IrishKatieKat replied to CeeIvy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sugar free Popsicles were my go to. Also.gwr some Chicken/ Beef Broth. Once you can do full liquids Oikos Triple Zero Yogurt tastes amazing and is 15g of protein. Best of luck! -
Ok so # 1 relax. Everyone is different , and although surgeons usually give you a schedule to follow post op, some people do things a little differently. I do not think it will hurt you to try and eat some mushies if you feel like you can handle it. However I would be careful on the things you are choosing. Gravy is high in fat and very heavy which is probably not a good choice. I started mushies about a week out, but I ate things like cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, yogurt. I would try things like that, stay away from high calorie things such as gravy, they will not help you calorie wise. Good luck to you , keep us posted!

yes same here. I have a friend here in town that had her surgery five years ago and she was telling me she still has trouble with meat. The doctor told her it is because it is such high protien and sits in our pouchs so heavy it feels awful. She still goes back to her cottage cheese and yogurts and liquids just to get those feelings out of her pouch. I haven't been eating great not getting in my calories and oh lord i am horrible at my Vitamins, I hate taking pills so it is hard for me to remember these dang things.

At 6 weeks I could advance my diet as tolerated. That means right off the plate. I stayed pretty soft. Chewed stuff to mashed potato consistency. I ate lentils. I preferred savory to sweet. I ate a lot of mashed beans. You can thin anything with chicken stock. Lol. Some things I just couldn't eat for 6 months. It's a lot of trial and error you build in around your mainstays. I ate cottage cheese with salsa. Beans. Yogurt. Moist meat. Cook your meat in broth/sauce. Ground meat and raw veggies were hard to digest until 6 months. HTH. If you're hungry, eat! Just stop eating when you first notice it at your breastbone. This is truly your very personal connection to the journey.

Am I eating too much?
Shrinking Sue replied to Gomez's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Gomez. I had surgery on 1/27 and I am in the middle of my 2 week "full liquid" phase. I also get to eat cream soups, yogurt, sugar free pudding etc. I was also told to eat 3 liquid "meals" a day plus 3 protein shakes. It seems like a lot to me, but my dr gave me a very detailed list. As long as you are following the DRs oders, I am sure you will be fine. Good luck. -
How is it going ladies? Holding here, but need to kick things in a high gear. Don't know if I'm not getting enough Protein or if this is a matter that I'm older an it's not going to come off as easy. My snacking if there is any is almonds or yogurt for the most part. I was am to go back down in a pants size. Can't get into all my 10's but it's a start. I'm trying to keep notes of the physical changes I see and the weight is coming off also. Right now it's in my stomach the most. It's going to be a great Spring day here! Hope the weather is nice there.

My doctor had me 1 week liquids and 1 week mushy. On my mushy phase I had cream of wheat, greek yogurt smoothies, mashed potatoes, apple sauce, puree butternut squash, carrots and my favorite of all split pea soup.

I am 5 weeks out and discouraged that I can consume so much in one sitting. In an hour and a half car drive I drank a 9 ounces protein drink followed by a yoplait light yogurt. 30 minutes later I had what felt like constipation (sweating, nausea). I slept for 2 hours and woke up with a headache, dizziness and nausea. Maybe Im dyhydrated.

Have you tried unflavored protein powder? You can add it to most anything liquid or even mushy...soups, mashed potatoes, refried beans, yogurt, chicken salad, hummus, etc. to try and up your protein intake. I've been using it pre and post op so I've never had to completely rely on shakes for my protein. Unjury also makes a high protein cheese sauce that I put in soups (chicken, mushroom, tortilla) that is pretty yummy. You could also pour it on top of soft veggies if you are allowed them at this stage.

You are so lucky your doc lets you eat soup, pudding and yogurt at 10 days! I could only have liquids until 21 days. I am now on soft foods, but soup and pudding were definitely not recommended. It is just grand being able to at least eat some things, though! Good luck and try to follow your doc's instructions.....

