    Lapband Vrs Gastric

The biggest issue I seen with band in the office I go to is, if you don't use it as the tool it is, you won't lose the weight or can gain back. You still have to be responsible and have more choices. You need to be able to make the right ones. Saw a few patient that came back for gastric bypass because their band " didn't work". When I asked them about it as I was still preop and making up my mind. They said it didn't stop them from cheating. They could eat ice cream and candy and weren't losing weight. You need to be able and willing to eat right and try to beat the band. The band works if you use it right. Good luck again.

    Lapband Vrs Gastric

I was originally scheduled for Gastric Bypass and canceled. I simply could not justify rerouting my intestines and cutting up my stomach without trying something less drastic first. I also didn't want to deal with malabsorption and "dumping" forever, either. The Lap Band is reversible and doesn't change my digestive system, so I decided to get the band.
  3. My daughter had the bypass surgery. She lost 100 pounds in 6 months. However, she did have a dumping problem and unknown to her she had ulcers in the part of her stomach that was bypassed. This is a real issue for people who have a tendency to have stomach ulcers. Her ulcer went undiagnosed. They thought the horrible pain was a gall bladder attach. She had her gall bladder removed on a Thursday and died on the following Saturday of a perforated ulcer in that part of her stomach. So, for my husband (who had the sleeve done in August) and myself, having the sleeve on January 16th, there was no problem deciding. We went with the sleeve. Not everyone has this problem, but if you have severe pain, even years after, it is imperative that you get to an emergency room and have them call your bariatric surgeon. It could save your life.
  4. My dad is a Doc so he went to my first appointment with me, the Surgeon wanted me to do the bypass because I so heavy, I said no thank you I want the sleeve. The funny thing is that my dad is like 'Paola, he's the doctor, he knows best', I just refuse to have my organs moved around more than necessary. So the Surgeon said he couldn't force me and that was that. I am very afraid of all the malabsorption, and the dumping. In my opinion the most important part of both surgeries is that your stomach will be much smaller and you will eat less; therefore, why not go for the one that is a little easier on you and your body?

Denied because of only 1 WLS per lifetime.....

Seems like there was someone here who had the same worry. She was told that if she could not have the revision at the time of the band removal she was out of luck because only one per lifetime. Not sure how that turned out. If your policy states only one they will fight you so they don't have to pay.. It I wouldn't give in. Sometimes you can beat them at their own game.. But if it's written in the policy, they have grounds to deny it

    fell off the wagon.

You are here looking for help, that's a good start. Its not impossible to re-lose what you lost. You might consider therapy first then a possible revision 2nd... just my opinion. Its not hard to regain the weight, I am almost 2 years out and if I didn't keep track of myself I could go back easily. Do you still have some restriction?

    More support can't hurt!

Truly, not very long. But, I have a lap-band that was ruptured during a fill. So after a failed four year stent w the band I seen a new Bariatric doc and discussed removing the band. He suggested rny. That was in December. I drug my feet for a while and did some research and soul searching. Then seen the doc again in Late march. Paperwork was submitted in April and approved a week later. I had to attend a revision class. A week later after that I had my may 10 & 14 appts. If all goes well, ill have a surgery date by the end of may or early June. So I started attending the support groups last night. I'm seeing the dietician next week as well. Moving right along!
  8. I'm a RN too. I think that makes me more anxious thinking of all the things that can happen. That's also why I'm doing the band over a bypass, I have seen way to many horror stories with that surgery.
  9. OK, I don't know if this is true or not but I found this on a website: "the bypassed stomach remnant or body remains present because it still has important jobs to do – namely the production of digestive enzymes and juices and hormones which still play an important role in digestion and metabolism. Removing the stomach would increase the invasiveness and risks, magnitude and recovery time of surgery markedly and bring very minimal advantage." http://www.sasseguide.com/blog/what-happens-to-the-%e2%80%9cold-stomach%e2%80%9d-in-gastric-bypass/
  10. Yes I had my removed and bypass done on December 31 no problems the weight is a little slow coming off but it coming 30lbs so far down to 259 but I was told the revision lose slower has any one else heard that
  11. Does anyone know if it is standard surgical practice, just better, or irrelevant to empty the lapband prior to revision surgery?
  12. Two bands to bypass lots of scar tissue and adhesions 2/6/13. First 2.5 weeks lived in recliner chair. Everyone is different. My thought was sleeve but learned that I would have to have band removed recover be tested for Esophageal motility if was ok then another surgery for sleeve. Besides my good friend had a sleeve did good 6 months out now she looks like she gained it all back. The short of it was I would bypass the stuckness caused by band that could happen again with sleeve, for me my to band surgeries were easier than my conversion and I wished my surgeon would have warned me about the pain of cutting muscle/nerve. HW 250/1st Lapband 198/2nd Lapband 232/Pre conversion 2/6/13 to bypass 232.....Current 211

looking for someone who has been rebanded

I have a vg band which was put in Sept 07. A week ago, we realized it "slipped" and I need to go in for a revision surgery. My doc has taken out the 8cc's out of my 10 cc band. My new surgery date is Nov 5th. I am a little concerned that if my band slipped once, it may slip again? We think it was caused from a bout of vomitting (all night long), but doc says no one knows for sure. I have visited the gastric sleeve site, and it did intrigue me. But I don't have time to do all the research my doc is on vacation all week and my surgery is a week from tomorrow! So I would love to hear some success stories of people who are rebanded with the lapband! Bring it on!
  14. Well, the first time around when I got the band, one week wasn't quite enough... felt extremely dizzy and light-headed and the seventh day post-op, which was my first day back at work, I thought I was going to die. I've just had revision of my slipped band with plication, and took two weeks off to play it safe... only this time I feel great! Other than just very minimal pain the first couple of days I've been fine!! In fact, I feel so good, that I rearranged all my living room furniture yesterday and got the house completely decorated for Christmas, which was my post-op day 8... that might have been a bit stupid, but I still feel fine. How you will feel after surgery is an entirely individual process. Is it possible to "play it by ear" with your time off? Take as much time as you're able, but go back sooner if you feel like it?

