April 2022 Surgery Buddies
suzannethemom replied to Crinkles's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am also having surgery on APRIL 12th (sleeve procedure). We have similar body types. I am 5’4” with a starting weight of 223. I lost 12 pounds since my first visit on January 25th, so my surgeon approved only 10 days of the liquid diet (instead of the typical two weeks). Things are moving so fast for me and I’m so thankful. -
Now thinking if canceling surgery 🥺
Arabesque replied to Happy Stylist's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had my surgery almost three years ago & have three friend who’ve also had sleeve surgery in the last 2-4 yrs. They haven’t developed Gerd or the lesser reflux. I had mild reflux before my surgery but managed it successfully through my food & drink choices. I only had issues if I made bad choices like too much champagne or too many gin & tonics - the bubbles groan. Yes, I still have reflux though I experience different symptoms but again not that severe. I take a PPI every day now & for about 3 days out of 4 that’s enough. I get some burning in my throat late at night a couple of times a week but it’s not that bad. I would be included in that 30% stat even though I had it before, as many obese people do, & it’s still pretty mild. This is my experience. We’re all different & you can never predict how you will react to the surgery & the changes to your digestive system. I’m one of the 35% who developed gall stones but I could have developed them because of the weight loss, menopause or because I have Gilbert’s. If your existing reflux is severe enough to make you sick when you have an attack, my thought would be that you’re not a candidate for a sleeve. But that’s my opinion & I’m not a medical person. Do your research, ask questions. All surgeries have side effects & there’ll be pros & cons for all of the weight loss surgery options too. Remember, you have the right to ask for which ever surgery you think may be best for you. All the best. -
OMG! How did you manage to give up clothes shopping? What’s your secret? Did you go cold turkey or just slowly weaned yourself off? Or just couldn’t be bothered? Longest I’ve gone is three weeks which as last month. I did buy a new handbag but a bag shouldn’t count should it?? 😉

Post op gastric bypass anemic
fourmonthspreop replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Turns out they sold me the wrong vitamins. There was no iron in them. I've been on the new ones for about a week yet. I don't have rushing head syndrome anymore but still fatigued. They said it might take 3 weeks for my levels to go back to normal. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app -

My surgeon explained that a minority of people will have Gerd after surgery. He said that for the vast majority of those people, medicine alleviates it. He said there is a small percentage, I forget whether it was one or 3%, for whom the medicine does not work, and they need revision surgery. -

First time in over a week I've had any cravings. I think because it's because I realized, after the call from the hospital today, how close I am, and how I'm going to have to have to commit the long haul from here on out to cutting certain foods from my diet. I'm not even craving sweets (blame the protein drinks lol) but a nice bowl of buttery popcorn lol. Ugh. Carbs are my downfall. Always have been. -

I never got full after 5 bites unless it was a protein that was on the drier side. Also at only 5 weeks post op you may not have full sensitivity or recognize your full warning yet. Definitely eat a bit slower and measure everything. Good Luck ❤️ -
Agree 100%. I use a protein shake or protein powder and some frozen fruit (sometimes also spinach) and water. I use the Ninja Bullet blender and clean it right away with just hot water, so easy! And if you use frozen fruit it's easier and cheaper than fresh fruit - and certainly much cheaper than the ones you order. It takes me about 3 minutes to make one, and thirty seconds to clean up.

Read this article! It helped me. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4579881/ It goes into depth about rates of GERD post gastric sleeve. In many cases, it actually reduces GERD. It is rare that GERD develops if you don't already have it. And the rate of GERD after 3 years is very low. Lower than your risk by just being an obese person. I read those horror stories and then did some looking into the actual research. This is a metanalysis of many studies, not just one study. The one quoted recently in the forums has a sample size of 16 people. -
they can happen, yes, but if the risks were that high, we'd see a lot more postings about it on bariatric forums. I've been on this and other forums for over seven years, and we do see an occasional post, but not that many. I think that stat he gave you sounds a bit suspicious. (Actually, I just now did a quick google search. Here is a peer reviewed study that also says 4.6% - same as what someone above said) https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24234733/ also - PPI's. It's common for surgeons to have their patients on them for 3-6 months after surgery while they're healing. But after that? No. Unless people have GERD or something, which is rare with RNY. avoiding ulcers is the reason they've told RNY patients for years to avoid taking NSAIDS - and recently I've heard of more sleeve patients being told to avoid NSAIDs as well. honestly, I'm not sure where he's getting these numbers.

