I was miserable. I'm on day 6 and it's better. Mine is less than 1,000 calories a day and no more than 50 grams carbs, 2 meal replacement shakes. They sent home some recipes and frozen dinner recommendations, too. Day 1 morning I was nauseous to the point I almost went home from work. And bathroom breaks for loose stools were numerous. I felt like I'd done a colonoscopy prep! Day 2 no nausea, still numerous bathroom trips. Day 3, numerous bathroom breaks in the morning, but by afternoon these had stopped. Day 4, a few extra bathroom breaks but none in the afternoon. Day 5 we were going to go on an easy hike but the drive is about 2 hours and, of course, no bathrooms on the trail. So we opted to stay home and I'm glad. A few extra bathroom trips. Today, Day 6, still a couple extra trips, but I'm sure tired of it. For food, leafy green salads with ground turkey; hard boiled eggs; chicken on greens; that type of thing. Green beans, not my favorite but they'll do. You've got this! I read someone say the 1st 3 days are the hardest and I'll agree with that. But it does get easier.

Question about (very) small regain
Arabesque replied to maintenanceman's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
I get it. I too had about a 3lb gain after being stable for a year or so. Yes a small gain but just like you it was concerning to me. My fluctuation had been 48.5-49.5kg but suddenly I was 51kg. I liked being under 50kg & I too worried it was the beginning of the end. I am a believer in your body settling into it’s correct set point & what it needs to function effectively which may be at a higher weight. Building muscle will result in some gain. Becoming more complacent & less vigilant in your choices, making adjustments to your way of eating to better suit your lifestyle, medication changes, or your original way of eating was too limiting all can contribute to weight gain. For me, I discovered a contributing factor was my HRT was no longer working (absorption issue after my gall removal. I also had increased my protein intake due to the same absorption problem. Changed to a patch, made a slight adjustment to the protein sources I’d added (legumes be gone - well reduced) & slowly I lost not all but most of that gain. I now fluctuate between 49.5-49.9kg & have been stable for about 6 months. Funny thing is I do eat more than I did at the lower weight (about 1300 then & about 1500 now) which, according to those BMR calculators, is about right for me. If you want to nip the regain in the bud, maybe start with tracking your food intake for a couple of weeks to see what may be contributing. 100 extra calories can result in a 10lb weight gain over a year. You mentioned you’ve been snacking more & that may be contributing. May be drop one or two of those snacks, reduce your snack portions or look for a lower calorie alternative. But only change those things that are sustainable & don’t affect how you want to enjoy your life. You have to decide if the changes you may need to make to your eating are worth weighing a little less or whether being a couple of pounds heavier is an acceptable increase. And what an acceptable fluctuation may be for you. Unfortunately, I think we will always have to be vigilant. We have too much history with eating & weight gain not to be. All the best. -

Meals yesterday and today- I didn’t end up eating the salmi or half the strawberries, gave them to a kid. Ate one mini eclair and half a bag of queso twists (425 calories!). My favorite was probably the falafel bowl where I made the cottage cheese taste like tzatziki. Also, my chopsticks are in my hand NOT stabbed into the food. -
Returning to work post surgery
Tomo replied to ltdaniel's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was able to do desk work and chores (except the heavy lifting, of course, as per my surgeon) on day 3, but I did feel tired for a couple of weeks possibly due to low calorie intake, borderline dehydration and general recovering from surgery. Some recover fast, some recover slower but whatever your case is, don't rush back to work if you can help it. Relax and heal faster. Good luck and congrats on your upcoming surgery! -
8 months post op Questions
Arabesque replied to Heatherhei's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The reason I answered the way I did was because of the large number of posts from people who are frustrated, disappointed, angry or think they are failing because they compare themselves with others, set unrealistic goals or timelines, think they are losing slowly, don’t reach their goal, etc. I didn’t want you to fall into the comparison trap too. I had a lower starting weight so had less to lose than you do. Am shorter & likely older. I also had a sleeve. I lost my goal of 31kg (68lbs) at 6 months. (Lost another 11odd kilos over the next 11 months bringing my total to a loss of about 92lbs.) At 8 months I’d lost 37kg (81lbs). So comparing my stats with @ms.sss & @summerseeker you can see how different loss can be over the same time period - a range of more than 2 stone which can be two or three dress sizes as an example. I may have lost more by month 8 if I wasn’t consciously increasing my calories to try to stop my loss. I may have lost less if I had more or longer stalls or lost nothing if my body decided that my goal weight was my new set point & best weight. PS: My total loss made me an outlier. The average weight loss is about 65% of the weight you’re to lose to put you in a healthier range for both bypass & sleeve. I lost 135%. I had a couple of very short stalls, less than a week in length, so my rate of loss was fairly steady, gradually slowing, with just little hiccups along the way. -

the Kid went to the Keg for dinner tonight and i went to town with her leftovers. 527 calories for the plate. Ate all the steak and veggies, but passed on the bread and a little less than 1/2 of the baked potato shown, so i figure i'll update MFP to read 242 for what i actually ate. -
I don't have a sweet tooth but it's so hot these days I had the craving for an ice cream sandwich the other day. So I had one of those mini Great value ice cream sandwiches (80 calories) and it was really good. I didn't dump but I never really have. I do have the foamies if I eat too fast or not chew enough. I can eat anything for the most part and not have issues. As everyone said, not many dump and you will pretty much be able to eat most foods unless you had become lactose intolerant... Etc.

