I'm thinking this is gonna be a long drawn out thing and it's killing me!! Can someone fill me in on how everything is gonna go? I was told I would have to have 6 months supervised diet, but the lady on the phone yesterday told me 3 months.. I'm seeing Dr Weiss at bluegrass bariatric in Lexington! Any Words Of Wisdom?

I think most of us would be confused and unsure in your situation. It is difficult to be objective when things hit so close to home. Like Isereno said, health risks need to be considered. Your sister and friend had VERY serious health problems that have nothing to do with bariatric surgery. Your sister was saved because of having VSG, so if anything, she is the perfect example of why we chose to do something as drastic as surgery to treat our obesity. Going in to this I knew death and serious complications were a risk (as with any surgery) but inaction was going to bring me the same results, so I went for it. Your sister and friend had no symptoms and nothing came up during all the pre-op testing. Thanks to bariatric surgery they had a chance to fight their liver disease and cancer. When taking risks, sometimes we lose and sometimes we win, but I would rather go down fighting. I hope you choose to fight. Lastly, I suggest you call your surgeon today. He/she can answer some questions for you and can be more compassionate tomorrow. A big hug to you!!!!!

    Possible sleep apnea?

I've read that a lot of bariatric pal users, including myself, had to do a sleep study as part of your pre-op stuff. Agree with @@Margie122 . The more comorbidities the better, in a way :-(

    Binging

I was banded 12/11/08. Up until last week, I have been that extremely LUCKY one that had never felt hunger since banded. On 1/19/09 I had my 1st fill 2.5 cc in a max 4.0 cc band. I know my eyes want more than I need so measuring is a must 1/2 cup per meal is what I eat. Since 1/22/09 I caught a case of whooping cough...turned into bronchial inflamation... 4 trips to GP 2 antibiotics, then Prednisone(10 days) and steroid inhalers... This past week I have been STARVING. My meals aren't doing a thing for me ... thank heaven for work ... I can't get to food and my DH is trying to help by distracting me... when I can't take it anymore I get a prepackaged piece of string cheese or some type of protein. It hasn't helped my mental state that the scale keeps going up ...6 lbs this week. I'm trying hard to stay on the program and I feel I'm not that far off. I did call and talked to my support bariatric nurse today. She said it is the result of the Prednisone and I still have as many days as I was ON Prednisone that I will be feeling the side effects that many days OFF and could continue to gain. Encouraging ...yuck. She encouraged me to keep doing what I'm doing...if I have to stick with the solid protein...Once the Prednisone is out of my system my body will turn lose of everything it was hanging on to. All this said I still have the urge to eat everything and the kitchen sink! I want to scream, rant and rave. So thanks for keeping me at the keyboard right now...It is so nice to have all of you that understand and help me out. I keep telling myself this is only a short term situation and it will get better... I guess I kind of got spoiled with the no hunger thing! Anyway thanks for letting me spout off. Waiting To See If I Get A Fill

It's your surgeon's and dietitian's JOB to help you lose weight. They are better qualified to do that than anyone else you know, and avoiding seeing them is (as you've discovered) self-defeating. So many bandsters are embarrassed or fearful to admit their problems to their surgeons, but unless the doctor has a lousy bedside manner, I can't think of a single good reason to avoid a come-to-Jesus meeting with him/her. Your surgeon and dietitian already know that you have an eating problem, as evidenced by the obesity that brought you to their office i the first place. Every single bariatric professional I've ever talked with or heard speak at a WLS convention has expressed chagrin over losing patients to aftercare. It's very, very frustrating to them to have a patient drop out of sight. That said, I will also say that the prodigal bandster may not like what he/she hears when finally talking with the surgeon again, but sometimes we need some tough love to get us back on track.

    Anyone from Memphis or Collierville,TN?

I live in Desoto County. My insurance prefers St. Francis, covers more if I use them. I just switched PCP a few weeks ago. She is willing to refer me to a bariatric surgeon. I asked her to help me with the 6 month documentation....she told me to go see a dietician to do that. I will be her 1st ever WLS patient. What do you think? Should I be more agressive with her or go see a dietician? Thanks
  7. Hey, so, here's my situation. All the various people have signed off, so now it's just off to insurance. I talked to the team member doing the insurance submissions, and she said her goal was to submit to the insurer Blue Shield of CA, not BCBS) by the end of business yesterday. My insurer has a 5 business day turnaround for responses on bariatric pre-auths. So, here's my question: is it okay to call the insurer and ask if it's been submitted? Can I call after the five days? I ask because we're trying to get me on the schedule before the end of August, but they can't schedule my pre-op apt and surgery until they get the approval. I'm going on vacation for part of August, so if I'm going to be on liquid diet then (my doctor will do 2 weeks) then I will need to be doing that while on vacation. I am putting all that into place (have to have my preferred Protein shakes delivered to my hotel, etc...) but I'm maybe a little impatient about the approval. :-) Do you all call your insurer a lot? Is it okay to do it?

