    Constipated HELP!!

Ok I had this issue (I’m 2 weeks out today). How I solved it was Milk of Magnesia during the day and Miralax at night plus 2 stool softeners and you’ll start going. Plus all the water. It will start. Finally yesterday morning I went like pre-surgery and I think I turned the corner. I’m only doing 2 softeners now. Feel better it will work!
  3. Hello All, I had my sleeve surgery exactly 7 months ago. Have done great with weight loss and no complications. I had my 6 month follow up last month, and surgeon said I was doing great. He asked if I was hungry, I said no. Fast forward just 2-3 days, and I started grazing. It has gone on for 3 weeks now and in scared. I'm not hungry. I can graze even after meals when I feel full. It's like a few bites of fruit or almonds or now its carrots. I weigh daily which isn't an emotional issue for me. It's just a check. I am at goal so I'm not trying to lose more, but I'm not wanting to use grazing to maintain weight either. I was going to ask at my 8 month follow up appt next month, what should I do to stop losing and just maintai. Looks like I've found it. But, I dont want grazing to be the answer. For those of you who had challenges with grazing, how did you stop it? Mine is totally mental. It started after my first true vacation in october. I did great with staying on plan during the trip. When I got back home, I felt the "back home from vacation" letdown and maybe even a little boredom. Then I started grazing. I need to stop. I'm scared because my restriction is a little less, and I don't want to trigger a bad habit. It's been 3 weeks. Please share what helped you stop. P.S. Yes, I'm alerting my dietitian today also. But, you all can share lived experience of what helped you stop. Thanks!

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

I have my surgery on 11/19 with Dr. Misra in Beverly Hills, CA. I’m 33, 6’2” and a touch over 400lbs. I’m totally stoked to have my surgery and am getting all set up to have a boring thanksgiving alone! My doctor requested I get a sleep study and endoscopy before surgery so I’m doing that this week. I’ve only told my close family and couple friends so far.
  5. I am getting the Sleeve in December- the Dr said the 15th or 22nd but will confirm with me the date when I see him on November 16. My husbands off the week of Christmas because his company shuts down for two weeks every year so he wants it the 22nd. So I am hoping my Dr will let me choose that date!

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

I find it pretty interesting as well... The pre-op diets really vary from doctor to doctor. I was instructed to do a strict 10 day liquid diet (protein shakes, broth, tea, sugar free jello) and the day before surgery I had to switch to a clear liquid diet (apple juice, tea, protein water) along with a colon cleanse laxative... Now post-op, I'm on day 6 of the post-op clear liquid diet. Tuesday (after my 1 week checkup appointment) I'll be able to go back to drinking protein shakes, coffee, tea, as well as adding 2 tablespoons of grits, mal-to-meal, and yogurt! This diet lasts for 2 weeks. I'm really looking forward to this next phase! 🤗
  7. • How did your tummy feel after the surgery? Were you able to *feel* your stomach, internally due to the surgery? - Nope couldn’t feel my tummy. The staged return to eating solid food is to support the internal healing. If you follow that carefully you shouldn’t feel any pain just maybe some discomfort (sort of too full feeling), tightness, gurgling or nausea. Pain on swallowing is likely from initial swelling & you will have pain from pulled abdominal muscles & sometimes at the incision sites. . • Did you have to have a drain? - No drain. Ask your surgeon if they will put one in or not. • How long did you have to be on clear fluids after the surgery? If so, what clear fluids did you have? - Two weeks any liquids. You have to start meeting your protein goals so protein shakes, bone broths, strained soups (no lumps or herby bits), Asian broths (pho, wonton soups, etc just the broth). Milk, green (or herbal) tea were also allowed. I wasn’t allowed juice. • Did you prefer cold, room temperature, or warm fluids? - Room temp or warm/hot were more soothing. I often used warm water for my shakes or microwaved them. • Sipping. - Not a mouthful but a single small swallow. Some surgeons say no to straws but they can be helpful to moderate the size of your sip. You sip as often as you’re able depending on swelling & your healing. Some sip every couple of minutes. Some every 5 or so. Some set alarms to remind them to sip. Just keep the water next to you at all times. And all the fluids you consume count towards your fluid goals. I struggled to swallow initially because of swelling. It was ok after about two days. • Something I read said you won't be able to drink anything for the first 24 hours and that fluids will be through the IV, is that true? - I had water by my bed straight away (& a dishwater broth for dinner that night) plus an IV. • How did you sleep in the first week? If you are a side sleeper, when were you able to finally sleep on your side? - I can’t sleep on my back at all only nap on the coach on my back. I slept on my side from the day of surgery. I also tend to sleep on my side but twisted to almost on my tummy. Could do this pretty much straight away too. A pillow to support you sleep on your side may be helpful. Whether you can or can’t sleep on your side would depend on how much pain you feel from the pulled abdominal muscles & how much internal swelling you have. All the best with your surgery & recovery.

