  1. Started out at 138 lost 10 lbs during preop phase. Weighed 227 day of surgery and now weigh 173 lbs. Lost 54 lBS since surgery on November 17th. My last progress pic was about 2 months ago so I'm a little smaller now. My kids are very proud of me and my daughter (15 yrs old) has been a little inspired and is also trying to eat healthier as she is like me with slower metabolism and gains weight easily, while my husband and son(18yrs old) can eat anything and remain skinny. My husband still buys me chocolates and my son throws them away and reminds him of how far I've come. They try to be as supportive as possible, I'm lucky in that aspect. My happiest moment was being in old navy with my son trying on a size 14 and after being an 18/20 and the 14 was too big so my son suggested a size 12. I was nervous and after trying them on and showing my son he asked me if I was crying. It was an emotional moment for me. My weight loss has been slow as I hit a stall for several weeks now but im trying not to lose moral and take it one day at a time and look at the positive rather than the negative. Any advice on this stall is so welcome
  2. I got my fourth fill (half cc) on Thursday (5/6/10) and they had me drink some Water right after. All was fine went down, no problem. So I go home and have some Soup (based on what the nut said, I could have soup as part of my full liquids for 24 hrs) After the 3rd spoon...I was stuck...on soup. I tried to just wait it out...you know, the sliming, and strange little contractions your stomach does to get the food to go one way or the other. But after 2 hours and it never going down, I allowed it to come back up. After that, stayed on liquids, everything was fine. Then went to mushies...had fat free baked Beans. They are soft...basically dissolve in your mouth. Got stuck after 6 beans! I have been on liquids since, but the problem is that I can go for awhile just sipping water or fat free milk, but if I go for too long just swallowing saliva, I'll get a minor stuck feeling - can't get any fluids down - until I spit up the stuff in my pouch. Which is usually just foamy saliva. What's going on? Should I be a trooper and hope that my swelling will go down? At what point do you give up and call the doc for an unfill? I realy don't want to do that again. For 2 months prior to this fill, I gained 4 pounds. UGH!

    It's time

@@Staples87 Congratulations on taking the steps to get healthy. You are very young and have you're whole life ahead of you. I too was a teen Mom, married with two kids by the time I was 19. All the responsibility without the time to enjoy childhood ourselves. I wish the very best for you and your family and I am glad you have chosen to do something now while you are so young and have not caused a lot of damage to your body yet. Staying heavy for too long really is very damaging. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress. Which surgery are you moving forward with?
  4. Hi! I'm new here! I had my surgery on 12/12/12. The first week I dropped 19 pounds...but for some reason I haven't lost anything since then. I'm getting worried!!

    Anyone not tell family?

My husband and I JUST started this process last night at orientation, though it's been on our mind's to do for a couple of years now. Actually started it last year but stopped, thinking we could just change our cooking/eating/exersizing habits. HA, ya right. Anyway, we have 3 kids, a 17 yr old son and 10 yr old twins that we haven't told yet and we won't be saying anything to any family members, unless they ask. We don't want them to worry, or keep asking us how we are doing (have you lost any weight? why not? etc...), too much pressure on us, plus, some people think it's "cheating" and judge. I already get that by a few people if I bring up our necessity for our IVF with our twins (I have PCOS). So that's the plan anyway- to not say anything. But I'm a blabbermouth so who knows. LOL!

    Wish me luck....

thanks Becky - truth is thats MY goal - when I started this journey I couldn't imagine getting below 150, so thats what I set it at. But to be in the "normal" bmi range I need to be at 140. I dont' care if I ever get to 140 or not. I'm with you I just want to look in the mirror and say "hey, not bad for a gramma!" I'm in a size 10, I hope after my tt I will get into a size 8 - and thats it - if I'm in a size 8 I'd be tickled pink! Well let me rephrase that - if I'm in a size 8 and I have a flat tummy - I'd be tickled pink!

    No Kids Yet

This is crazy, I know but when I was around 26 I had already had two children and got very close to goal weight (not that I kept it off mind you) but I decided that I was going to get a tummy tuck and lipo. I went to a great Surgeon and was thrilled with the results. Fast forward 10 years and guess what? We are having a third child. I was thinking that I would End up with the worst stretch marks. But I didn't get a single one and my tummy is still tight and hard. Weird I know. Would have never guessed that one. I did gain 70lbs after the third pregnancy and have fought my weight but my tummy is stll great. The only problem is that if you do gain weight after tt or lipo it will come back in a different part of your body. Too bad doctors don't tell people that. Anyways, having said that I have stretchy skin. Never have had a stretch mark. Some people gat them some people dont. Keep researching and looking into what's best for you. It sounds like your on the right track. Best wishes

    It's breaking me

Get rid of all of the easy foods. I find that I can really eat bunches of the following: potato chips, tortilla chips, chex snack mix, Cookies of any type, candy of any type (especially Reese's Cups), cakes, crackers, ice cream, milk shakes, and ALL OTHER TYPES OF JUNK FOODS. I can really pack in the bad stuff. I also find that salads full of slippery, fatterning dressings slide down very easily. But let me eat chicken, or beef, or something healthy and I can only eat 5 to 10 small bites and I feel like I am going to bust. When I am having trouble, I also sometimes resort to drinking low carb slim fast 4 times per day and eating one very small meal of chicken and green Beans. This works well for me.

