Oh wow! They let you have food so soon! Maybe this is why I'm so hungry! I received my surgery at the Univerisity of Kentucky Hospital. And yeah, I've been noticing everyone's pre/post-op diets are so different. My pre-op diet was only a week-long (clear liquids only) and I continue clears for a week post-op. Tomorrow I can do "full liquids" which is pretty much creamy soups for a week, then pureed foods for a week. From there it's soft foods, then adding in the rest by Week 6.

3weeks post op feeling like I am failing Help!!
njlimmer replied to sarahhayes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm sorry... can you clarify your post? You said you lost 30 pounds in a week but haven't lost any weight? Am I not reading it right? Regardless, you have to give yourself time to heal. What food are you eating? On my plan, I was just starting the pureed stage. The focus for me was water and then protein. -
Any October 2021 Surgeries?

Yes we are in this together, I had a caesarean with my son too but I found this pain far worse than that. everyone is different though. what hospital did you have yours? It seems every hospital does things differently 1-4 weeks pureed. 4-8 weeks soft foods 8-12 weeks normal foods. but also told it’s our journey and it’s just a guide. We don’t get an appointment post op for 6 weeks so literally have to get on with it. it’s so nice to know someone who’s going through it around the same sort of time as me. I’ve posted the guide they gave me. xx -
Any October 2021 Surgeries?
Shrinkingvee replied to devotion's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hiya, I was the same the first few days to a week was very hard to get sips down and wasn’t drinking enough, I’m still not and I’m 2 and a half weeks post op. my Bariactric nurse suggested soups in between meals to up my fluid intake. we are supposed to have at least 1.8 pints a day, 1 litre, I’ve only managed it once but I’m trying. mist a learning curve. you will get there, it gets easier, my nurse actually told me to add no added sugar squash to make it easier to drink and it has seemed to work. We are told to start soft foods like flaked fish etc after 3 weeks and now until then puréed food. I get down about 1- 1 and a half table spoons worth of food but because I was due a period I struggled the last few days of actually feeling hungry although probably head hunger as when I’m hormonal I normally feel more hungry and eat more so that was a struggle. I’ve not feeling sick but have suffered a lot with the runs and had to take Imodium. im trying to eliminate what food it might be. I was told to stop taking the Zoton as it can cause diarrhoea so got to wait until it’s out of my system. I have recovered quite well as incisions are nearly healed and I’m able to sleep on 1 side now rather than on my back. my stomach inside where they pulled my stomach out is the most painful but believe me day by day it does get better. I was given 9 days to prepare for the gastric sleeve and I’ve found most support online, I really was walking in the dark with it. I have PCOS and metabolic syndrome so needed to have this done. I wish you a healing recovery and any help or questions you need to ask feel free to ask me. we can help each other through this change. vicky x -

I am Really discouraged? My rheumatoid arthritis is flaring up so bad walking is killing me and I am starting to regret my choices. -
Get ready for my surgery

I bought those little bathroom cups and set up some that I would constantly refill with water to get me through the first couple weeks. Helped a ton to visualize that “ok, I’ve emptied 3 of them, one more won’t be so bad” instead of what seemed daunting in a big water bottle. Also, invest in good shoes. You’re worth the miles you’ll put on them and your feet with thank you! -
Not yet. I'm only 6 weeks out, but I was told to minimize carbs for now. I'm not a huge fan of rice, pasta, etc. I do prefer brown or wild rice to white rice, but most of the time, I would only eat rice with curry or other Indian food, which I haven't had yet anyway.

Congratulations!!! I am 25 and also a shortie haha I'm 5 feet even. I am 2 weeks post op today, and like you I feel well. No complications so far. My surgery weight was 264 ( in the beginning I was 274) and I am currently down to 245.I hope my journey is as good to me as it is to you.

