I suffer from seborrheic dermatitis. Effects my face, scalp, and ears. Dry skin is a problem I have but this rash isnβt from dry skin. I followed an extremely low carb diet pre op. Stuck to protein first and good fats so somewhat of a Keto diet I suppose. Post op I followed the shakes, and liquids. My mouth becomes dry now, and thereβs this constant like metallic taste I have. Iβm constantly sipping either water or sugar free Powerade. The rash itself is red spots, itchy across my chest extending back on my shoulders and on my back. Thrush? Thatβs a mouth issue. Skin folds arenβt an issue in my chest? I donβt have wrinkles. Iβm aware of blood thinner bruises I had those when I was given the injections to take after my c section.

After gastric bypass surgery, the amount of food you consume is minimal. Instead your body is using the stored fat in your body as fuel. According to the internet: the liver utilizes the fat present in the body as an energy source, producing βketonesβ in the process. This is known as βketosisβ β and is the process from where keto diets get their unusual name. These ketone bodies come in three common forms; acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate and acetone. In large quantities they are removed from the body in the urine or through exhalation. Now I never really smelled my breath after surgery. But others complained that my breath smelled like death itself. But I did suffer from something called dry mouth. I found that a mouthwash called Biotene corrected that condition. Now I do not remember anything like a Keto rash. After surgery my body looked like it underwent WW II. It was totally covered with bruises. The bruises were in part a product of the blood thinner I had to take for a few weeks after surgery to prevent blood clots. These will heal. But I did experience another condition. When you lose significant weight, you are left with excess skin. Nowhere is this visible more than on your face. I developed very fine wrinkles; almost paper thin crinkles, all over my face. I looked like I was a hundred years old. I think women have the upper hand on this problem. My wife told me to use Bio-Oil available in most drug stores. I apply a dab on my face each morning and I am good to go. I have been using this for over 5 years and it solves that problem.

I think we all must find the way that works, and works for us long term. But this new article came up on my Mozilla screen this morning and it was significant enough for me to share with my IF buddies. Cuz through IF we are all seeking to effect hormonal changes in our body that may be able to change the course of our life and disease that may affect us later. This study is significant in that: 1. It has a significant number of study participants 2. It is one of the Gold Standards of study design: Randomized Controlled Study 3. It has very little conflicting interests 4. It was well designed with ACTUAL low carb partitions, not just a falsely labeled specious "low carb diet" that was actually a high carb diet at 51%... So anyway, just wanted to share, not trying to influence anyone or cram my lifestyle down anyone's throat claiming mine is superior. Only showing that this is just a new study that provides food for thoughts. Not trying to spark a war here btw. So please, only civil discourse in our little Shangri La! -
Maybe best to get the strips to check. If you donβt mind my asking what are you eating that is putting you in ketosis? My first two weeks were free fluids and I found thereβs not that many keto choices except the pre op shakes. I did have bad breath but it was from the protein drinks (though I had too many dairy products to be in ketosis).

And I wonder whether mine is keto rash , skin folds thrush or a combo, anyone want to weigh in a help me decide? Even in weight loss THAT WORD comes up. And my son Tomkitten, the shower Everyday Harry of the Western World only has 1 prescription, he's in his 30s, his skin can stand having its natural oils depleted! Mine , unless I use Dove, Crack and Dry you out Baby!

Has anyone gone into Ketosis at 2 weeks out from surgery? I havenβt bought the strips yet as I havenβt even thought about Ketosis because Iβve been focusing on maintaining with the diet. I have what looks to be a Keto rash and my breath smells like all the time now. Dr told me to monitor the rash and although he didnβt say anything about Keto rash it looks exactly like the pics Iβve seen online. Anyone else have this issue throughout their journey?

How long do you need to prioritise protein?

I'm sure it is different for everyone, but I eat protein first, then veggies. I don't deny myself any type of food. I eat a slice of pizza if I want it but I make sure it has lots of protein on it (cheese, meat, then a few veggies). I usually only eat 1 slice but it is enough to curb my appetite. There are also several Keto recipes (chicken or cauliflower crust) that are actually great alternatives. I also eat Keto protein waffles or pancakes if I feel a weekend splurge creeping up. On days that I feel I am not managing my protein as well I have some protein gel shots that have 20g of pure protein. I mix it with 1 ounce of water but you can do just the gel if you like the intense flavor. I also try to hit 45-60 g of protein per day. -

I love your replies to my posts, man! It's a relief to know the issue can subside after a while. That motto holds true for the keto world too....never trust a keto fart! I'm mostly fartless now though and have been for a while, but if I change my MCT products to a new brand or something, the gurgles can hit unexpectedly. Usually one Imodium will calm it down in about 30 min. Since you're so helpful, what's your take on pills...literally? How soon, if ever, can someone begin to take capsules or tablets? I take an anti-depressant daily and the tablet is about the size of a piece of couscous, very tiny. Also, I take electrolyte salts in capsule form to ward off kidney issues and muscle cramps from keto. They're your standard size capsule and I'm usually taking 3 at a time twice a day. I also have a liquid electrolye supplement that you can squirt into about anything, but you don't quite get the same dose as the capsules of salts plus it makes your drinks extra salty tasting. For future bariatric vitamins I'm looking into the Tespo thing for the all in one shot option, but what about everything else? -

