    Day 1 Liquid Diet

There are lots of different pre surgery diets. Mine was 2 weeks keto. But generally they’re either two shakes & one meal or three shakes only. With these the first week (or there abouts) seems to be the most difficult. You’re breaking lots of habits, cravings & addictions (caffeine, sugar). Plus if food was a comfort for you this is also ‘taken away’ from you so it can be more challenging because of the emotional/psychological roller coaster. It’s all so very worth it though.
  2. I'm finally mustering up the guts to ask for help. I am 5' 2" and I had gastric sleeve at 205 lbs. My struggle with weight has been life-long. I dropped down to 155 and I was actually quite happy there, as I was down to a size 10. I consumed about 900 cal/day at that point. Everything went to hell in a handbasket when COVID hit. I truly do not mean to make excuses, because there are none, but there were situational issues. My husband was hit severely early on in the pandemic, the kids were doing remote schooling, I was out of a job, I wasn't exercising and I chose to deal with all of this by getting diet sloppy. And the weight has just been creeping up. I am now at 190 lbs. What's even worse, is that according to the 13cal/pound calculation, I would need to eat 2470 calories per day in order to maintain a weight of 190lbs. I don't come close to that. I average 1600, and usually not even that much. My metabolism has always been a problem, which I suspect lots of people can identify with. I have tried Keto and Atkins on and off, but they are not sustainable for me. I read up on Pouch Reset, but then also read about the weight regain. I'm considering intermittent fasting, or simply using my Baritastic app and dropping it to 900 cals. I even looked into a revision, but that wouldn't solve the core issues, which I can't even identify at this point. I'm so ashamed by this. I've made a mess of this but at the same time, I'm committed to fixing this problem. Help? Thank you...

    Bad taste in mouth

Maybe Keto Breath rearing its Ugly Little Head, may have it for a while until Your Rapid Fat- Burning slows a LITTLE, keep washing out with Mouthwash and PLEASE believe me, You have the Taste but it's doubtful anyone else can smell ANYTHING. Just a small price to pay for all the things that are wonderful coming true in your LIFE.

Hunger 3 years post op, Regain

I swear if you give it 4 days, with water only and unsweetened black coffee and unsweetened tea...try to minimize the sweet--then also go keto. You will feel such sweet relief from the hunger. It takes 3days to 2weeks for some... But once you feel that absence of hunger...man. It's a no-brainer! I still have times when I have to do that...
  5. Please help! I'm a collector not a hoarder. For decades I've curated a gorgeous wardrobe of flattering elegant clothing at every size for my body from 2 to 14. Now 2 years post surgery I'm a 2 yet again and after a LIFE of yo-yo-ing I'm terrified of donating it all in case it's harder to maintain than I think. Whether my weight was going up or down one good thing was I always had lovely things to wear that fit my shape and I didn't have to spend the time or money on a wardrobe because I wear classic pieces that I buy on sale. Of course I always wanted to stay smaller but as we all know that's not always in our control. It drives me crazy when people say oh give your clothes away so that you can't go back to being fat as if we got fat logically instead of emotionally. So if the surgery is indeed for life and I'm not going to gain a bunch of weight then I am completely on board for donating all of it if I'll never wear it again but I will be furious if three years later as has happened throughout my life i'm chubby again for whatever reason and have to go buy fat clothes again. I don't have the money for that. With surgery I went from 215 to 160 but it took going "keto" (high fat low carb diet) to get to 135 where I am now. (having done the hCG diet multiple times in my life and lost lots of weight I am understandably very nervous about gaining again.) so what do you think the odds are keeping this weight off for life? Thank you for understanding this emotional time for me! (I just moved and can either store or donate as I don't have lots of room. Storing in a "pod" is way cheaper than replacing in a few years. Thank you for your wise encouragement.

    protein powders

I tend to use the premade Premier Protein 30g shakes (for convenience and because they have the right consistency for me), but if I do use a powder, I use Keto Chow. They have enough different flavors to keep me from getting too bored.

    Is anyone else always Thirsty?

