You dont have to "get approval" in Australia, if your surgeon will do it your health insurance will pay. Obviously you couldnt get a lap band at a BMI of 20, but generally 30+ is grounds enough, if you've dieted, if you're just getting heavier by the year, you dont have to prove co-morbidities to the insurance co. Its basically whether or not your surgeon will do it and you can probably surgeon shop anyway till you find someone you like, who is on your wavelength since Medicare will pick up a good deal of the cost of the consultation. It was a quick process for me, less than 3 months, and I was another who payed upfront so that I'm bulkbilled for everything - all fills and consultations - forever after - which basically means that Medicare is charged direct by the surgeon and he charges on the scheduled fee for those visits. Our health system is really great, as is our education system. You can also be done under the public health system if you dont have private health insurance but that differs enormously - with the group of surgeons I went with it wasnt an option since a lot of surgeons want you to have insurance in case of revision surgery, they strongly advise that you do NOT take out insurance, have the surgery and then drop it, and in many areas you could wait five years or more for a spot on a public list, then again, there's areas in Melbourne and I know in Perth also where you can be done within months. Just depends.

*sigh* I got a call from Dr. Kim's office. My insurance has an exclusion for weight loss surgery, and anyway, Dr. Kim doesn't do straight removals - he only does removals and revisions to other procedures. So, my options now are to go back to the doctor who did my band (which, based on things I've learned since I had my band, I'm not sure I want to do), go to the ER, or wait until we move and see if whatever insurance my husband gets at his new job covers anything like this. None of these are particularly appealing options. I wonder if my insurance will cover removal if it's medically necessary? I'm going to look for a surgeon in the area who will do a straight removal, and try to get in to see him, and go from there. I want to be done with this.

Experiencing Bad Acid Reflux after Vertical Sleeve Surgery
KellyL replied to Fritz's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Some people have acid reflux post-op with a sleeve, but it's usually immediately post op and is worse until the swelling goes down at about the 4-6 wk mark. A lot of people are on PPI's to help with the problem and some people stay on the meds for longer term. It depends on the Surgeon and their recommendations. I'm sorry to hear that you are having problems with your sleve. The kink in your sleeve may be the same as a stricture? I would defintely research my options before revising to a RNY. Maybe you could get a second opinion? Good luck and I wish you well on your weight loss journey. -

Medicare Will Not Pay/support The Sleeve
shangefan replied to sdb1147's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
As a person revising from lap band to the sleeve, I wouldn't necessarily recommend the lap band. It seems as though some people have great success (and I did for 18 months) but it is slow and the long-term failure rate is pretty high. That said, I am certain you will consider all of the factors and make the right decision for you, even if it is lapband. -
Hey good day all old & new. I havent been in the forum for some time... I had my sleeve done back in 2014 as of now i have gain majority of my weight back. Im looking to get a revision.. question was it hard to get insurance to approve for a revision to a bypass? I suffer from acid reflux in the middle of the night it will shoot up through my nose uncontrollably. Not often but i just dont enjoy it when it does.. Also did it help with loosing weight and keeping it off Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

One thing that you may want to ask your surgeon about is if they will numb your stomach before surgery. This was not done before my sleeve but was before revision to bypass. Huge difference in pain level.

May be losing my band....kinked tube maybe?
Bright replied to Bright's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
hi folks...me again....many years later! I had my five year band-a-versary last week and despite some problems, I'm still really happy with my decision! just wanted to update this post on my port/tubing issue...at long last there is now someone offering fills/band care in Dublin and I met with her yesterday to see what she could tell me about my port.... I haven't done anything about it since my last port - life is pretty busy and I tried to "get over it"! Still down 70+ lbs - but have gained and lost 20lbs over the past two years....I am still pretty unhappy with how much I weigh but am still delighted with my loss overall... ANYWAY...the lovely band nurse tried to give me a fill and basically is sure that my port/tubing are disconnected. She has suggested i fly to the UK for a quick revision surgery to repair the port - after having an x-ray to confirm her suspicions - should only be there 24 hours all going well... next available surgery date is 2 december, and I am torn between getting it over with, and scared/worried about the op...typical me! I am a final year psych student and have a lot of work to have finished by february and exams in Jan..(excuses, excuses!) but I guess i should just bite the bullet! for anyone researching...the surgery will apparently cost around £1200 (sterling)= $1900 = €1450 - I am self pay so I guess general anaesthetic will be my christmas present! I have the 11cc band, with a fill capacity of 9cc - and according to the fill nurse, i probably have no Fluid in my band - I still have subtle restriction and am actually feeling quite nervous about having tight restriction for the first time -five years after banding.....is that a record??? oh and love and hugs to any of the "oldies" here who may remember me - this "place" sure has changed...it's massive! any comments/advice welcome Bright xxxx -
The very first thing I would do is call your insurance company to see if what that insurance coordinator says is correct- that sounds a bit odd to be to require that length of time for a high BMI. Second, I don't know of a single insurance company that will allow you (the insured) to submit for pre-approval of any surgery. Someone who works "in the biz" can surely correct me, but I had thought about that myself when i had some issues with inept ins. coordinators and was told I couldn't do it- only the Dr.'s office could submit it. Third, if you find out from your ins. company that your husband IS within the guidelines, ask them if their policy bulletin is posted online and then I would PROMPTLY fax or email that to the ins. coordinator at your Dr.'s office and explain to her that she was MISINFORMED on your insurance guidelines. You have to be your own advocate - or in this case since you are helping your DH, then you must help him be his own advocate and not let others determine your future or his. I had to switch surgeon's just 2 wks before being scheduled for surgery w/the first surgeon- already had the pre-approval without doing the supervised diet because I met my ins. policies requirements for having a Revision under the clause of complications. When I switched surgeons, the IDIOT insurance coordinator kept telling me that even though I already had a pre-approval I would still have to do the 6 mth supervised diet. She literally argued with me and I told her she was wrong. She finally caved and made the request to switch the approvals over but told me they would still deny me on those grounds. HA!!!! She was wrong and she had to eat her words. She wouldn't return my calls after all that was said and done. I didn't care, she kept saying, "I've been doing this for 10 years, I think I know how to do my job.". Yeah... whuuuutttt evvvvvaaaaa.... So, at the end of the day, don't take the final word from ANYONE unless it's from the result of you making the contact with the final decision makers whether it be your ins. company, etc.