I'm post RNY. Am a long term low carber in ketosis for a long time. As @Matt Z and @CrankyMagpie shared, it is possible. I am definitely in ketosis. I am still low carb rather than calling me a keto girl. I do have to do low-er fat in order not to have bad reactions. If I eat too richly (too much fat/too much cheese) then I will get horribly nauseated and feel like I'm so ill. But I routinely eat between 40-55% fat on some days and am fine. You'd be surprised how little extra fat that represents, once you factor in the need to stay at your personal present "protein adequate level" and reduce your carbs to 20g net carbs (or total carbs) per day. I personally aim for a loose average of 30g net carbs per day mostly from leafy greens, low glycemic veggies, berries, seeds/nuts, eggs, dairy and eat very very few sugar alcohols. I do use some small amounts of liquid stevia drops. -

Very cool! I havenβt had surgery yet so Iβm looking for ideas to help lessen future hair loss and preserve skin elasticity. Iβve taken CP before as part of my keto diet, but I was going over on my protein macros too easily and decided to quit the CP to free up some room for actual food. I never gave it time to see any results from it so I think Iβm going to add it back just to get ahead of the game. ππΌ -

You can definitely do keto, but it might not be especially high fat for a while--most bariatric nutritionists seem to favor a low-fat, low-carb diet for new patients. And very few people get through the first few weeks without something artificial. (I relied on sugar-free jello, sugar-free popsicles, and SO MANY PROTEIN SHAKES.) If you're really dedicated, though, you could probably minimize most of that. For instance, Eggface suggests "double milk" (1 cup Milk mixed with 1/3 cup Nonfat Dry Milk Powder = 16 grams of protein per 8 oz. serving) as one option. Most plans won't force you to eat beans or fruit or high-carb veggies, though; the focus is very much on protein sources, mostly animal-based ones. If you're worried about dumping from high-fat keto, you might consider discussing the option of the sleeve instead of the bypass with your surgical team. (There are people with sleeves who experience dumping, but it's pretty rare.) But like Matt said, not everyone who goes bypass has a dumping problem from fat, either. -

Only issue might depend on you, some can't deal with high fat foods, me, no issues at all with keto diet or high fats. -

Hey folks...Iβm still in the very early stages of preparing for a possible RNY in a couple months and have tons of questions. First being...can I still keto? For the past year and half, Iβve been following a strict ketogenic/LCHF diet. No sugar, no fruit, grains, bread, very low carb. Mostly high fat dairy, fatty meats and other protein sources. Basically avoiding anything natural or unnatural that spikes blood sugar or insulin (Iβm not diabetic, thatβs just what keto is about) I had to train myself to get used to that and eating high fat everything, fat in my coffee, MCT oil and powder, electrolyte supplement pills, collagen peptide supplements, etc. Iβm pretty sure after RNY, keto will be a thing of the past and that kinda makes me sad. It has been a great way of eating for me, Iβve lost weight (just not enough) and I feel great on it and donβt want to abandon eating this way. Are there any post-op Ketonians here that can ease my mind? -
I was sleeved 7/4/17, so I am a little over a year out. I was sleeved in Mx, so I haven't seen my bariatric team since my surgery (as far as post op checkups, etc.) . My weight loss has slowed down quite a bit and I have been between 173-178 for the past few months (30 years old, 5'8 and trying my best to exercise 3-5 times a week). I was hoping that some people who were about a year out could tell me how they are doing and what their approx. macros are. I have been trying to follow bariatric keto for a few months...but it really doesn't seem to be a good fit for me. I had the ketone strips and joined a special "bariatric keto" group on Facebook and they provided me with macros, but according to the strips I never got into ketosis Any advice or support would be greatly appreciated. I know I have come so far and made great progress, but I would like to continue this journey and get to a "normal" BMI before adding on to our family. Currently, I'm eating anywhere between 1,000 - 1,200 calories a day. Protein : 60-80 g Carbs: 0-50g (total, not net) Most days typically under 25g Fat: 25-65g Water: 80-100oz

I feel like there should be a challenge: If you can wrap it in turkey breast you can have it. Lol There are so many diabetic and Keto friendly recipes out there now, I think this shouldn't be a major problem if anyone really really really wants to participate. Prep and bring you own foods, mostly eat those, force people to try your recipes, taste a few regular foods. Live life.

