Alcohol 3 weeks post sleeve op.

Most insurance companies require a bmi of 40 or 35 with comorbidities for first time surgery but if you have a medical reason for needing a revision BMI can be less. -
Alcohol 3 weeks post sleeve op.
Nanajoy replied to Donna zariya's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Looking for advice on band to sleeve with Medicare. I’ve had band for 11 yrs. Very complicated health history. Staying thinner /healthier is imperative for me. I’ve gained back 30 lbs. My bmi is 29.1. Last time I checked several yrs ago it was going to be a problem to get surgery to revise to sleeve because I hadn’t gained all of my weight back and now my bmi wasn’t high enough Anyone else have experience with needing to keep weight down but not being high enough with your bmi now to have revision surgery done ? -

Well this just makes me sad. You're in your honeymoon phase with your sleeve and you're already thinking about the possibility of revision. And being self pay, and the steps you'd have to take to get said revision. It shouldn't be this way. I was curious about The Affordable Care act and what Obamacare covers. So I just looked into it. It covers substance abuse in every state. But only select states cover bariatric surgery. It makes no sense. I hope the pain in your chest turns out to be nothing, especially not acid reflux and you have a long and happy marriage with your sleeve! -
Hi everyone, I’m new to this forum and planning to have revision from lap band to sleeve. Lap band experience was not good a waist of insurance money. Is a month wait for approval the usual weight time?

Boy that's a lot of planning and hoops to jump through. Hopefully you won't need a revision. -

So i had sleeve done last Monday. So far so good. I do get some pain in my chest if i lay flat in a bed (Maybe acid reflux) but if i just prop up my head i am good. But never know if revision may be needed in the future and since i am self pay that could be a problem. here in Florida bariatric surgery is not covered under the affordable care act (obamacare) So i have been doing research on which states do. One in particular is South Dakota. So if i were to say move to South Dakota, establish my residency there and get health insurance thru the affordable care act, Bariatric surgery is covered. one great resource there is a company called America's Mailbox, where you can setup your own residency (in a RV) get a drivers license, south dakota plates ect... Think that will be my backup plan if one day in the future i need a revision which i hope i do not. -
Find out this week: May or June Surgery Date

Wishing you all all the best! My RNY was 4-5-22. Every day just gets better. My energy is still a lil low on purée 2 tbs plus liquids and shakes so not a ton of calories. All of my surgical incisions have healed. My surgery was on Tue and I was driving on Saturday for a pedicure and store run. My only advice is to toss the Food Bucket List! Start focusing on your goals of better health and go into your surgery as healthy as possible. It will help you heal and it sets the foundation mind and body for a healthy YOU. This surgery is only a tool, if you can’t wrap your head around what it means to have a different relationship with food you will risk regain and misery on the other side. My procedure was a revision after 23 yr. Pls know I would hate anyone to have my experience of regain, shame, and fear. I wish I knew back then what I know now! Tina 2.0 -
Can you ever drink soda again after surgery
Tufflaw replied to Happy Stylist's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I always LOVED drinking soda, it was my favorite (and usually almost only) thing I ever drank. When I was in college one summer we were on a meal plan where we got $25 to spend in the school cafeteria a week, Every week I bought 8 2 liter bottles of Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi (forgot which) and filled up a little mini-fridge I had in my room. I drank all 8 bottles every week. And that was just when I was in my room, that doesn't include the sodas I would drink throughout the day. And yes I drank them right out of the bottle like an animal. That was admittedly excessive, but for the next 20+ years I still drank a LOT of soda, had it every day with most meals and throughout the day. Preferably Diet Coke but I'd take Diet Pepsi if DC wasn't available. Also loved Diet Cherry Coke and Diet Cherry Pepsi. The caffeine never even affected me, I'd drink it right before going to sleep with no problem. I would definitely feel miserable if I went a day or two without, like caffeine withdrawal headaches. I had my last glass of soda the day before my first 2 week liver shrinking diet before my sleeve surgery, back in December 2016. The first week was absolutely miserable going without both food and soda but I managed. My doctor advised no more soda EVER so I followed his instructions and never had a full glass of any type of soda ever again since then, and honestly I don't even miss it. After a while I tried a sip once or twice when I was really thirsty and nothing else was around and I discovered that I can't stand the taste anymore. It's too fizzy, too saccharine, just unappealing. I really don't miss it. Even when I screwed up and put most my weight back on before I had my revision to bypass, I never started drinking soda again. I get bored drinking water so I drink tons of crystal light lemonade and I actually just found something new this week - I'm on vacation in Virginia and found a brand called Milo's that makes Sweet Tea which of course I can't/won't drink, but they have a Zero calorie version which I got and it's delicious, I already found a store near me that sells it so I'm going to start adding it to my shopping list. Good luck! -

