    Cigna

I had a very quick turnaround from CIGNA. Three days from submission to approval on the first attempt—but I had a BMI when I started of well above 50, and multiple co-morbidities. But here is the thing—CIGNA is both a traditional health insurance company, and also administers health plans for companies that self-pay their insurance. If you got CIGNA from an ACA exchange or if you work for a small or medium sized company, chances are you have the traditional health insurance. If you work for a large corporation, chances are they're just administering what your company has decided to pay for. You can tell which one you have by looking at the phone number on the back of your card. If it's different than 800-997-1654, or if it says "CIGNA's dedicated line for <company>", you are dealing with your employer, which is actually a bit easier. You can go to your company's benefits department and ask them to make an exception. If they are willing, they will overrule CIGNA's denial. Also, the CIGNA follow-up nurses are amazing. Got me connected to all manner of things I needed. She followed up for two months after surgery and then rang off.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

My pain is very tolerable now that I'm on day 8 post-op. For the past week, I have had an ice pack on my largest incision 24 hours a day. The ice packs REALLY helped tremendously! 🥶 I highly suggest getting 2 or more and keep your incision iced to numb the pain/discomfort as it heals. Last night was the first night where I could sleep without an ice pack. So my pain is definitely minimizing. I'm only taking Tylenol, Prilosec, a cramping relief medication and a gas relief medication. While in the hospital, I had pain coughing as well. I also had slight pain when taking in a deep breath. At the time, I was laying down while coughing/taking in deep breaths. I found when I stood up- that pain was not there while I was in standing position. My nurse and I both agreed that it was muscle pain and not an issue with my lungs (thank God because I was concerned about blood clots even though I have no past history). I did use a Spirometer to practice inhaling throughout my hospital stay and to reinflate my lungs after being put under anesthesia. Congratulations to you, too! I'm sorry to hear that you're coughing more. I would monitor your symptoms and reach out to your nurse if you do not feel you are improving. God forbid it's anything serious- but you don't want to wait too long if you are having lung pain (blood clots, Covid, etc)... I wish you the best and keep us posted on how you're doing. Sending love and support ♥️

I had pain on my right side for weeks, but yours could be something else. Glad you are checking with your doctor. Let us know!

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

Luckily my doctor allowed me to do soft foods 3 days post op for two weeks. I’m on solids and can eat anything and gulp water like a fish. But I’m hungry.
  5. I can officially say that she is BETTER! The cramping faded slowly, as did the radiating shoulder pain. She is now 2 weeks post op and already on soft foods (per her surgeon’s rules). She had a breakfast burrito this morning and is stoked to be eating “real food” again. I am meal prepping for her and myself and she is already down 22lbs. She feels great, we went on a short trip on Sat and she put in 15,000 steps. She is killing it! I will say, she still gets pain if she eats too fast, she forgets and is quickly reminded to SLOW DOWN! She is learning why it feels like to be full. We think it is crazy that she is able to eat so well now… we weigh everything and all of her meals are 4oz total and she does not drink anything 3.0 mins before or after meals. Low fat, no sugar and she is doing awesome. She is able to get down 60-80grams of protein and 4-5 bottles of water (with GENEPRO protein powder in 2 or 3) with no issues. God is good! Thanks all for the kind words.

You are saving yourself a lot of angst by not getting on the scale. You don't need it to follow your plan. The first week or so (it varies) is often the price of admission. You will get through it. Congratulations and good luck. Tek

    Cigna

Hi, I'm 4 weeks post op, had the sleeve at PennMed in NJ. I have Cigna and had a quick approval. The doctors office has to have all of the prerequisite properly documented. Also,a big help was a letter of medical necessity from my primary. The letter included my weight for 5 years and current health issues impacted by weight. Get familiar with your specific plan, call. CIGNA & ask questions. Follow up every 2 weeks until you get approved. Stay positive &Good luck.

  10. I had a large (unexpected) hiatal hernia repair with my bypass (dunno if the size of it mad a difference), and felt like I'd been hit by a bus during recovery. Took me a good two weeks to completely recover from it. Breathing in deep hurt. I'm glad it's fixed, but wow did I feel like a well-used punching bag for a while!

