April 2022 Surgery Buddies
LaylaAA212 replied to Crinkles's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
anyone have any suggestions for the liquid diet, I start mine in a week and I am nervous because I don't know what all to drink/have on this diet. Doctor's office wasn't very specific besides: liquids only. Any help or recommendations is appreciated! -
Hi everyone, I am 20 days from surgery (4/18) and I am nervous and excited. I feel prepared but at the same time I feel like I don't know what I am doing. My hospital hasn't been the easiest to work with as far as providing information on what to expect so I have been doing a lot of my own research. It almost feels like my doctors put everyone in the same camp and don't take each person as an individual which is highly annoying for a "Type A"/Planner like myself. I start a full pre-op liquid diet on 4/4 to help shrink my liver and jump-start weight loss before surgery. I am fully stocked up on Fairlife protein shakes (every flavor except coffee) and have unflavored protein powder and collagen to add to soups. What other options should I explore or do you have any recommendations for protein shakes to try? I am fairly nervous about my hair thinning or losing my hair - does anyone have experience with this or prevented this from happening? I started taking collagen about 3 months ago and noticed it has helped strengthen my nails and added hair growth but I am worried this won't be enough in the long run. Any advice is appreciated! Does anyone have any advice on pregnancy after DS? I am mainly going through this process to increase my chances of having children - my husband and I have suffered two miscarriages and I am being told by my OB/GYN that there's nothing they will do for me until I am at a better weight. I am fully committed as I want to start a family but waiting an additional 12-18 months after waiting this long seems like a lifetime. I want to be as prepared as possible for any hurdles or issues we may encounter - thanks in advance! That's a little about me - tell me about you! I am excited to be part of this community and build each other up! Thanks so much for reading, K. Becker - Minneapolis, MN

What do you guys think of this video?
Guest replied to DaisyAndSunshine's topic in Fitness & Exercise
Yup. Throw that food into MyFitnessPal. Keep calories not too low, not too high. Get your protein, and then get a lil' more. Walk 3-5x week. Work on your mind. That's it. The rest is icing on the cake. -
Major Meta Study: Mini Gastric Bypass as revision after Sleeve/Band is highly effective
Ninabnina77 replied to a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Wow, your so educated about bariatric procedures. I am so impressed. Thank you so much for taking the time to answer all my questions so thoroughly. I was under the impression the reason why the mini bypass was called mini when compared to the full bypass was because the mini had less intestinal bypass. So I guess was wrong and the by pass has more intestinal bypassing? When comparing the full to mini bypass, is the stomach made smaller in the full bypass? Would you say the full bypass has more restriction than the VSG? As I mentioned before, I have a life long problem with binge eating and I am always hungry. The VSG did minimal to help me in these two area, hence me looking into other surgical options. Right now my Dr. put me on contrave and it seems to be helping, but I don't want to be dependent on medication forever, I was hoping I could find a surgery that could provide me with a permanent fix. Btw, I am 5ft 7 inches tall, at my highest weight before the surgery I had gone up to 235 lbs. I had the VSG in June 2019. I managed to get down to 165 lbs, but took me teo years. Than I started gaining weight again I went up to 185 lbs. My dr has put me on contrave for the past 3 months and I have gone down to 170 lbs. I was neve able to reach my goal weight of 140 lbs. I live in fear of gaining all the weight back and having this vsg fully fail all the time. You look amazing, I wish I looked as good as you. it's going to vary pretty widely because it depends on so many factors besides starting BMI (although that's a big one, of course). Gender, age, metabolic rate, activity rate, what percentage of your body is muscle - those all play a role. that said, I lost 57 lbs before I had surgery (between my six-month supervised diet that was required by my insurance company, plus the two-week liquid diet required by the surgeon). At one year out, I was 129 lbs down from my surgery weight, and 186 lbs down from my all-time highest weight. I went on to lose another 50 or so lbs during year 2 (have gained 20 of it back since then, which is pretty common. A lot of us experience a 10-20 lb rebound gain after hitting our lowest weight). P.S. Just noticed this was posted in the gastric sleeve forum - I had bypass. Average loss tends to be a little more with bypass (although not by much), but it totally depends on the person. If you really stick to your program, you can be very successful with either.

