    Sick from protein powders

What stage are you on? Liquids still? Puree? As someone said above, bone broth, Oikos Triple Zero Yogurt has like 15 grams of protein. A few of them a day may help and should work for you in liquid and puree stage (if you're still in one or the other). Same with cottage cheese. Just have to know what you're allowed and try and aim to get your protein from foods as much as possible since you're not liking the protein drinks/powders. Again, I don't know what stage you're in but I stopped with all protein drinks just about a month out and instead concentrated on getting it from other sources food-wise.

WHERE ARE MY AUGUST 2021 PEEPS?

Day 3 I could eat creamed soups,sf pudding, yogurt. Day 15 I started soft/purée foods. Eggs, tuna, avocado, mashed veggies and purée meats. I don’t get any more solid foods til the 5th week. As for the gas walk walk walk the more I walked the better I felt. I also used gas x

What are your favorite food go-to's ?

Regular Food Stage: I've pretty much continued eating like I did several months BEFORE surgery (low carb/no sugar) only less. Breakfast: scrambled egg & 1 turkey sausage patty OR a one egg omelet w/cheese and/or veggies OR a turkey sausage, egg and cheese on a whole wheat Thomas' English Muffin (can only eat like half to 3 quarters of it) Lunch: tuna (with just light mayo, salt and pepper) along with 6 whole wheat crackers and a few cubes of cheese OR a few pieces of lunchmeat and cheese OR left over protein from the night before OR natural PB with some sugar free jelly on whole wheat bread. Dinner: When it comes to meat/protein it's almost always chicken (baked/cooked various ways)/shrimp/salmon/fish, etc. I TRY to also get in veggies but am usually barely able to fit them in once I eat my protein but veggies will be anything from broccoli, green beans & mushrooms, spinach, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, etc. Snacks: I don't usually snack at all during day. But if I still feel hungry after my meals I will take that opportunity to eat some sort of fruit or yogurt or cottage cheese. I usually make it a point of getting in at least two servings of fruit a day anyway. My meals don't typically include starches (hell, if I barely have room for veggies then I almost never have room for a starch) but once in a while they do and it will be something like brown rice, protein pasta, veggie pasta, potatoes, or the whole wheat/grain bread, whole wheat/grain English muffins, whole wheat/grain crackers. Stuff along those lines.

    Daily Calories

That seems low to me! I wasn’t given an exact calorie goal either, but a goal to get in 70-80gms of protein per day. My protein shake is 30 grams protein, 160 calories. Chicken breast for 3 ounces is about 165 cals, 30 grams protein. An Ooikos triple zero yogurt is 100 cals, 15 grams protein. So that gets you at 75 grams protein and 425 calories. Not sure how I could have possible met my protein goal for only 300 calories.
  6. For me, a food scale is very important. I weight everything I eat, not for monitoring purposes, but to be sure I don't eat too much. At about 10 weeks from surgery, I can now eat about 8 ounces at a sitting. I would caution you not to buy too much food before your surgery date. My tastes changed quite a bit after the surgery, and I still have 60 cartons of Carbmaster yogurt and 40 boxes of Wonderslim shakes that don't appeal to me at all. During the puree phase, as Candace said, you'll want something to grind your food up. I found the my bullet blender worked well.

WHERE ARE MY AUGUST 2021 PEEPS?