I dont sip. Havent since couple days post op gastric bypass. I'm thirsty too but we are basically on a keto diet after surgery. When I was on the keto diet before surgery I was always super thirsty. So I think that might be normal. Not sure on not drinking before, during, or after. I can tell when you when I didnt adhere to that rule and ate too soon after I drank, I could only fit 2 or 3 bites in because my stomach was already full. I go tomorrow to have my 6 week check up with blood draw. Have they checked your blood yet for any deficiencies?

Yes I totally agree I will not eat sugar free or keto. I will eat healthy and Whole Foods. I will focus on portion size for the rest of my life. I don’t even do sugar free now. I just can’t handle the artificial sweeteners or the sugar alcohols. I would rather just not have it. If I want something sweet I will eat a piece of organic high quality dark chocolate. Keto is just not realistic for lifetime and I love that my surgeon also doesn’t push us to go keto. He just makes it simple and straight forward like dr v. He says eat healthy if not then gain ur weight again. It’s simple. We have the tool we can either use or abuse it. A lot of the diet plans and eating plans r made by the nutritionist. My surgeon told me he has a small day in it. But he is just too busy with surgery and after care that he can’t focus on it.

I had a lot of success with Keto Chow and I'm looking forward to utilizing it again. Tons of flavors and recipes. I think I'll need to modify the base recipe at first, but you never get bored with Keto Chow. 😁

    Looking for other newbie friends!

You have a date! That's exciting! Not going to lie- the two week liquid diet is hard, especially the first few days. But after day 2 or 3, I got in a zone. I journal, and I think that helped me the most. Before my two week shake diet, I had to do 2 months of a keto diet. I think that was harder because I was still allowed to eat! Taking the option away was easier for me at least. I did have a "last meal" before the two weeks of just shakes. I sure didn't tell my surgeon that though! ???? You are so close! My fiancé and I were just saying, the whole pre-op process was so stressful and at times, nerve wracking. But it has been much less stressful in the past week for sure and for that, we are thankful! I haven't had complications thus far and hoping to stay that way. Has your doctor required anything else besides the two week diet? Is it a liquid diet?
  12. Ive been thinking about this thread for a while and thinking about what food triggers me to want to eat lots of it. (Sorry that it's not really what the original poster really meant by this phrase.) ..-and I finally came up with my real kryptonite. Although I love cheese, my real kryptonite is...duh duh duh...CARBS! I love carbs! I am addicted to carbs! Food like various breads and doughy treats are my absolute biggest trigger to overeating. In fact, I'm trying (a modified) Keto just to see if I can get some controll over them. Food addiction sucks!

    Help! Thighs are dying!

Except here's the thing. You had sleeve. We had gastric bypass. We can't add in those carbs needed for stuff like HIIT without getting dumping. My friend who had the sleeve can eat cake and feel fine. I would be dead on my butt for four hours sweating and puking. I can't even tolerate one bite of wheat bread. Bypass patients are forcibly on a ketogenic diet since we can't have carbs or fat. My ketone levels are through the roof simply because I can only eat keto-friendly things. I am almost 8 months out and still not supposed to really have peas and that sort of thing because of the starch. We're supposed to add in those things veryyyy slowly. My trainer wants me at 100g of protein a day and 100g of carbs. My dietitian says I shouldn't be anywhere near 100g of carbs yet - that's usually between 12-18 months. She agrees with the protein, but acknowledges it will be difficult. We agreed on 90g of protein a day. I still can't physically get in more than 50g of carbs a day without being full and/or sick. So, doing weights and squats and everything OP is talking about - she isn't nutritionally ready for. It is essentially just eating the muscle you are trying to gain because of such a severe deficit. There's nothing wrong with being safe and waiting a few more months to incorporate the gym into the routine.

    Keto diet?

