  1. I have been lurking for a while and using everyone's experience on this forum to build up the courage to do the surgery. I am nearly done with the pre-op appointments, and then I'm having a duodenal switch (the newer single kind). I quickly ran into a big snag when I saw the pulmonologist to be cleared for surgery. He insisted that I stop my endometriosis medication (progesterone only) for 3 weeks before and a month afterwards. I have stage iv endometriosis and am disabled without the medication, can barely walk due to pain and usually end up in the ER every month. He just absolutely refused to engage with my questions about how to be smart about blood clots, and also not undo years of work to get to a level of "able to live with endo". I understand the risks of blood clots but he just wouldn't even listen to the risks if I stop either. I spoke with my gynecologist and she thought that it was fine to be on it. She really blew me away with her support, she called that pulmonologist and got him to agree that the risks of me being off meds outweighed the blood clot risk. I nearly cried to have doctor advocate for me, especially to another doctor on my behalf. So now I can look forward to the surgery! I am dreaming of doing it before the end of the year (since I've already hit my deductible and out of pocket max) but it's beyond a long shot probably. Thanks everyone for sharing here on the forum, it's been a great help.

    Onederland!

Best way to break a stall is time… haha I wish I had a better answer but there it is. I’m now down to 172 and I’m slowing down so much but still slowly making my way to goal. Still feel proud every day to have a weight that starts with a “1” instead of a “3”.
  3. Hey hello! I’m wanting to find others who have gone through St Vincent for their surgery and just want to share experiences. I’ve had an awful time with St Vincent. Started September 2020 and still haven’t had my surgery. I’ve finally written to their management about my experience and hope to hear back soon but I’m afraid I’m going to have to start all over soon and it isn’t my fault. A little about my situation. I have Healthy Indiana Plan, the surgeon they picked out for me is Dr. Inman, started the 6 month monitored diet/classes September 1 2020, completed and they gave me a list of things to complete before sending my stuff off to insurance which followed: -Psychological evaluation (completely understandable but I will circle back to this later) -TSH blood test/ H. Pylori/ Lipid Panel/Hemoglobin A1c Blood test -Pulmonary clearance from a pulmonologist -Cardiac clearance from cardilogist, EKG too -Chest Xray -and the 3 year weightloss history, statement from primary care giver (all of this makes perfect sense) my primary care doctor is in South Bend since I moved from there to Indy. I contacted someone named Renita who works with all the patients getting their things ready for insurance. I asked if she had any recommendations on where I could complete all of these things and if I could do it at St Vincent. She said no and that I would have to go through my doctor. Ended up scheduling my pulmonologist and cardiologist appointment in south bend. Took off of work, got a hotel twice in one week since they couldn’t see me on the same day, went to a lab in Indianapolis to get my blood work done, my h pylori, my drug test, etc sent all my stuff in. Insurance approved (they declined the first time around but after their one on one with my surgeon they finally approved). I then found out I could have knocked off months because they did all those tests at St Vincent and I have no idea why Renita didn’t inform me this and that I wasted time and money driving to south bend. I went and got my pre-op done this Tuesday and all I had to do was blood work again and an X-ray. All the nurses seemed to be surprised that I had everything done already. They’re still saying I need to wait 3-4 weeks before I even get my surgery date. They’ve had all my results and testing since June (besides the blood work and X-ray I did on Tuesday) — I’ve had a horrible experience with this center. I’m just wondering how everyone else’s experience has been?

On my 2 week pre op liquid diet

Hello Lady Godiva, To try and answer your question, I believe blood tests will tell if your liver is small and non fatty. I think this is what they are after. So leaving off fatty carbs and sugar should get you there If my surgery date doesn't move back again, early next month, I will begin 3 weeks of skim Milk, non carby vegetables, 1 yogurt and two pieces of fruit a day[ any fruit] . Thankfully I can have coffee with caffeine too. I am worried about the length of time that I need do this but I want this surgery over and done with so badly I would probably do longer
  5. First, as you are only 6 weeks post-op, really, if you can, try to just hold off and knuckle through it. The longer you stay away, the less frequent (and nagging) they become.. If you continually satisfy them, they will likely continue to torment you. Try distraction (go for a walk, run some errands, read a book, do some chores, take a shower, paint ur nails…), or drink some water instead. Even just 30 mins of abstaining may make the craving go away. Second, for ME (ymmv), it helped to think about it as “not now, but maybe later”. Never is a strong word, and knowing that some day or time in the future I would be able to do/have something i want eases the mind. And its funny because later down the road, I realized i didn’t even miss is it (i’m looking as you rice and pasta and bread). Third, to answer ur question, i had fried food about 3-4 months post op, albeit it was only like 1 ring of lightly breaded calamari…and i was all, meh. I had bread and pasta for the first time at around 2 years post op (and only because Mr. makes a mean milk bread and ridiculously tender pasta). I have it very rarely though, and in relatively very small amounts (its very filling for me). Rice, to this day i have not had, except for maybe a total of 3 maki roll pieces in the past 3 years. And this is saying something, as i am Asian, and pre-op, and I had rice practically every day, often multiple times a day. And now, honestly, I could do without. I am perfectly happy with what i can and do eat these days (but i admit my diet is not the “healthiest”, and would probably make some folks clutch their pearls, lol) Soooo…this is my long-winded response to say: its’s early. Yes, it may be challenging. Stick to the plan as long as you can and you will thank yourself. This period is only temporary. Good Luck! ❤️