    News Story

Hmmmm, I really don't know about 70 lbs in 3 weeks. That's very unlikely. 3 months, perhaps. Can you check in the next few days to see if they run a correction? The doctor will be flooded with questions from people who think that could happen for them. And while it's certainly nice to see an article about the band, I hat this sort of thing: "It's similar to gastric bypass, but without the cutting, stapling and intestinal re-routing." Um, OK, so how exactly is it similar? Duh...

    How do you decide?

When you first heard about bypass, they would only touch you if you were a minimum of 100 lbs. overweight. I've never really gotten to that point, but by the same token, I've remained upwards of 80+ pounds overweight for YEARS. It had even crossed my mind about ten years ago just to go for it and GAIN the weight so I could be within the acceptable range. I had never heard of the lapband before March of this year when I read about it in a magazine at my ENT's office when I went in to talk about getting tested for sleep apnea. I had no idea that people with a lower BMI could be acceptable for the procedure and I had renewed hope. At that point in time, they were still trying to adjust my BP meds up to where they would work. My GP was threatening that I was going to get diabetes if I didn't lose NOW. My sleep apnea test came back positive and I though, "This is IT. I HAVE to do SOMETHING." I'm a person who once I make a decision, it's full speed ahead, ZERO regrets. I have never looked back and I am SOOOOOO thankful for this opportunity. My life has literally started over.
  17. I found this website that has great information about sleeve vs. a bypass. This is only a guide and for information gathering only. https://www.obesitycoverage.com/gastric-bypass-vs-gastric-sleeve-surgery/
  18. I have chronic acid reflex and I have a hernia the surgeon wanted to remove the hernia and do the sleeve so that after surgery the heart burn that comes with the sleeve wont be even worse, but after my endoscopy the acid in my stomach is so much worse they don't think the repair of the hernia would do much so the bypass would be best for me I currently take up to 4 40mg of nexium a day to get by with heart burn
  19. Yesterday was my last weight in and the doctor called to say bypass would be best for me now so it has been submitted to my ins just waiting now

    Pondering Question to ask...

Thank you Ada. I initially lost 23-25lbs with my band, then complications started, lost restriction, husband deployed, and I started gaining back my weight. I started off at 270 with the band, the day of my revision, I weighed in at 263. So, I technically only lost 7 pounds with the band. I've lost 114-115 with just the sleeve in about 6.5 months.

    Decision time!!

Best of luck in your search! I did the same thing. I even signed consent papers for the bypass. Then went home and thought it over. I was really afraid of the intestine rearranging also. I agree, your kids are a wonderful motivator! Hang in there! If ins. denies, appeal, appeal, appeal.

    Decision time!!

Hi Welcome! You have come to the right place for loads of info on the Lap band. The people here are very kind supportive and knowledgable. I do not think you will regret your decision of the band vs. the bypass. Every surgery has its complications but the complications with the band vs. the bypass are minimal in my book. My uncle had the bypass ans spent the first month after surgery with many complications in the hospital and has lost over 100 pounds in a years time but he has told me his life will never be the same, he told me he has to be near a bathroom wherever he goes which defeats the reason he had the surgery in the first place, he has young children and wanted to be around as they grow up but he says the bypass has made it very hard to be at events for his children like baseball games , school recitals etc.. he wishes he would of known of the band prior to his bypass. He feels sick all the time and has constant stomach pain, vomiting , nausea you name it he has had it...I'm happy to hear you have had 2nd thoughts about the bypass and are considering the band. Good Luck to you. Please keep us posted on your decision and progress
  23. I had this problem, too. Someone said to me that they think surgeons get paid more for gastric bypass though, so this could be the reason for the push. Just sit back and think about it, lord knows we have enough time to.
  24. Well it was easy - they dont really do bypass here and if they did, no way no how was I obese enough to qualify for it. What would concern me about a bypass is the malabsorption issue and regain over the long term. Imagine having half your guts removed and nowhere to go from there and starting to regain weight. It would be heartbreaking. I simply didnt have a large enough weight problem to justify so drastic an action. I saw the lapband as much less drastic and for me, it has proven to be so. I was prepared to take the risk of anaesthetic - which lets face it, at a BMI of 35 and good health wasnt a large risk - but not to actually change my workings or risk malnutrition in the future.

Sleeve to bypass on August 18th

Hello! I'm scheduled for RNY Gastric Bypass on Aug 18th as well. Originally scheduled on Aug 3 but the surgeon had a family emergency and I had to reschedule. This will be my first bariatric surgery and I'm so excited! I've been on the liquid diet since July 20th because of the rescheduling and it's hard but I think it's good for me, getting me in the right mindset.
