VSG to MGB Apr 11, 2018 with Dr Illan
Hello2018 replied to Hello2018's topic in Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum
I am 31-wks post op, from VSG to MGB. Iam am down 60lbs. I do Keto and Paleo. I get food delivered to my home and prepare the meals. This helps alot to stay on track. I eat lots of salad! My dumping syndrome is maintained by limiting my sigar intake, I can tell when I start to OD on sugar. I can no longer eat flour tortillas, I cannot digest them as well as raw veggies. Broccoli is a horrible gas veggie for me and I cramp up. I cannot eat thick bread or pizza dough, even bagels are difficult. I do eat a bite then I’m done. Excercise, I run now 3-4 days a week. Ran a 5K. I excercise regularly, 1mi a day, stairmaster, rower, weights. I am still loosing but at a slower rate now. I also have extremely saggy skin. I cannot change it no matter how much I exercise. I notice that I have to reset my exercise or food diet to continually loose or I plateau out. -
I do IF (intermittent fasting) as well as a low carb approach. It is "defacto" keto, even though I some days eat 40-50g of total carbs, my net (minus fiber) may be between 25-30g net carbs. I can assure you I am in ketosis. I do keep my fat lower cuz I don't tolerate it very well right now. I met 1st goal (150lbs) at 8.5 months and am 9lbs away from 2nd goal. I hope to reach that in about 30-45 days. Then beyond to Goal #3 which will be end goal and I don't know where that will end up. I hope somewhere around 125-130lbs. I eat about 2 meals per day, sometimes 1, sometimes 2 meals + small snack. Here was yesterday's plan. It was whacky. I normally have way more veg on there and usually have a daily salad, but I'd fasted for 39hours the day before and was very hungry for fat and protein--so I ate it:

GALS who started their journey over 300 lb+<br /> +
TX4everLinds replied to Frustr8's topic in The Gals' Room
I am finally starting to see some losses again. Just wanted to encourage those who may be stalling or feeling like why did I even do this?! I started at 301 and lost 60lbs before surgery, averaging about 10lbs per month by eating Keto. I had surgery first week of September and lost 25lbs in September. I struggled a lot with reflux and was re-hospitalized for 2 days and struggled to keep even sips of water down. This was (mostly) remedied by Rx nexium. I still struggle some. It’s a major learning curve! In October I only lost 2.6lbs...for the whole month! Dietician said I wasn’t eating enough and my metabolism was quitting on me. It’s just taken me this long to figure out how and whT to eat. Still learning! Today on November 6 I’ve already lost 3.2lbs this month. So I think my body was in shock in October and I wasn’t consuming enough. I’m excited about November and have to remember that with 25lbs in September I’m still on track to average 10lbs/month like I did before surgery. I know this will change as I get smaller but I have to keep reminding myself I WILL GET SMALLER! I’m at 215 today and looking forward to onederland! -
Anyone doing the Keto diet after VGS? If so how is it working for you?
-
Tripple yummy looking! I cant' wait!!! I don't know what's gotten into me but lately I've been watching all these youtube bariatric, whole30 and Keto cooking shows. Today I just bought a Instapot and a Air Fryer to get ready to eat again. I'm not craving anything, but just want to eat healthy from the start.