I did experience a little dizziness even without the sun. Far lower calories compared to what I used to intake prior to pre-op and slight dehydration. Even on a liquid diet, still try to get in as much water as you can. At least 64 ounces. Many foods, like fruits and vegetables, give us needed hydration but that is not allowed on liquid diets. The sun will just add to your dehydration so keep sipping on liquids. If you experience serious symptoms, don't hesitate to contact your doctor or go to ER.

Long Distance Hiking/vigorous exercise after surgery
loridee11 replied to Colin from California's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi Colin, I don't hike 20 miles per day back to back, but I imagine you will be able to at some point. For the first year or so I'm not sure I was eating/absorbing enough calories to sustain that type of heavy exercise. However, once I was able to eat a little more I never had issues doing whatever exercise I wanted. Of course, as with everything talk to your doctor For me, I started training for Kili about a year after my surgery, with hikes 5-8 miles just on weekends. At the 2 year mark I was hiking 3-4 times per week, up to about 12 miles. And Kili was about 2 1/2 years after surgery and I had no issues at all. I was not active or fit pre-surgery, so my baseline was very low. ~Lori -
I have the lighter kind of ice cream occasionally. On holiday I had a scoop of the full fat / full sugar variety and it was ok, I did not dump or get the foamies. Life without the occasional treat would be only half a life. I keep my calories under 1300 and make my protein and liquid goals so C'est la vie

Don’t be down on yourself! Millions of people eat loaded mashed potatoes without becoming obese. Hell, if we all stuck to just 4 tablespoons of “bad” food we would all be fine. There are many approaches to weight loss post wls. Some have a long list of nevers that cause anxiety and steal joy. I would never have done the surgery if I thought that I couldn’t have 3 tablespoons of our families traditional potato gratin ever again. In the past it would have piled high on my enormous plate and I would have eaten it over and over that way until it was all gone. Every Christmas I did this! There’s a big difference! I knew that I would fail if I went into this surgery thinking that I would never get to enjoy food again. I have this tool and education to keep me healthy. I can’t eat a ton even if I want to. That’s a win. I will only enjoy after protein goals are met. Won’t be much room for that indulgence but I will have it here and there. I will no longer stress eat boxes of little Debbie’s in my car, I will now enjoy every small 3 to 4 bites of my children’s birthday cakes on their special days. I was already enjoying the 1200 calorie diet I was on preop minus the hunger, as I focused 95 percent on healthy proteins, beautiful vegetables, gourmet cheeses and nuts in super small portions, the deliciousness of a tart apple., all of the right foods while spending maybe 5 percent having a bite of the cupcake my daughter baked, etc. I myself will have long lasting success focusing on good quality real food with the help of a restriction to remind me when I am overindulging in even the right foods with occasional treats of very small proportions. I wouldn’t have done this any other way.

I Am Not Really Seeing The Weight Loss I Was Expecting
Hey Man replied to Hey Man's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was eating 5000 or 6000 calories a day. So even without the surgery, I would have lost the same amount of weight now if at the last minute after doing Optifast - I decided to cancel the surgery was my point. I have already learned how to eat better and detoxed from bad foods. I am not going to back to how I used to be. I don't regret the surgery at all, but it does give a perspective that I probably could have achieved the same result if I maintained the same discipline that I had to get the surgery. That is where I failed with past diets. When you are "forced" to drink shakes for 4 weeks that is different than just trying to diet for 4 weeks. -
I Am Not Really Seeing The Weight Loss I Was Expecting
ms.sss replied to Hey Man's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Fun fact: the most weight i ever lost in one month AFTER wls was the first post op month with 21 lbs lost (and i was about 225 at the beginning of said month). the most weight i ever lost in one month BEFORE surgery was 25 lbs (and i started off that month at 180-ish). so weight loss roughly the same-ish. and i was eating roughly the same-ish (i.e., basically nothing lol). i didn't expect to lose "faster" because it still boils down to calories in-calories out. maybe if i ate less in that POST-op month than i did that PRE-op month, sure. but i can't eat less than "basically nothing"! thats just math. and science. surgery doesn't make me burn more calories. its all restriction-based (though rNy does have a malabsorption aspect to it...but i digress). now the main difference is this: i re-gained those lost 25 PRE-op lbs plus packed on another 55 for good measure over the following 4 years. VS...keeping those 21 POST-op lbs off PLUS losing an additional 99 lbs on top of that over the following 7 months. im 4.5+ years out now and have continued to (more or less) keep all 120 lbs off for over 4 years (FOUR YEARS! that still blows my mind...i have never lost weight before and even come close to keeping it ALL off for even 4 MONTHS). yes, you will lose at the same rate doing diet and exercise as you would with surgery and it's associated physical restriction, IF (and that's a BiG IF) u continue with the diet and exercise. which leads us to the age-old question: so why didn't u? food for thought. ❤️ -
March 23 buddies yet?
SemperVeritas replied to ceri84's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the bypass done on March 7th. I'm 5'4 and starting weight was 233, 221.4 on day of surgery. Today I weighed in at 184.6, so about 48 lbs lost in total. Really excited to hit 50 lost, and then I'll only have about 5 lbs to get to my previous low I had reached on my own about 5 years ago. I'm averaging about 1100 calories a day, and I track with LoseIt because I could see myself snacking around my restriction. I do "formal" exercise about 3x week, and I'm generally pretty busy around the house or going for walks. Energy level is pretty low though, I definitely don't feel like I'm bouncing around lol. Hope everyone else is well and healthy! -