I’m a revision from sleeve to bypass on 5/6. The sleeve gave me awful GERD and some regain. If you have GERD already I’d get a bypass to avoid the likelihood of having to revise. -

SleeveToBypass2023 replied to Imortalcandy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My thoughts are that you need a new surgeon. If you have reflux, DO NOT get the sleeve. It will likely make it a lot worse. I was able to choose between bypass and sleeve because my A1c was less than 7 and because I don't have any form of reflux, so I chose the sleeve. My husband has GERD and a higher A1c and was advised that bypass is really his only option. Sometimes those that never had reflux get it with the sleeve and have to revise to a bypass to resolve it. And while the sleeve has less risk, the bypass does give about an extra 10% of weight loss. So definitely find a new surgeon. -

Tina 2.0 replied to Imortalcandy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Can you consult with anyone else? There are huge differences between the two procedures. I have read several posts on here about folk’s revising the sleeve. If you don’t stick to the guidelines you can just eat less crap and still regain the weight. Tmw my con worker is going from sleeve 8 yr ago to a RNY. The doctor should really be looking at all of your needs and concerns to help you decide what is best for you. -
Hi Reese, I was in about the same situation but I revised from lapband to bypass. I got my band in 2012 and started having significant reflux last summer. I had my band unfilled which helped the reflux but I packed on 40 pounds. I went to my bariatric surgeon and talked about revision to bypass; they said I had to go through the whole program again, which I did. I had the band removed and the bypass done March 21. Reflux is one of the signatures of the band as well as the sleeve, I'm told. I wish I had known that in 2012 - I would have done the bypass then instead. Luckily, the worst part so far has been the pre-op liquid diet. That's just something you have to get through; after the surgery you're on clear liquids but it's easier because your new stomach is so small. My advice is to keep your eye on the goal and work through the tough parts. Good luck, I'm sure it will go well!

Revision Supervised Weight Loss Question
Daddyof4 replied to Juniper123's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi Juniper, I was in about the same situation. I got my band in 2012 and started having significant reflux last summer. I had my band unfilled which helped the reflux but I packed on 40 pounds. I went to Inova Bariatrics and talked about revision to bypass; they said I had to go through the whole program again, which I did. I did not have the supervised diet part and I continued to gain weight until I went on the 2-week liquid diet just before surgery. I had the band removed and the bypass done March 21. I have Federal Blue Cross and they approved as soon as I met the requirements, including cardiac clearance, primary care physician clearance, etc. I don't quite get where your diet supervisor is coming from; I had comorbidities in addition to the high BMI - reflux was one of them (high bp was the other). I think your doctor is right that the reflux should be enough because reflux is one of the signatures of the band. I wish I had known that in 2012 - I would have done the bypass then instead. If you stay with that practice you might be stuck (pardon the lapband pun) doing as the diet supervisor commands. Different practices have different rules. I like my practice very much but they're in Fair Oaks and Woodbridge, likely a huge trip for you. Remember, even though the pre-op diet is very difficult the reward will be worth it. You can do this! -
I had a sleeve in 2017 and told my best work friend and parents. When I started losing weight so rapidly, people thought I was dying, like from cancer or something. And I had no idea until said work friend came to me and was like “this is getting out of hand, how have you not heard anything, say Something!” Ha. Now I’m doing a revision to bypass and I am shouting it to the world. I’m so excited! And definitely want no one to think I’m dying!