A quick google search will tell you everything you need to know about this type of diet. It's very similar to what most bariatric surgeons recommend after surgery. Atkins is considered a keto diet. It doesn't automatically equal high fat. The basics of it are meat, dairy and vegetables.
  15. If you are interested I know a KETO group that the owner makes all of your menu's and is a true go getter. She is also a WL peeps. She herself had WLS. This could be interesting. If u want me to post her name just let me know and I will post it on your page. Glad you found this group.

    Anyone freeze muffins?

What keto muffin mix did you end that's "super good"?
  17. Wow...you guys are brave...donuts? Tamales? Do ritos? Here is am trying to eat sugar free yogurt 😳Popsicles. I tried two bites of extremely moist meatloaf and was sick all night long. I can't even eat tomato soup. The acid of anything even a mashed boiled egg keeps me burping sour nasty burps. The only thing that went down smooth was a protein shake I made with bananas, peanut butter and fat free milk. I am planning on Keto dieting after I heal. If I can take it. Artificial sugars make me so nauseous. I am going nuts hungry and sick of jello, BROTH AND YOGURT! 15 days post surgery. Lost 16 pounds

    Electronic weight loss program recommendations?

Myfitnesspal. I'm old school. It tracks food. Graph shows your progress. Helps meet and see if you hit your calorie and macronutrient goals (protien etc) Tracks your exercise including syncing fitbit, map my run or map my walk...I'm sure their are more, It will graph for the week or month of meeting your calories and macros. You can leave your food log open for others to see, Or keep it private ( I keep mine open.) At the end of the day you submit and it tells you if everyday was like today you would weigh (calculates what you would weigh based on your food and exercise) gives me motivation to stay on track. It also has a forum for many categories bariatrics, vegan, keto, fitness weightlifting etc. you can friend and message.....They are amazing people that are motivated inspiring, and positive.

    Anyone freeze muffins?

It’s Dunkin Hines keto friendly. Made with almond and coconut flour. I don’t have the package for the muffins but I have the brownies here to try. They are two grams of net carbs, 0 added sugars and 3 grams protein. It’s kinda high in fat like most keto at 10 grams but has suggestions for ingredient swaps which would reduce that some (I made it the normal way).

    Intermittent Fasting

Hi all!!! Im due to be sleeved on 8-21-17. Im excited and a lil nervous but am anticipating the out come. I just wanted to jump in on the IF...It was one of the the methods I used along with the Keto lifestyle and it worked very well. But then I developed heel spurs and had to have foot surgery and was in bandages and a cam boot for a while and was knocked out Ketosis. But it really works if your disciplined. I am considering the Ketogenic lifestyle along with IF again after surgery when im fully healed. I think it's great for those who hit a plateau in losing. mybariatricjourney
  22. I spent the entirety of my six month insurance required pre-op diet program following a keto way of eating. I lost 100 pounds during that time, but, more importantly, I redefined my relationship with food which is the only way weight loss will be successful and sustainable long term, surgery or not. I have always been so thankful for spending that time, because post-op, your body is desperately trying to heal. I can't imagine how much harder it would have been to deal with the physical pain and challenges that existed after surgery while having to redefine my relationship with food at the same time. My advice is to try to start at least thinking about eating the way you should eat post-op. You'll thank yourself later.
  23. I am so happy to hear that. I'm on day 7 of the keto preop diet and although it has gotten easier exhaustion-wise and foggy-wise, the headaches are still not gone. I agree about the higher energy levels though and am also so excited for my body to change. Keep up the good work. Happy to be on this journey together!
  24. Is this the Keto Food list you guys are using?? I plan on starting this plan this week. Keto Food List
  25. Keto can be a great balance of meats, fats, non-starchy veg, the occasional berry, and full fat dairy. The unfortunate side effect that I found out is that because of the high percentage of fat (true, real keto represents about 100+g of fat a day), I had terrible stomach issues and dumping syndrome. I think the SCIENCE behind keto speaks for itself, and there IS a LOT of science out there. Tons of research has been done regarding Keto and cancer, diabetes, inflammation etc. I feel unfortunate that it's not an option for me, I have 2 non-WLS friends who have lost 75+ lbs each on it, and they eat a pretty nice balance of foods.