Chapter 2 - New Aftercare Doctor

ok, so I had my surgery with Dr. Kirshenbaum in Denver because my insurance would not pay for the surgery and I had to pay cash. I wanted someone with experience but not someone who was out to rob me blind. So... Dr. K was both and about $15K cheaper than anyone else I could find with his experience. One thing I found at my first fill was that he wasn't so good at after care. He didn't know how to tell me to know that I was filled correctly...so frustrated and water logged, I left with only 1.5 ccs in a 10cc band. That was 10/31/08. ON 11/07, I decided to call Fill Centers to find out what doctor they had available in Las Vegas for fills. They set me up with Dr Ricciardi a "Bariatric Physician", not to be confused with a "Bariatric Surgeon". I chose the annual plan with the promise that if I didn't like him that I could go to anyone else in the Fill Center network. Cool. Appt set for 11/20 at 9am. I was very impressed by his staff and by him. Turns out he is experienced and young and he trains other doctors across the country to be "aftercare" providers for bariatric surgery. How Cool! He listened, talked for about 30 minutes about what I've been trying and told me that I come to his office now for all aftercare. Awesome! So, he fills it 1.5 cc's and is amazed that I can chug a full water bottle with 3.0 ccs after only 8 weeks. I personally felt like he should put more but thought I should trust him and see how it goes. Next day all is well and I am eating around 1/4 - 1/2 cup depending on how much water I've had that day already. I think I need a little more so I'll set up an appt to go back in another week. Let's see how much I can lose this week without much restriction. I see many others who had surgery the same time as me are at 3.5 or 4.0 and have good restriction so I don't want to waste too much more time waiting for something to work... I'll give it til after Thanksgiving to see and then I'll make an appt. All in all, I was very pleased with my fill center experience. They gave me a lifestyle guide, access to recipes and other things on their website and called me for a follow up to see how everything went. I am pretty impressed.

    two and half years out

I have heard of this on this, Several times, on BP. And if I remember correctly, it was around the 2 year mark. Personally, I have not experienced it. Maybe get hold of your nutrionist from your bariatric team for suggestions. I specifically remember at least one person coming back and mentioning the issue had resolved, but can't recall how. On another note, it's great you have maintained your weight, relatively well. I never got down to my goal weight and have regained about 11 pounds! It's a real struggle to get it off.

    So tired of being sick

You know, I have been like that for the last year. I can only do liquids and mushy foods on good days. There are days where I can't even keep water down. My band has been empty for months. It started out as not tolerating fills, then not tolerating an empty band, now not tolerating the band at all. It turns out, after 14 months of tests, imaging, and appointments, I have a hiatal hernia. It was missed on 8 fluro's, 2 scopes, and by 2 other bariatric surgeons. It finally performed for them and without a doubt I have a hiatal hernia. They said once I get that repaired, all my symptoms will be gone. Unbeliveable. After this long, they finally saw the hiatal hernia. It is a sliding hernia, so it wasn't "performing" at the previous tests I guess. I'm just glad to know it can be fixed. I can't tell you how band I have missed salad!!! Last time I ate it, I landed in the hospital for 2 days for intractable vomiting. 5 weeks after my repair... I will be eating salad again!!!

I'm 3/4 of the way done with the program, and my bariatric program thinks I'll have surgery late October-early November. (:

    Anyone Read This?