A little over 5 months Post op. 207# overall and 145# from surgery Still a long way to go but it sure does feel good to be able to live. First picture was taking 1 week before surgery second was 3 weeks ago. -
First things first: AMAZING JOB ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS! You can and will keep it up! Next: Get out your tools. Grab MyFitnessPro and start scanning everything you out in your mouth. Drink your 64oz water or more every day. Start weighing daily on a Bluetooth scale and watch how water weight and activity impact your weight, then when you have a good day, you'll be able to see what you did and repeat the cycle. I can understand slowing and stalling at 8 months, especially if your activity has stopped, but you don't want to be overeating and gaining, it's obvious you know that. Don't let those bad feelings make you eat. It's your choice. Think of your kids when you get those feelings and find something protein packed to eat on! You got this!!!!

What are you eating during the pureed phase?!
ms.sss replied to carpeediem's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Ugh. The dreaded Pureed Stage. When i got to that stage, i puréed some beef, took one look at it and was all, No Thanks. Eww. So i just continued another week at Full Fluids then went to Minced right after. I did eat really, reaaaally runny eggs and creamy cottage cheese though. -
Ok all need advice..feel like failing.

I didn’t try (nor was i advised) to practice post-op behaviours pre-op. While is may be helpful to get into the habit, it’s probably difficult to do without the physical feedback-response one would get AFTER the surgery. In any case, this is what *i* did after surgery: I used a timer (on my watch) to time my bites. I’d take one, maybe 2 bites, put my utensil down and set my timer to go off in 2-3 mins. At the buzzer if i felt like taking another bite or two, i would, if not, i’d time another 2-3 mins. If I didn’t want another bite after that, i called it and put my food back in the fridge for later. Yes, it took me FOREVER to eat in the first few few months (or was it a year?) but I learned very early on that if i ate too fast or too much, i would be barfing in the toilet in no time. Not pretty. I also learned early on that i could not drink about 30-45 mins after eating solids, or yep, cue more barfing (but i had zero problems drinking right up to the moment i ate solids). But everyone is different and you may find that it wont affect you as much, or maybe it will affect you more. As someone mentioned above, listen to your body, and act accordingly. You’ll know when you know. Good Luck! ❤️ -
Eating carbs (pasta, rice, or bread )
oldandtired replied to New_me_2022's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
10 weeks post-op, and daily nausea, so I try to eat right, but it ultimately comes down to whatever will go down and stay down. I will get protein first, if I can, but the first month, my go to was mashed potatoes. The instant kind. I was afraid of, and still am, of anything with "sharp edges" Crackers. Salad. I don't know, it's weird. -
What was your "this is it" moment
oldandtired replied to jamaro2795's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine was different. I am older, so I have Medicare. My husband was a veteran, so I also have Tricare. I look through the sites occasionally, just because there are changes over the years to coverage, fees, etc. I have always struggled with my weight, but as I got older and less active, I gain a pound here and there. Well--over the last 3 to 4 years, I eventually went on BP meds. Imagine my surprise when I saw that a BMI of 35 and over, with a co-morbidity (as in diabetes, OR high blood pressure) could qualify you for them paying for the WLS! Took six months of jumping through various hoops, and here I am. (Everybody thought I was nuts, but other than the nausea, I have never looked back.) -
a 5-6 lb gain in two weeks is almost too much to be due to a decrease in exercise or increase in food - so I suspect at last some of that is either water or full intestines. If so, at least a couple of lbs of that should drop off within a couple of days. As for the rest - if you're no longer logging your food intake, I'd start with that to see what and how much you're taking in. I find that if I take in more than 1700 calories for more than a day or two, my weight starts heading up (and that number is going to be different for everyone depending on age, gender, activity level, etc...). I'm OK with calorie counting, but some people hate doing that. If you're one who doesn't like it, then I'd go back to eating like you were a few months after surgery (as in NOT all the way back to protein shakes and an obscenely low number of calories - but the whole spiel of eating protein first, then nonstarchy vegetables. And then, if you're still hungry, maybe a small serving of fruit or whole-grain carb). losing weight can be a huge struggle once you're a few years out, but people do it...