This slow process is killing me!
CrankyMagpie replied to Ed_NW's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would be frustrated, too. My pre-op diet was a lot more bearable than what you're doing, in that it was essentially the long-term diet of a bariatric patient,* just ... more, because I didn't have the tool yet. Protein first, then veggies/fruit (fruit was limited to 1 serving per meal, but I could have it with every meal if I wanted), and I was allowed whole grains, as well (also limited to 1 serving per meal -- 1/2 cup brown rice, 1 wrap, and so on). Snacks were not encouraged, but I could have a cheese stick if I really needed it. Unlimited sugarfree jello and popsicles got me through a lot of night time hunger, since I was supposed to be losing 10% of my body weight on that diet. (And I did, just barely.) Keto's a lot harder for me to stick to, although if you've been doing it since April, I guess by now you've got your household and friends working with you (for instance: not doing meetups at pizza joints all the time). I wonder if you might want to take this time to switch over to something closer to what Kaiser will want you to do, long-term? You'll regain a little of your natural water weight, going back to eating fruit and higher-carb vegetables, and some people find that to be too upsetting, so this is just an idea for you to consider, no pressure. But once I settled into it a little, I found the normal long-term bariatric patient diet to be really doable, and that encouraged me a lot, in the time leading up to my surgery--I didn't have these "I can't do this diet anymore" feelings, so much (until the liquid diet, ugh). It didn't feel like a diet. I even had small cheats, from time to time (examples: a small piece of pie at my partner's birthday, a trip out with friends who wanted frozen yogurt--mine was heavy on the fruit, light on the yogurt, pizza with some veggies on it a maximum of once per month), and continued to lose weight. It felt good, for me, anyway. To be clear: I'd still have been frustrated to have the process take so long. Not in an "I can't do this" kind of way, but just because the anxiety of having it hanging over me, and having to hold off on some things I wanted (a new job, mostly) would have been upsetting. I just wouldn't have suffered any additional strain from the diet. Anyway, whether this is a good idea for you or not, your feelings are entirely justified. It's reasonable to be upset. *sure, sure, lots of bariatric patients do keto, post-op, but there aren't that many doctors that force it on you -- I know for a fact Kaiser doesn't -
I started the process back in April of this year (I think) and I don't even meet the surgeon to discuss what surgery I will be getting until Dec 4th. It's really frustrating when you see other people moving along at a quick pace and I'm stuck in the pre-op diet mode. This just seems like another diet that I'm tired of being on already. This is why I fail at diets. I've lost a lot of weight up to this point but now that I've reached the weight that I'm required to be at for surgery, I've stopped tracking what I eat. I just half heatedly follow a Keto diet and hope it stays off util my appointment on the 4th of next month. Who knows when the actual surgery will be scheduled. I heard through the grape vine that one of the two surgeons that perform WLS at Kaiser Overlake Hospital in Bellevue, WA quit and now there's only one to take on the enormous work load. That would explain the excruciatingly long wait. Anybody else experiencing frustration like this?

Forbes: Why high protein diets may be linked to Cancer
Creekimp13 replied to Creekimp13's topic in Rants & Raves
Ah no..not doxing, sharing a publicly advertised site where the owner (Fluffy) makes money plugging the Keto diet. Illustrating a possible explanation for her fanatical obsession with everything I post. Also interesting...her bio says she's been eating a high protein low carb diet for 14 years. When was your cancer diagnosis, Fluffy? A few years ago, you say? Hmmmmm.... -

Well at least I'm not necro-posting. I hate when that happens! And hey! Speaking of thanks! LOL. Thanks for plugging my keto blog! (Not much to see there folks--especially since I quit updating and keeping it active a few years ago due to terrible lymphedema leftover from cancer surgery and lymph node removal.)--which is probably not that helpful to most of you since it's based on eating substantially more cals in a day than most of us can manage now, and for most of us, the recipes have too high of a fat content (especially us bypassers). Maybe one day when I'm healthy and fit (hey, I can dream!), I will either continue the blog with an update about my WLS journey and begin a new section devoted to bariatric low carb eating--which for me is protein adequate, "lower-er" fat aka moderate fat, and low carb. But for the foreseeable future, I do not envision that happening any time soon. Although, the blog does still help a lot of people -- mostly those ketoneers who do not have altered gut anatomy and have to balance the challenge of eating a very low calorie diet while trying to satisfy their daily protein needs for a healthy life like we do here at BP. -

Hey Fluff, thanks for the bump. While I realize you do not value this information or believe in it's relevance, I do appreciate that your comments keep it moving up the board so that others who might find it of value can find it. By the way, how's business? Sell any of your keto cookbooks lately? http://fluffychixcook.com/ Cheers:) -
I am 18 months post op and am about 20 lbs away from my goal. I like where I'm at but would love to lose the last 20 lbs. I am seriously considering doing keto but am curious what that looks like over the course of a day. Current keto eaters: Can you list what your meals and snacks are in a typical day? Also do any of you do intermittent fasting along with it?

