    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

I had my surgery on 3/24 and im doing well. Gas pains are in my shoulder and the top of my pouch. I’ve been walking in my house ever 30 mins. This morning was the First time I was able to drink a half a cup of sugar free Powerade. I had my buyers remorse when night after my surgery. Everything hurt and I just cried. I’m so glad I feel better today.

Now thinking if canceling surgery 🥺

So I had been taking the medication (Omeprazole/Prilosec) for 5+ years. About a month before the sleeve surgery I was required to stop taking it for 2 weeks in order to take an H-Pylori test. I stopped cold turkey and never took it again either before or after surgery. I had an endoscopy 18 months after WLS, I can't remember why, and my surgeon showed my evidence of GERD anymore. I never restarted taking it.

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

I am intrigued by how varied each insurance company and surgeon requirements are by reading what we all must do. I did have an appointment to weigh in at the bariatric center and to meet the surgeon and have my picture taken. So many start a liquid diet three weeks out or more, just 3 days for me. It's all kinda crazy.

    1 yr out food

I looked it up on MFP, and the week of my 1 year anniversary, I averaged 2200 calories a day. Mind you, at the time, I was running min 5k almost every day, and some strength training, and a host of other activities keeping me active. I was 115 lbs at 1 yr (I’m 5’2” female). Today, Im 3.5 years out and i average about 1800-ish cals a day…adjusted because i am no where near as active as I used to be. This morning I weighed 118.8 (I’m still a 5’2” female, lol) Regarding calories, it’s actually quite easy to rack those up in a day. If you eat low-volume, high-calorie foods, you can reach 1700 cals in no time (nuts, oils, cheese, avocados, etc). Heck, I ate about a cup of chicharron/pork rinds the other day that totalled 600 calories…and it had 67g of protein and zero carbs, if that interests you. It will take time and getting used to, but you’ll get there eventually. So long as your labs come back fine and your doctor is not concerned for your health, i figure you should be ok taking your own time to reach calorie goals. Good Luck! ❤️
  5. It's like reading a post from 3 months back (that I don't understand, still). Thank god we've moved on up here.
  6. That's a good idea! Thanks for the suggestion. My insurance should cover a repair that isn't actually bariatric surgery. I wonder if the surgeon could do a bypass and my secondary would pick it up when my primary doesn't. I'll have to research more about it. I have an appt. with a surgeon in a couple weeks. Who is your surgeon?

Now thinking if canceling surgery 🥺

Don't over think it, This fear (GERD) drove me to have a melt down right before surgery and to be highly anxious for weeks after surgery. I had reflux before surgery for many years and had been on 20-40 mg of Nexium daily for about 15 years and as my weight got higher so did the occurrence of my reflux to the point of along with the Nexium I was going through a bottle of Gaviscon a week. fast forward 8 months post op I still take 20 mg Nexium daily but only because I am to scared to tapper off as I remember the rebound reflux from prior to surgery when I would try to come off them and I have to be honest I suck a Gaviscon dual tablet if I get the slightest inkling of reflux which I think half the time is in my head lol. So prior to surgery I told my surgeon reflux was my biggest fear as I didn't want a bypass either and I certainly didn't want to have to have a second surgery, He said the weight loss would reduce the reflux and I think he is right. its just my own fears and thinking about it and sometimes eating the wrong things or too much that causes me get reflux now and its pretty mild. Now I am going to say this and I don't mean any offence to anyone as it is just what I have observed, a lot people who have had revision surgery due to GERD/reflux also seem to have had a substantial weight gain too, now if anyone out there has experienced different I stand corrected but that's what I have noticed. So that is a pretty good incentive for me not to regain. Talk to your surgeon though as he/she is the best to advise you we can only share our experiences

    Not losing weight

I meant pre-op. I’m still in the beginning phase. I haven’t gotten my surgery date yet. Update on this…I did see my surgeon today. Although I was worried, he wasn’t upset. I did manage to lose 1.8 pounds. Mother Nature did come this week and I was bloated. Also, I have been losing more than he asked the previous months so we are just going to shake it off this month and move forward through this stall. Thanks everyone.