aww so sweet. my Kid brought me home a green smoothie ❤️ 290 calories for the cup. im currently still drinking it, but i figure i'll stop drinking at about 1/4 cuz i looked up the nutritional values on the company's website (see below) and its got waaay too much sugar for me to drink more than that in one sitting. Just goes to show ya, just because its green doesn't mean it's not a catalyst for dumping. From the company's website: lotsa sugar and so little protein. oopsies. -
Hey! Thanks for the reply. No way I’ll be able to eat 400 calories or less lol. I’ve just been sooooo sick like I just can only explain it by feeling extremely weak and fatigued. The anxiety as well. Wow. I haven’t had this bad of anxiety for a long time! I’m not sure if I got to my body’s happy place. I didn’t wanna still be 190lbs. My goal was 180 and I just couldn’t get there. Well today I weighed 176. 7lbs in 6 days. Not good. I should be happy but I’m like oh ****. This is bad. I’m going to go get an IV today to help with the fatigue I’m hoping. I just wanna feel like myself again.

High protein meal/snack ideas, Hair loss, overeating
LindsayT replied to Erin18's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Pinterest is a great place for recipes as well. When eating tuna/chicken/or egg salad, I don't normally eat it with anything. I want to keep the room in my stomach for the protein. To get fiber (and a little extra protein) with it, I like to add thawed frozen peas to my chicken or tuna salad. Maybe talk with your family about keeping snacks and other foods more hidden so they're not so tempting to get into. Another option is to make up your own snack boxes, so you can just pull them out. Maybe some reduced fat cheese and veggies, hummus and veggies, or whatever else you like. Meal planning (even out to eat planning) is so important for us. I have noticed that foods are way more unhealthy than we think. For example, our regular brand of pasta sauce has 16g of added sugar per serving (not to mention the added surger in a lot of food in the US), a small burger patty from a fast food place (no bun or condiments) is 280 calories, and carbs and salt are lerking everywhere in prepackaged and restaurant foods. For example, I got a cup of soup at Penara the other day and just looked at the calories when I ordered, once I tracked it in my app, it had over 2,000mg of sodium. Yikes! (Remember, track first) And I'm not scared of carbs, they just need to be the right carbs; however, they all add up. I try and stay under 60 carbs per day. So, I've learned to track before I put anything in my mouth, unless I know it meets the criteria that my dietitian has put me on. Sometimes, life happens and it's not always possible and none of us are perfect; it's really the effort we put in. Gosh, it's hard though. None of this is easy, I totally get that. And whoever said this was easy....well, I have a few words for them. I look at the surgery as a tool to help us fight back to get healthy and get our lives back, but it's still up to us to use it properly. (Not saying your not, it's more of a reminder for all of us). Again, I wish you all the best. -
The surgery is a tool, not a cure all. You have to work on your mind, too. Just because you CAN eat something, doesn't mean you should. Yes, you can only have way smaller portions now. But if you aren't watching your calorie, carb, and fat intake, the tool won't mean anything.

High protein meal/snack ideas, Hair loss, overeating
Erin18 replied to Erin18's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I see my dietician in August along with my surgeon and I also will be getting bloodwork done. Thank you for the tips/suggestions. The 1200 calories was a day that I had. The example wasn't the 1200 calorie day. I'm gonna take out bread or if I want bread/bread type products, just have half. I don't eat bread related foods every day. I try to stay away from junkfood. Alot of the times it's always in my face and I live with family, I've mentioned before to put it in a place where it's not in my face. It's always usually on the counter. Right now, yogurt is still turning my stomach just of the thought about it, but hopefully I can add it back in my diet. I love cheesesticks, protein drinks with 20g of protein, jello I need to make some, been loving cherries lately and apples. Have to pick up some strawberries. Does anyone eat and then at the 15 minute mark they get sick of what they're eating? So you stop? I have some recipes for bariatric meals, I need to whip that back out and make a grocery list. Plus I also follow a lot of people on tik tok and youtube. I also need to get back to eating egg, tuna or chicken salad again. What do you eat it with? Vegetables?
