  3. I spent the entirety of my six month insurance required pre-op diet program following a keto way of eating. I lost 100 pounds during that time, but, more importantly, I redefined my relationship with food which is the only way weight loss will be successful and sustainable long term, surgery or not. I have always been so thankful for spending that time, because post-op, your body is desperately trying to heal. I can't imagine how much harder it would have been to deal with the physical pain and challenges that existed after surgery while having to redefine my relationship with food at the same time. My advice is to try to start at least thinking about eating the way you should eat post-op. You'll thank yourself later.

    Embarassing...smelly body odor?

Yeah getting that water is hard, kind of like a full time job! But I will help! The reason I asked about the all protein thing. Was because people that eat a very high protein diet with very little carbs will fall into ketosis. Atkins like diets can cause "keto-breath," its caused when excess ketones in the bloodstream. one chemical component of ketones, the odor is accompanied by a foul taste in the mouth. When the body is in ketosis, urine may also take on a peculiar smell. The body's capacity to store glucose is limited, so when its reserve has been exhausted by fasting, skipping meals or strenuous exercise, it switches into ketosis mode even when you aren't following a ketogenic diet. The presence of ketones in sweat may give it an acrid, ammonia-like odor. Upping your carbs a little bit might help.

    Cereal

I've never been much of a cereal eater, even before surgery. If I want breakfast food, I'll usually have something like eggs (or egg bites) and chicken sausage, or Greek yogurt, or a protein bar. Occasionally protein oatmeal. There are some low-carb/keto cereals on the market with mixed reviews, so you could try those. They can be pretty expensive, though. Somebody in a keto forum recommended a brand called Wonderworks that's available at Target and Walmart.

5 years and it is never too late

As a Type I diabetic who is on an insulin pump, I can attest to the fact that insulin makes you hungry. The more carbs an insulin-dependent diabetic eats, the more insulin we need to inject. I am leery of the Keto diet. Carbohydrates are not eaten, so the body doesn't need to produce as much insulin, but doesn't skipping breakfast keep the metabolism in sleep mode? (burning less fat) Anohter issue I have, the amount of saturated fat in this diet is obscene. Definitely not lean or heart healthy. All that being said, it often causes people to lose weight, the problem arises when carbs are reintroduced and saturated fats remain in the diet. Sorry to sound so critical. I just know a lot of people on this diet, and I sometimes worry that some of the science is junk science.

5 years and it is never too late

My husband has diabetes and is a type 2. He eats keto WOE and his blood glucose is down, his A1C has improved from 8.7 to 6.5. He is decreasing his insulin intake also. He eats 1 time per day, only when hungry. We don"t eat processed foods. Our clothes are very baggy. Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app
  8. My surgery is Monday Dec 2nd. My pre-op diet was only two weeks and it has been 3 shakes and a small meal (4oz) of protein. The protein intake is important because your body starts to burn fat, and you have that period you feel like crap people refer to as the 'keto-flu.' I like the pudding idea - I brought some sugar free for post op. Sunday is my 24 hr full liquid only diet, well technically ending with only clear from 6pm - 12 am, then nothing after midnight. I have slow digestion issues (gastroparesis) so that could be little different for me.

    Over eating before surgery

They recommended for me, that I do low carb at 60g of carbs per day, but that was because at the end she didn't want me to lose too much weight and drop below my 35BMI deck. I don't and never did do keto as it's defined today. But honestly, keto is anything that is low enough to get you into fat burning rather than sugar burning. So basically anything below 50-75g for most people. I just never added in the stupid amounts of excess fat the "new" keto adds. Mine was pure Atkins in the original '72 version that said: ONLY protein adequate, only 20g carbs, and eat fat only to make it taste good. Eat ONLY until hunger is assuaged--but not until full. That's vastly different from most people's concept of low carb, which is that it is a protein and fat fest. I absolutely have to watch calories like a hawk! And I have to watch fat too and protein cuz I'm very good at gluconeogenesis. I've only ever eaten around 65-75g of protein daily. That's what my RD wants me eating now. LOL. Ironic right? The idea behind it is because ketosis brings hunger cessation, that you NATURALLY eat fewer calories and thus, lose weight (and you also burn about 400 extra cals/day just converting protein and foods into ketones and a tiny bit of glucose needed to run your body). Congrats on your loss so far! Chances are by doing what you're doing, your liver is gonna be extra pretty!

    Over eating before surgery

Did they recommend you do no carbs? I do almost a low carb, but like I said, I blew it this past weekend. I've lost 23lbs during my 6 moth, I still have 2 months left. I still eat some carbs though. I've tried keto and failed at it, I actually gained more weight. I just watch calories.

