    Too much protein shake?

Long time hereditary migraine sufferer here, too. My daughter actually was hospitalized with a status basilar migraine for a week when she was 16. Her neuro gave us some of the best advice, EVER. He said don't get hungry or thirsty, those are sure-fire migraine triggers. Also, if you drink caffeine, stopping it cold turkey will absolutely trigger it. Then there's all of the triggers that are specific to the individual - processed meat (nitrates), red wine, beer, aged cheese, weather, hormones, what have you. The pre-op diet wasn't too bad for me, but I'm convinced it's because my surgeon doesn't have a strict pre-op diet unless you already have liver problems. I was only asked to replace 2 meals a day with shakes, and make my 3rd meal and any Snacks low-fat and avoid processed grains and refined sugars, fruit was fine. I didn't do all of that as well as I should have, but it allowed me to lose a few pounds. I also cut out caffeine, but I did it VERY slowly. If you're drinking plenty of Water (100+ oz a day is what I consider well-hydrated), and you're drinking shakes regularly, then I would suspect that the lack of carbs in your diet is the culprit. You didn't say if you're pre-op or post-op. If you're pre-op then I would suggest talking to your surgeon's team and seeing if there's some way you can add back in some calories and complex carbs to help with the migraines. If you're post-op, then all I can offer is to gut through it. I get VERY ill in ketogenesis, and the first 3 weeks post-op I couldn't get out of keto without eating stuff with refined sugar in it. So I just kept up the Protein and water and pushed through. Also, something my daughter's neuro told us... whenever you have a headache (migraine or not) it starts an inflammatory cascade in your brain that will turn into migraines or turn into a string of migraines. He told us on any day we had a headache of any sort, when we went to bed that night to take 800mg of ibuprofen and whatever dose of Benadryl we were accustomed to (I can take high doses because I've taken it forever, my daughter usually just takes one OTC). Obviously, you'll want to check with your doctor before taking any meds like that, but I like to share that tidbit because it has helped us reduce the string of migraines thing, or stress/sinus headaches turning into migraines the next day. Good luck!!

    Pre-Surgery Lactose Intolerant

I have used a ton of vegan protein drinks, and they are mostly all fine. I make the shakes in a shaker bottle, with ice. My goal is to drink, and I try not to focus on it too much. The protein shakes include the following (all purchased from Amazon.com): Evolve protein shakes (vanilla and mellow mocha) Vegansmart Plant-based Vegan Protein Powder by Naturade (wild berries) TOPBiT All-in-One Plant Protein Powder, Chocolate – Vegan Protein Powder, Sugar Free Protein, Stevia Free, Nut Free, Soy Free, 20g Protein Shake, Probiotics, BCAA, Greens, 1.8LB TOPBiT All-in-One Plant Protein Powder, Vanilla – Vegan Protein Powder, Sugar Free Protein, Stevia Free, Nut Free, Soy Free, 20g Protein Shake, Probiotics, BCAA, Greens, 1.8LB Naturade Plant Based Vegansmart Vegan Pea Protein – Chocolate – 20.6 oz Orgain Organic Plant Based Protein Powder, Creamy Chocolate Fudge - Vegan, Low Net Carbs, Non Dairy, Gluten Free, Lactose Free, No Sugar Added, Soy Free, Kosher, Non-GMO, 2.03 Pound I *did not like* this unflavored protein: Nature's Best Plant Based Vegan Protein Powder by Isopure - Organic Keto Friendly, Low Carb, Gluten Free, 20g Protein, 0g Sugar, Unflavored, 1.15 Pound (20 Servings). It’s a wee bit nasty.
  3. Today is 1 month and 1 day since I had my VGS surgery. And I can’t tell you all how happy I am to have had this surgery. It has made all the difference in the world to my life. I have 10x the amount of energy I used to have, almost like I have a bounce in my step again. My SW: 260 My CW: 217 GW: 175-180 It just seems like it’s really working. What I wanted to share with some people that seem to be struggling with the weight loss is that I have made my diet mostly keto. I understand carbs are just as important during the recovery time, but being more keto has helped the weight come off faster. Faster than even when I was not eating much after the surgery. I am really surprised by how fast it is dropping now... I think I’ll be at my goal weight before I even know it. Because of all this new found energy, I have been able to do so much more. I want everyone to be this happy 😃
  4. Same, keto has it merits to brake the carb cravings, but diminished returns after that.
  5. I have been in Ketosis for several weeks by keeping my net carbs under 30 grams a day. Seems to work well by eliminating hunger from my day to day life. Just curious how many others are doing Keto as well? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Carbs per Day?