    7 days post gastric sleeve

All completely normal, and it does get better with time. Immediately post-op every wallow hurt and I could barely get a few ounces of liquid in per hour. I'm 3.5 weeks out now, and am able to get all of my fluids in, no pain swallowing, and tolerating purees/soft foods well. I will say, I still feel "bubbly" when I eat, but I have found that if I eat really slow, the gurgling is a good full indicator for me. When it becomes somewhat uncomfortable, I immediately stop eating and that seems to be working. Just give yourself lots of time to get used to your new body and be gentle with yourself while you're healing.
  7. So, at a month out the only thing I put on an actual plate is when I make eggs sometimes. I use a small (by USA standards) plate and use 1-2 eggs worth of egg product which has more protein than whole eggs and less fat. It doesn't look like a full plate, but it isn't too sad. Only, I can't usually finish it if I make two eggs worth (90g). Most of the time, when I make a meal (I use about 400-500g of ground chicken or turkey and maybe a little onion or mushrooms and of course spices) I immediately portion it into small plastic containers that hold about 1 cup (but I only fill about 1/3-1/2 cup) and eat out of those. It's a little sad, but I haven't gotten much joy out of food, to be honest. Sometimes I'll put the food in a bowl... it's fancier that way LOL! I haven't had any ready meals yet, but I will be traveling this week at eating at restaurants by necessity. I plan to just order fish (lots of Asian food in Los Angeles) and eat only what I need and just leave on my plate what I can't eat. I know it's wasteful, but I can't really take leftovers to my hotel. Work is paying anyway! One thing about the ready meals in the USA at least is that they often have a lot of rice or other carb on the side, so you can just not eat that part.

On my 2 week pre op liquid diet

I am still in the "jumping hurdles" phase in an effort to get cleared for RNY. But I admit that I am TERRIFIED of the pre-op two week liquid diet. Since some programs require it and some don't, it honestly feels like a form of hazing to me. Like, I must "prove" that I am worthy of this surgery by torturing myself for two weeks. Moreover, the psychologist in my program told me flat out that my surgeon would not know if I get desperate and eat something small, like an apple, during my pre op diet. ?? How can surgeons know if your liver shrank during this phase if they have never seen it before the surgery? Doesn't make sense to me. Advice appreciated; thank you.

    No weight loss

I'm on Week 3 post-op. I lost 9 kg the first two weeks, then gained about 2 kg this week. I was feeling frustrated but the comments here were really helpful. Let's hang in there and wait it out...
  10. Hi, I just experienced something very similar last week after eating a fatty meat (Brisket). Pretty much immediately after eating, I had stomach cramps and an immediate urge to go to the restroom. That went on for two days at which point I KNEW it wasn't dumping. Pain was pretty knarly and I ended up in the ER when my docs office didn't have an appointment. One CT later and I was diagnosed with colitis. UGH - 8 days of bathrooms and antibiotics, I'm MUCH better. I was able to get some additional bloodwork done and see my surgeon's PA - She said while it wasn't "normal" to have an episode of colitis, the fatty food may have well set it off and that I shouldn't be overly concerned at this point as long as the pain was gone now, I don't have any addtional espisodes, and to expect my digestive system to get back to normal over the next week or so. If you aren't feeling better soon, definitely do what you need to do to have additional testing done.
  11. my dietitian thinks I should be losing about 4 lbs a week… your dietitian is probably thinking that if you’re walking 10km a day they would be losing 4lb a week…. You are doing great! You’re probably converting fat to muscle as well, which is heavier. You don’t want to lose as much as 4lb a week, you want your weightloss to be steady and healthy. You’re going great. You’re in this for the long term - it’s not a competition. Xx
  12. Ahh the battle of defeating or at the very least reducing the power of your cravings. Not easy at all. I had some oven fry fish at around 5 or 6 months - I ate the fish & left the crumb coating. I did buy an air fryer a good year ago for when I want that crisp finish. But I really haven’t had traditionally deep fried food since before surgery. The exception has been calamari a few times. I haven’t had pasta or rice for that long either except for test bites in the first year of maintenance that proved very quickly they weren’t for me (too heavy & too filling). When I want pasta I eat zucchini noodles - you can eat them from the soft food stage on. Same with cauliflower rice. I tried some high protein vegetable pasta but while yummy (much improved from the mushy, starchy stuff of 20yrs ago) it was heavy in my tummy for some reason. I’ll give it a go again in the future. I agree with @TheGreaterFool, your surgeon isn’t telling you when to eat these foods because they don’t want you to. One: probably to try to break your craving. Two: they’re too high in empty calories (little or no nutritional benefit). Three: because if you can only eat say 1/2 cup of food it should be nutritional dense & high in protein. And finally pasta & rice is too filling & can swell in your tummy meaning you can’t eat much of the nutritionally rich food you need to be eating. Some quite happily eat traditional pasta, rice & deep fried foods at times in maintenance. But it really is your call.