Finally found a better tasting replacement for those carnation drinks!
labradormom21 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
While it does have a little sugar, at this point I don't care lol! I'm able to get one down in a 30 minute period and it stays down without causing my stomach to feel like absolute crap! Those with dairy issues will absolutely have a problem with these, but I love them! I even got vanilla ones to make smoothies with. I got sleeved on the 9th of March (: http://www.stonyfield.com/products/yogurt/op/strawberry Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Hardly eating
Torriluv87 replied to Drzthickness85's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok first off congratulations on your surgery! I had the runs for a bit too. It got a bit better once solids came into the picture. I was lactose intolerant before surgery and its not any better but what i found that helped was leaving it out. I can still consume small amounts but I'll still get sick if i consume small amounts over several days. It builds up into this huge horrible bathroom nightmare. Or LITERALLY one Greek yogurt will send me spiraling into horrible cramps and diarrea. Any time that happened i knew id have to lay off the dairy. I substituted with soy or almond milk. I'd get unsweetened soy milk. It has 7g of protein per 8oz i believe. Almond milk tastes a bit better but only has 1g for the same amount. I'd heard of nut milks with 10g of protein but i haven't looked for them. Also try a vegan protein powder. I think Unjury is vegan? Correct me if I'm wrong. I had the chocolate one given to me and it was like drinking a chocolate yoohoo. Definitely leave the dairy alone. Ive been doing fine on almost none. Give your body a few days to come around. If your THAT lactose intolerant it'll take a few days maybe for your system to get back to normal (i only say that cause any time things like you explained happened to me, it was from dairy and took about a good week or 2 for me to feel normal again). But it'll only happen if you eliminate the dairy. I am only speaking from experience. But also check in with your surgeon. It sounds like your having a rough time. I feel for you hon. I hope things get better soon. Thing is it isn't nausea. It is a PB (productive burp) that sometimes turns into full scale vomiting, although not often. I am worried what the signs are of a lapband slipping. Yogurt doesn't even go down - too thick.

when i would travel, I would order soups at restaurants, pudding, yogurts, anything thak would be soothing. My stomach really preferred soups though. It also helped with fighting dehydrations.

I've been trying to implement change in my life. It hasn't been easy. My sub-conscious isn't going down without a fight! It's been really hard to fight the urge for carbs, but I took a huge step today by eliminating most of them from my cabinets. I did some shopping over the weekend and again, it was really hard to fight the carb monster. Oh, my favorite macaroons are fresh out of the oven? NO! RESIST! Free sample of my favorite pizza? STOP!! GET AWAY FROM ME!! Toaster Strudel on sale!? YOU BASTIDS! And then it was like a light bulb went off (dimly, still working on it), and I realized that Toaster Strudel is probably a great representation of my overall diet choices. Easy, sweet, reminiscent of fruit (but not actual fruit) and comes with an icing packet so I can feel like I contributed to my meal prep. How terribly sad and ridiculous is it to live like that?? So, instead I've been implementing some changes. I've been trying out protein shakes as meal replacements, and so far it's going great. I've been enjoying Muscle Milk, vanilla creme and chocolate are all I've tried, and playing around with flavors. I have some sugar-free chai mix, some extracts and sugar-free syrups that have made it a little more fun. I've been using the ready-to-drink variety of muscle milk and am nervous about buying the big canister. Does it taste the same? Anyone know about this? Also, I've discovered Greek yogurt. Never used to be a yogurt fan, but never tried Greek yogurt since it became "the thing". "If I don't like the regular kind, why would I want the Greek kind?" I'd rationalize to myself like an idiot. It's amazing! I really like Fage the best, but have been settling for Oikos because it's been on sale for the last 2 weeks at my local store. Of all I tried, Fage peach is my hands down favorite. So I've been replacing a meal with yogurt. Well, not the WHOLE meal. I used to buy lunch at the cafeteria at my work, which is usually some double portion carb mess covered in gravy, or a super salty soup with pre-made caesar salad on the side and a big sugary lemonade. Now, I bring a yogurt, some cheese slices and have bottled water instead of the lemonade. I'll get a soup or fresh fruit from the caf if I'm hungry, but I'm usually not. All the extra protein is really making a difference in my appetite! So that brings us to the point in my day once I'm home. I live alone. I have no one to shame me or call me out for making bad choices. That's part of why I'm glad to purge my cabinets. I'll have to use all my willpower not to re-purchase those things, but not having them here is a huge step. When I'm home and ready for dinner, I have a Lean Cuisine. Not the best, but it's portion controlled and easy. Living alone=having all the chores and cooking and cleaning is not how I want to spend my time... half way through cooking the meal, my back will start to ache. Then by the time I'm done and have sat down, ate, food coma sets in, cleaning up is the last thing on my mind. I'm really hoping that losing some weight will give me energy back to DO CHORES. I feel like I'm so gung-ho about changing my diet, that part has been easy, actually, but I have no drive whatsoever to be physically active. I really want that to change. But it's such a short amount of time before my back aches or my feet ache or I'm sweating and feel disgusting... Can't want for all these changes to add up to a better life. I just re-read this and realized my goal for physical fitness is to be able to do chores! HAHHAHHAHA - not climb a mountain, run a 5k - but do some chores. I can't tell if that's very sad or very Marge Simpson of me. lol!!

