Getting A Little Discouraged :-(
Visionary444 commented on monie98953's blog entry in monie98953's Blog
I have a few questions that I am hoping may help you.... 1. If you were to lose 15 pounds every couple of months - and KNEW that you were going to lose that amount....would it assist you in feeling less anxious? For me, it would....but I would want to be encouraged to know that was certainly going to happen with all of my hard work. 2. Do you know exactly how many calories you are consuming? And if you do - do you think you will be satisfied with less upon receiving additional fills in the future? 3. Do you think that if you had chosen to do this without the band - that there would be a higher likelihood of gaining it back. (I've lost hundreds of pounds and always gained them back....and more) I'm hoping the band will assist with this for me. My heart aches for you that you are discouraged And I, too, am a self pay ($17K) and am extremely hopeful this is a tool that is going to work for me....when everything else has not. I've lost over 50 pounds on my own....and I am expecting the band to help me to continue and to keep it off this time. On a very positive note - your numbers sound hopeful to me (15 pounds in 2 months) - and if you are exercising....perhaps you are building muscle too! Have you measured yourself? Maybe that would make you feel less discouraged? I'm sending you some good energy....and if I can be of any help (I'm a newbie....but a really good listener!) feel free to let me know! Here for you, Lisa -
Not hungry, but had to start on full liquids today, so I made a yogurt shake w/protein powder and skim milk; managed to down 1 cup. Still not hungry. Largely off the Loratab but the other drugs are a must and they make me quite dizzy. Unfortunately, the nutritionist neglected to tell me how often to eat(every 2, 3, 4 hours? When hungry?) and how much? All I got was, "take in 1000 calories and 65 grams protein a day". Still trying to figure out how I'm going to manage to get the right balance of fruits & veggies in when I'm on real food.

I am 10 months out and down 120 pounds with another 100 to go. For over a month now I haven't been losing weight and I have been trying so many things. On average I get between 30-100 g carbs a day (on the lower side majority of the time, including fiber) and like 20-30 grams of fat and 60+ g of protein. I even am trying taking alli even though I don't eat much fat. I exercise and get 7 thousand steps a day and 4 flights of stairs at minimum. I get all my liquids in and eat between 800-1000 calories. I have even tried calorie cycling by going up to 1500 and then back down to 800 but even though I lost some doing that it didn't last. I am at the end of my rope and need some help or advice or anything!

Am I Getting Enough Calories Post-OP?
FreeToBeMe posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi All, I am a little worried about my calorie intake. I am in my third week post-op and I average around 300 calories a day. I drink one high protein shake in the morning and then eat about 2/3 of an egg with a little reduced fat cheese in the evening. Also I supplement with protein water to get that in. I just don't feel hungry and I am losing weight well but I am worried that my body is going to suffer taking in so few calories. My surgeon's office says don't eat if you are not hungry but still... I appreciate any advice. TIA, Pennie -
Of course, you should do what your doc says..... but here's my experience - restriction has so much to do with not getting hungry between meals, and so until you get there, no snacking can be very hard to do. When I got my latest fill, I was getting hungry before dinner, so I called my nurse, and she said to add a small snack, such as yogurt. For me, if I get too hungry, I will eat more than I need to, or eat unhealthy foods. So long as you are sticking to your target calorie goal each day, I don't see how a 100 cal snack could hurt, especially if it keeps you from overeating later.

Today I had my normal Breakfast, a high Fiber low calorie English Muffin and 1 oz of cheese. It took me about the same time to eat it as it always does. About 45 minutes later I felt so full I was nauseous. I had my lunch later than normal because I was so full. By the time I ate lunch I was hungry again and feeling fine. I had another English Muffin and 1 Tbs of creamy Peanut Butter (usually I'll have 1/4 C of egg salad, but I ran out of eggs). Again, I felt fine until about 45 minutes later and then was super full. Now it has been 7 hours since I ate lunch and I still feel over full. I'm having trouble even drinking Water because I feel so full. What did I do wrong? Has this happened to anyone else?