Online "support group" not very supportive

@Arabesque I have the same question about why am I still on pureeds! I am STARVING all the time! Even my surgeon's diet guide says soft foods start approximately 5 weeks after surgery. The surgeon scolded me on Facebook and said at 7 weeks out I should only be eating 3 tbsps of pureed food. I think the plan has changed or something happened to make the surgeon change the method, but the diet guide was never updated. It could be so that people lose more weight more quickly. I ditched the support group, it's not a requirement. I have started testing the water with soft foods. I've been doing some tough workouts in the mornings, and I feel like I need an egg every now and then, lol (soft boiled or poached of course!). Thank you to everyone who responded! I feel less like a failure hearing from all of you! And I really appreciate all the thoughtful input. Sent from my SM-N976V using BariatricPal mobile app

Online "support group" not very supportive

I haven’t touched a protein shake since my two weeks of post surgical liquids finished. I lost all my weight plus more, met all my protein goals & got all the nutrition I needed through the food I ate, even stopped vitamins just after I reached goal. My plan was always to get the nutrition I needed through what I ate not through supplements. I’m a question asker too. Plus I do a lot of my own research - love me some googling. I think your questions were very sensible. Can’t say the same for the responses from what you said though. Sheesh!! Do you have to be your surgeon’s support group? And why does he have you still on purées? That seems to be taking it too far at 7 weeks unless there are other health considerations at play of course. Though I’m a stick to your plan person, I think you could slowly start to add real food sources of protein & other nutrients to your diet. Maybe don't jump to a steak tomorrow but move to soft food for a week or so. Check with your nutritionalist, make sensible nutrient dense healthy food choices & then tell your surgeon when you see them. You’re doing well with your loss so far. Congratulations.

    September Surgery Buddies!!