    It's breaking me

Thanks Heather (and everyone else) for the support, I was having a pretty bad few days when I posted that and have been feeling better recently. I know it's a step by step process but somedays it just makes me want to cry, scream throw a tantrum, you know hehe. I had my last fill on Thurs June 12 and go for my next one on July 10 hopefully that one I will be able to get a bit more of an agressive fill. I am probably at about 6.6 or 6.8 or around that in an I'm not sure how big but I am guessing 10cc MIDband (I am not sure how much because my doc has never given me a straight answer on that total cc amount). I do need more restriction that is for sure. After this next appointment July 10 I am going to book the next one a lot sooner. I have to take 4hrs off work to drive out and back so I don't want to go too frequently if I can avoid.
  10. I am two weeks out from a crazy lot of surgery: Corset Abdominaplasty (a kind of tummy tuck), lower body lift and silicone breast implants. Today is my first day back at work and I'm feeling great, but still a little sore. I was really worried about being able to be back to work in two weeks, but it was no problem (office job) -- I probably could have been back last Wednesday after the drains came out. I'm thrilled with the results in my tummy and breasts, but still waiting to see how the lower body lift works out after the swelling goes down more. I'm happy to answer any questions about the surgery or recovery. I've noticed that most posts are from people getting single procedures, so I thought there might be some interest in what it's like to have several at once. Some info: - I was banded in february 2007 and lost a little over 100 lbs -- currently just inside the "normal" range for my height. - The surgery took 5-6 hours and I spent two nights in the hospital - I had four drains that were removed 9 days post-op (could have been done 7 days, but the holidays got in the way). - I was on Morphine for two days in the hospital, percocet for 3 days at home, then switched to nucyntra (narcotic without the side effects) for another few days. At about 10 days out, I switched to advil and I'm still taking them, but can skip the one in the middle of the night without too much problem. - It took me two days to be able to walk around and five days until I could walk a mile (slowly) on the treadmill. I'm going to start walking daily on the treadmill today (increasing speed and incline over time) until my doctor gives the go-ahead to get back to spinning and weight lifting. Happy to answer any questions!

    Well- definitely NOT covered

@@LisaMergs I am right there with you and let me tell you, when that weight comes off and you realize that all that loose skin is pulling on your body, plastics is a must. At least for me it is. I started with a 5950.00 Brachioplasty and I just took a 19 week project to cover the cost of my Abdominalplasty and breast lift with augmentation. That surgery is going to cost around 18K total..... I started my new project yesterday and I swear as every hour goes by I have a secret smile on my face knowing that I just paid for part of my surgery. I think it stinks that insurance does not cover any of it. For Peres sake, obesity is a metabolic disease. And guess what, it is a disease that can and will end your life early. Why then is reconstruction not covered? I just simply don't agree with that. As I sit here all trussed up in my spanx that hold my tummy in....... It is BS and it needs to change. Just my two cents......

    April 10th 2017

I'm doing really well today. My weightloss seems to be zipping along. I'm not sure what's normal for most people at this stage though. Once I figured about the super tiny sip thing, I've had no pain. It's still annoying to have to be sipping, honestly, every 5 minutes to get my 64 oz water and two 11 oz protein shakes in. I've been walking ~1 mile every day, but in honor of Earth Day, my best friend and I went for a little 3-mile hike at a nearby national park. It went really well; today was definitely the first day since surgery that I feel like myself. I did take a 3.5 hour nap (sleep?) in the afternoon because I was a little tired after the hike and grocery shopping. I'm all for a support group on here for fellow April 10-ers! I advance to full liquids Monday. I feel anxious about it. Food feels VERY MUCH like the enemy to me. And having zero hunger feels like my (unwillingly) fat girl Heaven. My plan is to simply acknowledge my anxiety about having to eat again and follow exactly the plan given to me by the nutritionist. I bought plain fat free kiefer and two Trader Joe's soups today in preparation for full liquids.