    Headaches after Bypass Surgery

Sorry you’re experiencing these headaches. Out of curiosity did you have to do the 2 week shake pre surgery diet? If you didn’t or only did it for a couple of days, you could be experiencing headaches because of withdrawal from caffeine, sugar, etc. Also hormones are released from your fat as you lose weight so you may be experiencing hormonal headaches. Just suggestions of other possible causes. Check with your medical team re tea. I was allowed green or herbal tea only. I was a green tea drinker so I really enjoyed the cup I had every day after surgery. 🙂. Hope the headaches abate soon but if they persist call your medical team.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

I feel for you both. That's different that your hospitals are not offering anything more than Tylenol. I did receive Tylenol and also had options to request narcotics for pain relief. The Tylenol was not cutting the pain for me, so I did opt for stronger pain medicine. My medical team also sent me home with 7 Oxycodon that have really helped me through the week. I'm on day 7 (post-op) and I feel 91% better! So HANG IN THERE! 😊 I'm looking forward to my first post-op appointment tomorrow. I can finally cough to clear my throat, blow my nose, and sleep for short periods on my side (I'm celebrating all of these little milestones!). 🤗 If you can- DO request stronger pain relief and DO use them safely as needed. Don't suffer. I have read a lot of members on here who share that they did not need them. I did. I never took more than one per 24 hours but it has aided in my comfort and recovery. My surgeon made to sure mention twice that they will not be refilled (for safety). That was totally acceptable/understandable. Gas is a beast and be sure to take some gas-relief chewables. My medical team also provided this for me while in the hospital and while here at home. It was interesting how purified water here in my home would create gas in my stomach versus juice or the water I drank while in the hospital. 🤔 You'll find certain liquids/juices do bloat and create painful gas. Be sure to ask about your gas-relief options because it makes such a big difference! Out of curiosity since there seems to be a lot of variances in the actual procedure- how did your surgeon close up your incisions? My surgeon (who is the Chief of Surgery at the hospital I went to) just used medical tape and not the surgical glue that I think a lot of others use. I was surprised by this. But I am healing up well so I guess it's all good...
  13. I don't match your demographics (I'm 5'3", 41, starting weight 280, no PCOS, and I can't imagine having a goal for my bra size LOL), but I can try to give you some general information from what I've seen on here. The amount of hair people lose varies a lot, but no lotion or potion or supplement you take is going to fix it. It will start and stop on it's own UNLESS you don't get your protein and multivitamin in on a daily basis, and then the hair loss will be worse. People will swear by biotin, but there is no evidence, and increasing your biotin can cause weird liver function test results. You are young, so you have that on your side as far as loose skin. But again, it varies a lot. Like hair loss, there is NOTHING other than plastic surgery you can do to fix loose skin. No lotions or potions or supplements will help, nor will exercises. Focus on getting healthy, wait a few years after surgery to decide if you NEED plastic surgery. One thing to do in the meantime: if you have rashes or infections from your lose skin as you lose weight, document this with pictures and have your doctor document this in your chart because there is a possibility that your skin surgery could be covered by insurance if there is a documented medical need. I'm 8 weeks out from surgery, and my stomach has gone down, but it is still larger than I'd like. However, this again will vary. I carry a lot of weight in my stomach; some people carry more weight in their thighs and butt or in their chest. I will say that for many of the people whose pictures I have seen, you can notice it in the face before anywhere else. Good luck on this journey!