Don’t worry! I had the same Problem…what I did that helped was drink my 3 shakes and then I ate a small salad once a day or sometimes I split that salad in half for lunch and rest at dinner. It was just lettuce, chicken and some seasoning (I did add a very little honey mustard as well). It was a little different than what I was supposed to eat( supposed to be 1/2 cup vegetables or a non fat Greek yogurt which I did eat in between here and there)..but seeing chicken is a protein, it was ok and that worked so good for me. I ended up losing 14 pounds before surgery from that 2 weeks. Try to find something that’s healthy that you enjoy eating (like a good salad or something…just stay away from the dressings or croutons). GOOD LUCK YOU CAN DO IT
  8. That makes me feel better. I don't mind giving up my carbonated water and not drinking at meals , but I've always been a huge veggie lover . And even if I never could eat many again it's still all worth it , but I want to be able to eat a mostly normal about of them . I tried to eat a healthy variety of foods before even though it was obviously too much , so that is important to me. I eat yogurt every day too. I have it for lunch , and usually again later as an evening snack . I have been able to put a few blueberries or raspberries in it and still finish it so that's good. At a year out I am able to eat more , which is scary and good at the same time ha ha ! Sent from my Nokia 7.2 using BariatricPal mobile app
  9. Don’t worry @STLoser, @shoppgirl & @SummerTimeGirl, you will eventually be able to eat more fruit & vegetables. Just slowly incorporate more. At the beginning I could only eat 2 or 3 green beans or a small floret of cauliflower. I started adding heaps of vegetables to soups, omelettes, bolognaise, etc. as well. Now I easily eat a good cup of mixed vegetables like green beans, asparagus, broccolini, sugar snap peas, etc. every night. I also eat lots of lettuce (it’s a slider for me). I have blueberries with my rolled oats every morning & another serve of fruit most nights. (Fruit is a good snack, a natural sweet substitute. Plus high water content & fibre.) I get 4-5 serves of fruit & vegetables in every day. Yogurt is high in protein & was a handy & easy source for me (mine gives me 15g yoghurt tub or 22g yoghurt drink). I still eat it as an afternoon snack almost every day or sometimes I dice up fruit to add to the yoghurt & eat it as dessert. Every little bit counts.

    Going back on Liquids

I’m almost 4 yrs out and instead of going back to shakes I add protein powder to foods to boost the protein amount. If I bake a cake etc I always add protein powder to it. If I don’t want to cook l will eat a Greek yogurt. So this far out all of my protein can come from food.

    What is your biggest obstacle

My biggest struggle, I guess, would be my inability to get in a wide variety of foods. I feel like I just eat protein, i.e. meat or eggs, and then have no room for anything else like vegetables, dairy, healthy fats or even starch or fruits. I have spoken to my nutritionist before about this and she says that it will change over time and to just concentrate on getting in enough protein for now. That I'm still early in the game. I try but most days I'm lucky if, in addition to the meat (protein source), I get in 4 bites of veggies total for the day. Almost never get dairy unless it's a slice or two of cheese or yogurt or cottage cheese, and rarely get in starch even though that too is suggest for my diet. Fruit I have been really trying hard to get that in at least. I'm sure eventually it will even itself out. I also am finding it hard for exercise. This Summer has been a doozy when it comes to the health of my family. My son had a procedure, then me and my surgery and now my husband had surgery last week (had a defibrillator placed), plus I take care of my 3 grandkids from about 8am until 6pm or later sometimes. Anyway, I'm finding it hard to get time in for me or even a dang walk without anyone needing me or wanting to tag along to slow me down. I wanted to get back to the gym but it's just not possible at this time. I do have an exercise bike and various sizes or bands and free weights but, I'm just no good with coming up with a plan on what I need or should be doing. Can't even seem to find time to do those either. Thankfully I am still losing weight but I'd most definitely like to be toning sh*t up too at the same time. LOL
  12. my stomach sounds like an airport sometimes i swear - it does get a little less noisy the further away from surgery. i ate two weeks full liquids- no real food until week 4 - eggs made me puke and hurt even. stay with mashed potatoes, yogurt those items for a bit and yes you feel full after a bite or two - or at least i did . wait a good 30 minutes to drink before a meal and after wait 30 minutes before you drink.... that pocket is tiny

What are your go to meals?

