So discouraged! Revision from Sleeve to Bypass...Yeah right!!
O-Town Body Rock posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Soooo....I *supposedly* had revision from sleeve to bypass on April 3rd. I started my post op week 5 yesterday. I have only lost 13lbs. I have no restriction and can eat anything. I can chug liquids...no problem. My sleeve had developed into a hiatal hernia and created a pouch that the dr removed. Aside from the pain from the incisions and sutured muscles, I feel nothing. I have asked the dr repeatedly was he sure that he did the bypass and he said yes. I am staying under 1000 calories, low carbs and getting in my protein. My liquids are at about 55oz. I just looked at my Upper GI report from after surgery and I am thinking about calling the radiology dept to confirm that I did indeed have gastric bypass. I have no dumping, no nausea...nothing. My weight has been at the same weight since week 2 post op. It fluctuates daily: 1lb lost one day, 3lb gain the next day, etc. Ireakky just feel like I am on a diet. All of this for nothing!! -
Looking for suggestions - Need to decide to resleeve or bypass
Lynnlovesthebeach replied to Tufflaw's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I wasn't a sleeve but my insurance only pays for one surgery so I felt I had to make the best decision the first time. I knew there would be no revisions. I finally decided since already had severe GERD the RNY gastric bypass was the right surgery for me. My doctor asked about a DS and I decided I didn't want that. I've never regretted my decision. -
Looking for suggestions - Need to decide to resleeve or bypass
catwoman7 replied to Tufflaw's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I wasn't a revision, but I chose bypass from the start because I had GERD pre-op. I'm still happy with my decision and i'd make the same choice if I had to make it today. As you said, bypass usually (not always, but usually) greatly improves if not outright cures GERD. Sleeve has about 30% risk of making it worse. I didn't want to take the risk. -
The OP asked for the experience of those who have had their band removed. On the revision board, most have had removal/revision in one surgery. Life post band without revision has it's own challenges. Recovery from removal can be very quick and easy or much more complex. Not everyone who loses their band can revise. In the complications forum there is a thread called Life after Lapband Removal.... Might have been a more relevant resource to offer up. Since TMF has used silly to describe my posting content, it was just a friendly reminder that we can all be silly at times.

Yes, I had my band removed several months ago. Port infections can originate at the band site and migrate along the tubing to the port. I had band complications that included achalasia like symptoms. I have no plans to revise on the advice of my esophageal specialist. Best of luck to you! _______________________________________________________________ 2muchfun: #2 I think you can find much support and info here: http://www.bariatric...eeve-revisions/ Like This Fat loss vs. muscle gained: http://www.youtube.c...h?v=PBJziqgrQgk You assumed the OP was interested in a revision, specifically sleeve. That's pretty silly. You're one of the very few X-Banders who lurk here offering advice so I sent her where the numbers are. Now she has the benefit of your story and the opportunity to explore many more bandless patients.

Anyone have Blue Shield CA? question....
swizzle replied to reachbree's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've been following this conversation intently, because I worry I'm going to face the same hurdle. I have my appointment with my surgeon tomorrow. I've printed out the pre-auth form and policy update, and have links to each in case they need to go to them directly. But I worry that they will run into the same issue when they call if Blue Shield CA isn't giving out current information. 2goldengirl, did you have to go through the grievance process? Or was your medical group or surgeon able to figure out the revised policy? Or do you know anyone who did have luck where someone was able to verify through Blue Shield CA the policy change and say "yep, that policy was revised! No more 6 months!"? As far as I can see on these forums, everyone is having difficulty with this. Thanks so much for all your knowledge on this! (Also, I know I should, but I don't know what my medical group is versus my insurance provider versus the surgeon. :/ ) -
Anyone have Blue Shield CA? question....
swizzle replied to reachbree's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey, okay so I have an update. I met with my surgeon today and the administrators did default to the "6 month" answer at first, but then I showed them the link to the pre-authorization form and the policy revision (provided by 2goldengirl) and with that, they thought it was sufficient to get the ball rolling on the 3 month suggested timeline, as per the new policy outline. Which I thought was awesome, and good for them for being good advocates for their patients!! So it seems that I am going to go through the process as outlined in the new policy, they will include that in my paperwork, and then submit for approval in three months! I just wanted to share, because I was ready for the worst, based on some of the stuff I've been reading. This was a pleasant surprise, and I'm very happy to report that - as it seems today - I won't have to jump through a million hoops! Talk to me in three months if I'm declined -
lapband to gastic sleeve need help asap!
SoCalDixieGal replied to missjegga's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I haven't had my surgery yet, but I'm revising from band to sleeve in one operation. Is the one dr saying it has to be two step because they need to previous complication to heal? Most everyone on these boards who has had a revision has done it in one step. -
Has Anyone Gone To Mexico To Be Sleeved?
IowaAndy replied to sarah nelson's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I had surgery on Dec 11, 2011 with Dr F Garcia at Hospital Mi in Tijuana. Was in the hospital from Monday until Wednesday afternoon and then in Hotel Pueblo Amigo until Friday morning when I flew home. I had a wonderful experience with Dr Garcia and Hospital Mi. The staff at Hotel Pueblo Amigo was also more than helpful with what I needed. I would go again in a heartbeat. My surgery here in the US would have been $40,000 but I paid around $6,000. I had a lapband to sleeve revision. Any questions just ask. -
I'm at the point where I've asked for removal. I've had it 18 months, and have had nothing but issues, and I'm nowhere near my goal weight (which is frustrating since I'm throwing up all of the time...) They keep calling it a "fussy band." I have other words for it, but I think intolerance is a good way to describe it. It was so frustrating to have hope in this as a tool, only to have so much trouble with it. I know what you mean when you say you feel like a failure. You're not at all! But it still is so frustrating to not get anywhere when others have had such awesome stories to share. Can I ask how long your recovery was from the removal surgery? I'm really not looking forward to another abdominal surgery, and I don't plan on getting any sort of a revision to a sleeve or bypass. I just need to have an idea about how much time to save up for recovery.