    Bad eating habits

I’m going through a “get back to plan” moment too. I’m just focusing on one day at a time. I started by making sure I drank my water. If I drank my water I was on plan. Then I refocused on protein and measuring. Then if I could do that, I was on plan. Lastly, I had to track my food intake. If I was tracking I was on plan. It took about a week to resort myself but it’s working. I realized I was just tired of the healthy lifestyle I had been following for a solid year. I went to yoga and meditated about my intentions and checked in with myself. The Halloween candy seriously made my knees hurt and caused my asthma to wheeze again. The struggle is real. I’m just getting through this lifetime of healthy choices moment by moment, day by day. It’s a little overwhelming to think farther than that. You will get back to plan when you are ready. Start with one thing.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

I didn’t experience that at all. I guess I’ve been super lucky. All liquids have gone down pretty well. I’ve had protein shakes, broth, jello, yogurt and some black bean soup today. One more week of the full liquids. How are you doing now?
  10. • My apologies if this is worded weirdly.. but, How did your tummy feel after the surgery? Were you able to *feel* your stomach, internally due to the surgery? - I could not feel my stomach. I had minimal discomfort and it was controlled with OTC Tylenol. I also had no nausea whatsoever. • Did you have to have a drain? Note: I'm not sure if this is absolutely necessary, I assume they would discuss it with me tomorrow. If so, how did that feel? Did it hurt or feel weird when it was removed? - no drain. It was laparoscopic for me. • How long did you have to be on clear fluids after thesurgery? If so, what clear fluids did you have? - I was surprised - the morning after the surgery they offered me protein shakes. • Did you prefer cold, room temperature, or warm fluids? - I had no preference, and was permitted (and able) to take all temps. • Sipping. This one is a point of major confusion for me. Would the process of sipping be taking in enough just to wet your tongue, or is it enough to swallow? How long did it last for you? When were you able to drink down 1 ounce of Fluidin one go even if slowly rather than over the course of 30 minutes or so? - I interpret sipping as “baby” swallows - more than just wetting my lips/tongue, but smaller than a gulp. • Something I read said you won't be able to drink anything for the first 24 hours and that fluids will be through the IV, is that true? - that may vary from surgeon to surgeon. I was able to sip clear liquids the evening of the day of my surgery. • How did you sleep in the first week? If you are a side sleeper, when were you able to finally sleep on your side? - I was able to sleep fully prone in my bed, on my back and on my side. LurkieKitty, you’ll do fine - I have no regrets whatsoever. I will keep you in my prayers!

You just have to give yourself grace and keep trying. We all know it’s not easy but the good news is two weeks did not stretch out your sleeve. Your tool will still work, you just have to stick to your plan and let it work for you.

One week Post Opp Pain, need advice.

I know what you're talking about--that sudden pain when you go to lower yourself down into bed or something and you tweak one of those muscles that was cut into in the wrong way and it feels like you're being stabbed. I think that only lasted about 2 weeks for me, and you get better over time at avoiding those positions while you're healing.

    Back To The Basics

Introduce new foods slowly--as you may have already found out, things you were able to eat with no problem before may be trouble for you now (as I found out when I tried to eat an avocado a week ago and felt horrible for two days).
  14. I have been eating really bad for the last week and I’m now discouraged 🥲 how can I clean my system and start over. I was sleeved April first and has only 54 lbs (I been at 245 for almost 2 months now) and I know I should be down more than that. I really wanna make this sleeve work the way it’s supposed to so I’m willing to start over but don’t know if I have messed it up

    ####ing SKIN TAGS!