I'm not allowed to eat applesauce until the third week post op. I tried to put it in yogurt but just couldn't get it down. I made the mistake of just trying to swallow them last night. Big mistake. I think one got stuck and I've got some pain and discomfort. I don't know how some of you did it with just swallowing them whole. I'm not going to take anything until I talk to the office tomorrow.

Ummmmm.....is this normal?
MIZ60 replied to Emersyn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you have lactose issues related to the IBS then any shakes made with milk products are going to be hard to take. Maybe consider a vegan shake or using alternative milks like soy, almond or coconut. My program does not allow any pudding or baby food on full liquids but plain, non fat yogurt 1 oz/hr is allowed. If you are having diarrhea every morning it doesn't sound like constipation and Miralax is only going to suck more water in there. Bone broth is pretty good and has some protein. Since the sleeve doesn't involve anything except making your stomach smaller any foods that you could not tolerate preop due to you IBS are still going to be problematic. You really should get in touch with the nutritionist or other provider that did your preparation for surgery, Don't wait until you feel weak and dehydrated. Sorry you are having such a rough time of it. -
I just got some. I haven't had time to make some yogurt though to eat it with. Any other ideas how to incorporate it? By the way...the PB2 snack crackers are SUPER delicious. They could be my new sweet tooth treat so that I don't go for other things I shouldn't eat.

I am afraid of failure. I'm afraid that with my PCOS and insulin resistance, I won't lose very much weight. I'm afraid it will all come back, plus more, like it always has in the past. I'm afraid of losing too much hair! (That's number one for me). But I got banded yesterday and I think it will be worth it. I feel like I've been kicked by a horse, though. Three weeks of Soup, Jell-O, and yogurt, here I come.
-
Soup goes right through the band. That is why you can eat so much. Once you start eating solid protien, your hunger pangs will be greatly lessened. When I was on cream soups, I put unflavored protein powder in my soup. It seemed to help a little. Once you start on mushies it will be easier. I had egg drop soup then and the protein was so nice. Plus I was able to eat yogurt and cottage cheese. Shaved turkey was also on my list. Just hang tough. You can do it!! You should be getting your first fill in 2 -4 weeks as well. then it will get a lot easier to stay satisfied.