My plan is high carbs, but they're low glycemic carbs with good protein content like whole grains, beans, etc. I pretty much follow the Mayo clinic diet...which is similar to Mediterranean. My group serves a diverse community of people from all over the world, lot of vegans and vegetarians...so we have a lot of options. I think high protein keto diets produce the fastest weight loss and some folks tolerate them really well. (wish I did, but I don't) My group stresses keeping the calories at 1000-1200 per day, 60+g of protein, lots of exercise, lots of water, eat simple. We do a lot of fruit and veggies and whole grains and beans.

    Carbs per Day?

My surgeon said to stay around 50g, but since i'm following (modified) keto/low carb, I stay around 20-25g or less.
  8. Hey, I'm getting sleeved at the end of the month and just wanted to hear from a few of you that have been sleeved already. My diet is awful. It's incredibly carb heavy! I know that I will be changing my diet forever now to keto style. Did any of you find this really hard? I'm worried I don't have enough will power. Anytime I have tried keto before I have never been able to stick to it. I'm worried that I'm gonna lose the weight and put it straight back on again as I always have [emoji22]

    Binging before surgery

I did not have to lose weight for surgery. I knew I was going to have a long liquid diet. I had all the food funerals I wanted. I am really glad that I did, because now when I have a craving, I can say to myself, " you had plenty of that", and remember when I did. It has made things a lot easier post-op. Especially when the time since I had anything to chew on seemed further away I don't know how people for 6 months of dieting, then a liquid diet, then post-op. One thing that I know now that I was sure about before surgery is that I can eat, fairly normally (for me I was already a lowcarb/keto person, I just fell off the wagon a lot), just in small portions. I do not feel deprived at all. Those food funerals were not really needed but I am still really glad I had them, because they helped me get through some dark days.

    Opinion

Do ya'll think those low carb-keto snacks and desserts are a slippery slope to falling back into bad habits? Those "brownie thingies" sure look good. 😩
  11. I would like to start a thread for all those following this forum that tells others about RE-losing. So if you are a patient who LOST, then GAINED, then LOST it again, please share with us all your method of losing. Did you go back to pre-op/post-op phases? A 2 ,5,8 day pouch reset? A specific low carb type plan? Keto? Paleo? Please feel free to share as this is helpful to each of us in our journey.
  12. Agreed, with the caveat that some clinics' prescribed plan IS low-carb. My surgeon's plan is one of those - not quite low enough to be keto but definitely on the lower end of the spectrum. It stayed that way during weight loss and gradually introduced higher carbs as maintenance approached. OP, IF this early does seem like overkill, given how little most of us can eat when we're just a month out. Maybe save IF for later when your weight loss has slowed down? Just a thought.

Trying to get back on Track

Did your surgeon give you a plan to follow? I had a really hard time losing my pre-op weight at first. Then I went on Pinterest and found a bunch of low carb recipes. Following the keto method helped me drop a lot of weight easily, and I was always satisfied. Its so hard figuring out what is going to work for you and your body. I decided to stop eating simple carbs and focus on carbs from veggies. Using a tracking app like MyFitnessPal really helped me with portion control. And reading the book Never Binge Again helped me deal with my food addiction. It's an ongoing struggle though! I hope you can find a plan that works well for you! You can do it!

    Stalling for TWO MONTHS.

What does your nutritionist/surgeon want you to have? Your carbs are higher than most people's teams would suggest (so early on- I can eat around that much almost 3 yrs out to maintain my weight/indulge) so that may not work for you right now. But the bottom line is sometimes the professionals recommendations along with trial & error will work better than anecdotal info from a peer. If you were tracking during the time you were consuming 800 vs 1200 cals check the trends in your weightloss. Then talk to your team. Try lower or Keto level macros for carbs, after consulting with your team of course, and see if there is any difference after about 2 weeks. Good Luck ❤
  15. Hi everyone! I'm going thru the process to get GBS so I'm wondering I've been following a lady who has had gastric bypass and after she was released to eat regular foods she is eating a keto diet which is high in fat high in protein low in cards... which I think is another term for Atkins diet?? But won't all the high fats upset your pouch and put you through dumping? Any thoughts?

