What do you put in your coffee?

I drink my coffee hot, I drop a cinnamon stick in (which I chew on sometimes) and top it with keto sugar free whipped cream. A sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice on top or cocoa powder does a lot with the sent joy I get while drinking. That is my 2 sec go to. Sometimes a drop some sugar free syrup in my iced coffee (I like torani the best) and go with that and ice. Sometimes a protein shake as a mix in. Sometimes I foam up some heavy whipping cream with or without my protein powder or a dash of sugar free jello, matcha powder or even cocoa powder. Heck, I’ve even made sugar free boba using unflavored gelatin and avocado oil to drop in my cold brew. I always drop in the milk foam/cream/protein shake base then drip the hot coffee over it so it doesn’t get bitter. Coffee is my jam. Decaf or not :) I’ve never been a fan of the coconut oil coffee fat bombs.

Bone Broth Powder Protein vs. Whey Isolates

Collagen Protein by itself is not considered a complete protein because it only has trace amounts (at best) of tryptophan, an essential amino acid. As @NickelChip mentioned, some collagen protein supplements add L-tryptophan to make a more complete protein. Looking at the one your husband is suggesting however, it does not look to have any added L-tryptophan, meaning it's really not suitable. Something else to keep in mind is that whey protein has a huge number of scientific studies showing it's better at muscle protein synthesis than collagen. A protein first diet is recommended for bariatric patients due to the desire to spare muscle catabolism when on a very low calorie diet. If whey is better at muscle protein synthesis, then it makes sense to focus on whey (or alternately on lean whole foods like chicken & fish). This is the reason almost all bariatric surgeons will tell you that it's fine to take collagen, but you should be careful if you are counting it toward your overall daily protein goals. FYI, due to your issues with artificial sweeteners, you probably should be looking for an unflavored version of whey protein isolate. Because it's unflavored, it's also likely to be unsweetened. I personally like Isopure brand, but there are others that are good as well.

    A Change is Coming...

I will! I'm currently debating proteins with my husband. LOL He's sold on bone broth protein powder, but I keep reading about whey isolate. Which is better for bariatric patients?? I guess I should post this in the protein section?

December Peeps- How you all doing?

As you are saying you are struggling to take in 80 grams of protein a day, which is more than my 60 grams. I feel I must say that there is no research that this works. Also specialised hair products and medications are also shown not to work. The hair is dead already, what we shed after surgery is a symptom of that body shock. It is a speeded up process of what we would normally shed months in advance.

    Meal REPLACEMENT shakes

Yes, it's Bariatric Fusion brand that I used, NOT Bariatric Pal! Bariatric Fusion chicken soup is 27g protein, 10g carb (check with your team because their guidelines say less than 10g carb but they may be okay with it being 10g) and 160 calories. The Cappuccino flavor is 27g protein, 8g carb and 150 calories. I bought mine from Amazon and a tub runs around $45. All the flavors on Amazon fit the guidelines with the possible exception of the chicken soup. Celebrate also makes a meal replacement shake with several flavors that work with your guidelines, but their chicken soup is 24g protein instead of 25g (carbs and calories are within the guidelines). I tried that one and it was okay. I liked the Bariatric Fusion slightly more, but the benefit of the Celebrate brand is you can buy a variety pack directly from their website with 12 single serving envelopes of different flavors so you don't get bored. I also like their Tropical Twist flavor chewable bariatric vitamins if you're still looking for one, and their cherry and raspberry lemonade calcium chews are very tasty.

