How Can I Drink More Water??
DandelionSun replied to AJSci27's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I’m 5 weeks out and having a horrible time with water. The drink mixes have been too sweet now so I try to do a little bit at a time and see when it’s flavorful but not too sweet. Even sugar free Gatorade is too sweet and I try to dilute it. After my first bout with dehydration I started to pedialyte to my water. It has sugar, but all the true hydration drinks do. it’s hella sweet too, so I dilute that as well. My problem is the doctor just told me I HAVE to up my calories to 800, as I only get between 550-650 a day. Now with all this extra food I have less time to drink because we have to wait 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after eating to drink. I just don’t have the hours in the day or the space in my stomach to drink all this water. Do you think I might have a stricture? -
Brain fog? Walking? Questions.
Fred in Pa replied to Mike.J.Y's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi Mike, Brain fog comes from the anesthesia, and also the physical shock to the body as it’s healing. Mine took a good six weeks before I started feeling somewhat normal mentally. I still have days when I have the blahs and I’m four months out. Calorie deficit post surgery also plays a role as does hydration, which is why you need to keep your protein and water goals in mind. Walking took a while to build back up. Before surgery I was at 3 1/2 miles about five times a week. I’m now at 4 miles sometimes 5, five days a week and that took me about three months to get to. Of course, your mileage may vary, depending on your age, weight, etc. -
I didn’t exercise before surgery & I didn’t after either. Just upped my daily activities & changed some routines (park further away, make multiple trips up & down my stairs to carry groceries, walk up escalators, walk at a pace, etc.). Sure I use resistance bands & do some stretches now but that’s really for my back & to keep me limber - I wouldn’t burn 30 calories. Not exercising didn’t hinder my weight loss or maintenance (lost more than my goal & have maintained with about a kilogram regain from my lowest weight - am four years post surgery). I also ‘exercise snack’. That is I do my stretches, etc. in short batches about 4 times a day 5-10 minutes each. They say this is just as beneficial as doing a single period of activity. You may find that easier on your body. Exercising only accounts for about 10% of any weight you are to lose. So want to lose 100lbs, exercising may only help you lose about 10lbs. Of course there are many other benefits to being active. Try using resistance bands to build strength, look into the you tube videos about exercises for those with mobility issues. A lot are done seated or lying down. Water based activities may be useful. Try one of those recumbent exercise bikes (hire before you buy) as they put less pressure on your joints.

This stall is breaking my spirit.
CarmenG replied to pickayla's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I feel your pain. Same thing is happening to me. Had surgery June 19th, lost 10 more lbs, and have been stalled for the past 15 days. Everyone on here, though, says to just keep on trucking. As disheartening as it may be, it's very normal. Not that that makes us feel any better, huh? Just know you're not alone in your stall or in how you feel. Sometimes upping your calories and your physical activity will break the stall. That's what I'm trying, but I'm only gonna weigh myself on Sundays. Wishing you the best of luck! -

Homemade Pancakes. I only had 1 which is 1/6th the calories tracked This is my first time using Greek yogurt in pancakes and I think this is my favorite way to make them. I remember being a child and watching my brother make pancakes from scratch for everyone and now understanding it’s a labor of love (because it’s easier to buy frozen) but getting the “these are amazing” comments are priceless. Now if could only get everyone to enjoy kale salad with me… Doubtful -
I'd like to know y'all's experience with sugar alcohols/sugar substitutes. When I was in my pureed stage, my diet/menu information stated that I could eat sugar-free pudding. I had one and experienced harsh stomach pain for the entire night until the next morning. However, I recently treated myself to some plain oatmeal and added stevia packets and had no issues. I looked up the ingredients to the Jello brand sf pudding and each cup has 4g sugar alcohols. It doesn't state exactly which "itol" it has, though. Stevia (depending on how it's combined) is mostly erythritol. I'm looking for some dessert-ish foods that can satiate my sweet tooth (also trying to help my 16-yr-old daughter by replacing her regular foods with low calorie, low carb, low sugar options). When I started on my WLS journey mid-May, she became inspired and has lost 17 lbs so far! Ideas? Suggestions? Experiences?