I had to wait 8 months to get my surgery, It seemed so long but I wasn't give a date until 6 weeks before the event. Its out of your control so you just have to do what you can to get by. I found this forum and in my free time , I picked a date in the last 20 years and started reading the posts from then on. I gained so much knowledge, it gave me confidence. I researched menus for all the stages and prepared my home for the things I would need, which wasnt much. It will soon pass..

My surgery was on the 1st. I returned to work (part time light janitorial) this past Monday and feel great! The complication I had ended up being just a small bump in the road to recovery. I've lost about 10 pounds so far. In a few days I get to start soft foods that have more texture to them, so stuff like a soft taco with ground beef and cheese. I'll be on that phase for 6 weeks. Hi, PB&J! Dr. Cronk did my sister's gastric bypass surgery 3 years ago this July and he did an amazing job! They are both very experienced plus since it's the robotic laparoscopic bypass it's a fast recovery and not much pain at all. We are both very happy that we did the bypass. Hope this helps to put you at ease a bit! -

Other reasons for surgery

I just had a bypass done 3 weeks ago. So, I'm new, but I am not in the bathroom a lot. I have 2 bm's a day. I had problems with constipation right after surgery, but since then no issues. I haven't had to run to make it either. So, pretty normal. -

Hi PB&J, I had my one week post-op appointment today. I don’t even feel like I had a surgery. I’m a little bit tired, but that’s all. I think they do many, many surgeries and have plenty of experience. I’m sorry for your disappointment regarding the sleeve, but it’s much better to know that it’s not a good option. I had the sleeve and ended up with the upper chest pain of GERD without actually having reflux. This surgery was a revision to bypass. One surgery is better than two, lol. -

Same day for me! I'm having the sleeve done. I got my blood work, EKG and chest X-rays done last week. My vitamin D is low and iron so I have a prescription for the vitamin D and prenatal vitamin for the iron. My PCP has signed off and now I just have to wait. To be honest, the nerve wracking part for me was making sure all those steps were completed and now that they are, I feel less anxious. Just take one day at a time! My surgery was supposed to be tomorrow. My 2 week modified-liquid went great. I was down the 25 pounds my surgeon wanted. I took the required Covid test yesterday and failed! I'm feeling fine, just a minor cold, but the surgery has been put off until June 21. I'm completely devastated. Very sad not to be joining the rest of you March surgery buddies. I'm not sure what the next 90+ days will bring. -

At least yours will be gone. I was due to be on mine and I skipped the white pills on my bc to try and keep it away but had never tried that so I was worried the whole time that it was going to start all the way up to surgery day. And afterwards too really. It never did thankfully but I would’ve much rather just had it the week before and been done with it. -
Vegetarian meat substitutes
fourmonthspreop replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I dont think it'll be hard at all. I'm tolerating pea and soy protein well. Here's how I'm getting over 80 grams of protein a day in soft foods: Breakfast: Siggis simple ingredients protein yogurt (15 grams) Lunch: yellow squash and 3.5 oz of impossible meat made into a meatball (16 grams) Dinner: 2 oz of refried beans, 1 tbspn of sour cream (4 grams) Snacks: thin slice of Provolone cheese (3 grams) and the big Kahuna, a protein shake made with 2 scoops of isopure and almond milk (use soy for extra protein). (50 grams) ...total for the day= 88 grams of plant based proteins! You can switch this up too. Do an omelet, scrambled eggs, tofu scramble, stir fry tofu and other low carb vegetarian meat subs. I was scared at first to try vegetarian meat substitutes but as long as theyre not super breaded and you chew them really well, they seem to be working. My dietician approved of them too! Everyone tolerates food differently after surgery but so far so good. Best of luck. I did my gastric bypass a month ago and I still will not go back to eating meat ever again. One of my favourite seafoods, and very soft and easy to digest even 7 weeks out is langoustine, although there are many words for it. It's softer than shrimp/prawn and less meaty than lobster and in my opinion tastes better than both. This .. -