    Forgot diet plan

Ok, thank you. Have tried keto. But couldn't keep it off and being a vegan. I always wanted what I couldn't have. How many calories s day? 1500 or 1200? Sent from my SM-G930U using BariatricPal mobile app
  17. I did keto for a while and it’s really hard the first few weeks but then after you get in ketosis it’s much easier. You can’t have bread at all on keto. The only carbs you should eat are green, non-starchy vegetables, which are easily under 20g of net carbs a day (net carbs=total carbs minus fiber). Focus on meat, cheese, and green vegetables. I lost a good amount of weight with keto but it gave me gallbladder and stomach problems so I had to stop and ended up 20lbs higher than I was before. So I don’t know if I’d recommend it, but that’s how to do it.
  18. So sorry for my late reply ... I went to doctor , was not keto rash , my potassium was 1.4 and it should be 3.5. White tongue also from potassium issues . Resolve was two IVs with two potassium IV cocktails , and oral potassium they had me drink. Rash clearing up 😊
  19. I’m like what the hell just happen - on the day of my surgery The weight was 330 and now 289 which is not bad - I am 6’2 and my healthy weight is about 200 putting me at 130 pounds of excess weight and I’ve lost 41 pounds post op which is about 31% from that excess weight. But for the past week now matter what I do I think I hit a plateau 😤😤😤😤😤 stuck a 289. Is frustrating at the least but I know is a long love journey. I keep my food diary and basically I am doing keto. Better get back to the drawing board and speak to my nutrition team. Anyone else has experience this post op in the initial stages????
  20. Okay, do you have time to elaborate? I've seen that many people go keto here post op and my surgeon never spoke against it. Not questioning you but if you have some feed back i want it. Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app

    What is Keto

The Keto Diet is also know as Low Carb High Fat (LCHF). It calls for high fat, moderate protein and low carb. Google will give you lots of information. Just like any diet it has its promoters and opponents. We follow LCHF in our house b/c my husband does triathlons and he finds that way of eating benefits his athletic performance. Pre-op, I felt better on it because i wasn't eating as much processed crap - kept by carbs under 60 grams. Many on Keto recommend keeping your carbs at 30 - 50 grams. I found that very difficult to maintain. I personally did not see much weigh loss, despite feeling better. Now that I am post -op, I will resume when this type of plan when I am cleared for solids. While my husband does high fat, moderate protein and low carb, I will do high protein, moderate fat. This will allow us to cook one meal - he can add the extra fat to his serving. The plan is consistent with my NUT recommendations.

How to lose regain 2+ years post vsg

One underrated tip I was given: Add more fiber. I was told to try to get at least the daily value (28g I think). I was nowhere close to it. So now I use clear unflavored fiber supplements that I can add to drinks because getting enough fiber from food alone can be challenging. I also like high fiber foods like L’oven Keto friendly wheat bread (Aldi brand) and higher fiber vegetables/foods (when I remember) https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/should-i-be-eating-more-fiber-2019022115927

Can I still eat Keto/LCHF after RNY or sleeve?

You can definitely do keto, but it might not be especially high fat for a while--most bariatric nutritionists seem to favor a low-fat, low-carb diet for new patients. And very few people get through the first few weeks without something artificial. (I relied on sugar-free jello, sugar-free popsicles, and SO MANY PROTEIN SHAKES.) If you're really dedicated, though, you could probably minimize most of that. For instance, Eggface suggests "double milk" (1 cup Milk mixed with 1/3 cup Nonfat Dry Milk Powder = 16 grams of protein per 8 oz. serving) as one option. Most plans won't force you to eat beans or fruit or high-carb veggies, though; the focus is very much on protein sources, mostly animal-based ones. If you're worried about dumping from high-fat keto, you might consider discussing the option of the sleeve instead of the bypass with your surgical team. (There are people with sleeves who experience dumping, but it's pretty rare.) But like Matt said, not everyone who goes bypass has a dumping problem from fat, either.

  25. I think having any expectation around weight loss is difficult. It’s really going to depend on: - how long ago your surgery was (it’s faster right after, it definitely slows down after 6 months - age/height/gender (never ever compare yourself to a 20 something male!!) - current weight (if your BMI is very high, you can reasonably expect a higher loss) - activity levels and exercise - your diet (how closely are you following it? What are your calories/macros? Some plans target faster weight loss, eg keto, some aim for you to lose slow and steady. - other factors, eg your hormones, gut microbiome). Even then, there will be fluctuations. Some months you will lose more and some less. This is a long road for some of us. And you will stall, and then suddenly you will drop a few rounds really quickly. And it will be annoying. My advice is to be patient and honest with yourself. If it is weight loss is slow, assess how you can improve without beating yourself up!