    DC area Patient Experience

You could mention to them that you feel like you just need a little more support and that you have other questions and would be willing to pay for an extra appointment here and there with the NP or PA so that you can get the support that you need. That worked for me. But do your research if you have other options. I would go ahead and make appointments now so that you have them coming up by the time you decide what to do. Just be sure to cancel then with notice if you don’t end up switching or for whatever appointments you don’t need so they can give them to someone else.
  8. I used to eat it a lot but stopped when I got obese (reckon that was a cottage cheese curse?). I eat it now but it has to always be savory. I make cottage cheese bowls with chili oil, cucumbers, roasted cherry tomatoes, black and white sesame seeds and herbs, I dollop that and top it with an over easy egg. I also like it with protein toast. I've never had the sweet version (I see people eating it with fruit, nuts and honey) but I don't think that will appeal to me. I also blend it with avocado, chili, lime, cilantro and salt and it makes a great topping or dipping sauce. If you want ideas on cottage cheese combos follow Toasted Table on Instagram, she's the reason I have consistently eaten cottage cheese since my VSG.
  9. The hair loss can be shocking and frustrating but save your money on supplements, special shampoos & treatments. Unless you’re lacking in the specific nutrients you require for hair growth they won’t help. The hair loss is temporary and for most lasts 3-4 months (regardless of taking supplements or not). During this time of stress and hormonal changes, your usual hair loss cycle is accelerated so you lose more hair but it is hair you would lose at some point. Your new hair is continuing to grow just at its usual rate. Meet your protein goals and ensure you’re getting in the nutrients, take a vitamins you’ve been advised to take. A blood test will show if you’re lacking in anything. Many of us cut our hair shorter as shorter hair always looks thicker and bouncier than long. And it will take less time for your new growth to reach the length of your shorter hair. Also there is no real evidence in support of collagen for hair growth (hair is made of keratin not collagen). Want to take it for your skin, go for it. I agree with @SpartanMaker: as collagen isn’t a complete protein it can’t be counted as part of your protein intake and you’ll get more collagen per dose/serve of a collagen supplement in powdered form than a capsule. It dissolves well & isn’t filling like a protein powder. If the hair loss persists or the loss is excessive, a dermatologist will be the best for you to see for help and other causes of the loss than just weight loss.

    Protein drinks without whey?

Off hand, I'm not aware of any premade protein drinks that are readily available. You could always buy a vegan protein powder and mix your own. I'm curious, is there a reason you're wanting one without whey?

    1 Year Post-op 🎉🎉

Thanks for the information. I'm a Gym Rat, but my surgeon told me I had to wait 6 weeks before I go back to swimming and cycling, and I have a personal trainer working with me on strength training so I lift weights well. I'm getting in over 80 grams of protein with my protein water and doing a lot of walking and only 3 days post op now. It has been a wild ride so far, and the surgeon called me last night to see how I was doing and checking my glucose numbers and pain...that was a shocker, who does that? My surgeon does!! He is a people person, that's way cool! Anyway, thanks again for your support, and everyone's support. I'm starting my new life happy.

    Vitamin Confusion

There’s a lot of confusion around which bariatric vitamins are “approved” or recommended by groups like ASMBS or SAGES. The truth is, these organizations publish nutrient guidelines based on research, but they don’t certify or endorse specific brands. BariatricPal Multivitamin ONE was developed to meet or exceed those core guidelines in one simple capsule a day. It includes high levels of key nutrients like ADEK, iron, and B12 that are essential after surgery. It doesn’t try to cut corners with gummies or “bariatric friendly” labels that don’t actually meet requirements. And unlike chewables that some people struggle to tolerate long term, this is just one flavorless capsule a day. A 12-month supply is $99, which breaks down to just $8.25 a month: https://store.bariatricpal.com/99 Because it contains iron, it’s best to take calcium separately to avoid absorption issues. You can find a full range of calcium options here: https://store.bariatricpal.com/collections/calcium And if you’re comparing formulas, there’s a full selection of bariatric multivitamins here: https://store.bariatricpal.com/collections/multivitamins

Which protein wraps are these? OMG looks delicious. I am such a foodie. I'm a bariatric foodie now, though, but still love it.

    May 2025 Surgeries

My 3 week liver reduction diet consisted of Proti brand foods/shakes. Don't really recommend! Breakfast consisted of a proti packet, which was usually oatmeal. Then a proti packet for an am snack. For lunch it was a another Proti packet, and a second option of either 1/2 cup of cottage cheese, 2 eggs, 2 oz of lean meat, or a 2nd packet of Proti. Mid day snack, Proti. For dinner, it was 2 oz of lean meat, a starch and a fruit. Additionally, I could have all of the veggies I wanted, as well as sugar free jello, popsicles. Proti shakes are only decent if you're able to mix them with a milk frother and add ice. The soup noodles had a weird texture, so I always picked them out. The oatmeals were just ok. The blueberry pancakes I was not a fan of. Tomorrow starts my clear liquid diet and surgery on Wednesday. Excited to be on the other side of this.
  15. I had the bypass surgery and already it doesn’t hurt to drink water or protein shakes. I’m in a lot of post op pain but excited for the future when I can simply enjoy food again. 3 months of nasty protein shakes and then normal food. I can’t wait.
  16. I tried tagging my surgeon Dr Pablo Fok Russell. He's not in the list. Im currently waiting to be wheeled to surgery. I'm so far extremely impressed. I lost a lot more weight then expected on my pre-op diet. I was allowed salad with a protein choice, 13 almonds and protein shakes. Everyone is very friendly. I had an EKG, bloodwork & xray done as soon as I arrived. The bloodwork was back in an hour! I met everyone. I like everyone. Two women on my flight rode with me here. They are getting some sort of plastic surgery. One already had a facelift already. Looked good too! I liked riding with people who were familiar. The driver was really informative. Now I'm waiting to be wheeled back!