I'll be 3 months out on the 19th of this month. For Breakfast: I usually eat ONE egg sometimes with or without 1 piece of turkey sausage. Sometimes scrambled with some sort of cheese, or diced ham, or veggies. And sometimes I'll just do a sausage, egg and cheese on a whole wheat English Muffin but can never finish the entire thing (usually have at least 1/4 left). For Lunch: 1/4 cup of Tuna (just tuna, light mayo, salt and pepper) with 6 whole grain saltines and 6 mini cubes of cheese. Most times I cannot finish all of this either. Sometimes I'll just do a few slice of lunchmeat (98% fat free) and a few slices of cheese. Sometimes a yogurt or cottage cheese. Just depends. For Dinner: Almost always either chicken, shrimp, some sort of fish (all cooked various ways but fried) and veggies (spinach, green beans, mushrooms, cauliflower, etc). Which, by the time I get down my meat serving, I rarely have room for veggies but I always add them to my plate and TRY to get some in. Just recently I made up some taco meat (with ground turkey) and we made mini tacos with those 1 carb tortillas (15 calories) from Mr. Tortilla. They were awesome!!! We added a spoonful of meat, diced tomatoes, sour cream, shredded lettuce, taco sauce and taco cheese. Just a pinch of each item on each taco. I could eat two. And I was pushing it by the end of the second one. The tortillas are like 3 or 4 inches wide but so dang good! I HIGHLY recommend them! We tried their Spicy Prototype for now but also have the Multigrain and the Pico de Gallo. Can't wait to try them! Tons of things you can use them for. I usually do not snack during the day at all. Just don't feel the need to. But after dinner I do try and get in at least two servings of a fruit (before bed) as per my dietician. So, I'll usually do an apple and a small Halo (not at the same time) or cottage cheese with a few pieces of cantaloupe tossed in, or few pieces of watermelon, cherries, etc. So far that has been the norm and usual for me. Now I have eaten things like a slice of pizza once or twice or a few bites of a cheesesteak and a few bites of an Italian Hoagie (all were during a long weekend vacation/trip), a few fries, but that does not happen often. It is NOT typical behavior.

    Fish for pureed/mushy stages?

I don't like mayo, but I do like miracle whip, so you could try that. I make a sauce of mayo mixed with mustard and curry powder (it doesn't taste like mayo AT ALL). You could try bolthouse yogurt ranch (or any other bolthouse flavor - they are about 45 calories for 2 tablespoons). They are in the produce section refrigerators. You could try a bottled curry or tikka masala sauce or Asian marinade (I haven't had surgery yet, but I'm thinking I'll be too tired after surgery to cook much so I'm thinking of easy things). Also, broth might be good.

    Fish for pureed/mushy stages?

You can use plain greek yogurt instead of mayo. I also hate mayo.
  16. https://bariatricbits.com/recipes/ Here is a website that has some recipes. I think I saw another one that had some interesting looking recipes, and I will post it if I find it. I start soft foods on Wednesday (cannot wait!). I bought canned tuna, canned chicken breast, chicken thighs, white fish, turkey chili, soups with meat & vegetables. I also picked up low fat mayo, hummus & guacamole (pre made snack size tubs) to mix with chicken & tuna. Some other things I purchased to prepare are sugar free bbq sauce, sugar free ketchup, s.f. canned fruit, beans, ground turkey. I plan on continuing to eat Oikos Triple Zero Yogurt & farina for breakfast. Good luck & tell us if you find recipes or foods that you like!
  17. My surgery was in 2017. I have settled into a few core go-to nutritional solutions. I always have Premier Protein shakes on hand in chocolate (30g Protein, 1g sugar) or Apple + Oat (20g Protein, 1g sugar). Reasonable pricing by the case at Costco. Having a dependable, easy to count and carry protein source allows me to relax on what else I'm eating during the day. You're not back to veg and fruit yet (especially salads!), but that'll come. In the soft food category, two favorites for me are Siggi's yogurt (12g Protein, 5g sugar), or cottage cheese with (home made) no-sugar applesauce or (home made) low-sugar jam. I've moved away from the yogurt and more toward the cottage cheese, since I can take more control of the flavorings and because cottage cheese is more protein-dense than yogurt. The biggest challenge for me in the liquid and soft food stages was getting something savory into the mix. Bone broth and organic chicken stock worked well for me, sometimes with an egg mixed in. Other soft foods I rotate are egg salad and a mix of tuna and chicken. I use two cans of tuna with one can of chicken (both packed in water, both purchased at a reasonable price at Costco). I add a bunch of horseradish mustard and some mayo. You can reduce the amount of mayo by adding back some of the water that the cans are packed with. Also, an immersion blender makes the tuna/chicken salad more like a restaurant and less like a parent with a fork. Good luck on the path, MGigi and everyone else!
  18. I remember things like eating tuna, egg salad (although warning - a lot of people can't tolerate eggs early out) - can't remember what else, but I also continued to eat some of stuff I ate during pureed stage, iike hummus, refried beans, and Greek yogurt. Ricotta bake is good, too - there should be a lot of recipes out there for it. check out the blog "World According to Eggface". She has recipes on there for all the stages