    Worried and regretting…

Girl I feel literally the exact same. I was sleeved on 3/11/22 and I have been feeling a lot of regret. I barely get any protein in, if any. I also have found that I am nauseated by basically everything. The thought of eating makes me nauseous. I too have been told to take it day by day… I found that “Chicken and Stars” soup sits pretty well with me… good luck to you - I’m sure it all gets better

    Pre & Post Workout Meals

I remember watching a documentary on obesity (can’t remember its name) & a doctor pointing out that obese people have been weight training 7 days a week for years as they carried around their weight. I was rather surprised but it makes sense when you think about it. The difference is when you do weights at a gym you use different muscle. Plus as you lose weight, your posture improves as your centre of balance changes so you may have to retrain muscles, tendons, etc, too. But in answer to your question: protein. Your body uses protein for recovery & healing, and muscle & bone health & growth. There’s some information about now saying that your body can’t absorb more than 25g of protein at a time & excess is stored as fat. Something to take into consideration. Congrats on your weight loss so far.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

My sleeve is so unpredictable. I’ll have days where I swear I can eat like a “normal” person and I honestly forget I’m sleeved. Then I’ll have days where a boiled egg fills me up for hours and I have zero interest in eating. What’s even weirder is that my husband- who has NOT had any bari surgery- eats a lot like me and sometimes he runs into restriction. Tonite we had date night and went to one of our favorite pubs. We split a chicken sandwich with fries, each had 1 cocktail and 1 beer. We didn’t even manage to finish half of our halves of the sandwich and also failed to drink over half our beers! We laughed that we were failing so bad at splurging. One thing that is kind of alarming me is that my acid reflux seems to be kicked in overdrive lately. I’m about to really clean up my eating and drinking prepping for this next foot surgery, so I’m hoping to catch a break from the constant heartburn. I really, really, really am happy with where I am and the LAST thing I want is a revision due to this reflux. I love my sleeve— I don’t want a pouch. I don’t have the best tips to remember to drink water bc I guzzle down 2/3 of my daily water before I eat for the first time of the day. I’ll literally have around 60 ounces of water between waking up and eating around 10-11 am, then drink maybe 12-16 more the whole rest of the day. It tends to leave me feeling somewhat dehydrated by bedtime, but bedtime is when I will “treat” myself to my Coke Zero. My hair never really came back. It’s still fairly thin, but I will never regret having the VGS. Good God, I hope the kidney stone thing never happens to me: I’m a wimp when it comes to stuff like that.

My surgery was 3/23 too! the first day was awful. Second day a little better. Today is much better and more like what I expected. So far, I can drink a lot of fluids without any problems. It makes me a little concerned.

    Food Before and After Photos

Not dense at all. If you can handle eggs then its prob fine, it's just egg whites and a tiny amount of cheese. 1 cup of egg whites, 3 tablespoons of shredded white cheddar, Finley diced cooked spinach (I do no more than 1/2 a cup), 1/4 cup cooked diced bell pepper. Salt and pepper to taste. Pour into a 12 count Mini doughnut pan and bake at 350 for 6-8 min depending on your oven. Let them cool completely if you want to slice them in half like a bagel. I'm eating another now for dinner lol they're small and tasty. This is a toddler plate for reference. I'm having some sautéed squash, carrot and onion in tomato sauce on the side. (I know weird food combo but I am trying to get through leftovers before I leave for a trip)! Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

I'm doing the same thing - I'm calling it my 'food bucket list' -- favorite foods, favorite restaurants. Here is CIGNA's criteria: Adults Bariatric surgery for the treatment of morbid obesity in an adult (age ≥ 18 years) using a covered procedure outlined below is considered medically necessary when ALL of the following criteria are met: • EITHER of the following:  BMI (Body Mass Index) ≥ 40 kg/m2 (BMI ≥ 37.5 kg/m2 in Asians- when ethnicity is confirmed by provider attestation)  BMI (Body Mass Index) 35–39.9 kg/m2 (BMI 32.5–37.4 kg/m2 in Asians- when ethnicity is confirmed by provider attestation) with at least one clinically significant obesity-related comorbidity, including but not limited to the following: mechanical arthropathy in a weight-bearing joint (symptomatic degenerative joint disease in a weight bearing joint) diabetes mellitus o poorly controlled hypertension (systolic blood pressure at least 140 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressure 90 mm Hg or greater, despite optimal medical management) hyperlipidemia coronary artery disease lower extremity lymphatic or venous obstruction obstructive sleep apnea pulmonary hypertension evidence of fatty liver disease (i.e., nonalcoholic fatty liver disease [NAFLD] or nonalcoholic steatohepatitis [NASH]) gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) refractory to medical therapy • A thorough multidisciplinary evaluation within the previous 12 months which includes ALL of the following:  a description of the proposed procedure(s)  documentation of failure of weight loss by medical management  unequivocal clearance for bariatric surgery by a mental health provider  a nutritional evaluation by a physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner or registered dietician I meet the 40 BMI and at least 3 of the criteria for the lower BMI. Initially I was extremely confident I would be approved, but even with reaching all their milestones, I don't trust them.