Bariatric surgery and keto?
vikingbeast replied to deardarkling's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
My surgeon's plan was very low-carb but also low-fat. It wasn't working for me, and my weight loss slowed and then stalled. My new NUT and I put together a plan that was a little higher in carbs, and it worked—apparently my body needs carbs to prepare for working in the beet fields of the gulag or whatever. Added in about 100 calories of carbs a day (that's 25g, math people) and the weight loss resumed its 3-4 lbs. a week swoosh. Every body is different. -
Get ready for my surgery
vikingbeast replied to FootballMom92's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was ALL up in my feelings before surgery and just had to be reassured constantly. But here's the thing. The weight is going to come FLYING off you. The first few weeks are hard while you work off the fluids and gas and get used to the new way of things. But once you pee away the extra surgical fluids, you are in the serious honeymoon phase. I could step on the scale three times a day and have it be lower—and I started at a lower weight. Once you get used to it, you're going to notice so much energy. You won't be stuck in bed. You'll be up and about before you know it. I know you got this. You're gonna rock it. -
They pump you absolutely chock full of both fluids and surgical gas. As much as it hurts, walking will help dispel the gas. I had sleeve, not bypass, but all laparoscopic surgeries require gas to keep certain bits inflated and give the surgeon room to work. I lived on chewable Gas-X (simethicone tablets) for three days post-op, and then it just... stopped.

Long term diet after DS?
Arabesque replied to ClareLynn's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Many post op plans are pretty similar regardless of surgery. With my sleeve I had to follow 2 weeks liquids, 2 weeks purées (think sloppy no real chewing), 2 weeks soft (still pretty moist only a few chews needed) then slowly introduce more dense food as able. Certain foods were not allowed for a period of time & others not while I was losing. You may find you have to keep food pretty moist (think sauces, gravies, etc.) for a while. Your tummy can be pretty sensitive to begin too & foods you previously ate you can’t yet. Plus it’s not unusual for your sense of taste & smell to change temporarily. Some have trouble with things like eggs & chicken. It’s trial & error but don’t give up a food, just try it again later and if you need to stay at a stage longer that’s fine - we heal & recover differently. The best place to start is with the the list of allowed foods provided by your surgical team. They’ve been chosen so they don’t stress your healing & sensitive tummy & altered digestive system. You may still have issues with some or you may not. Raw fruit & vegetables, fruit skin, etc. are too coarse for your digestive system at first. The reason for no rice, bread, pasta is two fold. One to cut out processed empty calorie, low nutrition, starchy carbs from your diet while losing (many add these back in moderation in maintenance). And secondly because they swell & fill your much smaller tummy before you can get your protein in. Protein is key. Always protein first. Most eating plans while you’re losing are low fat, low carb, high protein. This is the time you also start exploring how you want to eat in the future. You try new ingredients, cooking styles, try alternative protein & nutritional sources. You’ll find you become very focussed on the nutritional value of what you eat. If you’re not sure about what you can eat & when have a conversation with your dietician. I saw my dietician every fortnight until about 4 months into maintenance then COVID hit but I could call her at any time I needed. We would discuss foods I had added to my diet, how I managed them & what I wanted to try next. She would sometimes suggest alternatives or suggest I wait or go slowly with some things. Good luck. -
The first day is the hardest. There is a lot of pain and things don't seem to settle well with your stomach. Take the pain meds as you need them to get through that discomfort. I went home after two days and used all the pain medication within the first two days after I was home (because I really didn't receive much). I told my doctor and had a refill of the medication. But by day three at home, the pain was tolerable. Make sure you are not gulping your liquids. I did that once - and I realized that I would never do that again. Take things slowly! I know you will want to rush things (at least I sure did), but I have learned that this is a sprint and that my body is healing while learning new habits. I don't want to have any further problems, so I am making sure that I don't rush the process. Keep us updated!

So guess what? After three weeks on the same pound the scale finally started to move again!! For me I think the trick was eliminating carbs to shock my system and drinking a lot. I also added a probiotic and stool softeners to get my digestive system back in order. Hoping I could ride this wave for a while now! Good luck to all of you!

