 years and now they are all grown up. (17 & 20) I don't think my daughter ever understood because she was very heavy but never slowed down. I think she just thought I didn't want to do anything with them. Breaks my heart and I need to change that by being active with them moving forward. I want the 4 of us to do a Mud run kind of thing or ride the roller coasters at Cedar Point with them. (side note: my daughter stayed on WW and lost 65lbs in 2013 unlike the hubby and I who weigh more now) I have enjoyed lurking on these boards for the past view weeks and look forward to taking the plunge with all of you. Happy Friday!!! Amy

    Back pain

Also having some MAJOR rumbling grumbling like almost like I have to poop but I don't. I had 3 good sized BMs last night which have me good relief but I've had nothing but Water since I've been home (and liquid pain killer) so I can't really change my diet at all. Even though I don't have to go to the bathroom it's still keeping me awake because I'm scared ill go in my sleep. Starting weight 321- sleeve date 07/10/13 Sent from my iPhone using VST

    Sleeved June 1st

nraeh So glad you are recovering nicely and had an easy surgery! I got sleeved on Wednesday, June 1st as well! Just got out of the hospital Saturday afternoon (TODAY) and I am feeling pretty good too. Haven't tried a shake yet. Still just doing Clear liquids -- I had two sugar free jell-os tonight along with chicken broth, Vitamin Water zero and an sugar free ice pop! But after only being out of the hospital for 10 hours -- I pooped (sorry for the TMI but I am so proud & excited!). So my digestive system is working a - okay. My surgery went fine but it was delayed getting into the operating room. There were several emergency surgeries that bumped my ELECTIVE procedure. So instead of starting at 11 am they didn't start until 3PM so I was dehydrated going into the surgery. Of course they wouldn't let me even have ice chips until after the esophogram (swallow test) and in a major NYC hospital between the time you take the test, your surgeon gets the results and then actually gives a written order to start the patient on liquids takes way more time than a dehydrated gal wants it to take!!! All that aside every day I feel better. My new tiny tummy is still a bit sensitive. When I ingest anything even water I feel lots of contractions that aren't terrible but I would like them to go away. I need to keep taking the anti-nausea drugs and the PPI. I may try diluting a shake with water tomorrow and see if I can get in some Protein. There is always Isopure -- I broke down and bought three bottles (GRAPE/APPLE-MELON/BLUE RASPBERRY). Like you nraeh -- I am glad to be sleeved and looking forward to starting my journey! EJ

  10. The following comment is based solely on my own personal experience with the sleeve. I feel for you. But my concern is that at your current weight I don't see how you wouldn't wind up with the sleeve post-op becoming terribly underweight. I'm 13 months post-op and have lost 95 pounds and am now below my goal and trying to stay here without losing more weight. The sleeve really, really limits how much you can eat at one time. And when you're "done," you can't just put on the weight loss skids when you want to. It has taken me 5 months since reaching my weight loss to get to the point where I can regularly eat 1600 - 1700 calories a day, which is my maintenance calorie budget. And getting here took significant planning and snacking (not grazing!). In the meantime, I've lost another 10 pounds -- which, as it turns out, I like sitting at. And then there's this: If you're one of the unlucky ones who has a WLS complication of some kind you won't have a big overweight buffer to tide you over while your body recovers from the complication. These are the obvious reasons that surgeons don't do RnY or sleeve or other permanent WLS on patients who aren't already very overweight or obese.
  11. I think I am eating about 1/2-3/4 cup of food at a meal. Is that to much?
  12. I was sleeved 2/20/2019. Nearing the one year mark! Obviously the weight loss has slowed down but I'm curious if anyone is still losing this far out? I started at 273 on the day of surgery and have gotten down to 181 but have been here for a couple months.
  13. I've lost 19 lbs and u don't feel hungry at all. A little gas pain not much no more pain meds. I'm loving my new life.
  14. Today is day 10 post op. I have lost 26 lbs since the surgery. This is my third day adding protein to my diet. Yesterday was the first day with no weight loss, but, I had to break our a pair of suspenders to keep my pants up. Walking more each day. Gonna stay away from the scale a couple of days.

    Back pain each night

I had back pain for about 10 days and then it just went away. I heard varying excuses from trapped gas to the back compensatig for weakened stomach muscles. Since it did go away, I didn't worry about it. Hang in there! It *does* get better!