Hey stranger ❤️ I bought one when I was first revised to bypass. I didn’t wear it for long because it wasn’t comfortable or stylish enough for me to consider it everyday jewelry. I may reconsider another one in the future.

Had my 2 week post-op appointment today and since the liquid diet and revision surgery, I’m down 30 pounds. Honestly, couldn’t believe it! Best part of the appointment was the approval to move on to soft foods though! Haha! Hope everyone is still kicking major butt! Good luck to all the upcoming surgery dates! Revision Supervised Weight Loss Question

I'm pretty sure I've seen people on here that have had revision due to GERD and were at or close to a normal BMI and I don't think they were self pay. I hope they see this thread and chime in. Best wishes! -
Revision after only a year of Gastric Sleeve

Revision Supervised Weight Loss Question
Juniper123 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Brief background, got lapband about 11 years ago (starting BMI was 43). I did well and kept off 55 pounds (BMI 33)... until I started aspirating at night. I had a barium swallow which showed a distended esophagus and a endoscopy which showed reflux. Doc said band needs to come out. I had band unfilled, and as I expected, I've gained weight. I've gained about 30 lbs in the last 5 months (current BMI 38). I want to revise to a gastric bypass. I am well aware that I need surgical help to keep at a healthy weight. Prior to banding, and since being unfilled, I'm constantly hungry and never feel full. I finally felt "normal" with the lapband. When I'm not constantly hungry, I can maintain a healthy weight. But, even with the extra 30 lbs, my BMI is still not over 40, which as I understand it, would make insurance coverage easy. (I have Maryland CareFirst BCBS) My doctor has me doing all the things needed for insurance approval for the revision, including being on a supervised diet. But I'm gaining weight. This does not surprise me -- there was a reason I needed surgical weight loss in the first place -- but I'm getting mixed messages from my doctor and from my diet supervisor (who works for his office). Diet supervisor tells me that I'm less likely to get insurance approval due to my weight gain since being unfilled and being on the supervised diet. Doctor has made vague statements saying that the reflux found on the endoscopy may be enough to make it go through insurance successfully. Diet supervisor wants me to lose a significant amount of weight in the coming month, to try to offset my gains, by going on the pre-surgical diet early. Very honestly, I'm hesitant. If I do end up having to get up to a 40 BMI to have the surgery (12 more pounds...), I don't want to yoyo any more than I have to. And if the reflux finding will get me approved, I don't want to starve myself without the benefit of surgical help. Anybody been in any kind of similar situation? I can use any advice or commiseration available. -
lapband removed hoping to have bypass

My insurance will not cover revisions. I don't consider this a revision, I have been 7 months since my band was removed. I have had my PCP refer me..now we shall see. Hopeful at best -
Eating terrible closer to surgery

Hi, as others have said, you're not broken. I'm not even approved for surgery and I've noticed that I've been eating more with that idea of, "I better enjoy it now". I'm hoping to get a revision but my insurance is unlikely to even agree to pay for WLS & I'm eating for two. :-o Sent from my Pixel 4a using BariatricPal mobile app -
Revision from RNY to Distal RNY questions
Nifer72 replied to Nifer72's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi! Sorry I haven't been around much. Did you have a Distal revision or a revision to a duodenal switch (they are different). Anyway, I'm doing ok. I'm calling it the surgery that wasn't. So I did have surgery on March 21st. Dr went in and had to clean a bunch of adhesions and fix a hernia before he saw that things didn't look the way they should. It wasn't the normal, expected RNY anatomy. He couldn't complete the surgery without coming up with a new surgical plan. As it was a 1 hr surgery had already turned into 3 from the adhesions and hernia repair. As of right now, I go back to see my surgeon tomorrow to see what our/my options are and figure out the best surgical plan for me. How did your surgery go? -

I've read on the forum many revise to a bypass if they have hiatal hernia and acid reflux. This wouldn't be an option for me, I had colon cancer and need to have yearly colonoscopy. Makes me feel its higher stakes with the sleeve as I won't be able to revise.