The right solid food will get you a really big serving of protein. Boiled chicken, ground turkey, and definitely fresh seafood. A little goes a long way. For example, 2 oz of chicken breast is about 90 calories, 18g protein, and 0 carbs (without breading or frying of course). Also, if you have the time, you can eat small amounts 4 or 5 times a day, rather than just 3 typical meals. At the end of the day, if you haven't reached your protein goal, use a protein shake or a protein shot (3oz = 25g protein) to hit your goal. It could take a little practice. You could also create a schedule or set reminders on your phone. Using a nutrition app helps a lot. I use Baritastic. I log what I eat/drink and it helps me see where I'm at throughout the day. You'll do great!

Food Aversions After Surgery

So far my only aversion is beer. I can't stand the feeling of it on my tongue or the sour taste. I was an avid beer drinker and now, hard pass. I think is the hop because I can do champagne but I'm actually glad I can skip it and save those empty calories. -
I stopped losing weight after VSG
LindsayT replied to aussiedoodlelover94's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can understand that to be frustrating. Just brainstorming thoughts... What types of foods are you eating? For example, sticking to low fat/sugar/carb and high protein. What about drinks? Low to no calorie. Physical activity? Cardio and strength training. What about medications? Too much sodium? Water weight? Are you still tracking your food and fluids? Has your team done blood work lately? What does the nutritionist say? Another way to measure progress is by measuring different areas of your body versus just the scale. Maybe you're losing inches instead of pounds. How about the way you feel or activities you can now do. Hopefully, you and your team can figure out what is going on. -

JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES
sleevedinthe817 replied to Mira88's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’ve been fatigued too. I wake up pretty energized and then by the afternoon I’m sleepy. Granted, we had family here right after my surgery and we were running around everywhere. Normally, I could walk at my son’s baseball tournaments just fine, but going from the parking lot to the field had me a little winded. I don’t think I’ve fully recovered yet. Plus, the minimal calories doesn’t help. -
Food Aversions After Surgery

They did suggest that particular brand of protein shakes, but the unflavored protein powder was my idea. They did give me literature to explain each eating stage that also had suggested menus. They did not give me explicit instructions on exact nutrition information such as calories, carbs, and fiber. But I'm a 14-year veteran of a sleeve gastrectomy. There are a lot of things that I figured out by trial and error (like losing my gall bladder 2 years after getting sleeved due to TOO MUCH protein) that have really helped me this time around. -

This is the yogurt I’m in love with. For a while I wasn’t able to eat yogurt without my stomach hurting. This one does just fine!! It’s Coconut Protein Yogurt. 25grams of protein /3 sugars/4 fat grams/8 carbs/170 calories. I put Jumbo blueberries in this and eat this for breakfast -
Calories for Phase 5 or 8 weeks PO
Spinoza replied to cocoduan's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Plans are all so different! I was given no guidelines at all about post op eating other than sticking to the stages texture wise. Nobody ever suggested any calorie intake in particular. I asked people here! I think that at 8 weeks I was probably at 700-800 calories daily. I remember I used to eat some nut butter at bedtime if I can't reached something close to that. I agree with the others that protein and fluids goals are still the most important thing. -

we were told not to count calories early out. With as little as you're likely eating, calorie intake isn't going to be a problem. We only were told to count protein grams and fluids. -
Calories for Phase 5 or 8 weeks PO
Fred in Pa replied to cocoduan's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
At 8 weeks I was at about 800 calories per day. I went mostly on my restriction and making sure to make good food choices. That equated to about 5 to 7 ounces per meal depending on the texture. Most of my calories came from protein. My team didn’t give a calorie goal but instead advised what I outlined above. I am now at four months, and have added in more exercise, and therefore more calories. I have slowly added in carbs while watching my blood sugar levels as well to balance my diet. Looking towards maintenance, I was told to balance calories and activity to maintain weight…all while making good food choices. -
Im using myfitnesspal to see my macros but wondering how much calories should i consume veryday at this stage (8 weeks) my drs paper doesnt say anything clear about it. Please some help.

