    Struggling

    I had my bypass five days ago and today has been the first really hard day. I woke up this morning and on auto pilot chugged a bunch of ice water like I normally would. My belly instantly let me know I messed up. I've been bloated and in pain most of the day as a result and honestly...I just want some freaking food. I'm lusting over a scrambled egg, cottage cheese, anything other than shakes or strained soup with protein powder. I hate that I feel sorry for myself right now! Sorry for being such a downer, but I would really appreciate some encouraging words right now from someone who understands.
  2. Hey all. I'm having RNY in a few weeks. My question is, do they ever take out the bypassed portion of the stomach and intestines or always leave them in? Why leave them if they're not used?

    Daily chronicles

    I am on day 4 after bypass and tried my decaf coffee with coffee mate and threw it up. Then for lunch I tried some strawberry protein shake and threw it up. I have kept down chicken broth, clear protein drin, hot tea, water with crystal light and sugar free jello, I am think maybe the coffee mate and the protein shake is too rich yet. Afraid to try the greek yogurt or pudding yet. Did anyone else have this

Yeah, as Arabesque said, NSAIDs are a big no no with your bypass, but better tolerated with a sleeve (our doc doesn't even restrict it to occasional use like that, though it's still a good idea to restrict it.) It is definitely a check with your surgeon thing, as they will differ as to what their experience tells them - some are OK with NSAIDs for an occasional day's use and many aren't, but a month would very likely be a big NONO. There are COX2 inhibitors like meloxocam that might help, they tend to be somewhat better than common NSAIDs on the stomach, but not entirely safe. The narcotics are a lot more restricted than they used to be, even at low doses, so those may or may not be appropriate these days. The warm rinses help with open tissue problems (like recent incisions or cavity) but this is likely more inflammation which tends to respond better to cold - try ice packs (or a bag of frozen peas) around the area for 10-15 minutes at a time in addition to the Tylenol until you can get a reading from your surgeon.
  5. I’m 2 1/2 years out from Bypass. Highest 227, lowest 138 and I settled at 142-144. I just had a recent weight gain for the first time and saw 153. Went back to surgeon, scheduled a nutrition appointment and trying phentremine for the first time. Back at 151 and this is part of expected maintenance. I can eat/drink just about everything except for bread, only in small amounts. Working on bringing some numbers back down and I know I have all the tools to do it.
  6. Good afternoon love! Just wanted to reply to your comment and share a bit of my journey with u. I had a revision in December from a VBG(first weight loss surgery approved) in 2004 to a gastric bypass do to esophogus issues, heartburn and major weight gain. I lost 46lbs after revision. The vitamins I see you posted are great but expensive. I have blood check up every 3 months have been amazing and i take a Bariatric vitamin from amazon. 16.77 month. My health is fabulous. Look into amzon for vitamins love. It will really save you money and they work just as well. Please take your daily calcuim after revision and you will be just fine. Good luck and God Bless you

    New to the group Vsg to bypass

    Hi everyone!!! I just got cleared (due to a lot of sleeve complications) to have my revision to bypass. I have GERD, gastritis, esophagitis and a TON of polyps I've had to have removed (a surgery every month since January, last one was yesterday) because of the high PPI I've had to take long term due to the GERD. A little nervous about complications, stricture, food getting stuck, etc... How has it been for all of you that had revisions?
  8. I'm looking at the vitamins online and I was wondering if those of you that either originally had the bypass, or those who revised to it, can tell me which of these looks better? I know vitamin needs for bypass are different than the sleeve.     Anti-Inflammation medication?

    Wisdom teeth pain is terrible. Keep ringing your team. I have a sleeve and my surgeon allowed me to have a NSAID occasionally (one at a time & not continuous days) from after my second year. But I believe the no NSAIDS rule is stricter for bypass & you’re only such a short time post surgery. You could always try a shot of vodka or scotch. I mean, shockingly now, they used to give teething babies a rum soaked cloth to suck until mid the last century. What about freezing a wet cloth & applying it to your gums or freezing fruit. Try googling natural baby teething remedies for other ideas. Your wisdom teeth coming through is really the same experience.
  10. I had my first bypass in November 2019. I did the dieting for 6 mos pre op and lost 50lb. Then I Lost another 18 during 2 week liquid diet. I started at 365. I assume everyone get lots of liquids pushed IV while at the hospital. When they weighed me after surgery I had gained 14 lbs. I’m freaking out going what did you do to me. Thank goodness my Doctor and nurses were great. Calmed me down quickly explaining why the gain. This week I had to have revision surgery as my pouch staples came undone. I didn’t lose near what I needed. Or thought I should of, but am reminding myself that it is a journey. I got a 2nd chance to finish what I started. Love yourself for being brave enough to take this step. I’m 250 now.

Anyway, the point is, it's surgery day and I'm trying not to get sick at the last minute and HERE WE ARE with the temperature at a high of 46 when we've been in the low to mid 80s the last 4 days!!!!! Colorado sucks. Went to the ER Wednesday night for insane abdominal pain and vomiting. 5 hours, lots of blood work, and a CT scan later, and there's no appendicitis, no intestinal blockage, no bowel blocks, and no sleeve leaks or rupture. What I DO have is a very large uterine fibroid that the doctor thinks might be causing the pain. Incidentally, I also saw from my blood work is my liver is enlarged and my kidneys and pancreas don't look to be functioning completely normally. Yay. This afternoon I have the surgery to remove the nodules from my duodenum. Wish me luck!!! Hopefully it's the last one and then I can be cleared for my revision from sleeve to bypass and then get back to living my life. In the meantime, guess I'll be looking into what can be done about the rest of this crap. So tired of there always being SOMETHING going on with my body.