Okay, I don't think this whole lap band thing was explained to me real well! Yes, I was told that is was only a TOOL and not a cure! Some of y'all are watching your carbs while others of you are counting calories. I noticed that some of you keep your calories between 800 and 1,000 calories daily. I have been told by doctors and other people that if you cut your calories too much then your body goes into "starvation mode" and holds on to everything and you won't lose. I don't see how I am going to get enough calories eating 4 ounces of food! My doctor said to eat 5-6 times daily but still even at that I am not consuming many calories at all! Does your body just eventually realize that this is what your body needs? Please help me understand this!

Am I blowing my chances???
climbthestairs replied to decamom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello, Our stories are similar. I was sleeved about 6 weeks ago on 26 April and got very sick after and ended up back in the Emergency Room with pnuemonia. I have also had a slow recovery and have lost only 21 lbs since surgery. I am drinking 100 oz of Water and trying to get 100 g of Protein each day. I also swim 1 mile 4-5 days a week and I dont understand why the scale is not moving quicker. My doctor has said to keep calories below 600 and carbs under 40. Something I was not counting carbs/calories of until yesterday was the Vitamins and Calcium pills. I was surprised that each of them had 3 carbs each and I am taking several of them per day. So started yesterday counting those in my daily totals and will see if that makes a difference. Dont have any advice but I am in a similar situation as you. all the best!! -
Am I blowing my chances???

WOW, I guess everyone's bodies are truly different... a month or so ago I tried one week of calories 600 or less, Carbs under 35 and I kicked in more excersise. I lost .08 of a pound,.. not even a full pound in one week... I had several people on the forum and the nut at my doc office tell me that I goofed up by kicking in excersise and reducing my calories so low that my body went into "starvation" mode... I was not providing enough calories to keep my metobolism up.... I only tried it that one week, I had hoped I would see this 5-6 pound loss and was so extremely disapointed to not even lose one single pound... Ever since then, I have been around the 1200 - 1000 calorie mark, I keep my carbs under 50 and I am always consuming some kind of protien every 3 hours during the day,,, It is working great for me! Maybe you could talk to your nut again about too low of calories, you need fuel for your body to burn ... few calories is not giving you the fuel... Good Luck.. -
How Much Restriction Is The Right Amount?
jen120 replied to telby's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There is a topic in this forum with lots of people responding about having no fill. Check it out...No Fills LBT I'm going to cut and paste my post in that topic..... I had surgery May 23rd and do not have a fill. I don't have a lot of restriction and I could eat as much as I wanted if I let myself. But if I stick to my right portions and follow the instructions, then I am not hungry in between meals, which is what I want. I eat 1100-1200 calories a day. I dont ever get "full", but I am satisfied. I've never been stuck, I've never thrown up. I saw my surgeon 2 weeks ago and together we decided on no fill because right now things seem to be working. I'm losing weight consistently and do not get hungry. That doesn't mean that sometimes I dont crave food or that I dont want to use food in the destructive ways I used to. I have "head hunger" all the time. It is as much a mental game as it is a physical one. But without the physical hunger, I am able to talk myself out of the mental stuff. I'm plan on getting a fill when one of 2 things happens... 1) I start getting physically hungry in between meals 2) If I start eating larger and larger amounts of food or start binging (had problems with binging for many, many years) -
Ice cream is liquid, right? I think we so often do these things because our powers of rationalization are so very strong. "I haven't been able to eat for days, I need the calories. Plus I've been hurting so bad, a little ice cream treat will be so great!" "The cold of the ice cream will help any swelling." Big thing is, you have recognized it, and are addressing it. WAY TO GO! Most of us are self-medicating food addicts to one degree or another. You are worth the effort to eat right and make good choices. A little treat once in a while is fine. Just be sure you are aware it IS a treat.