When I was deciding between the band and the sleeve I read the study results that that article quotes... definitely changed my decision!! It just makes sense to me... you put something into your body that is not meant to be there and eventually you are going to get problems! Even though the sleeve hasn't been around for that long, and so there aren't many long-term stats, people have had gastrectomies for other reasons for years! For example people with stomach cancer... and those patients live long healthy uncomplicated lives. So even though it is new for bariatric surgery that type of procedure is not new at all. I found that that comforted me and helped me make my decision. Thanks for posting that link!
  16. Hey guys I really need some guidance and help right now. So I'm about 10 weeks post op and will be going to Myrtle Beach for a week with my family. I'm excited but I'm worried about food, anyone know places there that are bariatric friendly or ideas on what I should bring? It's just a simple hotel so all I can think is protein shakes? But with the stage I'm at am I able to eat protein bars? Or the meal replacement ones? Still not sure about snacks even though I'm not a snacker...any help would be appreciated. I can eat so much.

@@GummyTummy .Thank you for taking the time to write such a thoughtful response. I picked her because she set up successful bariatric program before coming to the current one and she was fully endorsed by the head of the bariactric program. That being said, I believe she is very skilled surgeon. She spent over five hour on my sleeve due to all the scar tissue I had from previous c-sections. But she seems to be only interested in the number of pounds loss. I feel she sees that number as her success not necessarily mine. I have to continue to supplement with Protein powder. There is no way I can consume that much food. As it is I'm averaging no more that 750 calories a day

    Vitamins????

Unlike other WLS, lapband usually does not mess with absorption of nutrients because you have not had any anatomy removed. Like the above poster stated, most traditional Vitamins are huge, which poses a problem for someone who can only swallow certain sizes. Also, bariatric vitamins do have a lot of extra nutrients compared to traditional vitamins. Some people at restriction cannot eat such a varied diet that is necessary to get all the different nutrients, so Vitamin supplements would be important there as well. My surgeon said I could use Centrum chewables and do a Calcium chew daily.
  19. On the The American Society of Bariatric Physicians website, you can locate docs by state. It's http://www.asbp.org/ Good luck!
  20. Just saw them, my surgeon's is off as well, the length of time he has been doing bariatric surgery and the % of his practice is off from what I can tell.

8 months out and need help!

I agree- knowing how much you need to lose, etc. will help. I know that I have to renew my commitment every single day as the carb monster beckons to me constantly. I suggest returning to basics- Protein first, lots of Water, and counting carbs. Of course the carb part is hard but it can kick start your loss again. Do you exercise? At six months out next week I am upping my workouts- I already do an hour of walking and an hour of water aerobics every day but I will be adding another hour in the water in the next few weeks to keep e losing as I struggle to get to goal. Finally- here is a hug! I feel you! Though I am still losing it is so so slowed down and I am sometimes disheartened.
  22. I love this discussion - just finished every post. I think I'm somewhere in the middle, but all I can really know is where I am, right? Because this truly is about knowing myself. I know where I've come from, I know how I feel when I eat certain foods, I know how I tend to eat on most days and I see the success my choices have resulted in. I know how exercise makes me feel, and how much easier it is to lift up my disabled son when I stay close to the gym. I know when I chase my head hunger with real food I can never get full. I know my partner from work and her best girlfriend eat everything they want with their sleeves but work out like crazy and are forever working not to go underweight. I know getting back on track is much harder for me than staying on track. I know all the bariatric "rules" are based on scientific studies, which publish data based on how the majority of patient behaved and responded. I know that sometimes I am in in the majority but that very few people can be in the majority 100% of the time. Yes, there are generalizations & rules that have to be made for the sake of effective communication, but I can choose to follow all, most, many or few depending on how my mind & body react. So, take the information you gain here, and from your own experiences, and learn from it. Learn about yourself, and you will succeed.
  23. I was glad to see this post and to read through it all, I found it interesting from all points of view. I would love to be a perfect bariatric patient but find myself somewhere in the middle. I work out pretty strenuously and track everything I eat but I don't make perfect choices all the time. My calories are always below 1000 but there's a day or two where I may not get my Protein. Combine that with being a slow loser and I often feel like a failure and beat myself up a lot. Maybe our mental state effects how we interpret other people's posts.
  24. I bought some high protein pancake mix from my bariatric pantry.com, and it was really good. I heated up some sugar free syrup and put on top and it was quite enjoyable. No funky protein taste and it has 15 grams of protein per serving. I highly reccomend!
  25. I had a sleeve and hernia repair done and then 45 days later had hardware removed from my knee. I would have the one that takes the longest to recover from first and then do the next one while still on leave. My bariatric surgeon wanted to wait 6 weeks after hardware removal to do my sleeve but I was able to reschedule the hardware to later as the recovery time for that was only a couple weeks.