    Fanny Moves to Phase Two

Yay Fanny I'm so glad to get online and see you've been to see our genius Dr and have a plan of attack, so to speak! I was just under 3kg from goal when I had my first consult, and at goal when I had the torso lift and I'm glad of it because now I'm 7kgs under goal and my skin is still really tight as a result of the op. Those last 15kgs will be gone by Dec for sure, and you'll be good to go. Also I saw Dr A 7 weeks after my op to ask about getting lipo for my mons area, which still seemed puffy to me. Dr A convinced me to wait 6 months before deciding to do it, and I'm glad he did because the 'puffiness' is just about completely gone and it looks completely normal now. On that note, perhaps in his wisdom, he figures that in a couple of years, you too will be accustomed to your perky new D cups and will be happy as larry! Lol! I'm sure you're going to be so happy with it all, matey. I am now almost 10 weeks post surgery and am incredibly happy I did it! Jacqui, I too heard that botox can help with a 'popply' chin. I have completely lost my double chin with the wieght loss but the skin under there is a little more loose than I would prefer, and would be interested in seeing if botox would help. I might have to make some calls to make some enquiries into that.

    Sleeve Myths or Reality?

The other rule is no drinking with meals. There are lots of post on that topic. Drinking at least 10 minutes before meals and you'll feel full faster. If you eat with your meal., you will wash your food out of your stomach and experience hunger shortly thereafter.. then you'll eat more, there by adding calories and eventually stop your weight loss and even go to weight gain. Many surgeons and NUTS give varying advice bot most are consistent with following a high protein and low carb way of eating for life. Low sugar often relates to low junk food, sweets, desserts which of course will add to weight gain. Protein helps weight loss ( I forget why but I'm pretty sure it helps ). There are usually reasons for the guidelines. ONce you reach your goal weight you eating lifestyle will be what works for you. Be sure its still a healthy way of eating or you will gain weight and that is not a sleeve myth.. that is a sleeve fact. Good Luck with your journey.

    Driving after a LBL

I was driving about 10 days post LBL (to/from work & running errands), but I can't imagine an 8 hour drive that early on. Talk to your surgeon!
  16. Omg lipstick you are hilarious! Unfortunately, I usually do not have someone around to annoy except my little dog! He is annoyed because he loved sitting on my boob shelf and now that my upper tummy that held it up is gone he has to settle for my lap! On the other hand, I now HAVE a lap. I totally get on the scale every day and analyze my weight, as well as after occasional "movements". I have been trying to figure out how to take my selfie next to random chubbier strangers to compare our sizes, but am afraid I would be arrested... My daughter is 16 and totally obsessed with herself and her own life, when I try to get compliments out of her it takes WWWAAAYYYY too much effort. My son is 19 and out of town playing ice hockey for the season, so hopefully can get some good feedback and annoying moments out of him!

    3 Week Post Op

I'm also feeling a bit that way.... I am 15 days post op and on clear liquids, so I'm not even eating anything and as of today I am down 17 pounds. I'm down a total of 34pounds (including the 10 day liquid diet before surgery). I'm chosing to stay positive and be thankful that I am most importantly losing! Good luck to you and I hope it starts to melt off of you!!!

    Ni I'm a newbie

Hi Liz, I too am a newbie to this. I watched the seminar on my laptop...lol...4 times!!! My sis had gastric bypass...which is not my thing, so I am vaguely familiar with how it goes. Banding is more my speed. Not to mention, the weight loss is longer -which is better for me. I too have three kids, daughter will be 19 in Oct, son will be 17 in Aug, and little daughter is 9..they are very supportive. Hubby is a little scared I think...funny he isn't the one going under the knife...lol. i can't wait for this to be over I am so excited! I go to the doc on tuesday to get my sleep apnea results, if no apnea, I can schedule the surgery right away, if I do have apnea, i have to get fitted and wear the cpac for 2 weeks prior to surgery. Other than that, I have had all my tests done and my general practicioner has given her blessing. I have been working on it since May and finally its near the time to schedule the surgery. I can't wait to feel good again and get back to the old me!!

    advice

I have Blue Shield/Blue Cross. My appt was kind of a mess. The front office mixed up my paperwork, this made the Dr. fustrated. He was nice to me but rude to the PA. He was hurried, rushed with his answers, stressed yet still trying to be nice to me. His pictures looked great, and I like the answers to my questions but did not get the warm fuzzy feeling I have read on other post. I am scheduled for surgery 11-10-11. My birthday is 5 days later. A flat tummy what a wonderful gift to me! I asked how this surgery would compare to the Breast Reduction I got last year. He said it is a much tougher surgery, more painfull, and longer recovery. This scared me very much as I had a real slow painful recovery. 2 mos of the worst pain ever, 3 mos sleeping in a recliner, 6 mos of pain, depression wonderring why I would do this to myself. It has been a year and a half, and I have slight numbness on the side of breast and sensitive nipples, not a big deal at all. I am very happy with the results, so the pain was worth it. I have fibromyalgia so I have over active pain nerves causing everything to be much more painful, and I was told my recovery time is about twice as long. Thanks for your post

    Ugh! Weight gain!