Honestly and genuinely, and without disagreeing with anyone here (because only they can know what has worked for them and all of our experiences will differ) stalls and plateaus are a completely normal part of losing weight after WLS. If you stick rigidly to the plan you have been given then in the vast majority of cases stalls will break, plus eventually (sooner or later - and people get there at different rates) you will get to your new set weight. That weight might not be your ideal weight but that's what the surgery does. All of the side stuff you do along the way makes little to no difference IMO. It's window dressing. And we kill ourselves angsting about it. Sure, if we've been on a long stall and we then decide to increase/decrease protein/carbs/exercise/type of exercise/duration of exercise/CALORIES/whatever, and we resume losing weight, it is human nature to attribute the renewed loss to whatever we did. But we're working with an experimental group of 1 (me) with no control group. Basically if all the time we're sticking to our programme then that's what kick starts the new loss, not the other stuff. If I could go back in time 20 months I would just say to my post-op me "stick to the plan, use your tool, and see how far you can get. You will lose rapidly and lose slowly with no rhyme or reason. Stop comparing yourself to others - they're different to you. Surgery works, stick to the plan!!!!" I really hope this helps someone else.

How Long Do Stalls Last?
CarmenG replied to CarmenG's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Thanks, ladies, for responding. I can try that, but I'm so paranoid of taking in more calories and then actually gaining! Ugh! I'd just sit on the floor and cry. Maybe I can add a protein shake at night, as a "midnight snack"? -

Wow, you're getting some great exercise in! That's awesome. Well, as for the carbs, like my tuna will have light mayo, that has carbs, cheese slices and that laughing cow wedge has a few carbs, but honestly the rest of the carbs come from my daily intake of vitamins. I take a multivitamin 3x a day, an iron chewable, a calcium chewable, added b12, and added biotin. See the screenshot? It comes out to 75 calories and 21 carbs. -

This is going to sound crazy but …. Up your calories to 600. You’ll likely break through your stall that way. As for the stall itself, they can last a month or so. Just focus on following your plan, and drinking water. -
How Long Do Stalls Last?
CarmenG replied to CarmenG's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Well, your weight loss is really great. I lost like that when I had the sleeve in 2009. Ended up losing 149 lbs in the first 18 months. I've read and was told that revisions lose a lot slower because our bodies have adapted to a small amount of calories, so they hold on to them for dear life. I'll eat like 1 scrambled egg and 1 oz of turkey for breakfast, 1/2 cup of albacore tuna with 2 tbsp light mayo for lunch, 2 oz of chicken breast and a laughing cow Swiss cheese wedge for dinner. I am only up to 15 minutes on the treadmill though. I'm upping the time little by little. I was cleared just this past Monday for the treadmill. Maybe my carbs are too high or my protein is too low? I wasn't told to count calories, but I've read that at this point it should be between 300-600 cal/day. I use the Baritastic app to document my daily nutrition and H2O. It's pretty neat. -

First surgery / Lost 55lbs with pre surgery diet in 5 months doing atkins / low carb. They only told me no coffee first 2 weeks. Then ok and said max 3 cups a day. I handle it great no problems. I did wait 2 weeks before trying any. I am only eating the ensure max protein shake in the morning mixed in the coffee. Protein shake by itself for lunch. 2 eggs or a can of tuna or half a can of chicken chunk breasts for dinner. keeping it simple and I am hardcore. Not counting calories at all.. I am counting protein and carbs.. Keeping carbs under 10 grams a day and you can calculate the protein its a lot.. They took my cigs. they took my weeed.. they are not taking my coffee