Nsv - Size 12 Jeans Falling Off

Way to go Sharon! I can take off my size 12 jeans without undoing them, but I have yet to wear anything labeled "10." I think I might just faint on the floor when that happens. :-) Congratulations to you!!!
  17. My size 12p jeans are now so large they fall down. I really can even wear them with a belt. I just bought new size 10 petite jeans. How sweet it is! I am still wearing size either size 12p or 10p in dress pants - depends on the brand. Love my sleeve! Sharon

    Weight gain

10 lbs of fluid gain. Don't worry. You'll lose it with about 50 trips to the bathroom.
  19. I was sleeved 10/27 and I only had a one night stay in the hospital. I had not complications and no nausea. I did have gas bubbles really bad the first time I tried chicken broth. I got really car sick on the way home but I didn't throw up. When I go home I felt really overwhelmed and had second thoughts about going home so early. I was able to sleep off my doubts but it wasn't until today that I started to feel less weak and more normal. I have been able to get in my yogurt, milk, and Water. I haven't had any nausea with any of the food I've tried on my full liquid diet. My pain level has definitely diminished but I still have JP drain in which tugs sometimes uncomfortable. I get that taken out tomorrow which I'm excited about. All and all, I'm feeling less helpless and more like this was the right decision. Plus 5 lbs lost in 4 days isn't bad! How is everyone else doing?
  20. For those who haven't been following my story............... I was diagnosed with an eroded band in November of 2011 and had it removed in March of 2012. I had to wait for six months before revising to the gastric sleeve as my surgeon wanted to wait for me to heal completely and do medical tests before confirming that I would be a good candidate for the sleeve. I have complete those tests and he was satisfied that I could have the sleeve. We also found that I had developed another hiatal hernia (the first one was repaired when I had my lap band surgery). My predetermination request for the sleeve surgery was denied. They stated that I needed to complete a six month weight loss program in order for them to consider my request. I asked my surgeon's insurance coordinator to appeal based on the reasoning that this was a repeat surgery for a lap band that had medically failed me and that I shouldn't have to complete the six month medically supervised weight loss program. She filed an appeal but no where in the letter did it address the six month weight loss program so of course they denied me again stating that we still hadn't submitted the records they had requested. Frustrated beyond belief, I took the initiative to write my own appeal letter. I used language from the BCBS-AL bariatric policy regarding repeat surgeries and their rationale for requiring the six month weight loss program and explained how I had met that rationale just by having a lap band for four years and that my waiting for six months before revising to another surgery was not conducive to improving my health. I just got off the phone with BCBS-AL and they have approved my surgery!!!!!! I am actually shocked that I succeeded in my appeal. I fully expected them to deny me and had already started the medically supervised six month weight loss program in preparation for that denial (and have lost 10 lbs over a six week period which is nice). I'm excited, relieved and nervous! I've been through this before so I don't know why but I am. I was very successful with my lap band (losing 94 lbs). I remember how wonderful it felt to be thin and feel good about myself and how I looked and not to be in pain anymore from carrying around all this extra weight (yes I packed the pounds back on after my band was removed). I can't wait to be there again! Yeah me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thigh gap after never having one before?

If I ever had a thigh gap, I was when I was like......10 years old! I am not sure I care to have one. I was born with thick legs/thighs just like my mom and grandma so I'm ok with it. I like my legs/thighs a little thick. I just want them to be toned really nicely.
  22. I am 3 weeks post op and was swollen for 2 1/2 weeks. I had lost about 10 pounds but all my clothes were tighter than before surgery. I feel back to normal now.
  23. My highest weight was 246. I had lapband in 2006. I only lost maybe 40 pounds. Gained 20 back then lost it again doing HCG. Gained and lost it again doing good old diet and exercise as the band did not really work for me. At 205 pounds, I did revisional surgery to gastric sleeve in January of 2013, but I left my band in. So, my stomach was not cut as small as most sleevers. Weight loss was slow, and I could eat whatever I wanted without getting sick or having any negative side affects. I just became fuller faster and as such ate smaller portions. Today I weigh 126 and have lost an overall total of 120 pounds...still 10 away from my personal goal. In my personal opinion...I wish I skipped the lapband all together and went straight for the sleeve. I left my band in as a security blanket. I now wish I just took it out and got the smaller stomach. Luckily, my insurance covered both surgeries. Just my two cents for anyone who wants it.

    Water Intake

Me too- I had a lot of trouble the first few weeks and now I am at week 8 post-op. I am with you on that we would get a warning signal from our stomachs, I would think. And its not like we can take gulps after gulps- I usually have to wait 5-10 minutes before I can gulp again.

    Weight Loss

They probably gained 3 lbs of Water weight after surgery. You're on an IV and that puts water weight on some or probably even most. Don't freak out about this surgery. Be realistic about your expectations an keep remembering it's a tool not a miracle and don't expect it to be easy.. You got a lot of work ahead, this is just the beginning. My daugher had Dr. Garcia on Jan 23rd. We loved him and his staff in TJ. She's down from an 18 to a size 8-10. She like me struggles with the food addiction. We were just saying, "well you can't eat a whole gallon of ice cream at one time, but you can eat a gallon in a day!" Some days it's just hard.