I've only lost 20lbs because among other things I have been seriously ill, and have had a port revision and have only had 2 fills. A lot of it has to do with the medication I'm taking for my illness. That's a little catty of you to mention something like that with out knowning all the facts. And regardless of what you think different things work for different people...what your doing may work for you but not for others...there are slow losers out there and there are people who have other problems that keep them from losing as fast as some one like you. Now Shell...I hope your feeling better...let us know what your doctors says.

My docs said drink up to the meal but wait 30 min til after. Pretty much as stated above. They told me it was de rig our previously for the 30 min on each side but has since been revised. And they are crazy strict with protocol.

Lost 64 Pounds, Sagging Skin. Will It Go Away?

Sorry to say, but probably not. Look into the options for revision surgery when you reach goal and maintain for 6 months or so. -
How many revisions had your surgeon done?
LilMissDiva Irene replied to CowgirlJane's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Well that sounds good! Your surgeon sounds great. Yes, its true band to sleeve revisions risk for leaks does increase by about 2-3%. I was very lucky in my revision that my only complication was some pretty bad nausea (vomited as well but only once) and my pain was pretty bad. Tiffykins did experience a leak with her revision from band to sleeve. But today, she is BETTER than OK!! Really I haven't heard many other revision stories here that were note worthy. It is my hope that everything will turn out fine, which I'm sure everything will. Like you said, even though the complication risk is elevated, it's still single digits. Its very normal though to feel a little worry while going through this. I was NOT immune to that! But, I was so ready to do it!!! -
Should have done this revision earlier!!
KattattaK replied to hmm33502's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am sooo afraid to have revision surgery! It's weird, because when I had the lap band done in 2005, I was so ready. But now, it's just not the same. I find myself thinking crazy thoughts about not being able to get anything down or suffering from malnutrition and malabsorption or what if I develop stomach cancer and there's no stomach left once the cancer is cut out. It's INSANE!!! The fact that there's no going back and the surgery is permanent really get to me. What happens if it doesn't turn out right and I'm just stuck with no way to reverse anything!? Like I said, I think crazy thoughts this time around. The lapband traumatized me for all other surgeries! LOL!!! -
I've been doing a ton of research and gone to a few support groups. I have met some very successful people with both Lapband and the sleeve. I'm curious to know how your recovery was with the sleeve? I have 3 kids...2 younger ones and I work full-time. I was planning on hopefully scheduling a December surgery date but was going to maybe only take 10 or 11days. Is that sufficient time fir the sleeve surgery? As a mom I originally was leaning towards sleeve because it seemed the least risky...but I've noticed alot of band to sleeve revisions. Would love feedback on this. Thanks!

New Mom and gaining weight
2Anne replied to dpirrello's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I've noticed most people posting here had their band put in during the last five years or so. I had mine done in 2001 and had it removed last October in 2015 after 14 years. My surgeon never advised me that it should come out after ten years, especially with old technology. I had the band removed due to pain in the port area and worries about how long I had it. My total weight loss never exceeded 65 lbs and if was 280 lbs when I had it put in. The side effects of the band was bad acid stomachs(told by the removal surgeon this was normal!) and extreme hunger. The surgeon Mr Sutton who removed my band had a lot of problems taking it out and the operative report makes horrific reading. There was acute inflammation and bad adhesions. The band was eroding into my stomach. Because I have had a band I cannot have the gastric balloon and certain other surgeries. My stomach looks like a patchwork. At my age I would not wear a bikini(I'm 69 now) but if I was younger would consider myself disfigured. Its a total mess. Also after having the band removed I had developed a huge appetite that was out of control.and I think the band irritation had caused an over-secretion of Ghrelin. This is my theory anyway and I had to fight this for 9 months as recently it has subsided. I put on 12 lbs and it could easily have been three times this amount re the extreme hunger all the time. Even after a big meal I was hungry and never felt satisfied. If you have had a success with your band you are fortunate. I wish I had never had it done but it seemed like a good idea at the time. I spent £13000 having the band inserted as there were problems, and over £4000 having it removed. Its a lot of money and having had a recent consultation with a Bariatric surgeon have decided against revision surgery. I'm sure my experience is not unique and the GB has many failures. My advice is look before you leap because I made one hell of a big mistake!!
