from lap band to sleeve
LilMissDiva Irene replied to lara's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi lara, welcome to the site!! I am a revision from band to sleeve. Best thing I've ever done for myself!! I had trouble with the whole insurance thing, and since I had gained back all of the weight I'd lost post band I didn't want to waste anymore time fighting it. I did self pay with Dr. Aceves on Sept. 15th. Again, BEST THING EVER! I didn't have much issue - my recovery wasn't that bad. I think I struggled more with fatigue than anything else. I think I still deal with that to an extent, but it's nothing as bad as it was for the first month. However, the results of the sleeve are pretty darn amazing. It has been for me everything that the band was promised, but never was. Good luck with your revision! Let us know how you're doing. -
Woo hoo!!! Congratulations!!!! I'm glad this revision has been so successful for you!!!! You are doing so well. Sounds like you'll be at goal before you know it!

I need all of your thoughts on this...

If there's ANY way you can make yourself wait, I'd see if insurance will cover it. Why? 1. Follow-up care. American doctors often do not want to take patients from Mexico for whatever reason. If they DO take you, they charge you through the nose. 2. Emergency follow-up care. If you do have issues, you have to fly to Mexico. If it's a case of not being able to swallow... can you stand the time in a plane? Folks have found nice people in ER's that will call Mexico & allow themselves to be talked through an un-fill. It just all sounds scary & iffy to me. 3. Paying for follow-up long term. If the surgery wasn't covered, any follow-up most likely won't be covered. Issues probably will be pre-existing or not covered. So you're not just looking at 10k now, but 10k per revision & 100 per fill, etc. Yeah, I painted a worse case scenario. I'm self-pay as well & terrified that we may someday need a 2nd surgery. We've started saving for that "just in case". But if it does happen, I already know my surgeon... and my hospital. They're just down the road. :welldone2: We're self-employed & that's unlikely to change. If I'd had any possibility of having better insurance soon, I'd have waited (screaming, groaning & complaining... but waiting). Sorry to be a downer & remember it's just my opinion. :scared: Go with your gut!! -

Karenytrevision replied to ready_forchange's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery is scheduled for June 1st and my liver shrinking diet starts this Thursday for two weeks until surgery. My surgery is in two stages with the first surgery being revision from rn.y and fixing hiatal hernia and second surgery on August 1st being the sleeve. Has anyone ever heard of two stages like this? I am going from gastric bypass revising to sleeve -

Wow, good luck on your surgery. Why are you havi g a revision keep us updated on your progress Sent from my LGLS775 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Hi There, A revision is when there is a problem with the saline not tightening the band when injected. It can happen but is not real common. In my case I had to have the port replaced, the port is the part where the saline is injected. Hope this answers your questions. Thanks, Cheryl
-
What is a revision? getting the paid replaced or something? Why did you have to get a revision? Hope everything works out.
-
Why not go back to the surgeon and get a fill? Every surgery will be hard work. If after rebooting you aren't doing well, then consider a revision. Don't be embarrassed. They have seen it all

Congrats on your 1 year bandiversary! I had a revision, but did not need a replacement. Best wishes, ad hopefully you will get good results. Karen -
I went for my 3rd consults yesterday and I love the doctor. I still have one more consult to go to but out of all 3, I love her the most. She said I need 3 things done, arm lift, inner thigh lift (not the long scar but the scar around my panty) and exxtended tummy tuck. She said she can do all 3 procedures in 4 hours. The total cost will be $19,000. Her fees is about $12,000 and the rest is the surgical room and Anesthesia fees..this is an outpatient and not include hospital stay. She give me a one year for revision if something goes wrong within a year, i don't have to pay anything except if it is major and has to be done in a hospital operating room which I have to pay for the fees. Is this sounds reasonable? BTW, I live in TN. Thank you,

New Friend/A little bit about my story
Jaffa replied to ednalewis's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I'm just wondering? 30 years ago? I wonder if maybe they had their stomach stapled? I think that was common 30 years ago? This may explain, the person wondering if they can be revised? I know one person who had a stomach stapling about 30 years ago, and of course it streched back out, they didn't realize back then, that it wouldn't work long term because of stretching. If this is the case, they maybe could be converted to sleeve? Or maybe converted to DS? -

Surgery is scheduled for June 2. In one week I will be having my revision surgery. Hopefully all in one surgery they will remove my Adjustable Gastric Band (AGB) and do the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG). AGB to VSG in TJ MX.