  15. I am at day 8 post op after having Gastric Bypass Surgery with Hernia Repair. I am also struggling to get what my doctor wants me to get down. She gave me a chart and every hour I am supposed to drink 4oz . That is not happening. I am lucky to get 2oz most of the time in per hour. Today was the first day that I was able to from 8a.m. to 12 p.m. get a full 9oz of the protein shake in. I can't wait to have Cottage cheese. Right now I can have broth, Creamed soup and Low fat yogurt (I like Two Good) I drink plain water and Gatorade Zero and Crystal Light. I pray this gets easier, I have had pain off and on and also severe gas at times and I do walk. Gasx has been helping with that also.

    Two days post op

    the VSG was once part 1 of the DS. The DS was often done in two surgeries in the past - they'd make a sleeved stomach first, then would go in a few months or a year later and bypass the small intestine. But enough people lost enough weight after surgery #1 that they started offering it as a standalone surgery - and the VSG was born. Long way of saying - doing something like this in two parts should still work fine. I know you're wanting a SADI instead of a traditional DS, but the same should apply.

  18. I second Dr. Shillingford. I’m in Tampa and did everything virtually. The fee for the surgery as of November 2022 was $11,500 and there is a separate $300 program fee which includes the fee to have the mandatory calls (medical history overview, education class and nutritional class) but it gives you lifetime access to the support group which has 3 meetings per month, one with the nutritionist Dr. Lillian (co-chair of ASMBS-IH FL) and 2 with Sandy/Jennifer the RN (one educational with Q&A and topics, the other for those less than a year out, open floor). I used MD Now for the Preops exams, it was around $300, and the Doctor may require a Covid test even if the hospital does not. Note that the surgery is in the hospital or outpatient facility depending on your BMI. You can send them an email and they will answer pretty quickly, sometimes when I have questions, I get a response in less than 5 minutes.

  20. I had VSG, so my experience is very different. But I did find some helpful info. Sounds like the general consensus is that the bypassed portion of the stomach does continue to produce ghrelin (the "hunger" hormone), but that other changes, including an increase in leptin, may mitigate the "hunger" feeling.     Pancreatitis :(

    I just surfed Google for a few minutes and it seems that Pancreatitis after gastric surgery is not common, but one study said 1% after 3.5 years, and more common after sleeve than bypass. One site mentioned caused by blood clots, bowl obstruction, and gall stones. I know it isn't uncommon for people to have issues with their gall bladder after the surgery.

    Any April Surgery Dates?

    My gastric bypass was performed on Tues. April 4th. The procedure lasted 4 hrs since the doc was repairing a hiatal hernia at the same time. I was 2 hrs. in recovery so my fam was starting to get worried by 6PM despite the hourly updates. No complications. Pain was minimal. No nausea, vomiting or gas pain. Dry mouth from hell. Sipped water day 1. Walked a lap and up another time to use bathroom. Surprised they didn't walk me more. b4 going home. Day 2 . Tolerated meals well. Tried a little of everything they brought me. Discharged me that afternoon. Felt more pain at home. Mostly pulling on incisions as I bent over, stood or tried turning over in bed. Sipping on prescribed Hydrocod helps for pain. Walking on my treadmill every couple hrs for 5 minutes to prevent clots. Drinking my protein drinks and water for now till appetite returns. Not weighing till after inflammation goes down. Overall...so far so good. Pain lessens each day. Praying for a speedy recovery for all of you this month!!!

    Am I recovering TOO fast?

    Everyone recovers differently & can or can’t tolerate different things at different times. Not everyone experiences temporary changes in their senses taste &/or smell. Some can drink cold drinks easily while others find warm or hot drinks easier & more soothing. Some people are advised (by their surgeon) to progress through the stages more quickly while others need to stay at a stage longer. You won’t really feel your restriction (a tightness across your chest) until you’re eating more solid foods & the nerves that were cut during the surgery are healed. The pain you initially felt would have been from stressing, straining or irritating your healing tummy. You shouldn’t use your restriction or discomfort as a signal you’ve eaten or drunk too much or too fast. Not everyone dumps. Less than 30% with sleeve & less than 40% with bypass. But it is easily managed by avoiding those foods that cause it (fats &/or sugars) which you should be doing while you’re losing weight. In time even those who do dump may find they can eat a small amount of these foods without issue. It is important to follow your plan. Remember all because you can doesn’t mean you should. The plan is in place for a reason. Initially to protect & support your healing tummy (think of all those sutures & staples holding your tummy together) & then to support your weight loss (awareness of portion sizes, calories, nutrition, food choices, reflect on old eating habits & establish new habits, etc.) Conversations with your surgeon & dietician would be of benefit to ensure you are making the best choices - behaviours & foods. If your surgeon feels you are healed enough to progress more quickly, they’ll let you know what you are able to do & eat now. I am worried you chose to eat cake at 4 weeks post surgery. It was your choice but was it a self sabotaging behaviour? Cake at week 4? What will you eat in subsequent weeks? Only you know the answer to this. Maybe a conversation with a therapist will help. And yes you will lose weight while your calorie intake is in deficit even eating cake but your focus should be on the nutritional value of what you are eating when your intake is low. Protein, protein, protein then vegetables & eventually some fruit & complex multi/whole grain carbs.