    Psych Meds after Gastric Bypass

8 weeks out and I am mentally stable so far. Not sure I'm thrilled about having done the surgery, since it's now really unpleasant to eat and I'm hungry all the time. But the weight loss is very good - down 25lbs since surgery. I had sleeve, none of my meds are extended release, but I take a lot of meds because I have bipolar and anxiety. The only med I've changed is that I'm stopping the topamax which I took for migraines because I haven't had any migraines since surgery. I would highly recommend working with a psychopharmacologist if you take a lot of psych meds and are thinking about WLS. There's a lot to consider.
  16. Prilosec for 6 weeks, Ursodiol for 6 months, and 1 week of blood thinners. I also got a script for pain meds that I didn't use, OTC Gas-x, antibiotics, etc. I think that's all pretty standard, varying from surgeon to surgeon.
  17. Here are my thoughts, I had a great experience- hope you do too. Good luck! How did your tummy feel after the surgery? Were you able to *feel* your stomach, internally due to the surgery? Couldn't feel it at all. But, I didn't want to use my "ab" muscles to sit up, so I kind of slid off the couch/bed and stood from there. That was probably more due to the incisions. • Did you have to have a drain? Nope, no drain. • How long did you have to be on clear fluids after the surgery? If so, what clear fluids did you have? - 3 days maybe? It was fine, I didn't want to eat. Pho soup was my savior, I found chicken broth and bone broth gross. Get plain pho broth from your local Vietnamese place, eventually I added plain protein powder to it. • Did you prefer cold, room temperature, or warm fluids? I didn't want very cold or very warm liquids, but soup was warm, protein drinks cold, water cold. It was fine. • Sipping. Just don't take big gulps or chug anything. Approx 2 tablespoons at a time would work. You need to drink, hydration is extremely important. Sometimes I would end up with a big gulp in my mouth accidentally and would just sort of hold it in my mouth and swallow small sips. • Something I read said you won't be able to drink anything for the first 24 hours and that fluids will be through the IV, is that true? I was allowed to drink (tea, water, soup, vitamin water zero). • How did you sleep in the first week? If you are a side sleeper, when were you able to finally sleep on your side? Sleep on your back, my pregnancy/Ushaped pillow helped. I only took the prescription painkillers at night & they knocked me out. I tried to be careful about it, probably slept on back for a month.

    Going back to work

I am 7 weeks post-op and have lost around 45lbs from my highest weight. Recently, I saw some friends I hadn't seen since well before I started losing weight and who do not know I had WLS. They immediately noticed and commented on my weight loss, which made me terribly uncomfortable. They of course asked what I was doing and I simply stated I'm focusing on high quality protein and frequent, small meals because that's what my body seems to like best (all true). Then I quickly pivoted and asked how they were doing, blah blah blah. People LOVE to talk about themselves. Give them the chance, and they will run with it.

    6 Months and Stalled

So glad I have this forum...it has been so helpful that last 7 months. I am 7 months post op sleeve and have been at the same weight for exactly 6 weeks. I admit I have not been tracking my intake and have been "testing" lots of different foods now that I know I am fully healed which I am sure is the issue. I too have been losing hair for the past 2-3 months but this am i only had a half of hand of hair so there is some progress. It always nice to known I am not the only one going through this :) I also have not been walking due to the amount of light outside. This am I was finally able to walk again this am before work and I started tracking my food again so fingers crossed. I have consistently had an intake of 60-80gm of proteins a day and more than 80 oz of water daily.

    Pre-Op Today…

Sitting at hospital waiting on pre-op after having the same meeting earlier today with surgeon. Went over several pages of do’s and don’ts, the 1st week post op through week 3. So much structure and so many supplements and vitamins. Liquids for 3 weeks… A lot to “digest” (pardon the pun) at once. From the 19th till Jan 1 no chewable food. There goes Christmas along with Thanksgiving…🤣🤣
  21. Don't be embarrassed to ask for something stronger. You're the only one who knows your level of pain. I also found that pressing a pillow to my belly helped when I was trying to get up from the bed or a chair. I had a huge improvement between weeks 2 and 3, and now I don't have the incision pain any longer.

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

VSG October 5. I struggled to get my bearings the first couple of weeks but now that I am out of the purée stage and (more or less) hitting my protein goals, I feel great! I do need to up my water intake but I'm working on it. I broke the infamous "Week 3 Stall" a couple of days ago so now the scale is moving downward again. Acid reflux seems to be going away as well after a 7-day treatment of omeprazole last week. All in all, I'm loving my new stomach and wish I'd done this sooner. 😍
  24. Hi I'd been waiting for my OP for a couple of years had two pre ops and then covid hit so that was another year and a half wait and on the 28th of July got a phone call they was doing my OP 23rd August so everything was a rush to get bloods done an iron infusion to get to the hospital in the morning for 7.30 then the surgeon came up to tell me I might no have it done because he needed an assistant anyway 10 minutes later I had surgery the next day I thought what have I done to myself 10 weeks post OP and I feel brilliant not sure how much I've lost till the end of November but I will let you all know

    Constipated HELP!!

Ok I had this issue (I’m 2 weeks out today). How I solved it was Milk of Magnesia during the day and Miralax at night plus 2 stool softeners and you’ll start going. Plus all the water. It will start. Finally yesterday morning I went like pre-surgery and I think I turned the corner. I’m only doing 2 softeners now. Feel better it will work!