Regrets???
chrissymcm08 replied to Vegan_Bariatric's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had the sleeve last April, was doing okay until I stopped taking the omeprazile and just used tumms (huge mistake). I have bad acid reflux now and maybe stones having an ultasound and swallow test on Wednesday. Two people that I know had the sleeve and then went in for a revision because of the acid reflux. So now am thinking should have had the bypass. Am taking pantroprazil (not sure about spelling) and it has helped but still have had some bad spells with bell peppers and greasy ground beef. So I don't know but I was 365 and am down to 267. You do not have that much to lose so if you do the sleeve do not stop using omeprazile under any circumstances. He's good. I had a revision but had the band removed first then had the sleeve 3 weeks later. My stomach always feel like I ate something that didn't agree with me...hate it! I was at the post op today. Got the drain removed. Boy, did that sh** hurt! There was 12 inches of tubing inside me. There was no compassion for any pain but at least I got it removed.

My slipped band need advice from slipped people
GayleTX replied to Janine's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Oh, janine...hugs to you, sweetie. I am so very sorry this has happened to you! That must have been a frightening experience! I found out just yesterday that my band is slipped but we don't know why....right know I'm on liquids for 14 days and then we'll see what happens but it will probably mean a revision. I'm 2 yrs out, have been exteremely compliant, have lost 160 lbs (with 40 to go). I am scared.......scared of life without my badn. I have ridded my body of diabetes, high blood pressure, gout, arrythmia, etc. I can walk again and have a life again. Can I do it without my band? I hope I can but I don't want to. I do hope you do well and that your doctors and insurance company will take good care of you. -
I've had a lot of surgeries. Initial lapband surgery, a torsoplasty, breast augmentation, 2 port revisions and now, finally, a band replacement. So pain and feeling horrible is something I can put up with, because I know it's for a greater good. But this nausea might have me beat. It's day 3 of it with last night being the worst. I spent a lot of the night dry retching and feeling like absolute crud. I alternated between goosebumps and convulsing and then shivering and burping then dry retching all over again. When I did sleep I had nightmares. I've lost 7lbs in the last week but I feel so awful that for the first time, I am regretting what I've given up for the weight loss. My 7yo son is visiting and is going home back to his dad tonight and all I can think of is how all he saw this week is his mum in pain or so sick she can't spend any time with him. My partner is being awesome. He keeps reminding me that this is not just for today but what I needed to do for my quality of life in the future, but I guess right now, I can't see it. I can't see past how horrible I feel. I've spoken to hospital and they've suggested medication to ease the nausea so I'm going to try that and hope I can salvage the rest of the day with my boy. I'm hoping that at least that regret, I will be able to work on.