I have a keto rash pre-op my surgery is in 3 days. Will this delay surgery. Has anyone gotten this pre-op?
-
I'm 4 months post op today from my SIPS procedure. I have lost 83lbs in total since the start in early June, and 68 lbs since surgery, however I was hoping to be further along and even at my last Dr appointment they indicated I could have lost more and were surprised I hadn't. I seem to be averaging 11 lbs a month over the last 3 months, but what keeps happening is that I lose 11lbs in one week, then NOTHING for 3 weeks!! Is this normal? At first I thought it was just a stall, but the last 3 months in a row have had exactly the same pattern. Don't get me wrong, I'm really happy to have lost the weight I have, but I was kind of hoping for it to go a bit quicker, because I have a total of 200lbs to lose and everyone tells me (including my Doctor!) that after the first 6 months it will slow right down. I took on board what they said and have been sticking to the food plan and going to the gym, because I was terrified if I didn't lose 100-150lbs in the first 6 months, I wouldn't get to my goal. But seems like my body had different plans. I also don't understand how I can have a daily calorie deficit of approx 1000 cals, but for 3 weeks out of each month, not lose anything? How is my body actually powering itself during that time? My hair is falling out in clumps and my skin isn't great, so I'm guessing thats what's happening instead, but seriously....how can I be running on negative?? My average daily food intake looks like this: Breakfast: either 1 boiled egg with a little mayo, or 1 protein shake (premier protein). Once a week I will have 1/2 a cup of rice cereal. Lunch: I batch cook chilli or soup with added protein at home to take to work. Usually have it with 1oz of pecans or macadamias (trying to follow keto) Mid-afternoon snack: cheese stick or protein shake (depending on whether I had one for breakfast or not) Dinner: Varies, but generally I go for pressure cooker chicken (between 3 and 5 oz) and green veg, or tuna salad, or 3-5oz of pork chop. 2-3 times a week I will have 3oz of sweet potato, but thats not every day and depends on how hungry I am. My average calorie intake is 99% of the time between 800 and 1150 and I hit at least 80g of protein every day. I try to keep carbs under 30g, but often average about 50g (gross) I count my water and get at least 64oz every day. I go to the gym 2-3 times a week, and on average I do 45 mins of cardio (cross trainer/eliptical and bike) and then 10-15 mins of weight training. Outside of this i try to be as active as I can, and I average round 6000-7500 steps daily (I have an office job so can be tricky) Does anyone have any advice or thoughts on what else I can do to try and speed this up? Should I do different things at the gym, or just try to go more often? Or should I mix up my food a bit more? I'd really appreciate any ideas.