If you're not trying to eat keto, then you have WAY more options at keeping this at bay. Biotene spray is magnificent. All of the Biotene products are great. High protein diets just naturally cause rank breath too. Dehydration on top of all that makes for one stanky combintation LOL Electrolytes are soooooo important at keeping hydration in check when you can't just chug water anymore. Even if do drink a lot of water, but aren't eating much salt, you aren't replenishing the vital electrolytes your body needs quick enough before you're flushing them right out again. You'll feel sluggish, get muscle cramps and charlie horses, get heart palpitations, jitters...just overall, you'll feel like crap. Drinking a Powerade Zero is just not enough to replenish what you're losing. Gotta supplement, like everything else -

Quit bein' a wienie and drink some water and decaff! hahaha Ok, seriously girl, the only way I make it is to drink decaff black coffee and also decaff tea all day in addition to my water. I don't know why this helps me but it really quenches my hunger when it hits? Also, know that when hunger hits, it will go away in about 20 minutes or less and each time you get through breakthrough hunger it makes you stronger and the hunger more wimpy. Does that help at all? And at the worse, have a cup of regular bouillon. Sometimes salt (Pink Himalayan) sea salt and the salt in bouillon will help cravings and hunger go away. (Also, no way could I do this if I wasn't already keto/low carb...if I was a sugar burner, this would be torture. -
I'm not sure if one post on four topics is more annoying, or if four posts would be more annoying. Sorry if I guessed wrong. I'm not checking this site quite as often, now, and when I do come in, I mostly only ever look at this thread, to see how my October surgery friends are doing. Carbs: I wouldn't say it's exactly the whole truth that we "can't have bread or rice," as a blanket statement. Like, no, not right now -- at least not unless your team said toast was OK, as some do. But long term, yeah, most of us will probably reintroduce whole grain bread and brown rice in small amounts. Some people might choose not to, but that's a personal choice, not a rule we all have to follow. Some plans (Kaiser, for instance) have people eating mashed potatoes now, so the "no carbs" thing is just one school of thought that some of the veterans on this site (and probably some nutritionists who are really into keto) push, but it is by no means a universal bariatric surgery rule. Liquid: This wouldn't have worked for me right after surgery, but as soon as I was able to take normal-size drinks (as opposed to those super careful small sips immediately after surgery), I went back to using my favorite mugs with hot beverages that I really enjoy (decaf hot teas, decaf coffee). One is 20 ounces, and the other is 24 ounces, so I only have to drink three mugfuls per day to get to 64 oz. I find it a lot easier to get to my goal because it feels manageable ("three mugfuls" combined with "I like this beverage") than if I'm using smaller cups or forcing down plain water (which hurts, sometimes). Pre-op, I did the same thing with water bottles, sometimes with Mio or something in them, sometimes with cold herbal teas, sometimes plain. That's probably what I'll do next summer, when hot beverages are less appealing. π I kind of expect my sleeve to be more consistently OK with water by then, too. Goals: Did your teams give you weight loss goals? Mine didn't, for which I'm grateful, though I know the average for the sleeve is 60% excess weight lost. (Take your weight on surgery day. Find your ideal weight--I use one of the higher numbers, since I've always been heavy and will have more bone structure to support that than someone who spent most of their life thin. Subtract your ideal weight from your surgery weight. That is your excess weight. Multiply that by .6 to get 60%, and subtract that number from your surgery day weight. That is how much you can reasonably expect to lose and keep off, long-term--but it's just an average: some people do better, and some do worse.) So I've got that number in a spreadsheet, a year out from my surgery, and I'm tracking my progress once a week to see if I'm on track for that, with a little chart that shows how I'm losing extra fast right now, even with stalls. (To be clear: not everyone gets there in 12 months, and I don't fully expect to, since I'm battling arthritis, which limits my activity a bit. Many people lose for the first 18 months or so--faster in the beginning, slower toward the 18 month mark. Weight loss tends to be about done, at that point, unless you are really working hard, either athletically or with an extra restrictive diet.) Motivation: I see people lamenting stalls. I wonder if the weight loss chart would help you? Because I had a week and a half stall, and I could still see clearly that my weight loss line was below a straight one year line to the average goal weight for where I started. Also, for your mental health, please stop weighing yourself daily if you are the kind of person who will be upset by a stall. Also, if you haven't already, take measurements. How many inches around is your calf at its largest point? Your thigh? Your hips? Your waist? Your neck? Your upper arm? Write all that down. When you hit a stall, pull out the measuring tape. Seeing those differences will help you see that you're still making progress. β€οΈ

I live in a small town and milk is fine for me. I sometimes mix it with cream to lower the carbs a bit. I think the only thing we can do is stick to it. If one thing in the keto diet doesn't work, I try another. We have a choice, find a way that works to lose the weight, or give up and never find success. There are a lot of excuses out there, and I've used them--too busy, too broke, too tired, My disability has taken everything else from me, I'm not giving up this. But they were excuses. Unfortunately, losing weight has never helped me feel better. I might have lost it sooner if it did. I feel the same, no matter what. I understand that isn't normal. And at my age and health, I just get feeling worse as time goes by. At least I know I'm not getting worse as fast as I could.

Drink a cup of bouillon (with sodium full strength) and hydrate. Also take a tsp of MOM (milk of magnesia for 425mg of magnesium per day). According to the low carb docs this is the prescription for getting past the "keto flu" or carb withdrawal and headaches that happen when getting off of sugar-burning and onto fat-burning. As bad as it sucks, it's far better to feel craptastic now, than to experience this withdrawal and transition AFTER surgery. Dear God, the humanity in doing it the other way. Hang in there. -