I’m 3 years out from my surgery. I’ve maintained my goal and been the same weight (within 5 pounds) for the last 2 years. my husband used to sleep eat. When he quit drinking, he stopped sleep eating too. I’m not saying this is the case with you.

Congrats! I just finished my zoom class with the others who are getting surgery from my surgeon within the next few weeks and it was very helpful. She said that those who take diabetes meds will never take them again once they leave the hospital so congrats on that also! I’m at 40 bmi with no co-morbidities per se but I want to get ahead of it. I have low energy, joint pain and get out of breathe easily. Not how I want to feel at 45 years old so I’m excited for this tool! -
There are days that I am actually HUNGRY and will eat more carbs than I usually would, but they are few and far between. So, I would say that it is ok. It is ok as long as it doesn’t become a daily trend. You have to listen to your body. My doctor has always stressed to stop eating when I am full. I think about this on the days when I am hungry: but, most days it’s not an issue. I am 3 years out and really good and picking my portion sizes.

Eating carbs (pasta, rice, or bread )
summerseeker replied to New_me_2022's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am unable to eat bread, rice, pasta and potatoes yet. I get too full on the protein. I live in the UK and high protein alternatives are not available unless we pay heavily for them on Amazon. My dietician allows snack size packets of bread sticks [ I manage half a pack] They come in 20gm packs at 81 cals. Because they are crunchy they dissolve and dont sit heavy. They are good for a snack with some soft cheese. Van der Meulen Melba toast comes in tiny packets of 6 slices. I eat 3 and these are 13 calories each, great with egg or tuna salad. At the moment if I want this crunch in my life I have to leave out the cucumber and tomato that I love too ...... I love eating so little -
What was your "this is it" moment
Arabesque replied to jamaro2795's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Woke up one morning & decided enough & rang my GP for an appointment & referral. Had my surgery about 6 weeks later. Had been bouncing between 60 & 75kg all my adult like. Then menopause & I was 91 almost overnight. Tried to lose it for 3 years but couldn’t lose a pound. A friend had the surgery about 12 months earlier & was very happy so … I didn’t have any health issues except from aching feet from the rapid gain & then just some burning feet after (no more heels for me) but I knew it was in my future. You will have to make permanent changes to your eating habits if you want to have permanent success. But that is the same whatever means you use to lose weight - diet, medication, exercise. They are just tools like the surgery. The horror stories aren’t that common really. People write about them because they are seeking support & advice because they are uncommon. But all surgery has risks as do medications. Consider other weight loss drugs that were approved & then taken off the market because of adverse side effects that were discovered over time. If you’re worried, have a long honest chat with your surgeon about risks & the stats behind them. If you are relatively healthy now you are in a better place to have the surgery now than later when you may be experiencing some health issues. All the best whichever path you choose. -
Eating carbs (pasta, rice, or bread )
Arabesque replied to New_me_2022's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Some people do some don’t. Some do low carb high protein alternatives. Some are careful with portion sizes & frequency. Many avoid them until maintenance. Some are allowed small portions while losing. My friend was allowed 1/2 slice of bread from about month 3 (but not allowed rolled oats which I never understood). I still don’t do bread, rice or pasta at almost 3 years. Really don’t do starchy vegetables either (except carrots in stews, soups, etc.) They sit heavily in my tummy & fill me quickly. I’ve tried small tastes a couple of times over the last 2+years & have accepted they are not my best option. Don’t miss them much even though I was a big consumer before my surgery. They would have been danger temptation foods for me if I could still eat them easily. I do eat complex carbs (2 serves a day) of rolled oats & multigrain crackers. I had the rolled oats from purée & added the crackers in maintenance. If I want pasta I use fresh zucchini pasta & sometimes steam finely sliced cabbage instead of noodles in asian meals. I’ve ordered wrap free wraps at cafes & eaten just the fillings of sandwiches. Check with your dietician. Consider alternatives (low carb or no carb vegetable options) for now or from maintenance. You know yourself best too. Whether you want to be able to include some carbs in your future. Whether you can tolerate them easily. Etc. -
Now thinking if canceling surgery 🥺
Esi replied to Happy Stylist's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was not able to drink quickly at all for months. Although I was not considered dehydrated, it took me all day to drink 4 cups of liquid for weeks. Now, I can drink one cup in a minute. If I am going to be in the heat, I make sure to hydrate well in the hours beforehand. Hope this helps! -
What are you eating during the pureed phase?!
LilaNicole20 replied to carpeediem's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I’m on my purée phase for 3 more weeks and I have to admit I’m still mostly drinking the shakes. I didn’t like the ricotta bake after the first day and I got sick of it. Don’t want to make it again. I’m eating applesauce and about 3 bites of baked chicken when I make it chewed really well. I did have Kroger’s kickin crab salad the other day, that was good. I’m afraid to wander too far off - and I’ve been in a stall that finally moved this morning. Baked salmon was really good. I’m liking Soups but the carbs and sodium are high so only like once every few days. Sweet and spicy tuna packet is another perfectly portioned grab. I have the Unjury premixed Protein, love it. My dietician said we don’t have to blend the meats, just chew really well and eat slow. -