I'm 29 and am revising from the band to sleeve. When I got the band I told my husband, parents and sister. Other than my husband all thought I was crazy and "not that fat", but my whole family is overweight and has health problems. I'm revising due to band complications and only told my husband. However we are extremely private people and really don't like others all up in our business it's always been this way. I may tell my parents after its all over and when all is well or I may not. They know I am private but am also a ball of fire if they give me grief about it or told anyone without my permission. This is no different to me than not telling everyone I got a new car, job, house, purse or that I'm going on vacation. This is just who I am. I have lost lots of weight off and on thru the years so I'm sure no one will be suspicious when I pop up thin. Especially since I don't see extended family often. IMO this is your body and life and if you don't want to tell people that's your right.

Surgery Scheduled 10/8/14 - Support Pals Wanted

Hi! Congratulations on your date! I was a revision from band to bypass on May 21, 2014 and have lost 55 pounds. I think you will have no problem losing the 100. Feel free to pm me anytime -
They want people to jump through the hoops.. I know someone that had a similar problem (she’s in the process of getting revision to the sleeve) her doctor had to write a letter of necessity and submit documentation from the time she got it until today. There are a lot of people coming back from lap band having similar issues as yours...acid reflux and tolerance to certain foods. I hope you get a resolution... acid reflux is not fun! band revision to GB
James Marusek replied to Pm121's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
One of the individuals in our Bariatric Surgery Support Group meeting went from a lap band to RNY gastric bypass revision. His band started to wear into his stomach and it became a life-threatening situation for him. He was pleased with his revision. Lost a lot of weight. I think they made his pouch a little smaller than most because of the scaring from the band removal. As a result he was not able to eat as much as most RNY patients. But that did not bother him. He lost a lot more weight with RNY than with the band. -
How far out are you? I'm still pre revision. But right after I got my lap band I felt that way. So many of our social interactions ate designed around food!

Help deciding btw LB and gastric sleeve
marfar7 replied to SusanSM's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm also a band to sleeve revision (almost a yr now). Had my band for 3 1/2 yrs and lost almost all of my weight (went from 250 to 144. Then it slipped. After vomiting almost everyday. After my unfill, I gained about 35 lbs back. Had to have a tool so I chose the sleeve (I figured the RNY was a bit drastic to lose 40 lbs) when my band had to be removed (eventually herniated when I continued vomiting even with a total unfill) While the weightloss is really slow (I'm still 15 lbs from goal), I know if I actually tried, I could lose it. It's nice to not even try and still maintain. I've vomited 2x in the last yr - vs almost everyday. Vomiting now is a long drawn out process that yields little results, so if I take 1 bite too many, I'm miserable till it passes. Luv my sleeve. Even if all it does is allow me to maintain...I vote for the sleeve. My dr told me once ur band slips, u have a higher chance of slippage with a new band... -
It sounds like you have a slip, caused by your stomach virus. I just had the same problem. I had to have a revision in the hospital. But, when i called my surgeon, he saw me that day, and made an emergency apt t at the hospital to fix my problem. You need to be forceful at the surgeon's office, you need to be seen under floroscope. Don't wait, it is important!!! Good luck, Karen

Changing From Rny To Sleeve--Grateful For 6 Month Requirement

Sleeve or bypass? Please give me advice!
teaqueen replied to Nicki24's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sleeve is a great 1st procedure. You still have other secondary surgical options including doing a RNY after if you don't get the results you are going for. Bypass does not leave any other doors open. There is no revision or 2nd procedure options there. My sister did bypass 10 years ago and managed to stretch out her pouch (there is a ring or stoma that creates the pouch connection to the new intestine location.) Once you stretch the stoma ring...it won't unstretch. With sleeve, you have a pressurized staple line the length of your stomach. It won't stretch out. The fundus (stretchy part of your stomach) is all or mostly removed during your surgery, so your restriction with a sleeve is permanent. I went with sleeve because I didn't like the idea of rerouting my intestines and have seen that with deliberate bad eating, you can stretch the stoma with bypass. Just a couple more points to think about as you make your decision. Good luck!! Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App