Medications with weight gain side effect
FluffyChix replied to tnks2hp's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Ok, so here's the deal. Most meds will not "make you magically gain" if you don't actually put the extra calories in your body that are gonna drive weight gain. I say this cuz I know first hand. One of the worst drugs ever for weight gain cuz it def drives up cortisol and insulin is prednisone and even worse, IV prednisone! I was on IV prednisone for 3 months and during that time, actually LOST weight--about 60lbs. BUT, I was doing IF plus caloric restriction. And because I cut out high glycemic carbs and only focused on good lean protein, leafy greens, and low glycemic veg with a tiny bit of healthy fats, I was not hungry at all. I went into ketosis and that helped curb the hunger effects from the prednisone. I am also on Femara (a cancer drug that shuts down hormones and makes you hungry and increases insulin). I gained a crap ton of weight on this drug when I gave up and was eating my crappy diet. But in the last 18 months that I'm back on low carb/modified keto and eating a calorie controlled diet and doing IF -- I've lost 135lbs. So it is possible. My weight loss is slow. Only about 70lbs give or take since surgery in February. But I'm about 2lbs from first goal of 150 right now. It can be done!!!! Hang in there. Take your meds, feel better, move more, go low carb!!!! Eat those leafy veggies and lean protein and a bit of healthy fats!!! Drink lots of water!!!! You got this! -
Do sugar substitutes cause dumping
Johnny2Thumbs replied to elcee's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Unfortunately I don't get dumping so I wouldn't know about the sugar substitutes. Sugar alcohols leave a bad taste in my mouth so I stay away from those. If I eat too much sugar I'll kind of feel icky but it's not the typical dumping symptoms. I found a great sugar free chocolate substitute that doesn't have sugar alcohols either and it really tastes good. It's ChocZero's Keto Bark and can be found on Amazon. Good alternative, especially since my appetite may have gone away, my sweet tooth apparently has not. -
Can someone show me a light at the end of the hair loss tunnel?
looly replied to josephsmom's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
This is just what I do - as well as taking vitamin/mineral supplements and Biotin. I'm four months out and haven't lost any hair (yet!) It's pretty much what I was eating before surgery, but now I'm just eating side plates of food and no booze. Thanks for posting the keto pyramid, Jeaniered! -
The link between high protein diets and cancer
summerset replied to Creekimp13's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Biohacking? Not really my kind of beef since I managed to jump off the self-optimization wagon. Anyway... I think you're missing my point that a lot people associate insulin release only with carbohydrate intake and this is simply not true and I'm not sure why you're answer seems to be so over the top because this is all I wanted to say. If you want to live a keto-life and enjoy that and there is even research to back you up, that's absolutely fine However, in the end what this guy has to say is just another opinion, based on his research. Other researchers have other things to say, based on their research and we're all back to square one again. -
The link between high protein diets and cancer
FluffyChix replied to Creekimp13's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
But you are STILL missing the point. In a thoughtfully constructed low carb or keto diet, protein consumption IS NEVER HIGH! It is only PROTEIN SUFFICIENT and that varies on your individual LBM, level of activity, age, gender and several other factors. And that number changes as you lose weight or if any of those variables change! My oncologist, a world-renown hematologist/biochemist who is one of the most well-documented researchers on hormone positive breast cancer, was on board with my low carb and IF approach during chemo/radiation/surgeries and now. I eat the same protein I always ate that is adequate only for my needs. It's about 60-74g of protein per day. Closer to 60g of protein per day as of right now. That's about 2 eggs, a pouch of tuna mixed with some 2% cottage cheese, and 3oz of grilled chicken per day. LOL. Nowhere would that constitute a "protein glut" or "gobs of protein" or be anything out of the ordinary in any form of diet! About 2-3oz of protein cooked per meal! That's it. Boom, you're done! LOL. -
Intermittent Fasting Daily Menu/Results/Accountability
FluffyChix replied to FluffyChix's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I can absolutely attest to this! You can cram pack a buttload of veggies (leafy and low glycemic) into 40g of total carbs per day...even in 20g of total carbs. I am now averaging loosely between 20-55g of total carbs on any given day that net out and average to anywhere from about 15g-35g of net carbs give or take. And I'm am squarely and fairly in ketosis. Now granted, I've been keto adapted for years!!! And I'm now exercising every day... But, for most of us in the first stages of WLS, we are ketogenic by virtue of our very low calorie diet (VLC) even in the absence of being low carb. Keto happens through deprivation of calories or by suppressing carbs (completely independent of fat or proteins!). Boiler Plate Disclaimer: BTW! NOT that I am pushing my woe or trying to recruit! Just offering anecdotal commentary!!! I fully support your individual woe regardless of what it is...as long as it's something you can sustain for a lifetime! And even if it isn't, as long as you can do it to get you to the finish, then have an excellent exit strategy to a lifelong plan, yeeehaw!!! CUDOS!!! I'll be your cheerleader and your huckleberry! -
Had the balloon in 2016. I paid 7,000. It was terrible. Vomitted for 3 days straight. After that I had severe stomach cramping for months. My stomach soon got used to the ballon so I ate as much as I wanted. After the balloon is removed you end up with a large space in your stomach and guess what that is filled up with? Yep food!!! It is a terrible waste of money. It doesn’t get to the root of the problem which is why I over eat. I lost only 18 lbs. I have been doing the Keto diet for 5 months now. It is hard but is helping me get over the emotional eating problems. I have lost 25 lbs doing Keto. I honestly think this was a good idea in the beginning but now think they should take this procedure off the market. Good luck to any one deciding to get the balloon. It is an expensive waste of money!