So I’m two weeks and one day post op and I’m down 32lbs! Struggled with protein intake until the past two days when my mom (13yrs post op) introduced me to IsoPure protein. It’s not chalky or flavored like vanilla or chocolate (absolutely burned out on those flavors) it’s clear and berry or fruit flavored depending what you get. There are several. I added it to propel to get electrolytes in at the same time! Delicious! Also today I added it to unsweet tea and it’s AMAZING! Taste great! Just something that helped me and thought I’d share in case someone was struggling like I was with the common protein flavors.
  16. Hey I was wondering when did you guys eat fried food, noodles, rice, pasta been having cravings like crazy and my doctor doesn’t help
  17. Have my gastric sleeve surgery scheduled for October 25, I lost over 50 pounds dieting up until this point . Just started my 2 week pre op liquid diet . I'm am obsessing over having penne vodka with chicken ONE more time before it's time . Surgery 11 days away . Will ONE meal truly affect me 11 days from now if it's the ONE and ONLY time ? Thoughts ? I'm dying over here 😩😩😩
  18. I can assure you I don't live on beige food. I wouldn't be surprised if most of your ready meals can be healthy enough for purpose. I do most of the cooking at Casa de Tek and I am a spicy and flavorful cook and so is the food. I do prepare larger than necessary batches and prepare them for eating over the next week or three. I can find healthy enough food anywhere and enjoy the little bit that I eat. You will do fine. Day at a time and all that. Tek
  19. Well, except the potatoes have to go so you'll starve to death. (Kidding!) Let me give you an example from the liquid and soft food stages. Someone else can chime in if they like about the "regular" food so you know what to expect. There's also a whole huge thread called "Food Before and After" with photos in the Lounge. I am in the US though, and every surgeon has different requirements. I am in this phase supposed to be going for 80-100 g protein a day and about 800 calories. (I am very active, my calorie count is higher than might be normal for this phase.) One week after surgery (still in the liquid phase): 2 Core Power Chocolate Protein shakes 1 container raspberry fat free skyr 300 ml chicken broth with 11 g of cream of rice cooked into it 120 ml sugar-free Jello 120 ml sugar-free Jello with protein powder 1 bottle isopure (protein water) TOTAL: 111 g protein, 37 g carbs, 11 g fat, 691 calories Yesterday (soft foods phase): 1 wedge La Vache Qui Rit 95 g deli turkey 1 core power chocolate shake 0.5 c tuna salad with fat free mayonnaise 1 small portion ma po tofu 30 g basmati rice 120 ml sugar-free Jell-O 1 container fat-free, sugar-free tapioca pudding TOTAL: 88 g protein, 49 g carbohydrates, 19 g fat, 719 calories
  20. Even just four weeks out, the weight loss is so amazing that I put aside the yearning. And honestly, a lot of what I gorged on before doesn't appeal to me anymore. All the sweets just look terrible to me now.
  21. Bonjour, I understand. Even for many of us who love to cook, meal prep could be a chore. But here is the thing. You won't be able to eat much at all, and you'll need to concentrate on protein first, then vegetables, then if you have any more room in your pouch you can have some carbohydrate. For the first little bit after surgery, you are healing and you will need to eat liquids at first, then purées or soft foods next. My surgeon requires three weeks of liquids and three weeks of soft foods, and I am one week and a little bit into the purées. But once you are done, you can easily either find healthier ready meals (don't know about Ireland, but here in the US some markets sell "meal prep kits" with, say, a bit of chicken or fish or beef or lamb, and a veg and some kind of starchy side), or you can learn to cook. You won't need very much, so you could cook a couple of times and have enough for the whole week. It doesn't have to be beige food all the time. You will introduce foods back into your life a bit at a time and eventually eat a normal diet, just... smaller. I will say that the next time I go to France I may have trouble eating the three courses that are part of the staple meals in a restaurant... even just the entrée would be enough right now, never mind the plat principal or the dessert.
  22. Hang on a tick, I'm stuck on something here. Let me see if I have the facts correct: 1. Your dietitian thinks you're not losing weight fast enough. 2. You have lost 25.5 kg (56 pounds) in 7.5 weeks. 3. Your dietitian refuses to give you guidelines for what or how to eat beyond 60 g of protein and 2 L of water. 4. You're still on shakes at 7.5 weeks out from surgery. I think it is high time you tell the dietitian to shape up or ship out. There are plenty of dietitians out there who don't require their clients to be mind-readers. And who understand how bariatric patients lose weight. I mean, is this dietitian brand new off the wagon from dietitian school? You should be extremely satisfied. Most bariatric patients lose 7-11 kg (15-25 lbs) in the first month and then about 5 kg (11 lbs) a month thereafter, with several stalls that can last a few weeks. Expecting you to AVERAGE 2 kg a week when you have lost 25.5 in 7.5 weeks means that you could be stalled for 3-4 weeks and lose not a single gram and still come out okay. Expecting you to lose 2 kg EVERY SINGLE WEEK is—and I said what I said—daft. If you are stalled, try increasing your calories by about 100 a day for a week to see if that breaks the log jam. Even just 15g of peanut butter or something along those lines could do it. 100 cal a day times 7 days is not enough to make you gain weight.
  23. Sorry it’s been a rough week! Any resolution yet? Yes sleepers can dump however it may not be dumping because dumping tends to resolve quickly not usually days long (unless you keep eating the offending foods) Also Desitin or any diaper rash cream works wonders even for adults.
  24. I'm one month out. I'm not someone who can follow a "meal plan". I don't want to decide at the beginning of the day what I'll be eating at each meal; I need to have a choice or life feels deadly dull. That being said, I will cook something a few times a week (right now it's some sort of ground meat or bean-based dish with a spicy sauce eaten with fat free greek yogurt) and then alternate among the ones I've cooked. I portion them out into 5-6 or more servings in small plastic containers and freeze some so I don't get sick of what I've made or it doesn't go bad too soon. I'll eat them three times a day, breakfast lunch and dinner, except I will occasionally make egg product with cheese for breakfast. I would say at most I spent about 40 minutes a day on all three meals, and many days it's less than 10 minutes. Of course, I live alone and don't have to feed anyone else. I do spend some time looking at recipes, but I'll usually do this when as a form of inspiration, mostly it's things I can't have. Most people's ideas of what a post-surgery patient can have seems very bland to me and I wouldn't eat it, so I don't look at bariatric meal ideas - I go to real cooking sites and figure out how to adapt "normal" recipes. My job involves a lot of traveling so my next task will be to figure out how to eat better on the road.

Tell me about it. I discovered ROSEGAL and can’t stop ordering. Fortunately due to boredom, I came out of retirement and took a part-time job. Unfortunately, due to vacations and call offs I am working more than the three days I signed on for but I am still having a ball. The best part, for the first time in my work life I am not the fattest one there. In fact, I am second to the thinnest and I get wonderful compliments on my attire.