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

Hey @Flounder. Sometimes it really can be rough to get the protein we need in. But to meet my goals I do food prep just like @Blueslily stated. It really helps when are working. In the mornings before i start work. I always just drink a protein drink unless im able to make me an omelet w/ spinach and crab meat. For snacks while at work I get things like almonds, onikes greek yogurt, tuna salad w/ 2 broil eggs, egg salad, grill shrimp salad, chicken salad, quest protein bar, canteloup, spinach, white and yellow cheese sticks. These are just somethings i get my protein in with while i work. So i hope it helps. But keep pushing and you are doing good💪.

    Liquid diet

The closest to chewing on the full liquid diet are probably the sugar-free ice pops, jello & pudding. I am also allowed farina that is thinned out with milk and sugar-free yogurt. Have those foods helped at all, if you are allowed them? The chewy calcium citrate supplements might give you enough of the sensation to help. I know, I totally understand and just counting down the days until I can move to the soft food stage!

    July 2021 Surgery People!

I had my surgery a few days before you (currently on full liquid phase), and I agree it is hard to get them both in, especially that first week. I have been getting better at getting them in this second week, so it gets easier (at least until we have to start spacing out the water before and after meals). I try to drink my protein shakes between meals. So the first around 10 am and the second around 3pm or 8 pm. There were a few days were I couldn't stomach them, so on those days when that happened, I used Genepro and added 1/2 a serving to my soups or crystal light. Also sometimes th chocolate shakes can be overwhelming, so I mix 1/2 vanilla & 1/2 chocolate. If I get 2 shakes or 2 servings of Genepro in that is 60 g of protein. I have been also eating Oikos Triple Zero Yogurt (1/2 container w/ 7 g of protein). For me, water has been the bigger challenge every day. Like you said, there aren't enough hours in the day to get it all in! Drinking Crystal Light or other sugar free drinks instead of water for a drink or two a day also helps me. I have a time marked motivation cup filled with water and need to have it near me at all times. I am always behind on where I should be each hour. 🤦‍♀️Luckily, the 2 shakes take care of 16 oz of water, otherwise I wouldn't have made the 64 oz goal yet. I did set a timer on my phone through baritastic, but it doesn't seem to work on my phone. I think there are water drinking reminder apps, so I will need to try that next week when I start soft foods. I'm sorry you are getting cramping, when I drink too quickly, I feel it sometimes, too, but it has gotten better. Wishing you luck, and looking forward to seeing other tips for the water, too! Keep us posted if you find tips that work for you!😊

WHERE ARE MY AUGUST 2021 PEEPS?