    January 2020 Surgery Date

Yes I totally agree I will not eat sugar free or keto. I will eat healthy and Whole Foods. I will focus on portion size for the rest of my life. I don’t even do sugar free now. I just can’t handle the artificial sweeteners or the sugar alcohols. I would rather just not have it. If I want something sweet I will eat a piece of organic high quality dark chocolate. Keto is just not realistic for lifetime and I love that my surgeon also doesn’t push us to go keto. He just makes it simple and straight forward like dr v. He says eat healthy if not then gain ur weight again. It’s simple. We have the tool we can either use or abuse it. A lot of the diet plans and eating plans r made by the nutritionist. My surgeon told me he has a small day in it. But he is just too busy with surgery and after care that he can’t focus on it.

    Slow Loser - Anyone else?

Don't be in awe of me lol I've had my fair share of ups and downs in this, but I found what works for me personally. Take what you want from my suggestions and toss the rest. But for ME, I noticed that I'm sensitive to carbs. I tend to respond better when I am at lower carbs. I don't eat bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, sugar, little to no salt (and when I do, it's pink Himalayan salt), or fruits high in sugar and carbs (grapes, bananas, and I limit apples). I'm not a fan of chocolate (if I eat it at all, it's in the form of keto brownies and I eat 1 small brownie every 2 days or so). I avoid Starbucks now (didn't used to and noticed my weight would stall a lot more). I avoid cow's milk (almond milk has more calcium and nutrients in it) and if I want ice cream, I get Rebel ice-cream from Walmart (2g or less of carbs for the whole pint of ice-cream, lactose free, 5g of less of sugar for the whole pint of ice-cream depending on the flavor). There's keto bread and keto bagels that I eat when I REALLY want something that requires those (my avocado toast is something I have 1-2x per week, or I have a keto bagel with sausage, egg, and cheese on it maybe once a week). If I want pizza, I get the ones that have cauliflower crust (omg so good), I have cauliflower rice, and mashed cauliflower if I'm wanting mashed potatoes (cauliflower has almost no flavor so it takes on whatever flavors it's mixed with). If I want sweetener, I use monk fruit sweetener (doesn't raise the blood sugar at all and actually tastes sweeter than sugar). If I want a nice flavored coffee, I buy the coffee shop coffee and make it at home, add almond milk, and put in Jordan's Skinny Syrup (no sugar, no calories, no carbs) in any flavor I'm wanting (they basically have every flavor you can think of). If I want fruit juice, I go to Walmart and buy the sugar free mango splash or sugar free fruit punch. Absolutely DELICIOUS. I drink a lot of flavored water with the sugar free powders, Gatorade zero, and Propel waters. For me, the trick has always been to eat within the boundaries of my diet while not feeling like I'm depriving myself. Everything tastes delicious and feels like I'm eating like everyone else, but I'm keeping to what I can eat without having to cheat to feel satisfied. I like sugar free tropical popsicles for a treat while my husband and daughter eat the regular stuff. We can all have popsicles together and I don't feel deprived or left out, yet I'm not breaking any of my personal dietary rules. I also make sure to change up what I do in my work outs. If you do the same things in the same order every time, your body gets used to it and the exercises stop being effective. If you do different exercises in a different order periodically, it will "confuse" your body and everything you do will have a greater impact. For me, not only does exercising help me lose weight, it also makes me feel good physically and mentally. I was 421 pounds and needed a cane to help me get around. Being able to hike 10 miles with my son means more to me than I can even express. So if you're working out, try to confuse your body as much as you can. I hope some of this helps you out. I never want anyone to think that my way is the only way to do things, but maybe something in here will give you some help with getting out of your slump and back to losing weight at the rate you're most comfortable with

    Liver Shrinkage Diet struggles

Apparently they called the first week of the pre surgery shake diet hell week at my surgeon’s office. There’s a lot of withdrawal symptoms associated with it (sugar, carbs, caffeine). Your cravings go crazy - you always want more the things you can’t have. Your emotions are all over the place which often makes you want to comfort yourself with food. On & on. Round & round. I was vey relieved I was placed on keto for the pre surgery diet. I had done the shake diet before. Two shakes & one small portion meal of steamed vegetables & plain cooked protein. Did it for 8 weeks & then again for 6 weeks a couple of years later as another diet I was trying. It ain’t easy even with one meal. Check with your dietician regarding swapping out a shake for a broth/soup. Some companies do offer them as well as shakes but they’re still going to be low calorie & go through you quickly being liquids. You’ve got this. You can do it.
  16. You have to work up to that rate. I'm 3.5 months and now able to do between 800 and 950, doesn't happen overnight. I tried to up my goal in my fitnesspal by 50 calories a week. I was at 650-750 for the longest time. I follow a macro plan which I set up in myfitnesspal. I aim for 35%carb 25% fat and 40% Protein. if I"m 30-30-40 that's fine too. been working well for me. Lots of people are put on Keto plans (high protein high fat low carb. i was doing that until my dietician told me my carbs were too low. so I adjusted...still losing. I'm doing 900-950 pretty consistently this week and happy with that. my goal was to get over 900 to avoid "starvation mode". awesome okay good I guess I'm just afraid of over eating. Even tho I know my calories before starting this journey was probly more 3000 range I just don't wanna fail at this and wanna know that eating 1000 calories will still allow me too loose. First word of warning: a lot of people find that they either can't tolerate or don't like the same things after surgery that they did before surgery. A VERY common thread on BP is "I used [X brand] of shakes before surgery and liked them, but now I can't stand them, what other brands should I try." So don't think you need to find your brands/flavors and stock up before surgery. The better plan might be to buy those variety packs to try after your surgery. As far as protein shakes, I stick with the premade Premier Protein shakes (the ones with 30oz of protein). For protein shake powders, I like Keto Chow and just mix it with water and not add the fat source (like heavy whipping cream or butter). I also like the Protein2O protein waters. For salty/crunchy snacks, the Quest chips and Asha foods popped water lilly seeds.