    Protein drinks without whey?

I use Redcon1 MRE powder. It has no Whey and is very tasty. Best part is you only need 4-6oz of water or milk. It has 24 grams of protein may vary on flavor usually more. I was on premier protein and switched to redcon1.
  18. I can totally understand your fears regarding the remnant stomach. They may tell you you're fine and it's okay to proceed with SG. If not and they are recommending RYGB, then I do think you should discuss your concerns and family history of stomach cancer. Obviously your doctor would be the best source of info, but I did want to mention that the inability to do an endo is probably not as big a concern as you think. There are lots of other ways to monitor for stomach cancer in this instance. It would also be worth discussing with your doctor whether you are at increased or decreased risk of developing stomach cancer currently vs. if you did have RYGB. It's entirely possible based on the endo results that failure to act may also increase your risks, so it would be a good idea to discuss all options. I do also think it would be unwise to let this particular fear outweigh the real risks of obesity and the other comorbidities you already have. As I'm sure you know, with the issues you currently have your risks of a heart attack are quite high. Best of luck with whatever you decide.

    Hitting my first stall?

Yes, eggs are pretty pricey, I have decided to rework my budget this weekend, I know I can make it work if I do some changes, I will try not to rely on the protein drinks too much and hopefully with a few reworks, I can get more solid foods in me
  20. Hey all! I’m new here. I’ve been doing my two protein shakes per day and one lean cuisine with 2 cups of broccoli but I’m still so starving!!! I have my date for January 22,2025! Help!

    January 2025 Surgery Buddies!

60 grams of protein and 2 litres of water. Forget calories
  22. If you can hit your protein goals (as given to you by your surgical team), without the drinks, there's no real reason to continue them. If, on the other hand, you need the extra protein from the drinks to hit your goals, there's nothing wrong with using them indefinitely. Said differently, there is no specific time when you need to "give them up" post surgery. I'm over two years out and still use them. That said, I'm also shooting for 150g of protein per day, which I just can't get close to without some whey protein or a fairlife drink. If you find the premade shakes to be prohibitively expensive, you could always get powdered whey protein isolate. That's generally considered the highest quality protein powder. Other even cheaper protein powders are available, such as whey protein concentrate, but those will have more fat and lactose. I think in terms of grams of protein per dollar, it would be hard to find things as cheap as powdered whey protein. Beans would probably be about the only thing I can think of, though it's hard for most of us to eat a ton of beans since while they are protein rich, beans are not particularly protein dense. Most all meat is generally a lot more expensive than whey on a gram for gram dasis. At one time, I might have put eggs in the less expensive category, but I'm not so sure anymore without running the numbers.

How did you get your water in???

I agree with the previous poster also keep in mind that it may be an option to just get IV fluids outpatient. I didn’t need them after my safety because they didn’t operate on my stomach. I was a revision but after my sleeve I did and it was just like an office co-pay basically for me to get my fluids. It was that in the hospital, but in the different part of the hospital and you just sit in a recliner and get your bag of fluid and then leave.

    Tracking App

Hi all! I'm having some trouble finding an app that meets my needs. I want to log my food, but I am very much planning to meal prep (so cooking one bigger item, and having it across multiple meals). The issue is that most apps seem great for logging food as consumed, but not creating recipes and dividing into servings so that it's easy to track calories and protein individually. It could be user error, but I tried MyFitnessPal and Fitbit tracking. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Maintenance Preperation

Hiya Sweetie, You could try adding an extra protein shake to your day, you could sip it in between meals. Or how about a cappuccino or latte at around 100 calories. xx
