Personality and friendliness aside, where can I details on surgeons such as how many lapbands they have done, percent revisions, etc?
-
Good evening, Hi everybody, I'm newbie here, currently waiting for revision approval. I'm a Lap Band failure case - Had it in for 11 years (actually loved it - it was a great tool), and got to goal weight after 18 months. I kept it off without much issue, until it eroded into my stomach, and pretty much almost killed me. This was the third issue that I had with the band. Two port infections, lead to port revisions, and one MRSA infection. It was finally removed in 2015, and sadly, now I'm back up to where I was before my banding. I'm currently in my 5th month of 6 monitoring/counseling, for pre-op revision approval for bypass. Unfortunately, I've also since gained 6lbs. since I started that monitoring [during the holidays]. I know that I'm being a bit, "It's my last _______, and I want to enjoy it" . I've followed every class, every appointment, and every health test, but still have not heard back about my "March" surgery date for bypass. I have one more nutrition appointment as required by BCBS, and one more evening 'STRIVE' support counseling meeting that must be done for revision surgeries as per my doctor's office. I'm just panicked that I've been going through all of this, but have not heard anything regarding a yes or no at this point. I'm currently at a BMI of 39.4 with sleep apnea (on CPAP), severe heartburn, failed back fusion surgery, Lupus, Fibromyalgia, and am in LOTS of pain - 100% disabled since 1995, so Medicare is my primary with BCBS of GA secondary. Has anybody gone through the six month pre surgery hoops only to get turned down? I'm just so worried that it's going to be a no go decision. I really appreciate that this page/group is here, and look forward to hearing from y'all! Thanks 🙂

Dr. St. laurent cypress tx?

I had the band done 5 years ago and lost 80 lbs. In the beginning I always wanted for him to add fills and he wouldn't till I mastered it.I admire this. He takes the time to see you. I have been having problems the last year and I am getting the revision surgery to the sleeve on June 16.I found out he trained some other top band sleeve surgeons. -
Hi there! I'm scheduled for a revision from Lap-Band to gastric bypass on May 19. I have had my band for 5.5 years and have just had too much trouble with it almost the entire time but worse for the last two years, and I'm looking forward to having it out. I initially wanted nothing to do with bypass and thought the band would be my perfect tool but of course didn't anticipate all the negative effects. It took me a while to decide to revise and now it can't come quick enough!! I am most nervous about my port coming out as I've read that it can be quite painful, and it's been sitting in there getting all encapsulated for more than five years, whereas it seems like the majority of revisions are only two-year-old bands. My biggest hurdle will be my Protein shakes. I can't tolerate artificial sweeteners too well and don't really like whey protein, so I've been researching alternatives. I have an egg-white Protein powder and a vegan powder ready to go, which both are highly rated by consumers. I tried a sample egg-white powder and it was far better to me than whey. They are both sweetened with stevia, also better for me personally. I am also planning on purchasing unjury chicken Soup, which is whey but (apparently) better hidden with the savory flavor. Most of my prep is done and I'm just waiting. PS, I'm not too patient!!

Comparing this to post-op Lap Band

My experience after revision was much much better than when I had lapband....but that could be because I was so happy to have the damn band out of my body! -
Just Called My Insurance To Check On My File.....
woo woo replied to tigermom12's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have heard that they have to put a date in when they submit to insurance, but that that date is/can be later revised once the approval is in. -
I am nine months out after my VSG and my reflux issues are very bad despite max doses of PPIs , Ranitidine and regular Antiacids. I now have Barretts Esophagus and Chronic Gastritis. My surgeon and GI doc and GP are all saying Revision is not going to be an answer, but the evidence I've read seems to indicate it is a viable option. The recent concerns of a possible link between use of PPIs and Dementia really worries me and I am going to try and push forward with the Revision. I've also been reading about and interesting surgical option, the Linx Ring. I'd like to hear from anyone who has had the Revision for Reflux and also from anyone who has or had Chronic Gastritis after VSG. Did it resolve itself eventually? Thanks, Pam VSG May 27th,2015. 90 lbs lost

VSG Revision?
trace00@yahoo.com replied to Zoumommy's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Yeah unfortunately I didn't lose much weight with the vsg. I've lost 70lbs so far since my revision. However I would've done it anyway because my reflux and nausea was so bad prior to. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
VSG Revision?
trace00@yahoo.com replied to Zoumommy's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am 5 months post op revision. I started having reflux (and had prior) to vsg. Took meds for it, however only lost 30lbs with it. My doctor and her practice closed when I was 3 months post op. When I did follow up was about 2 years later because my reflux had became so extreme. My md did an egd and saw an obstruction. The Endo capsule also revealed reflux 4x what was considered severe. I elected to revise to bypass per his decision. However once inside he saw no usable portion of my stomach so he took out whole stomach and made pouch out of esophageal lining (also re routed everything like a bypass). Since surgery I have had absolutely no reflux or nausea!!!!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
I'm having revision from sleeve to by-bass on Monday the 21st, I have an obstruction (twist) and gurd, I'm not looking forward to it, but I know it must be done. I will keep you posted or if you have any question, jst ask
-
I wasn't aware that a revision would help with that.