Questions! Questions! Questions!
Tiffykins replied to geniseg_2000's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'll pipe in and hopefully Bernadette will too for her experience with the band as well. I had a band for 8 short months before I revised to VSG. Those 8 months were pretty craptastic. I was miserable from 2.5 months post-op. I had the normal lapband issues, food getting stuck, not being able to eat certain foods EVER, puking on Water, let's not mention all the time I spent in restaurant bathrooms because eating out always led to a "surprise" attack of the productive burping regardless of how well I chewed, and how slow i ate. Then, the pain was nearly unbearable from the flipped port that was causing the tubing to pull on the actual band that was sutured around my stomach. Life with the sleeve is pretty fabulous. I got to goal in less than 7 months. I've dropped 130 pounds in 9 months with the sleeve. It's been pretty amazing. The post-op diet is a bit more strict with the sleeve, but it's so worth it to let the staple line heal properly. I can't tell you how horrible the band is compared to the sleeve. My mom has a band, and had it placed in Nov 2007. She pukes 2-4 times a week, can't eat some days, she can't get a fill and has been stalled out for over a year with 75lbs lost. She just deals with it because she thinks it's "okay". Technically, the band has the lowest and slowest weight loss stats. 1 in 4 band patients need a second surgery within 5 years to either revise, fix a flipped port, change port position, replace port, repair a slipped band or put in another band. The complications are on the rise with the band while the complications with the sleeve are minimal compared to the long term issues of the band. If you have any specific questions, feel free to contact me. -
I have my revision in the morning. I been drink the treatment and I only have 2/3 down. Havent pooped much or even had urge. The juice is making me gag and fight the urge to vomit. Feels like constipation. What should I do? Only have about an hour before I stop drinking anything. Sent from my LGMP260 using BariatricPal mobile app

Pre Op help
nocturnalgemi replied to Seattle WLS Newbie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not sure if this was meant for me or someone else but the way my surgeon explained it is that yes, he could fix my hiatal hernia with the sleeve but most sleeve patients experience a recurring hernia within a few years. The way RNY anchors your pouch apparently prevents it from slipping back through your diaphragm. Plus, often times GERD issues come back too. There are many people on here who are getting revised from sleeve to RNY, mostly because their GERD wasn't resolved or it came back. Sent from my SM-G920T using BariatricPal mobile app -
Well, I hadn't been on here in sometime. I had band to sleeve revision 9 Feb 2015 and, didn't lose much. However, I decided to have plastics anyway. And, I must say, I have never been happier. I had surgery 3 Dec 2015. It was completely pain free. It was uncomfortable but without pain. So, I tell people that everyone is truly different. I also had really good drugs, too. Though I an still quite swollen, I'm so impressed with the outcome. I will update next week. Wishing you ask well. I couldn't figure out how to rotate pictures.

I will be undergoing sleeve revision to roux en y. One because of reflux but more importantly for weight loss. I lost 90 lbs. 7 years ago with sleeve and gained back 65. How much should I expect to lose? I have a new surgeon who I like much better and he is more concerned with my health and I can already see their follow ups will be much better. I am not screwing this one up. SW 250 Lowest 159 CW 225 GW 185

Hi! I’m hoping someone has some insight for me. I’m a year out and in August I had some sort of “attack” i felt pressure in my chest and back my throat I started sweating and really felt like I was going to pass out. I was sitting on the beach not exerting myself however I had overdone it the night before drinking and eating. The next time it woke me up and again the night before I had eaten red meat (not usual) and had wine (somewhat usual). After that I went to the dr had an ekg and a stress test all great. I exercise (run). The past week I’ve had 2 more “attacks”. Today I was on he phone and I couldn’t talk from all the pressure in my chest. I know GERD is a thing for sleeve patients but google searches don’t match up with what is happening. My dr said it’s indigestion and to take Prilosec which i will do but it seems it comes from nowhere and so fast! I see my surgeon for my yearly next week but I wanted to see if anyone has had any experiences similar?? Thanks! Band to sleeve revision surgery 1/16/17 HW: 283 CW: 177 GW: 160

Hello there and welcome. I am a band to sleeve revision. I have to tell you, if I had known about the sleeve first, I would have never had the band. It isn't nearly as drastic as some weight loss surgeries. Basically, all they are doing is reducing the size of your tummy. It functions the same as anyone else's, it is just smaller. And, they remove the portion that makes ghrelin, so you don't feel hungry all the time anymore either. The best thing is, no fills, no unfills, etc. You get the sleeve and you immediately have restriction. That is it, you are done. I remember when I got my band one of the biggest attractions was that is was reversible. But now, I realize that isn't so important, because I don't ever imagine waking up some morning and thinking, "gee, I wish I were fat again." As for Dr. Huacuz, I personally don't have any experience with him, so I am unable to comment.

I am scheduled for the gastric sleeve in January. I am having second thoughts and debating on changing surgery to the gastric bypass. Has anyone had the sleeve and wished they would have went ahead with the bypass? Or had a revision? Or anything like that and why. Thanks!

Jules, I will be sleeved by the time you get to Mx. I am getting a revision (this band just is not for me!) Keep in touch. Happy you made the decision. I got 'most" of my fat suit off with the band but I am slowing gaining weight....30 lbs from my goal weight. (was 25lbs away last month!-20lbs the month before-Yikes :scared0:I keep getting food stuck so I eat crappy...) Let your journey begin:party4: D.