Not gonna lie...I had a food funeral that lasted a few weeks (ok maybe more like a month) so I actually put on weight right before my pre op diet started. On the day of surgery, I was exactly 40. My doctor said my moderate sleep apnea was a co-morbidity (sleep apnea was discovered during sleep study required in my pre op testing) so I could actually be 35. I worried that since I was not doing anything to prevent the sleep apnea (i.e., CPAP), they could still deny me at 35. The hoops insurance puts us through is ridiculous!

It always amazes me how different insurance companies can be on their requirements! My BMI was 37, and I had to be over 35 with a preexisting condition(mild sleep apnea). Also, everyone's programs and length of phases are so different. I was in full liquids for two weeks, and now I'm on purred foods for a month!! Such a long time.
  18. Hello! Trying to find anyone in Connecticut who has United Healthcare. I am in the process of researching the sleeve as an option for me, however United Healthcare has a requirement that the hospital used for the procedure is Yale/New Haven. When I looked into the cost for Yale, it was 3 times as much as getting the surgery done, say, at Hartford Hospital. Does anyone have experience with this insurance or facility? If so, what did you end up paying out of pocket after the insurance paid their portion?

    Post op day 4 complications

I'm now 3.5 weeks post op and am feeling great! I can do soft foods in tiny amounts. 2 ounces of deli meat leaves me satisfied, any more than that and I'm absolutely miserable Sent from my Z5157V using BariatricPal mobile app
  20. 18 years ago, I had a RNY. I lost 124 lbs. I kept most of it off until the last 3 years when I gained about 45 pounds. I have been successful in losing weight that additional weight and am back with 5 pounds of my lowest weight! I did not have plastic surgery 18 years ago and it's my biggest regret. Now that I am stable in weight, I'm looking at plastic surgery. I've talked to 2 Docs. And I'm confused and torn. Doc#1 says Fleur. He says that I don't have much back skin/fat. He can pull the skin forward and tighten it. I have a pronounced belly that hangs quite low and I get heat rashes/yeast infections frequently. Doc#1 says that Fleur should be a great solution. He said it will also take care of my sagging mons. (Which I really want gone!) He will also tighten my abs after nearly 50 years of weight gain and loss. Doc#2 says to do a panniculectomy and lipo around the sides. She feels this is the best option as my frame is not necessarily curvy and she could not be sure of getting a flatter tummy. Let's assume, this is all out of pocket cost. I like both Docs. Which would you choose and why? I could use some insight and advice! Thanks

    March 2022 Surgery Buddies

3.5 weeks post op revision to bypass for severe GERD, down 14 pounds, which I'm super thrilled about! In the past couple of days I've started to feel fairly normal physically. The biggest mind trip is getting full on 2 oz of deli meat. If I eat any more than that I feel miserable. No problems getting my fluids in. I went back to work last week and felt good but this week I can tell I'm back to full strength. I even started walking on the track at the adults only community center I joined (and health insurance pays for). The Y has a track too but it's always sooooo loud and busy. March 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hi! Had a gastric sleeve on the 22nd. Currently 3 days post op. It seems every time I get up, there is like a tightness in the stomach after I sipped on a shake. It feels like air, like gas almost. I walk around waiting for it to come up and it is usually more of a hiccup that hurts a lot compared to an actual burp. Is this normal?

I would definitely wait. I totally get your concerns and I know that most doctors have the 2 week liquid diet but in reality I know many people who they “pushed thru” with just a few days liquid prior. So yea I would not loose. Insurance can be a b***h!

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

Thank you --- this is extremely helpful. I am 67 so that explains the stress test. My dh is 56 and is having hernia surgery in 2 weeks and no stress test for him. I know that the cardiologist told me if I can't complete the regular treadmill stress test, he will do a thallium stress test ( which I've had in the past with the IV etc). Is a chemical stress test the same as a thallium stress test -- with the IV and all? Thanks again.

THIS ⬆️ Exactly my concern. Should I wait and not do the pre-op diet till insurance approves? I am trying to do the surgery April 11 or pretty much any day that week as it is spring break and i do not want to take time off from school. My surgeon and his admin know this.