How did you determine a WL goal?
Jachut replied to nfl1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've never been 70kg as an adult, I always hovered around 78-79kg before I got really fat. My healthy weight range is 63-79kgs, you can find healthy weight charts in a million places, in every calorie counter you buy for example. I knew that at 79kg I never felt thin. I was chunky, definitely not able to wear what I wanted and at that weight (which is about 180lb or so) and 5ft 10, I was definitely sized out of regular clothing at an Australian 16 (American 14 or so), I had to buy fat old nanna clothes and I loathed it. And I just knew, going by the covering of fat I had, that it was still overweight for me. So I set 70kg as a goal. My surgeon never asked but the nutritionist I saw for one visit did. She told me it was overambitious and not likely to happen. I ignored her, her nutrition advice was pretty generic and crap too. Having gotten to this weight, i can see I am not "a big girl" or "big boned" like people always used to say about me as a child and teen. I was never obese but always hefty. I am actually quite fine boned and lightly muscled and I am not meant to be at the heavy end of my weight range. My weight at the moment is just fine, but I could easily be 10lb lighter and not be too thin. Yet 5ft 10 and 145lb or so on here seems to cause screams of "you'll be scrawny, it'll look horrible". Its a moot point anyway since I dont seem to be able to move from 154. -
I Think I'm In The Lose Weight Slowly Zone
Neoteric Verve posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
And I'm not complaining. I had at one point a goal weight of around 220lb and now.... Well my first "real" goal is to get under 300lb and go from there. Coming from 440lb I think hitting that would be incredible. As of today I am but 28lb away from 299. If I play it right I could be there by the end of next month. Six weeks to drop 28lb shouldn't be too hard (I hope). One thing's for sure, I am getting tired of buying new work clothes (ok not really). It amazes me that at the times where I feel I eat too much I actually lose the most. And will someone explain to me why/how it's easier to eat carbs as opposed to Proteins? At this point I am 29 weeks removed from surgery. I am up to eating 1,400-1,900 calories daily. Once I think I went over that but that was months ago. I feel normal. And really, that's pretty much all I wanted. One day my body will catch up to my new eating habits and I'll be golden. -
So proud of myself~! Have to share!

Wow! You are doing awesome!!! Congrats!! I'm 8.5 weeks out and down 47lbs. Can I ask how many calories you are taking in per day? I stalled for a couple weeks recently so upped my calories. It restarted my weight loss thankfully. I'm getting about 1000 cals/day now (while stalled was at 700) but feel it's too much even though I started losing again. I don't know.... Just curious where you're at calorie wise since you're so successful at this. -
Calories?
healthier&happier4life replied to pepitared's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm only 2 1/2 weeks post op, but they told me to focus on Proteins & fluids. I agree that it is strange to be eating so few calories, but it's part of the post op plan. Also, as @@Djmohr mentioned, the Vitamins are important. Oh, and getting enough sleep! Good luck! -
Follow your surgeon's orders. My surgeon told me my liver needed to shrink, so the preop diet is needed to do that. I have followed a very low carb plan, taking vitamins, more activity, and roughly 1200-1400 cal plan per day. I have not begun protein shakes yet. I see my surgeon Thurs morning this week, so will officially start preop diet then. Good luck! I believe my surgery will be either May 27 or 31. I was told that I have to do a 2 week pre-op diet by my surgeon's office. I decided to begin a week early and do 2 protein shakes per day along with one healthy meal. Today I had to start the surgeon required portion of the diet and I was told that I could have 2 shakes per day, and could only eat soup, SF jello, and SF popsicles, though no specific calorie limit was set so now, I have absolutely no idea how many calories I should be eating. Last week I kept it at 1200 per day with a lot of success, I wasn't hungry and I lost 6.5 pounds. Today I've had only 535 calories and I'm not starving, but I am hungry and am not sure if it's ok for me to go up to 800 or if I should try to keep it around 500 - 600 per day. Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcome! Thanks Erin Source: Pre-Op Diet