I'm so sorry. Take the meds religiously. They tried to get mine to heal for 6 weeks before surgery was the plan. The constant contracting pain is the hardest part for me. And I struggle to eat anything and when it started at 2 month post op I was doing great. I got to where I could eat anything with no issues. I'm living of milk with protein powder and yogurt now :/ Good luck. Feel free to pm me! My bypass revision is scheduled for Monday 2/20.

Checking in with all the february peeps
Dawn Hanaphy replied to Dawn Hanaphy's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am coming up on 4 months Post op and I am so happy. The Scale this morning said 200.5 I am so excited to think I will be under 200 pounds again. It has been 16 years since I was under 200 pounds. I am not there yet but so confident in the sleeve surgery, after a failed lap band. I had a rough day the other day, was picking at food all day long and made a spaghetti bolognese for dinner. My baby 4 ounce stomach had just about enough of my bad behavior and let me know. for all you lap band to sleeve revisions who had no problem vomiting daily like I did. This was so different. It was torture. and I am so Happy it was. With the lap band if something got stuck, just vomit. I feel like I will never do that again after what it was like to puke up spaghetti bolognese. lesson learned. Would love to hear from the February peeps the good bad and ugly. 53.2 pounds down. Not even 4 months out. -

Lab Band Removal Experience?

Dr. Robert Snow - Is anyone out there?
jennyh77 replied to justmermp's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Yep, I was banded by Dr Snow. Soon after the banding with plication, he was impossible to get into see. He kept cancelling his appts hours ahead of the appointment. Did this three times to me. I started going to Forest Park Medical Center for my fills because, well, he is absolutely inaccessible. Does not return phone calls, etc. Just wound up in the ER because of my band, and he was inaccessible. Not surprised at all. Of course, the dr in the ER refused to touch my band and referred me back to Dr Snow. I try to get into see him, and instead got referred to the true results office in the room next to his. For someone with a band slip who hasn't eaten in days, I would have expected my surgeon to show some kind of concern. At this point, I'm looking for a surgeon who will "adopt" my case, but the search for one has been discouraging to say the least unless I want a complete revision. His aftercare is horrid and scary... -
I had bypass in 1983. Long story short....I'm at 280 again... I am having bypass revision on Sept. 29. The best advise I can give you is this..the first time I had this done I thought it was a miracle. This time I understand that it is a tool. That IM responsible for doing what's right not the surgery. If you follow the "rules" and keep yourself on track...it will be the best thing you ever do for yourself..

Now I'm confused. In one post NoJess says she is a revision from a band to a bypass and in another she says it's RNY. Are both considered a bypass? As for taking 7.5 warfarin a day, do you have clotting issues or is the warfarin for afib? I'm on long-term coumadin (generic for warfarin) therapy and I don't take that much, although yours may be higher because you're at a higher weight. I was actually recommended sleeve over gastric bypass because of the malabsorption issue. Because of clotting issues, I also had a filter/stent installed before and removed after surgery. The filter caught 2 clots, so it saved my life. I still think that Lacie has been very clear and very fair in her postings about what happened to her at Hospital MI. She has not made any aspersions against Dr Garcia's abilities as a surgeon. I agree that she posted "in real time" about her experience in Mexico. Maybe it wasn't sanitized to the sweetness and light some wanted about the hospital, but it was her real and honest experience. I can honestly say that I'd have raised cain had someone approached me wanting to reinsert the needle she showed. I actually cried before my filter removal surgery because they had such a tough time finding my vein. I had 6-8 sticks before they got one that actually worked. Had I posted that day, I'm sure people would not have liked my post either. I'm also certain that I was somewhat dehydrated on the day I had that last surgery, which made it more difficult for the nurses to find a usable vein. BarbieB, I think you'll be well cared for when you go for your sleeve surgery, no matter which surgeon you choose. I also think that Lacie's experience and willingness to speak out about it will help others in the future.

I had lap band in 2013 but then in 2017 it slipped causing me to have severe reflux and in Nov 2017 I had it removed. My Dr said nothing about any revisions so I thought I could maintain my weight myself. Nope...I was right back to where I started. March 10, 2019 I had a Sleeve done by another Dr in which I was very happy with. I am really looking forward to the journey again in getting back to my happy weight of 170.

Oh cowgirlJane, any advice for me. I'd like to be just as successful as you. The reason I wanted the gastric is because after reading about others experience post revision , I didn't think one could lose all if the weight. But you've inspired me. Can you give me the date in which you has the revision , how long it took. Etc. thank you

Former Lapband Patient
Threetimesacharm replied to jen120's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
your story is similar to mine in that I have a lapband and was very active at LBT UNTIL I decided to have a revision to the sleeve; my surgery is in three days. The sleeve is permanent and the lapband is not. I am now glad to be getting a permanent surgery for my weight loss journey. Best of luck to you and keep posting!! -
I'd get VERY small fills and go very slow with any kind of change. If you keep having trouble you might consider revision to another band or the sleeve.