The old fashioned way to deal with them is to tie cotton around them a wait till they drop off. You can buy a kit online that is similar but it uses teeny tiny elastic bands, In my opinion you need someone to do it for you, { even though the online kit says you can do it yourself } If you stick a band aid over it, you can forget it for a week then have a look,

How did the surgery feel for you starting out?

I had my sleeve 2 days ago.. this was my experience.. • How did your tummy feel after the surgery? > Not really. I only felt the stiches, if I touched/pressed on them, or if I bent down too much. I had my surgery at 3 PM, around 7 PM my wife helped me walk a bit on the hallway. By 11 PM I was walking by myself doing laps . The one thing I did feel is the gas pain, that was somewhat uncomfortable, 2 days post, it's almost all gone. • Did you have to have a drain? > No drain. Incisions are super tiny. • How long did you have to be on clear fluids after the surgery? > 4 days on clear liquids (Water, crystal Light, Gatorade Zero, Broth) Then 3 days on Clear Protein liquids (Gatorade Zero Protein, Protein Water, etc) Then on to regular liquid diet (Protein Shakes, Broth, liquified soupds, etc) HOWEVER, every surgeon has their own playbook, you'll have to follow yours. • Did you prefer cold, room temperature, or warm fluids? > I am drinking cold water (with and without Crystal Light) and gold Gatorade Zero. Bt the warm Chicken Broth is super welcome. • Sipping. > I use a 1 oz medicine cup. Drank it in 2 sips on the first day, now I can just gulp it. Was told to drink 1 oz every 15 mins. Now I am going wild, and reduced that to 10 mins.. LOL • Drinking for the first 24 hours? > You can drink right after you are out of surgery, and sober enough. You don't need to drink, since the IV keeps you hydrated. But, 1 oz of water did wonders for the gas issue. I would wake with pain, drink 1 oz, and walk around, go to sleep, rinse and repeat. Having said that the day after surgery, I had the leak test X-Ray, and I couldn't drink anything after 12 AM that day. • How did you sleep in the first week? > Using a recliner. It's easier to get on/off.. Anyways, congrats on taking this step, you'll do great!

    6 weeks post op

Congratulations! You're about where I was 6 weeks out... it's kind of insane how quickly it dropped off. I noticed my joint pain is just... gone.
  18. 1. Could you feel your stomach? No, not really. I felt the incisions, but honestly there was so much gas that I didn't feel anything. I worried about this too, especially as I started to drink my liquids, but it was fine. I did feel my stomach about three weeks post-op as the nerves re-grew, but it truly wasn't even pain, just sort of "what on earth is that sensation..." Now I'm fine and doing sit-ups and tuck-ups and kip swings off a bar and bracing for heavy weight lifting no problem. I never took any of the serious pain drugs, and only needed 4-5 doses of Tylenol the first week. 2. Did you have a drain? No. There was a tiny bit of discharge from the largest incision (where they withdraw the stomach), but only for one day. 3. How long on clear fluids? Not at all. I was started on full liquids literally in the hospital. I had to have one day of clear fluids pre-op in order to clear my system so they could see what was going on. 4. Cold, tepid, or warm fluids? At first, tepid or warm fluids felt better. Cold ones were a shock. Now I can drink whatever (8 weeks out). 5. Sipping? I took trepidatious little sips in the hospital. By the time I got home later that day (I didn't even stay overnight), I was taking small but normal sips, at least 3/4 ounce. By three weeks out I was able to take nice little gulps. Now, 8 weeks out, if I want to (if I've been running, f.ex.) I can take 3-4 real gulps in a row. 6. Can't drink for the first 24 hours? Absolute b*llocks. I literally was handed a tray with broth, unsweetened cranberry juice, and cream of rice as soon as I was transferred from the recovery room to my hospital room. That said, I did have dry mouth even drinking. Get you a thing of Biotene at any drugstore and spray it in your mouth. It's the weirdest sensation but it helps immensely. 7. Sleeping? I spent the first night on my back because I would have to wriggle a bit to get on my side. I went back to side sleeping on Night Two. Oddly, as I've shrunk (down 51 lbs from surgery weight) I feel more comfortable sleeping on my back despite having been a side sleeper for decades.
  19. From 1 month lost op to 6 months post op. I am 130 lbs down from my start weight and 110lbs down from my day of surgery weight. AND 153 lbs down from my highest weight. I am still struggling with all this change, it is hard to believe the way I look. Then when I stalled I was so upset and afraid until my hubby pointed out that while I stalled on the scale I was winning in other places. My face was changing, he could wrap his arms around me and he had to hold higher up on his forarm to close completely around me. My arms are smaller, I have more stamina and strength. Thank God for his support, helping me to be strong and keep going.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