Some Questions-1 Week Post Gastric Sleeve Surgery
EmSchrams posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey everyone! I was sleeved last Wednesday, December 7th, and while reading these boards I have gotten a bit worried. Everyone seems to have been on full liquids right after surgery, and while I was until Saturday, my doctor told me to move on to the mushies. Right now puréed Soup, Protein shakes, and Greek yogurt work for me best, but I was able to have some puréed lentils and black Beans and some very very mushy mashed potatoes. Is this normal so soon? I mean my surgeon gave the ok, but I was never told liquids for 2 weeks after, and it seems the norm on these boards. I also seem to be easily eating 1/2 cup of those things... I live in NYC and walk everywhere and so I am already walking 2 miles a day so perhaps I am just burning everything? Also, my multi Vitamin has always made me a bit queasy, even when I was trying different brands before surgery, but tonight I actually spent 15 minutes throwing it up... Any advice for those? Thank you all for reading...I want to make sure this works, so I just want to make sure I am making the most of it!! -
Are you eating yogurt and still getting yeast infections? Are you sure they are yeast infections?
-
This is my first post so go easy on me. ;-} I was banded on Dec 14th and I had my 1st fill on January 4th of 3 cc's, another on February 5th of 2cc's and the 3rd fill on the 5th of March of 1.5 cc's (total of 6.5cc's no I do not know what size my band is but felt like I was truly restricted for the first time) and everything seemed to be fine. I was back on liquids for 2 days, then soft foods for 1, and finally had my first meal Friday night. I ate my 3 oz of turkey and about a 1/4 cup of green Beans and felt satisfied so I stopped there. I was finally feeling like I might be where I needed to be. I got up Saturday and had my hot drink with my Mucinex and as happened since the fill I felt a little tightness when swallowing first thing in the morning but after an hour or so that went away unless I took too big of a bite or swallow then I would have that tightness again. I had my protien drink which went down fine but because it was a little later than usual I did not eat lunch and was going to do an early dinner and a protien drink later (my husband works nights so we are up late and I would have had time to have it long before going to bed.) I finished my protien drink around 1:00pm and made my dinner (again with turkey and vegetables) at 5:30pm. I ate about 8 bites of the turkey, all smaller than a dime, but right away I started to feel that tight feeling in my throat so I stopped. I will admit that those 8 bites, while the right size, chewed at least 30 times, and not dry, might have been eaten a little faster than I normally would have since I was talking to my husband about our current bathroom remodel and was not totally focusing on what I was doing. It didn't take more than a couple of minutes for it all to come back up. I waited about an hour and went back to liquid instead. I tried a protien drink but that came back as well so I again waited awhile then went to tomato Soup made with fat free milk and I was able to keep that down. However, this morning I got up and I have tried hot Water, hot tea, more soup, yogurt, and black coffee all in an attempt to get something down. I was able to drink a very small amount of hot tea when I took my Mucinex and keep that down but everything I have tried since then comes back up. I have looked at everything I am supposed to be doing and aside from last night possibly eating too fast I can't find anything out of order. Why would I be ok earlier in the week and then now have a problem? I do intend to call my doctor in the morning if this keeps up but I just wondered if anyone has had this happen after a fill and it just took a few days for the pouch/stomach to adjust and did not end up having to have anything taken out of the band or am I too tight? Sorry for the long post i was just trying to include as much detail as possible.

10 Mistakes WLS Patients Make...
LipstickLady replied to 1Day1Life4Now's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I disagree with going for the low fat options. Oftentimes, manufacturers replace fat with sugar which goes against the high protein/low carb rule. I'd rather have real yogurt, real cheese, real sour cream, than chemically manipulated "lower fat" varieties. Added benefit? Fat keeps you fuller longer. -
I'm on my second week with Bariatric Advantage shakes. At first it wasn't so bad, but the sweetness of them is getting to me. I've been adding bananas and other fruits to them to try to cut the sweet. I went tonight and got unflavored whey Protein. I'm going to try that and see if that's better. I was told that I could add fruit, nuts, honey, yogurt or Peanut Butter to them. Maybe try those options.