I'm one month tomorrow. About 10 days ago I stepped in the scale and had gained 2 pounds. A couple days later I was up another. Then for a week + was up and down a half. Finally today I'm back down those three. Just be patient and follow your plan and it will work. Now to lose 6 pounds to reach my target of 235 by my niece's graduation next Friday ????
  22. The pain is intense whenever I move, not gonna lie. I have ice on my side and crotch right now. And yesterday after surgery I had to go to the ER because of extreme bleeding from my rear incision. Fortunately my doctor met me there, checked everything, and assured me it was normal to have leakage especially in the first few days even though I have drains. It has subsided since then but is not completely done. But I had my binder off for the first time and I cried with joy at the sight of my flat stomach and the fact that I could see my hooha without lifting up a pile of fat or skin. I will take the pain for a lifetime of flat tummy any day! Time for my meds! Sent from my XT1635-01 using BariatricPal mobile app
  23. Hi all, I'm new here and would really appreciate advice! I had the Lap-Band back in 2003. I started out at 515lbs and my surgeon set a goal weight of 350 (expected weight loss for Lap-Band tends to be lower, but the surgery was the right choice for me because I was only 21 when I had it). Anyway, I got down to 295, which I maintained for about 10 years. Most recently I started losing again through food planning and exercise and am now at 279. Lately I am really frustrated by all the sagging skin. It isn't causing infections or major mobility issues (thankfully), but I would really like to experience how my body moves (and looks) with less of the excess. I know some guidelines say a WLS should consider PS after they've lost 40% of their body weight or 100lbs. I've lost 46% of my full body weight, and 236lbs. The issue is that, because my original goal was so high, I have no idea what my target weight would be to make me a candidate for PS. I'm mostly interested in a breast lift w small implant, removal of excess arm skin (which is a lot!). I'd also like a LBL or TT down the line, but there's still a good amount of belly fat, so I don't know if that would be an option for me. I should say that the most beautiful part of this lap band journey for me has been letting go of the idea of ever being thin. I'm 6 feet tall and have a large skeletal frame, and I actually really like my body shape-- I'm just not a huge fan of all the sagging skin. For that reason, I don't really want to have to reach what the CDC recommends as a "healthy" weight for me (which is 136-184lbs) in order to get rid of the extra skin. I don't know that my body will ever reach that range, and I don't really feel like I need it to. I just want to be able to enjoy my body to the fullest now. Has anyone with a very high starting weight had PS while in the 250lb weight range? And do you know of good surgeons in the NY, Philadelphia, or DC areas who are good with high BMI patients? Any insights welcome! Many Thanks! Hope you're all having a great weekend! J'amile
  24. The stats tend to say the average weight loss after about 5 years is about 65% of the weight you have to lose to put yourself in the healthy BMI range. Some lose more. Some lose less. Some keep it off. Some don’t & happily settle at a higher weight. This can be from choice, genetics, lifestyle, complacency, health, etc. For example it’s not uncommon for people to experience a 10-20lb bounce back regain around year 3. I think some surgeons give the average expected weight loss to keep expectations realistic. Mine didn’t but he asked me what weight I’d like to reach. I said 60kg because that was the lowest weight I’d reached the many, many times I’d lost weight in the past & it gave me a bmi of about 23. He said it was a realistic goal. I exceeded it (135% of the weight I had to lose). My lowest weight was 48.2. For about 14 months I’ve been about 49kg but I waver between 48.5 & 49.5. But I’m close to that 3yr mark & you never know what the future will bring so I try to be realistic about that. The average is probably a good goal but no one says you can’t exceed it & set new goals if you want & if you can can without undue restrictions & limitations on your life. Even though we’re guilty of regularly checking that scale & we know all our stats, ultimately, it’s not about the number on that scale. It’s about you being happy & healthy & enjoying your life.
  25. 100% agree with @Jaelzion. I had tried many diets & eating programs & lost hundreds of kgs. I’ve run, walked, swam, biked 1000s of km. The 60-75kg weight fluctuation I’d struggled & fought to maintain for decades suddenly became 91kgs & I could not shift a single kg. I could see what was ahead of me & it wasn’t good physiologically or psychologically. The 31kg (67lbs) I needed to lose was a lot on my short & smaller framed body & more of a challenging given I was 54 & menopausal. That I lost 42kg (92lbs) has been a blessing & I’m thankful every day. And yes it was worth the $10 000 out of pocket cost (Australian health insurance is pretty crappy.) But I can understand your feelings this close post surgery. It’s all very scary & many question their decision the first couple of weeks. Hopefully, as the weeks pass you’ll feel more positive & confident about your surgery & what you’ll achieve. All the best.