    Anyone freeze muffins?

It’s Dunkin Hines keto friendly. Made with almond and coconut flour. I don’t have the package for the muffins but I have the brownies here to try. They are two grams of net carbs, 0 added sugars and 3 grams protein. It’s kinda high in fat like most keto at 10 grams but has suggestions for ingredient swaps which would reduce that some (I made it the normal way).

Weight regain...I don't know where to start.

I know several people who swear by Weight Watchers (easier to sustain for longer periods of time than Keto is, because there are fewer restrictions), but some just go back to the way they were eating that first year. Not all the way back to shakes, but how they were eating around months 6-12 - protein first, then non-starchy veggies, and then, if you have room, maybe a small serving of fruit or whole grain carbs. If you're no longer tracking your food intake, than start doing that again as well. not everyone recommends calorie counting, but I really monitor my calories if I'm trying to lose a regain. I can maintain my weight if I eat in the 1500-1700 calorie a day range (but that's going to be different for everyone - you'll have to experiment to find your range). If I need to lose weight, I'll eat at the lower end of that range, or just below it. And I step up on my exercising. It's slow, but it works.
  22. There’s a lot of variations in the pre surgery diets. Mine was real food too - specifically keto. So I ate meat, eggs, full fat dairy, low carbs, non starchy vegetables & berries. Yours sounds like it may be keto or similar to keto too. My surgeon requires different patients to follow different pre surgery diets based on various factors - weight, blood work, results from various medical tests, etc. Sometimes the diet is not only to reduce the fat around your liver, but to lose some weight before surgery, break some addictions/cravings (caffeine, sugar, carbs, etc.) & /or get you thinking about what you eat. Best advice is to follow the plan you’ve been given.
  23. I'm a pretty picky eater, but I've always loved most veggies, Broccoli, green beans, etc., no problem. I had gotten off the cereals a couple years ago trying to lose, knowing I'm insulin resistant/PCOS. I lived on Atkins/keto 20g net carbs daily for a year and a half and only lost a small amount and that's when I knew I needed bariatric surgery. A week post op, now I am lower than I have been in years.
  24. Yes, I'm bouncing back and refocusing. I gained some COVID weight in 2020 and 2021 and was embarrassed so I haven't been on this site, but I started doing Keto/Carnivore in September and lost all the COVID weight by Thanksgiving. The Carnivore diet was successful but was giving me chronic diarrhea so I switched in mid-December to Weight Watchers' new Personal Points program. Evidently I needed a few carbs to make things function properly. It's going well, I'm not losing weight as fast yet, but I haven't gained any. Focusing back on why I had the WLS in the first place and on my original goal weight for 2022. It's never too late to be healthy.

Trying to get out of my head....

I'm looking into therapists. Not sure if it's a food issue or a trauma issue since I had a horrific childhood. My surgeon's office said not to worry about calories, also. They said to do 60-80g of protein, less than 50 carbs per day, and less than 50 fats per day. I'm more obsessive with the labels now than I was when I was on keto. It's also frustrating because in the 9 months I was on keto, I lost 100 pounds with only 1 short stall about 3 months in. It was so much easier to lose the weight back then than it is now. I'm fighting tooth and nail for every pound and hitting stall after stall. I worked out then and I work out now. But since it's such a struggle now, I'm finding I get panicky and start REALLY restricting what I eat. I've upped my work outs in both length and intensity, I religiously watch the labels and count every carb and fat in everything that goes in my mouth, and I not only don't eat junk but I don't think I even eat enough PERIOD. Yet here I am, day 4 of the same weight again. No matter what I do, I lose 5-7 pounds, then sit at a weight for a week, then lose 3 or 4, then sit another week, then lose 2 or 3 and the sit again. I have no issue with doing the work, but somehow I thought it would come a bit easier with only 20% of my stomach. It's harder to lose weight now than it was before the surgery!!!! Just freaks me out and my mind goes to not so good places.