Food Before and After Photos

Here's the recipe I used yesterday out of MFP. I made it up cuz we now think Mr. F. has a coconut allergy that makes his mouth swell. (BTW, the protein powder is the unflavored one). But, honestly? The recipe for Mile High Silver Dollar Pancakes (and the Bake Mix I created) are the best ever and worth the time of making them up and keeping the biscuit mix made up. But they might need to be adjusted to make them more bariatric friendly. Here's the link to them. http://fluffychixcook.com/mile-high-silver-dollar-pancakes-low-carb-gluten-free-options/ Here's the link to the FCC Low Carb High Fiber Bake Mix: http://fluffychixcook.com/mile-high-keto-biscuit-mix-low-carb/ LOL, aren't you glad you asked? Ha. This is my old blog that I used to keep before my lymphedema got so bad. It was a low carb keto blog, but many recipes would have to be modified to make them lower fat and bariatric friendly...but truly some of the best "bready" stuff on the net IMHO that was rich in fiber (prebiotic fibers and soluble fibers). -

Hilarious! My average protein intake last week was 60g. I'm gonna die!!!!!! Nooooooooooo!!!! And so are you! hehehe LOL, and I don't know about you, but most of my protein comes from fish, shrimp, chicken, turkey, and then *gasp* get prepared...eggs/egg whites/some limited dairy/ as well as *bigger gasp* some nuts, seeds, a couple of beans when I'm feeling defiant and a crap ton (about 1# a day) of very choice leafy greens, brassicas, cruciferous veggies, mushrooms of all varieties, alliums, and summer squashes--even a winter squash or root veg now and then when I feel a wild hair...OMG! Dying. I tell ya! It's cognitive dissonance--pure and simple. She makes assumptions about the low carb/keto woe and she has not one bean of information about it, and yet repeatedly slams us. And, last I heard, wasn't the advice to eat protein first coming from our docs and RDs? I don't know about you, but I followed my doc's plan. Didn't you? ((hugs)) -

"The researchers said they recommend eating about 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight every day in middle age. For example, a 130-pound person should eat about 45 to 50 grams of protein a day, with a preference for plant proteins, the researchers said." No link to the study in this inflammatory and misleading article. Also the definition of 0.8g-1.0g/kg of weight is the average recommended protein percentage for most non-endurance, normally activity people, by noted keto specialists: Dr. Stephen Phinney, Dr. Jeff Volek, Dr. Eric Westman. Dr. Jason Fung, board certified nephrologist and IF/keto evangelist puts that protein requirement closer to I think, about .56g/kg of body weight. So wow...where are the gobs of protein being recommended in low carb/keto diets? https://peterattiamd.com/is-red-meat-killing-us/ -
Why I eat baked potatoes, brown rice and whole grain bread
FluffyChix replied to Creekimp13's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You didn't mention this, but their flour was rationed and consumption extremely limited, as were fruits. You just listed a host of confounding items. Also limited as you mentioned is sugar. So during this time, they limited sugar, flour, fruits, baked goods. They ate high fat tinned meats, high fat butter (limited), real meat was limited, eggs/bacon as was alcohol and beer were limited...many fasted but def observed a calorie restricted diets. BUT, the issue with the people who do low carb or keto is NOT that it's our way or the highway, or that we believe and say that ALL people MUST low carb or die...the issue is with having alternate agendas so rudely and repetitively shoved down our throats and lambasted for believing in the efficacy of our woe (way of eating). The other issue is having our dietary choice misrepresented by nonfactual BS. And most of us are sick of it. Cuz the OP posts it OVER and OVER and OVER ad nauseum. Like it's being shoved down our throats with the force of Thor's mighty hammer. Most of us who are objecting are all in the same camp: THERE IS NO ONE DIET that is suitable for everyone! LOL. We pretty much all agree that we must find our own path through the woods to arrive at a sustainable liveable diet that turns into a forever lifestyle. And that is A-okey-dokey with us!!!! I'm glad this high carb diet works for OP and others. I am. More power to them. They clearly did not have the same degree of metabolic derangement or medications that necessitate a low carb, adequate protein, lower fat diet as I have. LOL. That's ok. LOL. The even bigger question is why then, if they can now magically tolerate all manner of carbs, why did they get so fat they needed bariatric surgery? And how is their lifestyle modified so they won't repeat history? But I do hope we all agree, that you wouldn't give a diabetic or pre-diabetic heaps and heaps of carbs and expect their insulin levels and blood sugars to improve. At least I hope that's a universal understanding cuz if it isn't, then someone is engaging in magical thinking. And btw, wouldn't it be fun? Let's all make a pact to meet back here in 3-5 years and measure our success with pics, weights, and tape measures. -

I took protein drinks, could never quite reach the required water level. Once 8 got past the first couple of months I followed the keto diet which is very high protein and it was really good and easy. Now eat what ever I want but very small amounts.