I had to do nothing after midnight (not even water) but then three hours before surgery I had to drink 12oz of gatorade. That had to do with nausea too.
  21. I had quite a bit of post-op pain and I went back to my surgeon and told him I needed stronger pain meds. He prescribed something stronger and I was good after that. I only needed the stronger meds for about a week and then I stepped back down to what he had originally prescribed.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Hello! I'm new to posting on the forum although, I have been lurking without an account for quite some time. My surgery is also tomorrow. They gave me three Ensure pre-surgery clear, they said take two by midnight, and the other 3 hours before the surgery.

    Food Before and After Photos

Parmesan crusted delicata squash. My side dish to go along with my Soup for lunches this week. Half a delicata squash, scoop out the seeds and then slice thin. Spritz with cooking spray. Top with garlic seasoning salt and freshly grated Parmesan cheese. Roast at 425 for 30 minutes. Yum!
  24. I am scheduled to get the gastric sleeve tomorrow morning and like the worry wart that I am, I am still doing research to prepare myself as much as possible. I have a few concerns/fears mostly related to recovery right out of the gate that I'm hoping I can find answers to. I know it will definitely vary person to person, but I'd still like to brace myself for what's to come.. or rather, what *could* come; Not so much rarer complications but the way your body actually feels. Here is the questions, thank you so much in advance to whoever takes the time to answer these! • My apologies if this is worded weirdly.. but, How did your tummy feel after the surgery? Were you able to *feel* your stomach, internally due to the surgery? - My reason for asking: I feel like I would have to mentally prepare myself if surgery can make my stomach feel like it's an open wound/raw. • Did you have to have a drain? Note: I'm not sure if this is absolutely necessary, I assume they would discuss it with me tomorrow. If so, how did that feel? Did it hurt or feel weird when it was removed? - My reason for asking: I didn't know this was something else that gets done with the surgery, I feel like the removal of it would make me rather queasy from the sensation. Yet another thing to mentally prepare for. • How long did you have to be on clear fluids after the surgery? If so, what clear fluids did you have? - My reason for asking: The clear fluids for two days prior has been hard for me since I've just been having chicken broth (which doesn't taste that great) and water, I might have to get some unsweetened apple juice or something. I don't think I can have something like Gatorade unfortunately due to my Citrus allergy. • Did you prefer cold, room temperature, or warm fluids? - My reason for asking: I imagine that if I'm able to feel my stomach in a weird way I'd probably be rather nauseous and prefer liquids on the warmer side. • Sipping. This one is a point of major confusion for me. Would the process of sipping be taking in enough just to wet your tongue, or is it enough to swallow? How long did it last for you? When were you able to drink down 1 ounce of fluid in one go even if slowly rather than over the course of 30 minutes or so? • Something I read said you won't be able to drink anything for the first 24 hours and that fluids will be through the IV, is that true? - My reason for asking: I tend to get a dry mouth/itchy throat when I don't drink water for awhile, so that's another worrisome thing. • How did you sleep in the first week? If you are a side sleeper, when were you able to finally sleep on your side? - My reason for asking: I'm a side sleeper, laying on my back tends to be extremely uncomfortable, I typically can only fall asleep on my back if I'm exhausted.
  25. I am one week post opp, and the soreness/pulling/muscle catching pain is still very intense for me. I am walking multiple times a day to try and help, but everywhere i've read people seem to barley have any pain from the surgery. Can anyone shed light on their experience with the pain after surgery? (P.S. im NOT talking gas, shoulder, or back pain) Im referring to the pain from the healing of the surgery, (incisions, super sore). What did y'all's timeline of pain look like? or was there something yall did to help heal faster?