Hi! I had my surgery late July (27th) so I'm 10 days post op. This is how things went for me: Day of surgery The surgery took 1.5 hours, and I spent an additional 1 hour in the recovery room. I was only nauseous immediately after waking up but it went away quickly. When I got back to my room, I slept for a while. After about an hour I was able to get up and walk around, use the bathroom, and drink water. This made me a bit dizzy and nauseous and I felt weak. I tried to walk around every hour or so but all I really wanted to do was sleep. Most of the pain was in my back and chest. Pain level was 7/10 so they gave me more painkillers for the night. I slept on and off throughout the night, waking several times to use the bathroom, have a walk around my room and a few sips of water. These were definitely the hardest hours of the entire recovery. It took quite a bit of concentration and strength to get myself out of bed each time. I never experienced any nausea or vomiting, just some dizziness when walking or standing up for more than 5 minutes. 1 day post op The next morning I felt much better, pain level 5/10. Was able to drink a lot more, walk around the entire ward, have a shower and take 2 pills orally (1 for stomach, 1 for pain). Most of the pain was more of an aching in my back and upper chest, and an extremely sore abdomen. My husband said the color in my skin was back to normal and I was generally in good spirits. I was discharged at 11am and when we got home (to our hotel) is when the shoulder pain and gas pain started to kick in. I noticed that it helped a lot to drink hot peppermint tea and broth, as well as to lie down flat on the bed. Once I would get up and walk around some more, though, the shoulder pain would come back. I walked around as much as I could because I had read that, although painful, it's the quickest way to get the gasses out and recover. That afternoon I also had my first meal: about 2 tbsp of babyfood puree. Went down fine. It was also the first time that evening that I noticed my belly rumbling a lot and making noise. Slept through the night without waking up just fine. 2 days post op Pain level was just a 2 or 3 this morning with some gas and shoulder aching. I spent the day taking small walks, napping and alternating ice water with hot broth and tea, and had about 100g of babyfood puree throughout the day. 3 days post op No real pain on this day, just soreness in the abdomen and some dull ache in the shoulder every once in a while. I had some Greek Yoghurt in addition to the babyfood and that went down well. Could feel a lot of rumbling happening in my belly. Also had my first BM! 4-5 days post op This is when I finally started to feel some hunger. But after having just 2 or 3 teaspoons of yogurt or puree, my stomach felt very full and this would last for 3-4 hours during which I could focus on getting my water in. I comfortably traveled home (1.5 hr flight + 1 hr train) on day 5. Present (10 days post op) No pain or discomfort, just some soreness around my incisions that I notice a few times a day. Energy levels are fine unless I try to do something physically demanding - then I get wiped out very quickly and need a nap or a rest. I am continuing to take omeprazole every morning and have 1 more day of blood thinner injections left. Eating around 50g of puree food, 5-6x a day. Highest weight: 241 lbs Surgery date weight: 228 lbs Today's weight: 216 lbs

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

Hello everyone! My surgery date was April 27, I am down 70lbs from my liquid diet and 60 from the day I went into surgery. Size 20-size 14(I would be a size 12 but I have big hips and a big bottom still) for workouts I’m hiking, walking, starting to run, swimming, yoga(hot yoga is my favorite) and HIIT. In the mornings I eat my protein yogurt then I’ll snack around 11, then I’ll eat my lunch which is a piece of cheese and feta and olive salad, then I do a protein shake for dinner I do chicken or salmon. I can’t do beef and I’m real careful about pork. I’m drinking tons of water! I’m so happy I can have salads and fruits now. Hope everyone is doing well.

    15 months post sleeve

I’m freaking out a little. Over a year post sleeve and For breakfast I eat 150g quark (low fat Greek yogurt kind of) with 70g strawberries and 30g protein granola. I’ve watched way too many videos on YouTube that state after one year your plate should only be a total of 170grams. It’s a full children’s bowl. Is that normal? 😞 dinner I eat really healthy but it weight up to 250-300grams total of protein and veggies. I have not gained any weight but it’s scary to see that I’m able to eat almost a full small plate of food
  25. I have been using Vital Proteins brand unflavored powders. I have been primarily using their Collagen complex powder, but coworkers use their protein powder and love it too. Their unflavored stuff really is unflavored. I usually put it in a hot drink, or yogurt, because that's how I start my day.