Does anyone have huge fluid in their band
honk replied to seeme1954's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Yes I would say I am in the green zone. I also have an appointment with an oncologist tomorrow to see if there's a reason why I'm not losing more weight. I eat less than 1200 calories a day and exercise an hour 7 days a week and I am in a major stall. -
Six month stall...
ouroborous replied to ouroborous's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well I'm going back to calorie tracking. Every time I've done that rigorously, I've found some source of "hidden" calories. -
Down another pound so I guess I didn't eat too many calories yesterday at all! yippee. Its so weird because I feel like im eating until im full, therefore it defies my logic on losing weight. In the past if I ate til I was full Id gain gain gain. I really have to start thinking like I have a band now. 8:00 am Breakfast: Atkins shake w/one scoop chocolate unjury protein powder blended with ice. I love days that have lots of chocolate in them :laser:. 11:00 am Snack: SF chocolate pudding. 1:00 pm Lunch: Finely chopped pork chop about 1/2 of one + 2 TBS miracle whip. SF Chocolate pudding. Im craving chocolate!! 5:00 pm Supper: 1 cup at most chili w/ground beef + 6 saltine crackers. Too many crackers!! Vitamins: 1 Viactive multi 2 Viactive Caliciums Water: 70 oz. Goal: Cross my fingers and hope I didn't gain today!!

I'm 5 weeks post op and can do toast. So far I've only tried those thin sandwich thins (100 calories for both sides, I can only eat 1 side).
-
Sad to say I have yet to measure out any of my food. Like you I don't know how much I can officially eat, but I have pushed the envelope several times. Things that I don't think should fill me up as much as they do, do and then I'm miserable. However, when I eat carbs, it seems to take longer for me to get full...go figure. No worries though. My intentional bad carb eating days are behind me. Getting a food scale is on my To Do List. So is measuring out a serving. Calorie dense foods that are great sources of protein are shrimp (1 large is 9 grams of protein), and talipia. I think 1 piece or a serving is 90 or less calories and 20 grams of protein.
-
Don't look for that scale to move everyday or you will get your feelings hurt. Keep calorie count, kinda low carb and exercise will get that scale moving .....weekly.
-
Hmm no movage on the scale today, big surprise! Well today I am going to exercise. Tonight Im having supper with my grandparents so we'll see what ends up being on the menu. 8:00 am Breakfast: 1 instant cream of wheat, 1/2 c. calorie countdown milk, 1 SF chocolate pudding. 11:00 am Lunch: LQ Chicken Fettuccini Alfredo.. my first noodles since banding.. I've died and gone to heaven. No problems eating it whatsever, I made sure to eat the chicken chunks first, 21g. protein, 280 cals., delish! 3:00 pm Snack: 1/2 avacado mashed, 10 Kashi crackers. 6:00 pm Supper: 1 c. mashed potatoes, 1/2 cup of pork chops, 1/2 cup of mushroom gravy, a few bites of creamed cucumers. Vitamins: 2T. Liquid multi, 1 Calcium chew, 1500 mcg Biotin Water: >64oz. Exercise: 25 Min. 3 mph 5% incline, 2 Min. 4 mph no incline Goal: I ate about 1300 calories today, Im curious to see if any change occurs on the scale, I may be eating too much.. Eat less tomorrow if the scale doesnt move in the negetive direction. Im going to be so busy tomorrow im not sure if i'll get to exercise.. we'll see. Ohh and btw I only had 1 pudding and I did exercise! yay.

How do you get all of your protein in?
Mel Mel replied to Lch8's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I try to focus my meals around protein. For breakfast I'll make a veggie omelate with egg whites for extra protein and less fat and calories. Lunch and dinner I'll have a turkey burger with grilled onion on it and some veggies, or turkey chili with beans which provides fiber and protein, or chicken or fish with veggies. I'm not ready for raw fruits and veggies as per my nutritionist but I would eat grilled chicken salads. Since I have no fill yet I snack on yogurt which also has protein. I do eat carbs like whole wheat toast once in awhile but try to limit that. I do supplement with isopure ready to drink, half a bottle gives me an extra 20g of protein a day.