Getting Family Support for surgery in Mexico
Clementine Sky replied to nerd_is_inferred's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I just made one trip to Tijuana for the surgery, but have been there several other times for various reasons. I'd been in touch with my surgeon's office via email prior to booking the surgery. I volunteer about an hour south of Tijuana with my church group, so I've been to the city enough times to be at peace. When you are going there for surgery you'll be picked up at the border by a driver who has a pass for the medical express lane, which is must faster and simpler to get through. My surgeon's name is Dr. Fernando Garcia. I believe he does a revision, but I never researched that since I had the VSG. http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/369341-getting-family-support-for-surgery-in-mexico/#entry4174990 The coordinator he uses is based in the US and accredited with the BBB, if that helps provide any measure of reassurance. -
I had gastric bypass in 2013. It was a revision from lapband to bypass. Everything has been great as far as weight loss. I am pretty much at goal and have been for over 6 months now. But I have had issues that I question whether they are from the bypass. I never had these things before bypass. I have "low blood sugar" attacks. I call them that, and my doc's office agreed it sounds like classic low blood sugar. But what happens is, first my thinking feels a little strange, weak...then my body is weak, I feel very dizzy, I sweat - immediately am wet head to toe, have to lay down. I was told to eat Protein every 2 hours, and sometimes I do forget to eat that often...but it has happened even when I had eaten about an hour before. I eat 2 string cheese pieces and wait for this to pass. It is really scary. It has happened twice as I was driving my car. Next issue is that I have developed severe GERD. Never had it before, even with the lapband. I am on Omeprazole now. I have had bad gas lately too. I can feel it in my stomach and all thru my guts. The worst thing that happened to me, and there is no research linking this with bypass, I developed an auto immune disease 4 months after surgery. It is Alopecia Universalis. It means that your immune system attacks your hair follicles all over the body and your hair falls out all over the whole body. I am 61 years old. It is very rare for this disease to start this age. It is a genetic plus environmental trigger type of disease. But I have been reading and 80% of our immune system in in our gut. And there are people who have found "cure" for alopecia by diet change. That isn't scientific, but I really wonder...I had allergies and had a weak immune system before bypass and I really think that the bypass pushed it past the point where the alopecia could come into activity. There is no cure but there are treatments and I have shots all over my scalp every month of steroids, which fight the immune response. I now have eyelashes and eyebrows back and some head hair, although I can't go out without a wig or hat. That makes me wonder if I regret the bypass. I can't say I do. All my life my weight and my addiction to sugar have been a huge problem. As I got older it was harder to manage my weight and I am so happy to be back to my young adult weight again! Also, I do get dumping syndrome so I don't eat sweets at all. It has really helped me. Tracy

Dr david kim, colleyville, tx
dbrar88 replied to MissPrissBecky's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Dr. Kim performed my revision this past Monday (9/27). The only true pain I had that bothered me was where my port was. Other than being nauseous, no other issues. The Gastrograffin they make you drink tasted like Lemon Pine Sol. It was not so good!! Thank goodness I took my barf bag with me, because it came up immediately. But, they got to see that I had no leaks, but had lots of reflux and swelling. They ordered some stat meds and within 30 minutes of receiving them, I felt much better. It was hard to drink and get in enough the first day, but it is getting easier and easier. I stayed an extra night (two nights) total just because of my occasional nauseau and plus I live 5 hours away. They had no problem with that whatsoever!! Besides Dr. Kim coming to check on me the following day, I had 3 other docs/pa's checking in on my all throughout each day. I was very impressed with that (especially since I work in a hospital and most docs only make it once every 24 hours). They want you up and walking the hallway at least every two hours. I escaped by getting a wheel chair ride to radiology due to my nausea. But, like I said, after I got the magic cocktail and felt good, I was up and walking with no problem. Andrea was my night nurse and she is FANTASTIC!!! From my weigh in they took right before surgery until I got out, I seven pounds. It has to all be from fluids as there was no food consumption whatsoever! So, don't expect to lose while you are in the hospital!! I have doubled my intake today over what I consumed yesterday. Cold, cold Water is my best friend and taste awesome right now. I am also consuming the Optifast shakes. I could only get one in yesterday over about a 2 1/2 hour period, but today has been at maximum an hour....I am on my 3rd shake now. I haven't had any pain meds since leaving the hospital. Just soreness which is felt only when you try to get up or twist the wrong way. Yes, I would highly recommend Dr. Kim. I believe he did a total of about 6 surgeries on my day. I got moved up before one patient because she just mentioned she had some syncopal episodes in the past 8 months.....so they wanted clearance from her cardiologist before moving on with the surgery. I was impressed with their cautiousness. I truly feel I could do about 60% of my normal routine right now, but am taking it slow. You will be impressed with Dr. Kim and the hospital staff. No regrets on my part!! Good luck!!!!