Tomorrow starts my 1000 high protein diet. I ate some favs this weekend and probably overdid it, but only for dinner. Stayed on track otherwise. Meals are all organized from now until I get home and through first couple of weeks. Sleeve surgery is April 6 th. Anyone else getting organized? Helps me mentally prepare too! Eating carbs (pasta, rice, or bread )
BigSue replied to New_me_2022's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm 18 months out and I still rarely eat refined carbs. I mainly eat vegetables, lean protein (poultry, fish, pork, egg whites), and legumes. I don't eat a lot of processed low-carb substitute foods because they tend to be overpriced and often high in fat and calories, but I do have a few go-to substitutions: Cauliflower rice - I eat this several times per week and don't miss real rice at all. I buy the frozen stuff, so it's even faster and easier to prepare than real rice. Mr. Tortilla 1-net-carb tortillas (these are small and great for tacos). La Banderita carb counter tortillas (larger and great for wraps, and I cannot tell the difference from real flour tortillas). Mashed cauliflower - good substitute for mashed potatoes (with a lot of garlic and herbs, and low fat gravy). -

I had RNY on 3/21 and I’m 6 days post-op. Abdomen still kinda sore, still having some gas pressure in the chest, but overall good! Just kind of irritated by the frequent clusters of hiccups I get occasionally because that contracts my entire abdomen and it hurts. Is that normal?? -
Hello fellow DSers I have recently gained a few lbs and I’m freaking out. About 10 since fall with about 5-6 in the past 2 weeks (due to a bed rest situation/no exercise situation from a non related medical procedure I think). I am normally very active. I also do intermittent fasting. I work out about 2 hours a day 7 days a week with few exceptions. But to be honest I’m a terrible eater. I’m a sugar and carb addict and live my life a slave to my upset stomach (ds related) Again to be honest that has worked for me 2 years out I’ve lost 100% of my excess weight but it’s not working anymore. I went from 283 to 138 and am now about 148. How have you all handled these weight gains if you have had them? I’m afraid of the slippery slope. Should I go back to basics? Proteins and veggies? This is such a weird statement but I feel like the sugar is what has helped me get here bc I don’t keep the calories in (ya know) and I’m afraid to give it up. Any advise appreciated. TIA

3 years out and still afraid of gaining the weight back
toodlerue replied to RachaelLou's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Sounds a lot like me. I lost 60 after the surgery. Never got down to my goal, just 10 pounds away. They I started to eat crap, I quickly put on 30. Last February my friend talked me into doing the Fast Metabolism Diet by Haily Pomroy, your gonna have to Google it. You eat really clean it’s just what you eat in 3 different phases. We followed it for a couple months & then just continued to eat clean. In August I hit my goal weight!! I have been hanging out 130-135 since then. Still try to eat clean. We are going on a cruise in September & I am super nervous about that!