235 lbs at the start of my 2 week liquid pre-op diet. 127 lbs at goal 7 months later. Am 3 yrs post op now and am 115.8 lbs this morning. P.S. I'm 5'2"

I had a 2-week liquid only diet, consisting of 4 Premier shakes, unlimited broth, sugar-free popsicles, caffeine-free sugar and tea. So, as you can see, surgeons differ radically in what they permit you to eat. 300 calories/day seems excessively low to me, though - you may want to confirm/clarify this with your surgical team.

Any October 2021 Surgeries?
Shrinkingvee replied to devotion's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi everyone, I’m in my 3rd week post op and very hormonal due a period and for the first time I’m experiencing real hunger, help! Has anyone else experienced the usual hormonal hunger that you had before op? I’ve lost 14lbs in total but not lost anything for 4 days. I’m on soft foods a week earlier as soups were going straight through me. I don’t know how to control this hunger when I can’t eat. -

Pre-Op Liquid Diet Woes
Pete-TheTimeIsNow replied to samjourney's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
I am one week into the liquid diet. My dr. allows: protein shakes, greek yougurt (sugar free, fat free), soup (chicken, non-starchy vegetables), but the soup has to be liquified (no solids / chunks).. sugar free popsicles, pudding / jello. Natural apple sauce and vegetable juice. I am doing between 600-800 cals/day. You should definitely talk to your medical team and ask them what else you can eat. -
Stalls are fun. NOT! The shocking with extra calories seems to work for me. If I hit a couple of weeks with no real loss, if I splurge on something, I drop like 5 the next week. I think it has something to do with Leptin levels, but I'm not a medical pro or a nutritionist so take that for what it's worth.

I had a two week liquid diet without a lean meal so I feel you!! I tracked mine in my fit pal because I was supposed to get 750-900 calories a day and I wasn't even clearing 500 with 3 shakes a day plus soup. After talking to my nutritionist, I started making my own shakes in the morning with unsweetened vanilla almond milk. Somedays it was almond milk, chocolate protein powder and PB2 powder. Other days it was almond milk, vanilla protein powder and frozen fruit. The almond milk really helped to bulk it up with some extra calories and it was super helpful. Some of this you DO just have to tough out. Your body is going WTF! Where's my goodies?!!! But you are stronger than that. If you do "mess up" just shake it off and move on. Don't fall into a guilt spiral. I'm really bad about that and then one little slip becomes the whole house on fire. You can do this!

I had a one week liquid diet before surgery where I could only have shakes/broth/water and I feel your pain ☹️ I would definitely contact your medical team to see if there’s anything you can have that will help. I was quite dizzy and out of it too by the end of it, and someone told me to just have some salt (what I did was lick my hand and sprinkle some like doing a tequila shot) and that did help the nausea and feeling like I was going to pass out any minute. But I really don’t know if that would be okay for you to try as some people need to be careful with salt! Take good care of yourself, drink plenty of water and rest! 🤗

Hi everyone! I am having surgery in exactly one week from today (Nov. 2) and I couldn't be more excited. However, I am one week in on my pre-op liquid diet and I am crashing... bad. I can't even stomach food anymore. I get approx. 300 calories a day from protein shakes, and even that leaves me nauseous. I feel super dizzy and exhausted all the time. I am so sick of broth and shakes! Any advice on new "liquid" foods to try? Or even how to manage this stage? So far I've had: broth, protein shakes/powder, skim milk, sugar-free jello, and baby food once (🤢). I know I will probably have to just tough it out, but it can't hurt to try to get some new meal ideas, right? 🤷♀️ I am going through this process completely alone, so if anyone is currently dealing with the same issues right now, I would love to hear about your experiences!

Any October 2021 Surgeries?
red_hatorade replied to devotion's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I was sleeved on October 13! I am 36/F living in Ohio. I have 2 kids, a soon to be 11 year old girl and a 4 year old boy. My high weight was when I was pregnant with my son, over 300 lbs. Starting weight was 288, got down to 271 before 2 week liquid diet, then got down to 253 day of surgery. I am almost 2 weeks post op and am down to 238.
